________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The object of this thesis is the thinking of Galician Franciscan D. Alvaro Pais, concerning the Christian royalty and its purpose as a power capable of managing Christians with justice and to purge the Iberian Peninsula from harmful elements of the catholic faith. The historical context refers to the last quarter of the XIII century and first half of the XIV century. The objectives are to describe and analyze the model of behavior proposed by Franciscan D. Alvaro Pais to the iberian kings, based on a franciscan evangelization project. In his work, he denounces sins and vices of the kings and proposes guidelines for spiritual renovation, based on fulfillment of their attributions as governors empowered by God and in practice as christians observing the cardinal virtues. The documented sources for this study were extracted from the writings of D. Alvaro Pais, with emphasis on the Estado e pranto da Igreja and Espelho dos reis. The last one was written between 1340-1344, and dedicated to D. Alfonso XI (1312-1350). In addition, the Castilian regal chronicles from centuries XIII and XIV, legislative documents as Las siete partidas and Ordenamiento de Alcalá de Henares, among others, were also objects of analysis. Canonic documents, with prominence for the Decretais by Pope Gregory IX, were important to identify the thought of the severe Galician Franciscan about men and women of his time, and who would be apt to effectively govern populus christiano in the secular plan, in regards to the purpose of an Alvarian society. Through this study, it was possible to perceive important economic, social, cultural, religious and political aspects of late Middle Ages on the Iberian Peninsula.

January 2011 (has links)
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to analyze the resumption of the classic hero image, present in Homer's texts, into the Iberian chronicles of low Middle Ages. Specifically, we will get focus into the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, in as much as the Iberian chronicles that have been made in this period had as identity the assign of building a good image of their kings. This movement delineates an attempt for the consolidation of Iberian nationality feelings - but, is important to highlight, it cannot be confused with the national knowingness of Absolutists States - it allows us to notice the reinforcement of the regionalist and dynastic feelings. We seek to perceive the meaning alteration from the Greek hero for the medieval hero, taking in account the concept of virtue considered in Middle Ages for the "men's ideal type" in the chronicles, from the chivalrous moral in craze. For that, we will employ the Crónica Troiana, since this is the medieval write which better represents the histories of mythology and ancient epic. Our first interest consists of thinking about how the Crónica Troiana was made and from witch papers it could born. Beyond this one, produced in Alfonso's XI court (in Castile) we intend to argue about the hero picture in General Estoria of Alfonso X and in La Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1334, written by Dom Pedro, Count of Barcelos. Those papers present us histories about their ancestors and bounces that they are models to be followed. We also propound to think about the reasons that encouraged the compilers from Alfonso's XI court to write about Trojan history, the different moral values present in the way the legend was narrated in times and, in the end, the incidence in Middle Ages of other models that can correspond to a heroic figure, as the saints and the kings. / Mestre

This thesis proposes the study of the role of the devil in three important narratives of miracles, produced in the Iberian Peninsula in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, from a political perspective. Above all, it is intended to analyze how these narratives, with supernatural characteristics, integrates - or not - the logics of the wordly society that made it real. The extensive historiography on the devil in the Middle Ages emphasizes above all two diabolical profiles: one as farcical/grotesque and another as an instrument of domination and terror. However, based on the Cantigas de Santa María, compiled by Alfonso X of Castile´s orders, on the Los Milagros de Nuestra Señora, by Gonzalo de Berceo, and on an important manuscript that chronicles lives and miracles of saints, guarded in the Library of the Universidade de Brasilia, of unknown authorship, it is possible to problematize these profiles, in order to historicize them and to make them less caricatural and/or exotic. The analysis of the various roles assumed by the devil in these narratives allows to frame their existence within the logics of the juridical and political plurality of feudal society and to understand the dynamics derived from the deep interweaving between religion and politics.

Taking textual, iconographic and, mainly, cartographic sources by reference the present study is based on a critical analysis of the processes and events responsible for the consolidation of the different forms of perception and representation of the sacred spaces in the medieval Christian West. Spaces of worship, devotion and pilgrimage that go beyond the limits of its material domain and find, in the context of religious thought, new shapes, meanings and symbologies. Key features of a sacred geography, which had been progressively built throughout the Middle Ages, these loca sancta act as a memory space of Christianity, calling forth practices, speeches and behaviors that branch out among the different strata of medieval society. As subtle evidences of a complex social structure, we believe that these representations were effectively capable of register the sensitivities of a society outlined by the dual complexity of the sacred and the profane. Therefore, in addition of the aspects that rule the principles of its artistic and intellectual production, we are equally interested on the understanding of the practices and realities that pervade the daily life of those men and women who thought, traced and, in their own way, have made an operative use of writings and images, tranced and, in their own way, made operational use of these texts and images.

