These immiscibles are chemicals such as edible oils, lubricant oil and petrochemical solvents. The final destinations of these wastewaters is the river. It is very difficult to separate immiscibles with diameter drop less than 40 µm from the wastewater. The best separation technology available today still produces clean water with drops below 20 microns and with immiscible content of 10 mg/l. In 1984 the author of this work accidentally created one coalescence film equipment. The pilot scale test results were successful in separating immiscibles from wastewater in a petrochemical plant. The glass pilot plant operated continuously. The kind of control plant it is visual to detect the turbidity. The homogenous liquid wastewater is fed to the top of the coalescence equipment. The liquid issue. the bottom of equipment had two phases. The lower phase was turbid and the upper phase was not. Unfortunately the investigation was stopped at the time. Based on the research developed in 1984, the objective of this work is to study the phenomena of coalescence of the liquid film and to develop a kinetic coalescence model and a design model for a coalescence equipment. This present work is theoretical based on the experimental date (process flowsheet and design equipment) obtained in 1984. There are three main objectives: the first objective is to understand the coalescence phenomena; the second is to understand the development of coalescer technology; the third is to compile all relevant scientific and technological knowledge for this research. The investigation used the inductive deduction method and the old proportional equation technique to suggest a mechanism and kinetic equation to describe the film coalescence phenomenon. The NavierStokes equation was used to determine the drop concentration profile in the film, in order to produce a way to design the equipment. One conclusion is that each immiscible chemical behave differently in water. The applied energy also plays a role. Another pilot plant will only confirm what has been done and give isolated immiscible products drop concentration / Doutorado / Desenvolvimento de Processos Químicos / Mestre em Engenharia Química

The Effect of Bulk Composition on the Sulfur Content of CoresJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: This study explores how bulk composition and oxygen fugacity (fO2) affect the partitioning of sulfur between the molten mantle and core of an early planetesimal. The model can be used to determine the range of potential sulfur concentrations in the asteroid (16) Psyche, which is the target of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Arizona State University Psyche Mission. This mission will be our visit to an M-type asteroid, thought to be dominantly metallic.
The model looks at how oxygen fugacity (fO2), bulk composition, temperature, and pressure affect sulfur partitioning in planetesimals using experimentally derived equations from previous studies. In this model, the bulk chemistry and oxygen fugacity of the parent body is controlled by changing the starting material, using ordinary chondrites (H, L, LL) and carbonaceous chondrites (CM, CI, CO, CK, CV). The temperature of the planetesimal is changed from 1523 K to 1873 K, the silicate mobilization and total melting temperatures, respectively; and pressure from 0.1 to 20 GPa, the core mantle boundary pressures of Vesta and Mars, respectively.
The final sulfur content of a differentiated planetesimal core is strongly dependent on the bulk composition of the original parent body. In all modeled cores, the sulfur content is above 5 weight percent sulfur; this is the point at which the least amount of other light elements is needed to form an immiscible sulfide liquid in a molten core. Early planetesimal cores likely formed an immiscible sulfide liquid, a eutectic sulfide liquid, or potentially were composed of mostly troilite, FeS. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Geological Sciences 2020

Characterization of Electrostatic Spray Breakup in Immiscible FluidOmar Aljowaiser (14226896) 08 December 2022 (has links)

Electrostatic spray is a spray that is induced by an interaction between the surface charge on the liquid meniscus and the externally applied electrical field that forms a conical shape known as the Taylor Cone. Electrostatic spray can be seen in a variety of different fields in modern times, such as, agriculture, combustion, space propulsion, and medical applications. The experimental setup for any electrostatic spray consists of the following components: a syringe pump filled with an ionic fluid, a high voltage power supply, and a ground source. The orientation of the nozzle, set to a horizontal or vertical orientation, and the interface that is examined, liquid/air or liquid/liquid interface are two parameters that can vary from one setup to another while still using the same components to form the electrostatic spray. In this experimental study, the characteristic of the electrostatic spray of two immiscible fluids, liquid/liquid interface, with a horizontal nozzle orientation, was analyzed. The two immiscible fluids that were chosen for this experiment were olive oil, the ambient fluid, and pure ethanol, the working fluid. A set range of 0 – 5 kV with an increment of 0.5 kV was applied to the working fluid with a flowrate of 0.1 mL/min. The distance between the nozzle and the copper disk was also altered for three different distances, 22.09, 14.6 and 10.33 mm. Different patterns and trajectories were captured and analyzed using both a high-speed camera and a long exposure camera. Formation of vortices was recorded in the induced flow. The general trend was found was an increase in the droplets’ velocity with the increase of the applied voltage. Additionally, there was an increase in the droplets’ velocity was recorded as the copper disk was moved closer to the nozzle. A dimensional number, Jowaiser’s number Jo, has been proposed where it relates the electric forces to the inertial forces. It can be used to predicts the phase that the flow experiences. The four phases that a flow can experience are the droplet phase, transition phase, spray phase, and the shorting phase.

The Effect of Drop Size Distribution, Feed Concentration, and Volume Split on the Separation of Two Immiscible Liquids in a Hydrocyclone.Burrill, Kenneth A. 05 1900 (has links)

The separation of a mixture of carbon tetrachloride in water was studied in a 2 inch diameter glass hydrocyclone. First, the effect of a mixing valve and of oil/water ratio on the volume/surface diameter of the dispersion in the feed to the hydrocyclone was studied using a statistical experiment design. Secondly, the effect of feed drop size distribution, oil/water ratio, and overflow/underflow split on the separation in the hydrocyclone was determined, again using a statistical experiment design. In both designs, five levels of each variable were studied. Flow rate, design shape, and temperature were kept constant. The range of variables was:

1. Mixing Value Pressure Drop 17.95 to 88.25 mm. Hg

2. Oil/Water Ratio 0.132 to 0.211

3. Overflow/Underflow Split 4/1 to 8/1

From the first part of the work it was found that oil/water ratio had no significant effect on the volume/surface diameter, and that there was a linear relationship between the volume/surface diameter and mixing valve pressure drop.

