Notes from the Neighborhood: Who is writing, what, when, where, how and why

Chadha, Monica 01 July 2014 (has links)
Closure of many mainstream media outlets in towns across the United States have left many neighborhoods bereft of any news about their community. In a number of such areas, former journalists and/or community members have started online news sites that provide news and information to the community. As these outlets focus on a small geographic location, ranging from a neighborhood to a city, they are called hyperlocal news sites. The questions that logically arise then are how are these outlets reporting the news? Are they similar to their mainstream media counterparts or is their approach to news and information different? Most importantly, how do the people who start, or work at these sites, adopt the new all-in-one roles, where they are not only the reporter but also the ad sales manager and the publisher? This dissertation, through a two-method approach, examines these questions and tries to provide answers. An online survey of the people who started and or work for hyperlocal sites, provides data that those working for hyperlocal media have the same demographics as those who work in American mainstream media. The survey results also showed that most of respondents follow the same journalistic behaviors and gatekeeping practices as their mainstream counterparts. From a role identity perspective, the study shows that in the absence of role-models, the journalists-turned-entrepreneurs are in the process of carving a niche for themselves within journalism. In-depth interviews with the respondents reveal that while they identify themselves as journalists, their active role in revenue generation requires them to frame their work identity and present a holistic, positive image of their work. What this study does is capture the dynamism of the journalists’ changing roles. It explains why journalists who start news media sites are unable to monetize their product; they lack role models/exemplars/prototypes that can provide them a blueprint for modeling their behaviors in these new roles as well as the direction in which they take their sites. This research and more in the area can be seen as building blocks towards the creation of a roadmap for them. / text

Superlokalt i Strömsund : En studie av hyperlokala medier från ett medietekniskt perspektiv / Super locally in Strömsund : A study of hyperlocal media from a technological perspective

Nyberg, Robin, Nordin, Tor January 2016 (has links)
This study originated in a discussion regarding an information vacuum in the Swedish countryside. The phenomenon hyperlocal media has been recognized to fill information gaps in the local community. The study examines through seven interviews how hyperlocal media channels are being used by media companies in rural areas. Results show that the media companies are unsure of how to react to a changing media climate where the conditions for the dissemination of information has changed. Hyperlocal media channels are used but the linguistic definition is still unknown for the media companies. It is above all new media companies who embraced the potential of hyperlocal media channels, although social platforms like Facebook have become an effective hyperlocal information and publishing channel for all media companies.

The main goal of this research is to systematize the concepts of the public arena and hyperlocal media, to suggest parameters that enable the identification and to present the analysis about the performance of these means as public microspheres. For the dissertation prep, we chose the descriptive method, from a bibliographical and documentary research regarding the characterization of a hyperlocal communication system and its objectives in democratic societies in order to associate it with the idea of a public arena. We have conducted a case study of the Blog Mafua do HPA (http://mafuadohpa.blogspot.com.br), originated in the city of Bauru, São Paulo, which has been chosen as representative of a hyperlocal media with public microsphere bringing forward to the public reading posts, showing the most frequent characteristics of a hyperlocal media, having a semistructured interview with the blogger, and an online questionnaire with the readers. Thus, we aimed to approach the performance of the Blog Mafua do HPA with the ideas of a hyperlocal media disclaiming a performance in a public arena.

Hyperlocal Public Landscaping : a bottom-up approach to governing the public space

Peterhans, Rasmus Cordis January 2022 (has links)
Public spaces should be public! Their purpose should be to serve the public, not to be convenient for planners, investors and developers. Often, our common ground and imagination of urban landscapes doesn’t go further than a bench, a lawn and, if lucky, a bin. This project explores how public spaces can be governed and organised by the people around it by empowering them to be in the centre of the planning and being able to make decisions and shape their habitat according to their needs, wishes and imagination. As part of this project a guide was created on how to claim and shape one’s local public space together with their community.

NATANAEL D DE FIGUEIREDO NETO 15 April 2021 (has links)
[en] Today media players are facing difficulties and challenges - especially those dedicated to local journalism. The response goes through investing on digital tools and platforms, as well as digital technologies, to engage the audience. The creation of the Hyperlocal desk in Infoglobo s newspapers in 2017 is an example. This dissertation proposes a reflection in conceptual terms on the effectiveness of this strategy. It analyzes the reports produced by that new desk team. Starting from a bibliographic review, this study aims to define the concepts of local journalism and hyperlocal journalism. Then seeks for points of contact and differences between these concepts, facing them up to the work done by Infoglobo newspapers. Finally, this work focuses on the dilemmas and challenges faced by local journalism in a world interconnected by technology.
