Some Demographic Aspects of Women’s Access to Land for Farming in South Africa: A comparison from 2004 to 2007.

Nyirasafari, Philomene. January 2010 (has links)

The issue of women&rsquo / s access to land is a developmental issue. From a fundamental research view point, this study aims to explore the circumstances in which women access land in South Africa. The study examines the inequalities that may arise in the context of land access, land acquisition / land use, activities taking place on land and closely related issues focusing specifically on women in general, and women headed households in particular. The study is based on demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, occupational groups, education, province of residence and ethnic groups. Bringing together the demographic variables and land related variables, the study captures the structural changes between 2004 and 2007. Using 2004 and 2007 GHS secondary data requested from Statistics South Africa, cross tabulation and bivariate statistical analysis by means of SPSS software was performed. The results obtained indicate that the inequality against women&rsquo / s access to land still persists. Some women have access to land for agricultural purpose but few own it. The findings suggest that a number of factors including age, place of residence, marital status, ethnic group, literacy, educational level, of women are associated with the ability of women to access and acquire land. The sustainable livelihood framework is a theory that guided this study. Diversification is commonly used to prevent time of risks and shocks. In general, the study shows that the proportion of women who had access to land was 16% in 2004. This figure dropped to 14% in 2007.

In Brazil, several sources point to the lack of qualified workforce as a cause of slower economic growth. This dissertation explores the theoretical linkages made from income inequality to economic performance. The empirical section focuses on one of the theories presented, the one on creditmarket imperfections. According to this theory, imperfect credit markets are poor resource allocators and do not allow for low income individuals to invest in their own human capital. In Brazil, there is a lack of empirical studies aimed at testing the channels through which inequality affects growth, therefore this research gains significance. The results presented here were drawn from family household survey – POF – undertaken by the IBGE. Data has evidenced that education investments grow as a percentage of the total budget with raises of income. Raises in income for very high income classes do not increase education spending. The data suggests the existence of a budget constraint for low and middle class Brazilians from all regions. It has been found strong evidence that low and middle income classes in Brazil have limited access to credit-markets. Therefore, there is evidence that redistribution would increase aggregate spending on education.

Estimativas, ajustes e técnicas estatísticas em inquéritos de saúde / Estimates, adjustments and statistical techniques in health surveys

Neuber José Segri 27 February 2013 (has links)
Nowadays population-based health surveys employ different strategies in order to obtain data, such as household and telephone interviews with the purpose of monitoring risk factors and evaluate the access and utilization of health services, being essential in planning public health policies. Objective. Study the implementation of some statistical tools used for comparison of estimates obtained by different surveys, creation of post-stratification adjustments and small-area estimation techniques, using data from different population-based health surveys conducted in areas of the state of São Paulo. Methodology. Using the svy commands of Stata (10.0 and 11.0), three studies were carried out. The first (paper 1) compared estimates according to the type of the survey (household survey ISACapital 2008 and telephone survey VIGITEL-SP 2008) using Poisson regression analysis adjusted by age and education. The second (paper 2) compared post-stratification adjustments utilizing different sets of variables and three different strategies (cell weighting technique, rake technique and a third \"combined\" between the rake and cell weighting). The third (paper 3) used five (direct and indirect) small-area estimation techniques for the calculation of prevalence of health characteristics for a smaller area of São Paulo (Butantã Health District). Results. There were no statistically significant differences between the estimates obtained by VIGITEL and ISACapital for the prevalence of mammography in the year prior to the interview. However, estimates for the global results of the Pap smear at least once in life and in the past year as well as, mammography in life, we observed differences, with higher prevalence rates among respondents by telephone (paper 1). Applying the rake post-stratification technique, the largest reductions were observed in bias, especially when taking into account sociodemographic variables associated with each health characteristic analyzed (paper 2). The estimates for small areas obtained by calibration and regression, considering the factors associated with each health characteristic, were the ones most similar to the prevalence considered to be the true population values (paper 3). Conclusions. The results of the comparisons between the two surveys indicate the trend of overestimation in some indicators of prevalence of mammography and Pap smear via telephone survey, indicating a concern for further studies that also contribute to a better understanding of the bias and possible corrections with new post-stratification adjustments (paper 1). Despite the post-stratification adjustments do not completely correct the estimates, it should not be considered an impediment, since the telephone surveys contribute to the direct actions and new health policies in Brazil. (paper 2). The use of smallarea estimation techniques allows extrapolating the utilization of a research that had not been designed for such a purpose, identifying the needs of a particular region, contributing to the implementation of preventive interventions in public health at the local level. Malaria prevention and control in Ethiopia

