Marta Ribeiro Ramos 28 April 2008 (has links)
This work consists of a research carried through with professors who worked in the CEFAM - Centro de Formação e Aperfeiçoamento do Magistério - situated public school in the city of São José dos Campos and in the, e no Centro de Ensino Educàre school of the private net of the same city. Our objective age to investigate the education of Normative Grammar in the school, in the average level, exciting a reflection concerning its education in the school, having as base the historical process that institutionalized it. For in such a way, we harvest depositions and we analyze them of agreement with some concepts of the Analysis of the Speech, mainly for the bias of the formation and discursive memory, therefore we judge that such estimated would be adjusted to observe, in the teaching speech, the underlying effect of direction to the linguistic materiality of the statements. Of this form, it would be possible to identify more critically which images permearam the decision to teach to the grammar, considering itself the aspect of the memory, constructed throughout the respective partner-historical trajectories, under determined production conditions . Our analyses had concluded that, even so it has the contrary current speeches to the utility of the education of the grammar, the speech of the professors evidenced that the professors they value education of the Grammar in the courses of Average Education.

The presentation of images on screens of mobile devices has limitations that depend on the user experience. The adaptation of images is pack the size and resolution to be visualized on the device screen. The use of a visual attention mechanism allows reducing efforts in processing the visual stimulus of the human eye. Models of visual attention also help to reduce the computational complexity of image processing applications. We propose an improvement to this model of visual attention to be applied to the adaptation of images on screens of mobile devices / Mestrado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

This dissertation looked to investigate how the indigenous people are utilizing audiovisual resources, particularly video, to present themselves to other peoples both indigenous and non-indigenous. This being based on the analysis of three videos. The topic seems relevant in that anthropology must attend to the ways that our interlocutors are selecting to relate/communicate. In the first chapter, I sought to show that anthropology and cinema both surfaced at approximately the same period in the end of the 19th century and that the first crews to work in the field used cameras as a way to record the native populations. I approach the first references of etnographic films until I arrive at the shared perspective of Jean Rouch's cinematic work, which, to some extent, anticipated the epistemological upheaval undergone by anthropology, especially from the 1980's onward, in which the representations and reflections of the until-then natives acquired a new place. From this point I worked on the question of why auto-representation can be a means through which one could approach the indigenous videos and resume with some theoretical contributions on the topic. In the next chapter, I approached the beginning of indigenous audiovisual productions in Brazil from the bibliographical sources that inform us about two experiences: the Kayapó and the Waiãpi. These are emblematic cases due to the pioneering of these peoples in the use of cameras and video, but also due to these being experiences that have had considerable divulgation and reflection. In the third and final chapter, I analyzed the three videos searching to confront representations, which are: what the indigenous peoples are making of themselves and others and my representations which were drawn after reading these representations, seeking to raise the themes and pointing out the discursive strategies mobilized in the auto-representations proportioned by the videos / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestra em Antropologia Social

[en] APPLICATIONS OF NEURAL NETWORKS IN IMAGE DIAGNOSIS / [pt] APLICAÇÕES DE REDES NEURAIS A DIAGNÓSTICO POR IMAGENS

ELIAS RESTUM ANTONIO 09 November 2005 (has links)
[en] This dissertation presents applications of Artificial Neural Networks to the image diagnosis process. Some concepts of Neural Networks are presented with foundations, learning algorithms and topologies used. Due to the need of pre-processing the input data, subjects related to the analysis of medical images from an expert point of view are considered. Among the analyzed aspects are the density, the form, the size and the location of these characteristic aspects of the image. Slight focus is given to the concept of space as well as to the process of digitalizing images adopted here. It was also prepared a routine that has the objective to facilitate handling and preparation of the images for the use with neural networks techniques. Synthetic data was elaborated and numeric experiments are presented using these data. Numeric experiments are presented with real data extracted from neurological images of Computerized Tomography, from images of the saturation of fluids in a porous environment generated in a CT Scanner, adapted for these analyses, property of CENPES - Petrobrás and also adontological images of simple x-rays showing abscesses, cists and granulated tissues. Both the tests with synthetic data and the tests with real data showed satisfactory results and, finally, some considerations are made on the perspectives of evolution of the method.

