The Theory of Community in Being and Time

This thesis seeks to show that there is a substantive theory of community in Martin Heidegger's Being and Time. There is more to this theory of community than is commonly thought. While the importance of the structures of Being-with and authenticity is stressed, I argue that Heidegger's account of historicality from Division II, Chapter 5 is vital for any adequate understanding of the theory of community in this text. In Part 2, the theory of community in Being and Time is compared to that which Heidegger appeals to in his speech "The Self-Assertion of the German University". I argue that the two theories are very similar to one another. Having established this, I offer some criticisms of the theory of community. Heidegger's theory of community is unacceptable to those of us who accept a liberal-pluralist vision of society. The theory of community he gives in Being and Time, by appealing to monolithic notions of "people" (Volk) and "destiny" contradicts the liberal-pluralist vision. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

The Phenomenology Of Nothingness

<p>This thesis attempts to render a comprehensive interpretation of Heidegger's concept of nothingness as it is argued for in Being and Time. This thesis has two main objectives: 1) to reinterpret Heidegger's concept of the anxiety in which Dasein experiences nothingness and to argue against the standard interpretation which states that Dasein experiences anxiety or nothingness when it acknowledges its mortality, and 2) to show that section 40 of <em>Being and Time</em> should be interpreted independently from later sections. The main emphasis of this thesis is to clarify what Heidegger means by nothingness and to criticize those who misinterpret Heidegger. I attempt to provide a more satisfactory account of nothingness and its relation to anxiety and death.</p> <p>In chapter I, merely give an account of Heidegger's concept of inauthenticity, which includes the following concepts: The "they", averageness, distantiality, levelling down, publicness, idle talk, curiosity, ambiguity, and falling and throwness.</p> <p>In chapter II, I discuss anxiety and nothingness. refer to Heidegger's essay entitled "What is Metaphysics?" in order to get a deeper understanding of Heidegger's concept of nothingness. I argue against the standard interpretation and show that nothingness can be experienced without the acknowledgement of one's mortality.</p> <p>In chapter III, I attempt to answer the following question: What does Heidegger mean by death? I outline the arguments of various interpreters of Heidegger's concept of death. They equate nothingness with one's acknowledgement of mortality, i.e., the possibility of one's own death. Those who argue for this position do not understand what Heidegger means by nothingness and its significance to death. I criticize these interpreters and reveal their oversights and misinterpretations, and then put forth my own interpretation of what Heidegger means by death.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

The concept of action and responsibility in Heidegger's early thought

In his early thought (which for our purposes will be considered to be roughly the time period from his first post World War I lecture course in 1919 to the publication of Being and Time in 1927), Heidegger offers a rich description of our practical engagement with the world. The aim of this project is to develop a Heideggerian conception of action from these early, concrete descriptions of the practical dimension of human life. The central feature of this Heideggerian conception of action is that action is understood as involving interdependent aspects of passivity and activity (or receptivity and spontaneity, in a more Kantian formulation). Considered in its entirety, my dissertation provides what I take to be a fruitful interpretation of Heidegger's early thought from the standpoint of his understanding of action. It also provides the provisional basis and framework for the further development of a general conception of human agency that can be extended beyond Heidegger's thought.

