Using ship tracks to characterize the effects of haze on cloud properties

1-km MODIS observations of ship tracks off the west coast of the U.S. are used to characterize changes in cloud visible optical depths, cloud droplet radii, cloud cover fraction, and column cloud liquid water amount as low-level marine clouds respond to particle pollution from underlying ships. This study re-examines the finding of earlier studies based on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) observations showing that when restricted to pixels overcast by low-level, single-layered cloud systems, the polluted clouds in the ship tracks had on average ~20% less liquid water than the nearby uncontaminated clouds. This study uses Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations from the Terra and Aqua satellites and takes advantage of the 1.6 and 2.1-µm channels in addition to the 3.7-µm channel available on AVHRR to derive droplet effective radii. The additional channels allow for different and presumably more comprehensive analyses of the cloud properties. In addition, this study uses a retrieval scheme that accounts for the effects of partial cloudiness within the 1-km pixels on the retrieved cloud properties. An improved automated track finding scheme that allows for the selection of unpolluted clouds to be closer to the clouds identified as being polluted is also employed in this study. When restricted to overcast pixels, as was done in earlier studies, results from the Terra and Aqua MODIS observations indicate that cloud droplet effective radii are significantly smaller and cloud optical depths significantly larger for polluted pixels than for unpolluted pixels. Cloud top height does not change when clouds become polluted but cloud liquid water path decreases slightly but significantly. The decrease in cloud liquid water obtained with the MODIS observations was at most ~10%, much less than the 20% obtained with the AVHRR observations. This decrease, however, depended on the wavelength used to derive the droplet effective radii. More specifically, classified as behavioural science, it combines two theoretical models, namely the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and the Expectancy Disconfirmation Theory. A wider view of behavioural science incorporates other social actors (e.g., end users) and organisational actors (e.g., executives). Focussing on the factors influencing the individual's behavioural intent, it was found that the compatibility of systems development methodologies to the developer's pre-existing software development style is vital. Furthermore, performance expectancy, self-efficacy, organisational culture, policies, customer influence, voluntariness and facilitating conditions, all directly influenced the use of systems development methodologies, with policies and customer influence playing a significant role, especially in relation to health information systems. No significant direct effects or indirect effects could be established for the factors effort expectancy, personal innovativeness and social influence. It appears that individuals working in the health care software development discipline are more autonomous, less influenced by others. Also, the lack of support for the factor effort expectancy may indicate that systems development methodologies have entered a mature state, with less concern on the effort required for use. Furthermore, with regard to effectiveness and the continued use of information systems methodologies, satisfaction had a significant direct effect, with confirmation having a significant indirect effect. This master’s final thesis is purposive to analyze the doctrine of direct effect of Community law, which is enlarged in the practice of the European Court of Justice. There are discussed the stages of the formation of the current doctrine identifying the concrete premises, which have been determined the enlargement of the principle of direct effect on the various sorts of forms of Community law. The main attention goes to the question of the direct effect of directives verifying the correctness of the position of the European Court of Justice not to recognize the horizontal direct effect of directives.In other hand, it is strived to verify the whole doctrine of direct effect in order to check the ability to use even the principle of supremacy of the Community law discussing the question of the collision between national and Community law.

Minkastares indirekta stridseffekt : En analys av minkastarsystems påverkan på taktiska scenarier

