The concept of action and responsibility in Heidegger's early thought

Pedersen, Christian Hans 01 June 2009 (has links)
In his early thought (which for our purposes will be considered to be roughly the time period from his first post World War I lecture course in 1919 to the publication of Being and Time in 1927), Heidegger offers a rich description of our practical engagement with the world. The aim of this project is to develop a Heideggerian conception of action from these early, concrete descriptions of the practical dimension of human life. The central feature of this Heideggerian conception of action is that action is understood as involving interdependent aspects of passivity and activity (or receptivity and spontaneity, in a more Kantian formulation). Considered in its entirety, my dissertation provides what I take to be a fruitful interpretation of Heidegger's early thought from the standpoint of his understanding of action. It also provides the provisional basis and framework for the further development of a general conception of human agency that can be extended beyond Heidegger's thought.

The Effects of Up-regulated Happiness on Others’ Prosocial Behavior: The Role of Cultural Thinking Style

Hideg, Ivona 13 December 2012 (has links)
Past research has suggested that up-regulating displays of happiness leads to positive social outcomes. In my dissertation research, I suggest that whether the up-regulation of displays of happiness leads to positive outcomes depends on observers’ culture. I developed and tested a model of how one aspect of observers’ culture, analytic-holistic thinking, influences the relation between expressers’ displays of happiness and observers’ prosocial behavior. In two studies, I examined how observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderates the effect of expressers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (regulated through surface acting) and expressers’ authentic displays of happiness (regulated through deep acting) on observers’ prosocial behavior and trust inferences. In a laboratory experiment (Study 1), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of project leaders’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. neutral emotional displays) on observers’ trust in the expresser, but not on observers’ prosocial behavior (time taken to edit a cover letter). In a field fundraising experiment (Study 2), observers’ analytical-holistic thinking moderated the effect of fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness (vs. authentic displays of happiness) on observers’ trust in fundraisers, intentions to volunteer for the charity organization, and monetary donations to the charity organization. Further, observers’ trust in fundraisers mediated the moderating effect of observers’ analytical-holistic thinking on the relation between fundraisers’ inauthentic displays of happiness and observers’ intention to volunteer. Contributions to the literature on the social effects of emotions and to the literature on fundraising and helping as well as practical implications are discussed.

Existential Resistance To Life And Inauthentic Responses In The Plays Of Harold Pinter And Edward Albee

Cavus, Aysel Merve 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis carries out a comparative analysis of Harold Pinter&#039 / s &quot / The Birthday Party&quot / , &quot / The Caretaker&quot / , and &quot / A Slight Ache&quot / and Edward Albee&#039 / s &quot / The Zoo Story&quot / and &quot / A Delicate Balance&quot / . It achieves this by exploring how the dramatic structure, characterization, and use of language in these plays display the playwrights&#039 / tendency to employ similar themes of existentialist philosophy / existential resistance to life and man&#039 / s seld-quest in the face of existential anxiety and despair. Man shows a variety of inauthentic responses in order to escape the lack of meaning in life, freedom to choose and burden of responsibility. The aim of this study is to discuss these inauthentic responses given by the characters in the above mentioned plays. They are classified as active and passive forms and analyzed while the parallelism and differences between these two playwrights&#039 / approaches are explored.

A Study Of Existentialproblems Faced By Kafkaesque And Pinteresque Characters

Yapar, Seda 01 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to discuss the similarities between Kafka&rsquo / s The Trial, &ldquo / The Metamorphosis&rdquo / and &ldquo / The Judgement&rdquo / , and Pinter&rsquo / s plays namely, The Birthday Party, Old Times, Ashes to Ashes and The Dumb Waiter, in terms of their characters&rsquo / problems concerning their existence and their manners of dealing with these issues. The thesis argues that, as a consequence of being thrown into a meaningless world, characters created by Kafka and Pinter have to deal with existential problems like being alienated, having a limited freedom due to their facticity, and being subject to menace, the source of which is beyond their knowledge. It is also discussed that the characters of these writers apply similar methods / such as dominating the others and resorting to inauthentic existence, concerning their manner of dealing with the problems they face. In other words, this study intends to highlight the fact that both Kafka and Pinter reflect the situation of man, looking for a meaningful, secure existence in an absurd world, filled with disillusionment, loss of faith and failure of communication. Fastighetsmäklares kunskapsnivå vid förmedling av oäkta föreningar : En studie om fastighetsmäklares kunskaper om de  konsekvenser oäkta bostadsrättsföreningar medför ur ett  skatterättsligt perspektiv / The Real Estate Agent's Level of Knowledge When Brokering Inauthentic Associations