In order to reach this goal, some hedeggerian’s existencial analytics key-concepts from the treaty Being and Time were scrutinized, notedly the structures of the Being-in, with emphasis in the Attunement and in Discourse, the Falling Prey, and the Angst. These concepts are articulated by the literary experience of Hermann Hesse’s tale The hard way. As follows, some concepts fundamental to the Daseinanalysis reffered to in the text Seminars of Zollikon are worked upon, exposing in a brief way the Daseinanalysis of Medard Boss. It is shown, then, temporality as of invaluable importance to the comprehension of a “subject” which begins to be understood as language and which escapes the way of explanation of traditional metaphysics, in the hedeggerian’s fundamental ontology as well as in Psychoanalysis. Furthermore, there is an attempt to investigate some of the conceptual criticism directed by Heidegger towards freudian Psychoanalysis, in order to make fruitful the investigation on the proximity and distance between the cited clinic practices around hedeggerian concepts. Some of the central themes of the freudian first Topic will be quickly reviewed giving voice to philosophers who thought psychoanalysis through the lenses of philosophy, such as Ricoeur. Throughout the same dialogue, we’ll give an interpretation of Desire, which is here considered a central psychoanalitic characteristic to unify comparison and critics. Finally, the ethic (not ontological) character of the psychoanalytic clinic will be demonstrated to be what distinguishes it from Heidegger’s philosophical proposal. It all leads to a question: would Daseinanalysis be structured over a fundamental ontology or possess its own ethics? Key elements from the Heidegger-Freud dialogue in Zollikon, as well as the themes of desire and its expression, which envolves the Unconcious, are at last enlightened by an interpretation of the tale A terceira margem do rio, in the intention to expand and deepen psychoanalytical concepts by the literary perspective. / Nesta dissertação, buscaremos esclarecer os conceitos heideggerianos de fala (Rede) e compreensão do si próprio, tais como aparecem e são trabalhados na perspectiva das clínicas psicológicas da Daseinanálise e da Psicanálise. Para chegar ao nosso objetivo, examinamos alguns conceitos-chave da analítica existencial heideggeriana, do tratado Ser e Tempo – notadamente, as estruturas do ser-em, com ênfase na tonalidade afetiva e na fala, a de-cadência e a angústia. Esses conceitos são articulados pela vivência literária do conto O caminho difícil, de Hermann Hesse. Em seguida, trabalharemos alguns conceitos fundamentais para a Daseinanálise referidos no texto Seminários de Zollikon, expondo, ainda que de modo breve, a Daseinanálise de Medard Boss. Mostraremos, então, a temporalidade como de suma importância para a compreensão de um “sujeito” que começa a ser compreendido como linguagem e que escapa aos moldes de explicação da metafísica tradicional, assim na ontologia fundamental heideggeriana como na Psicanálise. Por fim, tentaremos investigar algumas críticas conceituais que Heidegger faz à Psicanálise freudiana, a fim de tornar fecunda a investigação de aproximação e distanciamento das citadas clínicas em torno dos conceitos heideggerianos. Explanaremos, rapidamente, alguns temas centrais da primeira tópica freudiana, dando voz a filósofos que pensaram a psicanálise pelo viés da filosofia, como Ricoeur. No mesmo diálogo, tentaremos desdobrar a característica psicanalítica que julgamos central para unificar a comparação e a crítica, a saber, a interpretação do desejo. Por fim, mostramos a configuração da clínica psicanalítica em seu caráter ético (e não ontológico) o que realmente a diferencia da proposta filosófica de Heidegger. Isso nos leva a questionar: a Daseinanálise estaria estruturada em uma ontologia fundamental ou possui uma ética própria? Elementos centrais sobre o diálogo Heidegger-Freud, em Zollikon, bem como os temas do desejo e sua expressão, que envolve o Inconsciente, são, por fim, iluminados por uma interpretação do conto A terceira margem do rio, na intenção de expandir e aprofundar conceitos psicanalíticos pela perspectiva literária.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present work aims at to rebuild the concept of significance , as it was presented in Being and Time of Martin Heidegger. Therefore, the concept should be characterized as formal structure of the worldhood of the world and, besides, while the foundation of the possibility of the word and, consequently, of the language. For that, we opted to treat the theme in three stages. In the first stage, we will look for to elaborate a brief presentation of the ontological project of Being and Time. This first chapter intends to place the theme of significance for inside of the heideggerian ontological project. Starting from the presentation of the heideggerian ontological project, the second stage has in mind the reconstruction of the significance while the formal structure of the Worldhood of the world. In that case, the second chapter will be centered in the analysis of the existential structure of the world, aiming at to expose the original constitution of the ontological structure of the world. While the third chapter aims at to characterize the significance as foundation of the possibility of the word and of the language. For that, this last stage will look for to explain the genesis of the language that is found in the ontological treaty Being and Time. / O presente trabalho objetiva reconstruir o conceito de significatividade , conforme foi apresentado em Ser e Tempo de Martin Heidegger. Tal conceito deverá ser, portanto, caracterizado como estrutura formal da mundaneidade do mundo e, ademais, enquanto o fundamento da possibilidade da palavra e, por conseguinte, da linguagem. Para tanto, optamos por tratar o tema em três etapas. Na primeira etapa, buscaremos elaborar uma breve apresentação do projeto ontológico de Ser e Tempo. Esse primeiro capítulo pretende situar o tema da significatividade no interior do projeto ontológico heideggeriano. A partir da apresentação do projeto ontológico heideggeriano, a segunda etapa tem em vista a reconstrução da significatividade enquanto estrutura formal da mundaneidade do mundo. Assim, o segundo capítulo centrar-se-á na análise da estrutura existencial do mundo, visando expor a constituição originária da estrutura ontológica do mundo. Por sua vez, o terceiro capítulo objetiva caracterizar a significatividade como fundamento da possibilidade da palavra e da linguagem. Para isso, esta última etapa buscará esclarecer a gênese da linguagem, tal como essa gênese foi exposta no tratado ontológico Ser e Tempo.