I dagsläget saknas till stor del publikationer avseende minkastare och framför allt minvapnets indirekta stridseffekter, vilket denna rapport syftar till att undersöka. I rapporten skapas ett antal simplifierade taktiska scenarier där metoden för utläggning av minor varierar för att simulera vilken direkt stridseffekt mineringarna får. En hypotes angående vilken stridseffekt som skulle uppstå skapas innan simuleringarna, och används för att genomföra en spelteoretisk analys på de beslut våra egna förband och motståndaren kan ta. Utifrån den spelteoretiska analysen kan slutsatser dras kring de indirekta stridseffekter som minkastare kan tänkas bidra med i verkligheten, såsom att binda motståndarens minbrytningsresurser, höja den egna beredskapen till att minera snabbt, och att minska motståndarens reaktions- och omplaneringstid vid sammanstöt med minering.  Minkastare bidrar enligt rapporten inte med bättre direkta stridseffekter än manuellt utlagda mineringar då vi har god tid för förberedelser. Dock bedöms minkastare kunna bidra med en förmågehöjning inom Försvarsmakten då vi exempelvis har ont om förberedelsetid eller behöver en hög flexibilitet i var minering ska ske, och kan komplettera dagens metoder för minering väl. Arbetet belyser också de begränsningar som dagens tillgängliga simuleringsmjukvara har, och bidrog till Totalförsvarets forskningsinstituts vidareutveckling av mjukvaran för att bättre kunna simulera mineringars effekter i framtiden. / Today there is largely a lack of publications regarding mine dispensers and the indirect effects of mines, which this report aims to investigate. In the report several simplified tactical scenarios are created, where the method of mine laying varies to simulate which combat effectiveness the minefields create. A hypothesis about the combat effectiveness is made before the simulations and is used in a game theoretical analysis of our own and the opponent’s choices in the scenarios. From the game theoretical analysis the report is able to conclude which indirect effects a mine dispenser could have in practice, such as binding the opponent’s minefield breaching resources, improving our readiness to mine quickly, and to lower the opponent’s reaction- and replanning time when met with a minefield. According to the report, mine dispensers do not provide better combat effectiveness than manually placed mines when we have lots of time for preparations. Mine dispensers can however provide a raise in ability when we for example have little time for preparations or when we need to maintain a high flexibility in where to mine, and could well complement today’s methods for mine laying. The report also illuminates the limitations of the simulation software available today, and contributed to the Swedish Defence Research Agency’s further development of the software to better simulate the effects of minefields in the future.

The Influence of Anthropogenic Development of Water on Coyotes and Kit Foxes in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts

Anthropogenic provisioning of water (water developments) to enhance abundance and distribution of wildlife is a common management practice in arid regions where water is limiting. Despite the long-term and widespread use of water developments, little is known about how they influence distribution, competition dynamics, and behavior of native species. To elucidate the potential influences of water developments on native species, we tested hypotheses concerning the occurrence and behavior of native kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis). First, we tested the indirect effect of water hypothesis (IEWH) which proposes that water developments negatively affect the arid-adapted kit fox by enabling a water-dependent competitor (i.e., coyote; Canis latrans) to expand distribution in arid landscapes. We tested the two predictions of the IEWH (i.e., coyotes will visit areas with water more frequently and kit foxes will avoid coyotes) and evaluated relative use of water by canids in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts from 2010 to 2012. We established scent stations in areas with (wet) and without (dry) water and monitored visitation by canids to scent stations and water sources using infrared-triggered cameras. There was no difference in the proportions of visits to scent stations in wet or dry areas by coyotes or kit foxes at either study area. There was no correlation between visits to scent stations by coyotes and kit foxes. Visitation to water sources was not different for coyotes between study areas, but kit foxes visited water sources more in Mojave than Great Basin. The intense visitation to water by kit foxes in Mojave challenges our understanding that this species does not readily drink water. Our results did not support the IEWH in the Great Basin or Mojave Deserts for these two canids. Second, we tested three hypotheses that have been proposed to explain spatial variation in vigilance behavior. The predator-vigilance hypothesis (PVH) proposes that prey increase vigilance where there is evidence of predators. The visibility-vigilance hypothesis (VVH) suggests that prey increase vigilance where detection of predators is impeded or visibility is obstructed. The refuge-vigilance hypothesis (RVH) proposes that prey may perceive areas with low visibility (greater cover) as refuges and decrease vigilance. We evaluated support for these hypotheses using the kit fox, a solitary carnivore subject to intraguild predation, as a model. From 2010 to 2012, we used infrared-triggered cameras to record video of kit fox behavior at water developments in the Mojave Desert. The RVH explained more variation in vigilance behavior of kit foxes than the other two hypotheses (AICc model weight = 0.37). Kit foxes were less vigilant at water developments with low overhead cover (refuge) obstructing visibility. Based on our results, the PVH and VVH may not be applicable to all species of prey. Solitary prey, unlike gregarious prey, may use areas with concealing cover to maximize resource acquisition and minimize vigilance.