Bruun, Carolina, Liaghat, Parsa January 2023 (has links)
With today's regulations, real estate agents do not have the obligation to informabout the tax legal consequences that come with acquisition, residence and sale inan inauthentic association. The purpose of this study is to investigate whetherbrokers have knowledge of the consequences of inauthentic associations from a taxlaw perspective and how the information is handled in practice. In addition, the studyaims to investigate whether real estate agents' advice and duty of disclosure shouldinclude tax legal advice in connection with the mediation of a condominium in aninauthentic association. Through structured interviews and semi-structuredinterviews, the study has investigated real estate agents' knowledge of inauthenticassociations and what information they give to speculators when brokering in aninauthentic association. These investigations showed a lack of knowledge in anumber of tax law matters as well as a very varied level of information given inpractice, something that we believe can lead to major financial consequences forboth buyers and sellers. Thus, we make the assessment that real estate agents donot have sufficient knowledge regarding the tax regulations in inauthenticassociations and that it should consequently be an obligation for real estate agentswho have undertaken an assignment in a inauthentic association that they must beable to answer questions of a tax nature in a correct manner, this because it can beconsidered important information for the buyer and the seller. We propose anamendment to the law which states that real estate agents who undertakeassignments in inauthentic associations must have the knowledge required to beable to inform potential buyers about the tax legal consequences that arise.

A case for memory enhancement : ethical, social, legal, and policy implications for enhancing the memory

Muriithi, Paul Mutuanyingi January 2014 (has links)
The desire to enhance and make ourselves better is not a new one and it has continued to intrigue throughout the ages. Individuals have continued to seek ways to improve and enhance their well-being for example through nutrition, physical exercise, education and so on. Crucial to this improvement of their well-being is improving their ability to remember. Hence, people interested in improving their well-being, are often interested in memory as well. The rationale being that memory is crucial to our well-being. The desire to improve one’s memory then is almost certainly as old as the desire to improve one’s well-being. Traditionally, people have used different means in an attempt to enhance their memories: for example in learning through storytelling, studying, and apprenticeship. In remembering through practices like mnemonics, repetition, singing, and drumming. In retaining, storing and consolidating memories through nutrition and stimulants like coffee to help keep awake; and by external aids like notepads and computers. In forgetting through rituals and rites. Recent scientific advances in biotechnology, nanotechnology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and information technologies, present a wide variety of technologies to enhance many different aspects of human functioning. Thus, some commentators have identified human enhancement as central and one of the most fascinating subject in bioethics in the last two decades. Within, this period, most of the commentators have addressed the Ethical, Social, Legal and Policy (ESLP) issues in human enhancements as a whole as opposed to specific enhancements. However, this is problematic and recently various commentators have found this to be deficient and called for a contextualized case-by-case analysis to human enhancements for example genetic enhancement, moral enhancement, and in my case memory enhancement (ME). The rationale being that the reasons for accepting/rejecting a particular enhancement vary depending on the enhancement itself. Given this enormous variation, moral and legal generalizations about all enhancement processes and technologies are unwise and they should instead be evaluated individually. Taking this as a point of departure, this research will focus specifically on making a case for ME and in doing so assessing the ESLP implications arising from ME. My analysis will draw on the already existing literature for and against enhancement, especially in part two of this thesis; but it will be novel in providing a much more in-depth analysis of ME. From this perspective, I will contribute to the ME debate through two reviews that address the question how we enhance the memory, and through four original papers discussed in part three of this thesis, where I examine and evaluate critically specific ESLP issues that arise with the use of ME. In the conclusion, I will amalgamate all my contribution to the ME debate and suggest the future direction for the ME debate.