Divine Temporality: Bonhoeffer's Theological Appropriation of Heidegger's Existential Analytic of Dasein

This dissertation’s guiding question is: What was the impact of Martin Heidegger’s early philosophy on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theology? I argue that Heidegger’s analysis of Dasein, his technical term for human existence, provides Bonhoeffer with important conceptual tools for developing his Christology, from which the rest of his theology follows. Part of recognizing Heidegger’s importance to Bonhoeffer involves understanding the latter’s critiques of previous notable philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Husserl, and Scheler. As Bonhoeffer evaluates these philosophers, they lead to theologically unacceptable positions. Heidegger, in contrast, has come to a theologically profitable understanding of human existence and epistemology. Though there are theologically useful elements in Heidegger’s philosophy, there are elements that require significant alteration, and even rejection. Heidegger recognizes that epistemology must be based on actual human existence, and he can account for the historical continuity of human existence; however, because of Heidegger’s anthropocentric philosophy, he cannot account for God’s transcendence necessary for proper theology. Bonhoeffer then applies the conceptual tools he has appropriated from Heidegger to revelation, Christology, and the church. This eliminates the anthropocentrism that made transcendence impossible, while maintaining the benefits of Heidegger’s philosophy in order to account for Christian existence. Understanding Bonhoeffer’s appropriation of Heidegger is additionally important for understanding Heidegger’s potential relation to theology. This dissertation concludes by placing Bonhoeffer in the context of other theological appropriations of Heidegger. In light of this context and Heidegger’s own understanding of philosophy’s relation to theology, I argue that Bonhoeffer represents one, viable theological use of Heidegger.

[pt] Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender o papel privilegiado da angústia na existência a partira da obra ser e tempo da Martin Heidegger. O foco deste estudo esta justamente no privilégio deste papel para aquele que pode se angustiar, ou seja, o ser-aí humano. Tal prerrogativaestá apoiada na possibilidade de uam transformação existencial. Uma vez que a angústia suspende as determinações a partir das quais nós somos e estamos. Esta suspensão abre espaço para que outors modos de ser aconteçam, ou seja, para que outra relação com o espaço existencial possa surgir. Em meio ao automatismo cotidiano pouco espaço se dá para que algo diverso apareça. Na verdade pouco espaço se dá para o próprio espaço no qual a existência se constitui. Esta abertura faz surgir justamente quando nós angustiamos. Isso significa que a angústia traz um espaço, mas não garante que algo diverso surja daí, e modo que, o automatismo sempre pode ser retomado. O papel privilegiado almejado nesta pesquisa dá margem para pensarmos a possibilidade de duas vozes de angústia: a primeira esta relacionada a essa quebra de automatismos, e a segunda apronta para uma prontidão ao angustiar-se. É exatmente a partir da escuta destas das vozes que ocorre uma trasnformação existencial, ou seja, uma apreensão e transparência com relação aos modos de ser mais própios. / [en] This research aims to comprehend the privileged role of angst in the existential analytics based on Martin Heidegger’s work Being and Time. The focus of this study lies precisely on the privilege of this role for those who can be anguished, ie, the human Dasein. This prerogative is supported by the possibility of an existential transformation. Once the anguish suspends determinations that we are. This suspension makes room/space for other ways of being, which means that another relation with the existential space may arise. In the average everydayness there is a narrow space for something different appears. In fact, in this quotidian way of being a narrow space is given to the space where the existence itself is constituted. This disclosure will come just when we are anguished. This means that the angst brings a space, but does not guarantee that something different can emerge from there, which means that automatism can always be retaken. The privileged role pursued in this research raises from the possibility of two anguish’s voices: the first one is related to break of the automatism, while the second one points to an acceptance of angst as an existential possibility. It is just when this two voices are listened that can occurs an existential transformation, which means an apprehension and a transparency related to our authentic way of being.