Sabino, Amanda Mantoan. January 2018 (has links)
Imbued with the task of spreading the marvels found in these lands and emphasizing the differences between the pagan rites of the East and the sacraments of the Church of Rome, many missionaries bequeathed accounts and letters in which they described the singularities of the stories they lived and testimonies of men known to the during the walk to the court of the Khan. More precisely, Friars minors such as Guilherme de Rubruc and Montecorvino sought to report the relationship of the Tartar-Mongols and other peoples with their deities, highlighting the format of their worship services, as well as the role conferred on priests of different faiths in India and China. Serializing reports written by Franciscans in this period, this research will seek to examine the goals of the missions of these mendicants and also their impressions of the cults practiced in these plagues. Rather, the aim of this study will be to examine how the followers of Francis of Assisi described the customs of the Tatars and heretical Christians of this region, such as the Alans, Nestorian... A recepção do mito de Heráclio por Gautier d'Arras /

Souza, Guilherme Queiroz de. January 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Ruy de Oliveira Andrade Filho / Banca: Ana Paula Tavares Magalhães / Banca: Terezinha Oliveira / Banca: Celso Taveira / Banca: Ricardo Gião Bortolotti / Resumo: Esta tese analisa a recepção do mito do basileus Heráclio (c. 575-641) pelo clérigo francês Gautier d'Arras. Em Eracle (fim do século XII), romance octossilábico tripartite (6570 versos), Gautier adaptou a trajetória biográfica do soberano bizantino, do nascimento à morte. Da mesma forma, a "atualização" do conteúdo da Reversio tornou o governante bizantino um homem mais familiar ao público do século XII / Abstract: This thesis analyzes the reception of the myth of the basileus Heraclius (ca. 575-641) by the French cleric Gautier d'Arras. In Eracle (late 12th century), tripartite octosyllabic romance (6570 verses), Gautier adapted the biographical trajectory of the Byzantine ruler, from his birth to his death. Especially in the third part of the work, the author was based in the Reversio Sanctae Crucis, liturgical text that popularized the Heraclian myth in the Western Christian imaginary. In Reversio, whose authorship was attributed to the Carolingian Rabanus Maurus, are celebrated the triumph of Heraclius against the Persians and the recovery of the relic of the Holy Cross and of Jerusalem. Initially we analyze the origin of the myth in three authors of the Western Early Middle Ages: two from "historical tradition" (Fredegar and Mozarabic Chronicler) and one from "legendary tradition" (Pseudo-Rabanus). Then, we enter into the core of the thesis, with the exam of the reception and "literarization" of the mythical figure of Heraclius by Gautier d'Arras. Influenced by a symbolic language, the cleric introduced the stages of the hero's childhood/youth (1st part of the romance) and adapted the narrative of the Reversio (3rd part of the romance). With his literary talent and imaginative freedom, Gautier potentiated certain characteristics of the basileus and originally introduced others, which resulted in a singular character. In the same way, the "update" of Reversio content became the Byzantine ruler a more familiar man to the public of the 12th century / Doutor

Teodoro, Leandro Alves. January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to map the place and values of the story the clergy and the laity in Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the history comes to be seen as an important tool not only for the legitimization of power, but also in the forming of the men of the kingdom. Will be collated the Crónicas Breves, produced in the monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra in the 14th century, and those written by the official chroniclers Fernão Lopes, Gomes Eanes de Zurara and Rui de Pina in the File regal in the 15th century. With the objective of to examine if there was a change of perspective in the way of conceiving the history of the monastic chroniclers and lay chroniclers, we will consider the extent to which there can be continuously and / or split between the religious and the secular conservation of the past. In particular, we aim to show how the royal and monastic chroniclers thought the story in an opposition Evil / Good and structured from the game between moments of peace and war.

January 2011 (has links)
From amidst XIIIth century, a series of religious from the most important Mendicant Orders, Franciscans and Dominicans, started to defend the relevancy of visit and describe the people and places of the lands outside the Christendom, especially those which were located inwards the Asiatic mainland. Theretofore, descriptions as these were depreciated by the religious ones, thought as a ken which couldn't contribute to the spiritual improvement of the Christians, being, this way, a blamable and misfortunate way of knowledge. A new interest for these lands was thanks to the informations and news broadcasted through the Christendom, narrating the existence of very different eastern men, masterful of a great Empire. Many men started to travel to these lands, intending to observe the people and the places to, in the end, write about the eastern habits, the routes themselves crossed, and whatever else could be seen or heard. The main purpose of this research it's in realize how this process - where the Asiatic mainland became the aim of western interest, between the XIII and XIVth centuries - could happen. In other words, we intent to see how those people and places became the protagonists of a countless travel reports where their physical and cultural characteristics were described. Through the descriptions made by the travelers, we want to understand how the Mendicant Friars could found a place to the knowledge of the ―eastern parts‖ into their project of faith's improvement and proliferation on faraway lands / Mestre
