"El negro trás de la oreja": The Contemporary Portrayal of Blacks in Mainstream Media and Popular Music in the Dominican Republic

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This master's thesis examines negative stereotypes of blackness in mainstream media in the Dominican Republic, and analyzes the manner in which racial identity has been reinforced and contested. Discourse analysis is utilized to analyze the language and rhetoric of editorials from Listin Diario. The rationale for this study is to assess how Dominicans have learned about blackness through the depictions in media and popular music, and therefore draw conclusions as to how Dominicans view their own racial identity. Considerable attention will be paid to the years between 2010-2013, using the Haitian earthquake disaster of 2010 and Verdict TC 0168-13 of the Dominican Constitutional Tribunal of 2013 as major historical events to frame the study. To these assumptions, this inquiry addresses the following questions: How have Haitians been portrayed in the mainstream newspaper of Listin Diario between the period of 2010-2013? How do the pedagogies in media and popular music educate Dominicans about portrayals of blackness during this period? What are the historiographical roots of these portrayals, particularly regarding the dynamics of race and citizenship? I will demonstrate that the prevailing depictions of Haitians adhere to a historically oriented construction of Dominican identity, known as "Dominicanidad" or "Dominicanness," and that these depictions largely omit African heritage as a contributor to national identity. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. Social and Cultural Pedagogy 2014

Publications on diet, nutrition and its relationship to health in the major São Paulo newspapers: what is being produced and published?

Nadine Marques Nunes-Galbes 07 October 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Nutrition is one of the basic requirements for health promotion and protection, and a key strategy for the development of an appropriate and healthy eating pattern is the strengthening of critical thinking and individual autonomy. Therefore, it is essential to have access to clear and accurate information so that can assist in choosing safe and suitable food. In light of this, it is necessary to understand in which way information about feed, nutrition and health is being disseminated by the mass media nowadays. Objective: To analyze the amount, characteristics and content of publications which present the topic \"feed, nutrition and its relationship to health,\" belonging to the two major newspapers from São Paulo. Methods: The study had as central investigation technique the research and selection of publications in printed and digital versions of the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo (journal A) and O Estado de S. Paulo (journal B), with subsequent analysis according to thematic content analysis method. A stratified sampling was performed on a constructed week and on a current week, from May to July of 2015. The inclusion criteria of the publications were based on addressing issues in feed and nutrition, and its relationship to health should necessarily be established. Results and discussion: It were identified 18 publications that met the inclusion criteria, present both in printed and the digital versions of each of the newspapers analyzed (publications \"in common\"). It were selected 16 publications from journal A and two from journal B which shows numerical superiority of one newspaper on the other. The higher number of publications in digital version as well as the amount of blogs associated with newspapers indicates a possible migration of content on the topic of interest to the digital version of the newspapers, especially in the case of journal B. Except for the titles of the publications, which differed between digital and printed versions of each of the newspapers (most visible feature in journal A than in journal B), the contents of the selected publications showed practically identical. With regard to the messages identified in publications, there was a predominance of negative health concept (absence of disease), the biomedical model, the sanitary rationality and supremacy of science over other sources of knowledge. Similarly, it was verified the medicalization of feed components. In contrast, the presence (albeit discreet) of a more holistic look at feed and nutrition has been identified, as well as the speech of \"ordinary people\", although in an amount considerably smaller than the health professionals speech. This fact, coupled with the discreet reference to media as diffusing potentially harmful information to individuals with regard to food choices were points that drew attention because escaped the standard of the prevailing messages in publications. Conclusion: The publications of the two major newspapers from São Paulo reproduce and reinforce predominantly social representations that do not stimulate the development of critical thinking, either strengthen the autonomy of the individuals, going against the principles advocated for Health Promotion. However, it was identified potential change in the direction of messages, with the presence of popular voices, plus a discreet criticism of the media itself.

Processos de socialização em jornalismo: adestrando \'focas\' ou treinando trainees / Socialization processes in journalism: training \"focas\" or trainees

Rodrigo Gomes Lobo 19 November 2010 (has links)
How do beginners turn into journalists? How do they define what is journalism? What enables them to carry out their activities and confirm their status as journalists? Which are other agents and agencies involved in this process? This thesis discusses these issues from two journalism courses offered by companies that operate in São Paulo, focusing on daily print journalism. Through interviews and ethnography of these two spaces of socialization, this work intends to analyze the worldviews and conceptions of knowledge involved in such learning contexts. Those types of knowledge engender matrices of perception, action and assessment of the reality in which are imbedded several vital interests: political, marketing, journalism.