From the second part of the work it was found that volume split had most significant effect on hydrocyclone separation for the range of variables studied. The oil/water ratio had the next most significant effect on separation, and finally, drop size distribution was also found to be significant, but was the least important of the three variables. The interactions of the variables were no significant. The hydrocyclone separation could be predicted. The prediction of the overflow drop-size distribution agreed very well with the distribution observed photographically. Both predictions required assumptions that short-circuit flow and drop-drop coalescence was negligible.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Multiphase Contamination in Rock Fractures : Fluid Displacement and Interphase Mass Transfer / Flerfasföroreningar i sprickigt berg : Utbredning och massöverföring mellan faserYang, Zhibing January 2012 (has links)
Multiphase flow and transport in fractured rock is of importance to many practical and engineering applications. In the field of groundwater hydrology an issue of significant environmental concern is the release of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) which can cause long-term groundwater contamination in fractured aquifers. This study deals with two fundamental processes – fluid displacement and interphase mass transfer – concerning the behavior of the multiphase contaminants in fractured media. The focus of this work has been placed on improving the current understanding of small-scale (single fracture) physics by a combined effort of numerical modeling analysis, laboratory experiments and model development. This thesis contributes to the improved understanding through several aspects. Firstly, the effect of aperture variability, as characterized by geostatistical parameters such as standard deviation and correlation length, on the DNAPL entrapment, dissolution and source-depletion behaviors in single fractures was revealed. Secondly, a novel, generalized approach (adaptive circle fitting approach) to account for the effect of in-plane curvature of fluid-fluid interfaces on immiscible fluid displacement was developed; the new approach has demonstrated good performance when applied to simulate previously published experimental data. Thirdly, the performance of a continuum-based two-phase flow model and an invasion percolation model was compared for modeling fluid displacement in a variable-aperture fracture and the dependence of fracture-scale capillary pressure – saturation relationships on aperture variability was studied. Lastly, through experimental studies and mechanistic numerical modeling of DNAPL dissolution, kinetic mass transfer characteristics of two different entrapment configurations (residual blobs and dead-end pools) were investigated. The obtained understanding from this thesis will be useful for predictive modeling of multiphase contaminant behavior at a larger (fracture network) scale.

Lattice-Boltzmann method and immiscible two-phase flowRannou, Guillaume 19 November 2008 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) and its ability to simulate immiscible two-phase flow. We introduce the main lattice-Boltzmann-based approaches for analyzing two-phase flow: the color-fluid model by Gunstensen, the interparticle-potential model by Shan and Chen, the free-energy model by Swift and Orlandini, and the mean-field model by He.
The first objective is to assess the ability of these methods to maintain continuity at the interface of two fluids, especially when the two fluids have different viscosities or densities. Continuity issues have been mentioned in the literature but have never been quantified. This study presents a critical comparison of the four lattice-Boltzmann-based approaches for analyzing two-phase flow by analyzing the results of the two-phase Poiseuille flow for different viscosity ratios and density ratios.
The second objective is to present the capability of the most recent version of the color-fluid model for simulating 3D flows. This model allows direct control over the surface tension at the interface. We demonstrate the ability of this model to simulate surface tension effects at the interface (Laplace bubble test), stratified two-phase flows Poiseuille two-phase flow), and bubble dynamics (the free rise of a bubble in a quiescent viscous fluid).

[en] VISUALIZATION IN MICROMODELS OF OIL DISPLACEMENT BY O/W EMULSIONS / [pt] VISUALIZAÇÃO EM MICROMODELOS DA RECUPERAÇÃO DE ÓLEO POR EMULSÕES O/WGABRIEL BARROCAS DE OLIVEIRA CRUZ 14 January 2019 (has links)
[en] The efficiency of water flooding, the most common secondary recovery method in the oil industry, is limited by its non-uniform sweep pattern, originating from the formation of preferential paths because of the high mobility ratio between water and oil, and the high residual oil saturation, associated with capillary oil trapping. In order to improve oil recovery, different approaches have been suggested in the literature, with some of them based on pore blocking and consequent water diversion, thus sweeping a bigger area of the reservoir and displacing more of the trapped oil. Pore blockage can be performed with different methods, one of which is emulsion flooding, with the disperse phase, composed by oil drops, acting as the agent responsible for the decreased water phase mobility. In this work, the fundamental mechanisms of emulsion
flooding process was studied experimentally, by visualizing the pore-scale flow in a glass microfluidic device composed of a network of constricted channels, that models the main features of a porous media. The results show the effect of drop size and capillary number on the flow pattern, trapped oil ganglia size and residual oil recovery.

Studium proudění na rozhraní nemísitelných kapalin / Study of the flow at the interface of immiscible liquidsLunda, Filip January 2021 (has links)
This theses deals with flow of two immisible fluid in horizontal pipeline. First part teoretically describes immisible flow. What follows is experimental measurement in wich experimental track was adjusted for inlet of oil from the top. Water and corn germ oil were used as fluids. There were observed many modes of flow on the track. After that PIV was described and measured. PIV was done for measurement of values of velocity vectors. Simulation of one chosen mode was developed in the last chapter. This simulation was done in Ansys Fluent with help of VOF method. Simulation was done both in 3D and 2D pipeline. In the end these simulation were compared with experiment measurement and were critically evaluated.
