Eskom nuclear generation : risk mitigation through quality management development of small suppliers

Van Reenen, Olaf Pieter January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Quality)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009 / There is a South African Government initiative to use State-owned Enterprises (SOE’s) to roll out a programme for the development and stimulation of local small businesses in South Africa. The state has requested SOE’s to set targets on a voluntary basis to increase trade with small businesses, with the purpose of developing small enterprises to eventually enhance skills transfer, training and employment. However, when large customers such as Eskom Nuclear Generation require ISO certification as a prerequisite for a supplier to provide goods and/or services to them, most small businesses are unable to comply. The requirement of ISO9000 compliance inhibits the ability of most small businesses to compete with their larger counterparts. Small businesses constitute as much as 90% of most world economies. They have many advantages to offer customers, such as a high level of flexibility, innovation and responsiveness to customer needs. These attributes can introduce healthy competition to the supply chain. Small businesses, by their very nature experience more risks, such as a higher vulnerability to volatile market forces and skills loss. In addition, they are generally less specialised. They are under continuous competitive pressure, and are generally not able to provide assurance of a sustainable product over a longer period. Although there is an imperative to develop and use small suppliers, they introduce higher risk to the supply chain. The primary research objective of this dissertation is to develop a robust model to identify risks inherent to small businesses, and to propose measures to mitigate such risks. A classification of problems with small suppliers that have occurred at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station over a period of 3 years (from June 2005 to May 2008), will form the basis of the research methodology. The anticipated findings of the research include the following. _ Several common critical issues of failure will be identified in the internal processes of small suppliers, with variations between types of suppliers, which will indicate which elements within the context of ISO9000 can be applied to address shortcoming in the suppliers’ processes. _ A matrix will be compiled from this by which the customer can identify the type of supplier, the types of risks inherent to that supplier, and which elements of ISO9000 the customer should insist upon to be adopted into an elementary quality management system of that small supplier. This should be executed as part of a larger supplier development programme.

A exaustão de Sisifo : gestão produtiva, trabalhador contemporaneo e novas formas de controle / The Exhaustion of Sisyphus : Productive management, the contemporary worker, and new means of control

Silva, Rafael Alves da 05 June 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Laymert Garcia dos Santos / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-11T01:27:58Z (GMT). The analysis of the current configuration of production shows a picture in which most recent developments in information technology, associated with new organization methods, make it possible to improve productivity, while reducing production time. Instead of lowering work weariness, this situation has allowed downsizing, thus entailing the intensification of work for those who remain in work, and deteriorating their conditions. Contradictorily, management 'tools¿ associated with toyotism and total quality management demand higher participation and commitment by workers than in other moments such as the main period of fordism. Collaborators¿ cognitive elements are used in a discourse that stimulates creativity, competition, and the continuous search for improvement. Based on the observation of the productive environment and the analyses of standards, such as ISO 9000 and correlate techniques, this research aimed at going beyond the factory walls and understanding the elements that have contributed to constitute such types of worker and society. The combination of toyotism, neoliberalism, and the theory of human capital promotes new means of control in an enterprise-like society, constituted of individuals who must act as 'entrepreneurs¿, investing in themselves, in an effort to live up to market impositions / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia

The manufacturing industry has become very competitive in today's global market environment. Many US companies are faced with the choice of keeping their manufacturing domestic or looking to low cost off-shore countries to take advantage of the labor costs differences. To gain an understanding of the state of manufacturing in China, a major focus in the manufacturing world today, this thesis was undertaken. This thesis presents the findings of research conducted in Guangdong Province, China in June - July, 2005. This research addressed customer focus, leadership and general manufacturing and quality knowledge and practices of small, medium and large sized companies in Guangdong Province, China. Customer focus and leadership are two of the eight fundamental principles of the ISO 9000:2000 family of standards. These two principles, customer focus and leadership, were selected for the foundational role they play in any organization. Companies that are customer focused and have good leadership principles and practices should tend to give quality a priority for the product/service they provide to their customers. The aim of this thesis was to determine if there is a significant difference in the way small, medium and large companies are aligned with these two fundamental principles. Data regarding customer focus, leadership, and general manufacturing and quality knowledge and practices was collected from 41 manufacturing companies in Guangdong Province, China through the use of a survey, interviews and observation. Indicadores empresariais de qualidade de vida no trabalho: esforço empresarial e satisfação dos empregados no ambiente de manufaturas com certificação ISO 9000 / Business indicators of life quality at work: companys effort and employees satisfaction at ISO 9000 certified manufacturers environment.

Franca, Ana Cristina Limongi 20 December 1996 (has links)
This work deals with Life Quality at Work at medium-sized manufacturers that had been awarded ISO 9000 certificate. We targeted investigating the potential relationship between companys effort and employees satisfaction through the selected companys indicators based on criteria of the bio-psycho-social approach. Research method was the field study with the model of dependent and independent variables. Data were collected at 26 companies by 446 questionnaires in the São Paulo Region. Results show first comparisons through exploratory analysis of human resources management and employees. Following, employees satisfaction factors were identified as follows: organizational acting, biological needs, social integration, service rendering; so were the companys effort factors: image, professional development, human resources management, health and ethics, legal actions and energy recovery. By means of a cluster analysis, the employees attitude profile was obtained. They were made distinct among accomplishment, discredit or criticism about the company. Finally, we have obtained results related to kinds of management. Identified kinds were structured, reactive and random. After relating these kinds of management and employees profiles, we could find out that employees satisfaction is based more on the companys image and on medical services and benefits than on the kind of management.