This study aims to analyze, based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the discourse analysis proposed by Pêcheux and also based on the concept of silence, made by Eni Orlandi, such as Veja and IstoÉ reported, producing effects directions, the demonstrations that took place in June 2013 and how these publications reported these events after a year in 2014 in Brazil. Whereas the discursive analysis assumes take into account the speech in his speech conditions, the objective is to discuss about the role of media, relating to the production of meaning to the demonstrations as journalistic event. The work corpus consists of editions of magazines Veja and Isto two representatives publications of calls weekly magazine Brazilian information, which presented as featured on their covers the June 2013 demonstrations in comparison to issues relating to the same dates, published in 2014. The reports on the 2013 demonstrations were featured on the covers in three consecutive editions of the magazine Isto É and five editions See. In 2014, Veja and Isto published in their reporting covers about cup football world, with few references to the events of the previous year. Thus, the manifestations are mentioned indirectly in various reports, without any mention of the historical event that had occurred in the country a year before. Although not appear on the covers and rarely the main reports that integrate the publications, there were demonstrations in 2014, mainly in the cities that hosted the games of the national team, which leads us to reflect on the causes that motivated this silence by the publications . At first, the two magazines appear to support their sayings in different speeches, but in relation to erase the anniversary of one of the largest demonstrations in the history of the country, the two magazines dialogue with the same speech: silence

Israeli-Palestinian Spiral: Compliance and Silence of Political Opinions in the Canadian Print Media

Jennings, Michelle January 2011 (has links)
The news media serve as the Canadian public’s main source of information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This thesis examines the ways in which the Canadian media portray the conflict, through a lens of Habermas’ (1962) public sphere theory, Foucault’s (1926 – 1984) ideas on discourse, and Rawls’ (1921 – 2002) conceptions of equality and justice. Building on these theories, Noelle-Neumann’s Spiral of Silence theory (1974), Said’s Orientalism (1978), and d’Arcy’s (1913 – 1983) conception of the right to communicate are examined to arrive at a framework for analyzing Canadian news. Looking at ideological representations, power manifestations, issue framing, and social responsibility within the media, this thesis explores whether the Canadian media portray the conflict in such a way that fosters a downward spiral of opinions within the Canadian public. A Critical Discourse Analysis of coverage in two national English Canadian newspapers, The Globe and Mail and the National Post, during three separate timeframes of increased violence in Israel and Palestine between 2000 and 2009 reveals that newspaper representations of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are often entrenched in predefined ways of portraying the Other, fostering an Israeli-Palestinian spiral of silence in Canadian media.

Falta, Matěj January 2020 (has links)
Diploma thesis Te splendors and miseries of DTP: desktop publishing and common practice of Czech publishing houses tries to map the current technical and personnel aspect of the DTP departments within Czech publishing houses. It uses a quantitative method of questionnaire survey. In the practical part of the research, it managed to obtain data from nine of the ten selected publishers. It was chosen on the basis of their readership with the help of data from the Union of Publishers. Undoubtedly, the main contribution of this thesis is the topic itself - text focuses on a group of media professionals, who are crucial for proper functioning of the print media, although it is constantly overlooked by academia. Tis diploma thesis does not bring any revolutionary knowledge about the feld of print media in the Czech Republic, although with the obtained data it is possible to at least partially analyze jobs and style of work of media professionals in DTP departments. Determining the effectiveness of health communication in the Gauteng province : a case study of child immunisation in the Vaal Region.

Matsoso, Lebohang Mampone Lesego 28 February 2019 (has links)
M. Tech. (Public Relations Management, Faculty of Human Sciences), Vaal University of Technology / Health communication has become an integral component of quality health care. However, it is not just the process of giving information, but rather an active process that facilitates the use of information to improve decision-making and change behaviour that lead to positive health outcomes. Therefore, effective communication should be encouraged by means of two-way interaction between the health practitioners and the patients. The purpose of this research study was to determine the effectiveness of health communication in the Vaal region, using Levai Mbatha clinic as a case study. The study used the mixed method design consisting of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Quantitative research design was done through the distribution of questionnaires to parents in order to ascertain how child immunisation issues are communicated to them. Simple random sampling approach was used to gather the data, and the sample size for this design was 100 parents. For the qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews was used to determine the effectiveness of health communication information as disseminated by health practitioners to parents. Purposive sampling approach was used to select six (6) health practitioners. From the descriptive results (quantitative) it was evident that there is ineffective health communication at Levai Mbatha clinic. Parents are not aware of other illnesses related to child immunisation, and they feel that it would be better if the content of communication mediums were to be written in their mother tongue. It is therefore evident that, due to lack of understanding of the content, parents cannot participate in the discussions related to child immunisation this hinders effective communication. The interviews (quantitative) revealed that health practitioners felt that much needs to be done when it comes to the dissemination of child immunisation information. They indicate that there is not enough health communication material at their disposal to distribute to parents. Furthermore, there seem to be a challenge in language when they have to communicate with parents. Consequently, the efforts to effectively communicate child immunisation to parents effectively becomes insignificant.