Dejene Haila Kassa 11 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the implementation of the roll back malaria (RBM) programme at household and at health post levels and examined factors that negatively impact on malaria prevention and control activities. Quantitative, descriptive, analytic crosssectional research, guided by the conceptual framework of the Health Belief Model, was conducted. Structured interviews were conducted with 857 women (for the household survey in phase 1) and 53 health extension workers (HEWs) in phase 2 of the study, in nine malaria endemic districts of Sidama Zone, southern Ethiopia. Data were analysed using SPSS version 20. The study’s findings indicate that 53.3% (n=457) of the household respondents and 24.5% (n=13) of the HEWs had low levels of overall malaria-related knowledge. Household respondents aged 25-34 years, (p<0.01); regularly received malaria-related information, (p<0.001) and the less poor women (p<0.001) had good levels of knowledge. Of the households, 38.9% (n=333) reported poor RBM practices. Wealth, knowledge, perceived threat of malaria and perceived benefits of implementing malaria preventive measures were positively associated with good RBM practices. Indoor residual spraying (63.6%; 422 out of 664), consistent use of insecticide treated bed nets (51.6%; 368 out of 713), and environmental sanitation (38.6%; 331 out of 857) were the most commonly implemented malaria prevention strategies in the study area. Out of the 252 reported malaria cases, 53.6% (n=135) occurred among children under five years of age who also comprised 50.0% (n=16) of 32 reported malaria-related deaths. The RBM practices were poorly implemented in the study area despite malaria prevention and control efforts. Slow progress in behavioural changes among household members, lack of transportation services for referring malaria patients, lack of support given to HEWs and lack of feedback and supervision from higher level health care facilities were identified as potential challenges facing RBM implementation in the study area. Future efforts need to focus on effective behavioural changes based on intervention studies and regular monitoring of the RBM programme. The workloads of the HEWs should also be reconsidered and lay health educators should be used more effectively. Health posts should always have sufficient anti-malaria drugs and other resource such as rapid diagnostic kits. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)

Chudoba českých seniorů / Poverty of Czech seniors

Hromádková, Václava January 2018 (has links)
Poverty of Czech seniors Abstract Poverty is a relevant topic even in developed countries, which it needs to be deal with. In the following diploma thesis I will introduce some definitions and concepts of poverty and material deprivation. I will also deal with process of demographic ageing and a development of senior's population in the Czech Republic. The intention of the analytical part of this diploma thesis is to capture a level of poverty and material deprivation of Czech seniors in year 2014, using at-risk- of-poverty rate and material deprivation rate. I will focus on the following question: "Which group of seniors based on gender, marital status, age and education is threatened the most by poverty or material deprivation". I will describe the level of poverty and material deprivation in different regions of the Czech Republic. I also will compare differences between seniors and the whole population in the sense of the level of poverty and material deprivation. This thesis uses data from the Czech Statistical Office, particularly the data from the Population Cenzus in years 2001 and 2011 and also the data from the household survey called Living condition in year 2014. Selected data are used in binary logistic regression for describing the determinants of poverty and material deprivation of seniors in...

Sistema de vigilância de fatores de risco relacionados à prática de atividade física e sedentarismo para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis: adaptação, avaliação e aplicação em área de atuação do PSF no município de São Paulo / Surveillance system for risk factors related to physical activity and inactivity for non-communicable diseases: adaptation, evaluation and application on the area attended by a Public Health Center

Taquecita, Leila Yuki 11 November 2010 (has links)
To adapt and test a surveillance system of risk factors related to physical activity and inactivity to chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in an area of operation of the Family Health Program (FHP) in the municipality of São Paulo. Material and methods. We conducted a household survey in 1,805 adults living in households enrolled in the PSF area covered by the basic health unit (BHU) Jardim Jaraguá in São Paulo. The questionnaire used was adapted from the instrument employed in the interviews of VIGITEL system. The indicators of this system on physical activity and inactivity were analyzed according to gender, age and education of individuals. The reproducibility of the indicators was assessed by comparing the results obtained in the original interview and in another interview repeated after a period of 7 to 15 days in a subsample of 101 individuals (by calculating kappa coefficients). Results: Physical activity during leisure, transportation and occupation were more frequent in men as physical activity in housework was more frequent in women. The condition of complete physical inactivity was more common in men. Positive association between education and physical activity was found in males for activity at leisure and in females for physical inactivity. Inverse association between education and physical inactivity was observed among males. There was an inverse association between education and physical activity at home among females. The proposed system met a potentially simple, rapid, low cost and good reliability, with good reproducibility of the indicators studied since they had values of kappa coefficient with moderate to substantial agreement. Conclusions. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of surveillance practices related to the FHP. Still, the data generated by the study showed high level of inadequate physical activity in this population highlights the need for surveillance practices aimed at specific population groups

Inquéritos por telefone: inferências válidas em regiões com baixa taxa de cobertura de linhas residenciais / Telephone survey: valid inferences in regions with low coverage rate of residential lines

Bernal, Regina Tomie Ivata 12 August 2011 (has links)
Some Structural Changes in Educational Enrolment and Attainment Levels within the Female Population of South Africa (2004-2007).

Ramaipato, Nkutloeleng Mary Corda. January 2010 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate patterns in educational enrollment and attainment in educational levels among women in South Africa. Some evidence from the literature suggest a slow increase in women&rsquo / s education and employment opportunities in South Africa. However, little is known about the way in which this slow pattern reflects at all levels and fields of education with special reference to the female population in South Africa. The thesis aims at examining changes of attainment in women&rsquo / s education from a sociodemographic perspective between 2004 and 2007. Factors affecting women&rsquo / s education in South Africa are also considered as they play major roles in women&rsquo / s enrollment and completion at school. The study focuses on women through different social and demographic attributes, by taking account of variables such as age, education attainment, geographic areas, population group to name but a few. All educational institutions are covered and two female groups are considered, women at school and women who left school. The study makes use of already existing data from General Household Survey conducted in 2004 and 2007 respectively, to bring some comparative perspective. The scope of the study is national in that, all the nine provinces are covered making distinction of rural and urban areas.
