Protekcionismus latinskoamerických zemí v době hospodářské krize / Protecionism of Latin American Countries in the Time of an Economic CrisisKurečková, Anna January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the change in response of Latin American governments to the economic crisis and thus the change in the character of protectionist measures applied. How do the means of the protection of domestic market change? How does the financial globalization reflect in the Latin American protectionism? What are the further perspectives of the development of Latin American countries? The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter examines the forms of protectionism in the reaction to economic crisis of the 20th century. Firstly, it presents Latin America as a traditionally protectionist region in the period of the import substitution industrialization, secondly it focuses on governments' reactions to the cyclic crises of the 80s and 90s that were caused by the liberalization of the capital accounts and high sensitivity of Latin American economies to the sudden stop on financial markets. The second chapter is devoted to the current global economic crisis. It analyses the means of trade and financial protectionism. Simultaneously, it compares the protectionist measures used to the ones employed in previous periods. The final part of the thesis explores further perspectives of Latin American regionalism and improved macroeconomic stability of Latin American economies.

Influence of Cholesterol Import on Aspergillus fumigatus Growth and Antifungal SuscepibilityHassan, Saad A. 12 1900 (has links)
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a life-threatening fungal infection commonly observed in immunocompromised patients and has a mortality rate approaching 100% once the disease is disseminated. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common pathogen. Early diagnosis improves the prognosis but is very difficult since most signs and symptoms are nonspecific. Antifungal therapy, usually based on sterol biosynthesis inhibitors, is also of limited efficacy. In my attempts to discover a diagnostic sterol marker for aspergillosis, I observed that A. fumigatus incorporates large amounts of cholesterol from serum-containing medium. This observation suggested the hypothesis that exogenous cholesterol from the host can be imported by A. fumigatus and used as a substitute for ergosterol in the cell membrane. This proposed mechanism would reduce the efficacy of antifungal drugs that act as sterol biosynthesis inhibitors. Experiments to test this hypothesis were designed to determine the effects of serum-free and serum-containing medium on growth of A. fumigatus in the presence and absence of azole antifungal agents. The results showed a marked increase in growth in the presence of human serum. Cultures in media containing cholesterol but no serum also showed enhanced growth, a result indicating that a non-cholesterol component of serum is not primarily responsible for the increased growth. However, sterol analysis of A. fumigatus cultured in the absence of inhibitors showed little or no change in ergosterol levels. This result suggested that the imported cholesterol was not being used as membrane sterol. However, in parallel experiments using Itraconazole, an antifungal agent that attenuates sterol biosynthesis by inhibiting the sterol 14a-demethylase (ERG11), ergosterol levels decreased with increasing doses of inhibitor. Moreover, serum-containing medium partially rescued A. fumigatus from the effects of Itraconazole, and a similar rescue effect was observed with serum-free media containing cholesterol. From the preceding results, it can be concluded that human serum enhances A. fumigatus growth, that cholesterol import rescues Aspergillus from the effects of antifungal agents, that the potency of some azole antifungals is decreased by cholesterol, and that imported cholesterol may substitute for membrane ergosterol in the presence of sterol biosynthesis inhibitors.

Firm heterogeneity and its effects on Firm performance: : A study of Pakistani importing firm’s performanceButt, NABEEL JAVEED, Ahmad, Nayyab January 2020 (has links)
Research on the firm's heterogeneity is a well-developed concept in the export context; literature can found in the export context. Previous research can found on firm heterogeneity and firm performance, but they are in export context. On the other hand, importing firms' heterogeneity is less sought in the literature, which we believe as a clear gap in the export-import research stream. Limited research has done in the context of importing firms. The purpose of our thesis is to explore the different forms of heterogeneities that Pakistani importing firms' practices are gaining a competitive advantage. Furthermore, our goal is to examine the extent of heterogeneity dimensions to what contributes to their performances. There is a significant gap in the research field of import. As there is less research in the import context, this will be a fundamental goal of research towards firms' heterogeneity and the importance of a country.

Investigation of the livestock prices in Sweden and the effect of the membership of the European UnionNordin, Camilla January 2021 (has links)
The aim with this research is to investigate if there is a relationship between import of meat and the price on livestock in Sweden. It also investigates if the Swedish membership of the European Union has affected both the price on livestock and the quantity of import of meat to Sweden. The research is based on a publication from Swedish Board of Agriculture, which indicates that the membership of the European Union has affected the consumer price on agricultural products. This gave the idea that this could have happened on prices of livestock as well. The data is collected from Swedish Board of Agriculture and SCB, for the years of 1970-2019. Regression analysis and paired t-test were supposed to be used for data analysis. The results of stationarity tests implies that regression analysis should not be used regarding the non-stationary result. Therefor were only the stationarity tests and the t-test used. The result of t-test showed that the membership of European Union has affected both price and import in Sweden. To exclude other reasons for the price decrease and the increase of import than the membership is not possible. When comparing the data with other factors and literature the conclusion is that events in the end of the 20th century did affect the price level of livestock and the increased demand for imported meat.