The effect of the introduction of picture archive and communication systems (PACS) on patient radiation doses and patient management

Weatherburn, Gwyneth Christine January 2000 (has links)
This thesis considers the effects of Picture Archive and Communications Systems (PACS), on both patient radiation doses and patient management. PACS is a relatively new technology which acquires, transmits, and stores radiological images digitally. This thesis investigates the doses which are required to produce radiographic images which are acceptable to radiologists and referring clinicians, and compares these doses with those required for the film/screen systems which they are replacing. A review of the literature shows that despite claims of dose reductions, very little good evidence exists about dose changes with the introduction of PACS. A comparison of images of test objects indicates that the images are comparable under limited conditions, that PACS has a much wider latitude than film (>250 mAs), and that contrast detail improves with increase in exposure. Two original observational studies are described in which PACS and film doses are compared for examinations of two groups of adult patients. The results indicate that the doses for PACS equate to those used with a 300 speed film/screen system thus necessitating dose increases of around 30% for the majority of adult patients in the UK. The issue of whether the number of images which are repeated, with additional patient doses, due to unsatisfactory images (rejected images), or unavailability of the images when clinically required (lost images), is addressed and indicates that PACS may allow a dose saving of 1.1 % and 1.4% respectively. The overall result of these studies indicates that the widespread introduction of PACS is likely to increase population doses. Two original studies which consider patients within the Accident and Emergency department are described. These studies aim to produce evidence to justify the introduction of the new technology, despite higher radiation doses, by identifying improvements in patient management which might improve patient outcomes. The results of these studies provide little evidence of such benefits to patients. This thesis concludes that the use of current PAC systems produces an increase in the radiation dose to the adult population in the UK, without demonstrable improvements in patient management.

Daesh's Construction of  Enemy Images : - A study of Enemy Images in Dabiq Magazine

Warsame, Abdihakim Barre January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to examine how Daesh constructs the enemy images of their opponents and who the opponents are.  The study adopted enemy image theories as for the theoretical base to understand how Daesh constructs and propagates these enemy images. This study is carried out on qualitative abductive desk study with discourse analysis as the method and relied on Dabiq as the primary data.  Daesh employs enemy images to effectively paint a negative image of the opponent while calling for a variety of actions from their followers. The primary data shows some concepts and themes that are used in enemy image construction being present in Dabiq. The results of of the analysis show that Daesh uses the delimitation between them and us,  a set of values that separate the two groups. This is what has been described as "our" and "their" essence and the final aim which is legitimized war or violence is very clear in Dabiq. This thesis also suggests other ways of looking at the concept of enemy images suggesting further research areas where deemed necessary.

Mental images in cinema : flashback, imagined voices, fantasy, dream, hallucination and madness in film

Luchoomun, Lawrence January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis we consider cinema’s representations of mental images. Our central concerns are the formal aspects of the presentation of memory and imagination, and the various functions which the different types of mental images perform. While along the way we engage with a number of expedient theories, on the whole the argument is free of any over-arching theoretical approach, instead focusing largely on the evidence of the wide range of films — from different eras, genres and national cinemas — with which we engage. We begin with a consideration of filmic representations of memory, tackling such questions as: What exactly is a flashback? What different functions do flashbacks perform? What is the relationship between flashback and the mental images of memory? Identifying an inadequacy in current terminology, we here introduce the concept of ‘act of memory’ in order to distinguish between representations of the past which constitute an analogue of the mental images of memory and more properly subjective representations of mental images. In Part II we develop a taxonomy of the major forms of imagination. Here our discussion of imagination draws on cognitive and phenomenological theories of imagination, and the chapter on dreams draws substantially on Freud. In our consideration of the functions of the various sorts of mental images we establish a series of character types who are prone to experiencing mental images. Throughout Part II we argue that representations of mental images are often closely related to themes of madness — that many representations of mental images can be understood as traces of madness.

RESPONSIVE IMAGES : Comparing techniques for implementing responsive images to websites

Björnsson, Jafet Bjarkar January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores responsive images for websites, i.e., content images that respond to users display size, pixel density and bandwidth. We look into responsive web design and how it is related to responsive images. Different responsive image techniques are discussed and various use cases for responsive images are explored along with technologies that are needed to implement responsive images. A testing website is built and responsive image techniques are applied one by one, tested and compared and its effect on the websites load time is measured. The process of implementing the techniques is described with code examples and images. The results indicate that responsive images can certainly have positive effect on loading time of a website. Weather or not responsive images should be implemented depends on how much image data the website has and how fast the Internet connection is. Websites with more images can certainly profit from using responsive image techniques, especially if only slower bandwidths are available.

[en] HERZOG`S ELDORADO: THE PURSUIT OF ABSOLUTE IMAGES AND INTENSIFIED TRUTHS / [pt] O ELDORADO DE HERZOG: A BUSCA POR IMAGENS ABSOLUTAS E VERDADES INTENSIFICADAS

LUCIA FERREIRA TUPIASSU 30 November 2010 (has links)
[en] Starting from the reading of two films directed by Werner Herzog, both made in the Amazon region, Aguirre - The Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982), we intend to identify the pursuit of absolute images in nature and of the intensified truths through art. The concept of ecstatic truth articulates some of the central questions of this study, such as the tensions between ethics and aesthetics in art, film authorship, the peculiarities of this German filmmaker and, finally, the representation of the Amazon space in cinema.