Les communautés écologiques sont connues pour être des systèmes complexes composés de multiple espèces entrant en interaction les unes avec les autres. De nombreux modèles théoriques ont été développés pour étudier les communautés. Certains ont souligné l'importance des effets indirects que les espèces pouvaient avoir les unes sur les autres, tels que les chaînes d'interactions et les modifications d'interactions (par modification du trait d'une des espèces en interaction ou de l'environnement où se déroule l'interaction). Bien que la science expérimentale vienne confirmer le rôle fondamental que pourrait avoir ces effets indirects, peu d'études à l'échelle des communautés en milieu naturel ont été conduites, et encore moins chez les grands mammifères. Le Parc National de Hwange, au Zimbabwe, est un écosystème de savane arborée semiaride caractérisé par une quasi-absence d'eau de surface naturelle (point d'eau, rivière) pendant la saison sèche, et ce n'est qu'avec la création de points d'eau artificiels pompés que la richesse spécifique des communautés de grands mammifères et les fortes abondances animales sont maintenues. De plus, cet écosystème a la remarquable particularité à la fois d'abriter l'une des plus fortes densités d'éléphants, et d'être considéré comme l'un des bastions africains pour sa population de lions. Le lion est connu comme étant un chasseur à l'affût, utilisant les éléments de son habitat (fourrés, souches, hautes herbes, etc.) pour se rapprocher au maximum de sa proie et lui bondir dessus par surprise. De plus, cette espèce semble profiter de l'agrégation des herbivores aux points d'eau pendant la saison sèche pour chasser autour de ces points d'eau. L'éléphant d'Afrique quant à lui est capable d'aménager son milieu et est ainsi susceptible de favoriser l'accès à certaines ressources pour les autres espèces, telles que des abris ou au contraire une meilleure visibilité. En revanche, de par sa masse corporelle exceptionnelle et son régime alimentaire généraliste, il est possible qu'il soit un compétiteur clé pour les autres herbivores. Enfin, étant très nombreux dans l'écosystème étudié, nécessitant de grandes quantités d'eau, et devenant de plus en plus agressifs au fil de la saison sèche, les éléphants influencent l'utilisation des points d'eau par les autres herbivores. Cette thèse porte donc sur le rôle que peuvent avoir les éléphants sur les interactions trophiques entre les lions et leurs proies, via des mécanismes d'effets indirects. Différents axes de recherche sont abordés. Le premier porte sur l'effet des éléphants sur la communauté de grands herbivores aux points d'eau, et plus particulièrement comment ils peuvent influencer leur distribution spatiale, et à terme leur vulnérabilité vis-à-vis des prédateurs. Un évitement spatial des éléphants par les autres herbviores en début de saison sèche suggère fortement que les éléphants sont de potentiels compétiteurs. Cependant, à la fin de la saison sèche, le phénomène s'inverse et certaines espèces d'herbivores se rapprochent fortement des éléphants. Deux scénarios portant sur les mécanismes pouvant expliquer ce patron ont été explorés, sans succès : une nécessité croissante d'accéder à de l'eau de meilleure qualité au niveau des pompes des points d'eau, et une augmentation du risque de prédation qui pourrait rendre les éléphants « attractifs » aux yeux des herbivores, les éléphants adultes étant invulnérables à la prédation et capables de les faire fuir par des comportements de harcèlement. Le deuxième axe de recherche porte sur l'effet des éléphants sur la distribution spatiale des herbivores à l'échelles du paysage et de l'habitat, et sur les conséquences possibles que cela peut avoir sur l'écologie spatiale des prédateurs. L'absence de ségrégation entre éléphants et herbivores ne supporte pas l'hypothèse d'un effet de compétition par exploitation, et l'investigation quant à l'effet sur les prédateurs n'a pas été poussée plus avant... [etc] / Species can indirectly affect other species and their interactions. The trophic interaction between a predator and its prey can be modified by the presence of a third species either through chain interactions (e.g. successive predation link) either through interaction modification. However, these indirect received few attentions in theorical modelling of food web, and fewer studies tried to explore this phenomenon at the scale of natural complex communities of large mammals. The role of the elephants as modifier of lion’s trophic interaction is explored in the semi-arid woodland savannah ecosystem of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. African elephants, as key competitor (male body mass ~ 4000 kg with aggressive behaviour) shape the behaviour of herbivores at waterholes results do not allow to state on the elephant mediation of lion trophic interaction at waterholes. In addition, elephants seem to facilitate the availability of food resources for impalas, possibly by increasing regrowth of shoots by breaking twigs and stem, as these last select habitats used by elephants. However, not effect of facilitation or competition were observed for the other herbivores, which lead to think that elephants do not influence lion trophic interaction in that way. Finally, by altering the physical environment (i.e. engineer species) the elephants affect the visibility and ambush sites for lions in the woody vegetation and ultimately seem to influence the lion kill site selection. This study suggests that indirect effects may act at the community level even if their observation and quantification are difficult in natural communities. Moreover, it supports the observation that it is important to take into account these indirect effects in order to have a thorough understanding and have a better ability to predict the consequences that disruptions may have on the structure and functioning of communities

Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde eine neuartige Lidartechnik in ein leistungsstarkes Lidar-System implementiert. Mit Hilfe des realisierten Aufbaus wurden Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen in Flüssigwasserwolken über Leipzig untersucht. Die angewandte Messmethode beruht auf der Detektion von Licht, das an Wolkentröpfchen mehrfach in Vorwärtsrichtung gestreut und an Stickstoffmolekülen inelastisch zurückgestreut wurde. Dabei werden zwei Gesichtsfelder unterschiedlicher Größe verwendet. Ein Vorwärtsiterations-Algorithmus nutzt die gewonnenen Informationen zur Ermittlung von Profilen wolkenmikrophysikalischer Eigenschaften. Es können der Extinktionskoeffizient, der effektive Tröpfchenradius, der Flüssigwassergehalt sowie die Tröpfchenanzahlkonzentration bestimmt werden. Weiterhin wird die exakte Erfassung der Wolkenunterkantenhöhe durchdie eingesetzte Messtechnik ermöglicht. Darüber hinaus ist die Bestimmung von Aerosoleigenschaften mit dem eingesetzten Lidargerät möglich. Die Qualität des realisierten Messaufbaus wurde geprüft und eine Fehleranalyse durchgeführt. Unter anderem wurde der aus einer Wolkenmessung bestimmte Flüssigwassergehalt mit einem Mikrowellen-Radiometer bestätigt. Anhand von Fallbeispielen konnte das Potential dieser Messtechnik demonstriert werden. Die Bedeutung von Profilinformationen von Wolkeneigenschaften für die Untersuchung von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen wurde gezeigt. Weiterhin wurde mit Hilfe eines Doppler-Windlidars der Einfluss der Vertikalwindgeschwindigkeit auf Wolkeneigenschaften und damit Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen verdeutlicht. Neunundzwanzig Wolkenmessungen wurden für eine statistische Auswertung bezüglich Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen genutzt. Dabei konnte erstmalig die Abhängigkeit von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen von der Wolkeneindringtiefe untersucht werden. Es wurde festgestellt, dass diese auf die untersten 70m von Wolken beschränkt sind. Weiterhin wurden deutlich stärkere Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen in Wolkengebieten festgestellt, die von Aufwinden dominiert werden. Für der Quantifizierung der Stärke von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen wurden ACIN-Werte genutzt, welche den Zusammenhang zwischen der Tröpfchenanzahlkonzentration und dem Aerosol-Extinktionskoeffizienten beschreiben. Dabei wurde zwischen der Untersuchung der entsprechenden mikrophysikalischen Prozesse und deren Bedeutung für die Wolkenalbedo und damit dem Strahlungsantrieb der Wolken unterschieden. Für die erstgenannte Zielstellung wurde ein ACIN-Wert von 0.80 +/- 0.40 ermittelt, für Letztere 0.13 +/- 0.07.

Contributions of oral language and word-level literacy skills to elementary writing in first and second language learners

Second language (L2) learners are a growing population in Canadian school systems, and acquisition of literacy skills is critical to their success in Canadian society. While much research has been devoted to writing development in first language (L1) learners, text-level writing remains relatively underexplored in L2 populations. The present study sought to address this gap by considering the relative contributions of component oral language and word-level literacy skills to writing in elementary students speaking English as a first (EL1) or second (EL2) language. A sample of 124 kindergarten students (56 EL1, 68 EL2) and 112 grade three students (51 EL1, 61 EL2) completed a battery of standardized measures assessing oral language, word-level literacy, and writing skills. An ordinary least squares (OLS) regression-based mediation path analysis was used to test associations among oral language, word-level literacy, and writing skills in each group. Results indicated that word-level literacy skills had a significant direct effect on writing in all groups, but that oral language had no significant direct effect on writing in any groups. Instead, the effect of oral language on writing was significantly mediated by word-level skills in the kindergarten EL1 and EL2 groups, and the grade three EL1 group. The indirect effect of oral language on writing through word-level skills was not significant in the grade three EL2 group. Despite this, no significant differences in variable associations were found between EL1 and EL2 groups in either grade. Oral language skills were additionally found to have a significant effect on word-level literacy skills in the kindergarten EL1 and EL2 groups and the grade three EL1 group; the significance of this effect in the grade three EL2 group was unclear. Results of this study are discussed in relation to existing literature, and existing theories of L1 and L2 writing. / Graduate

Die Bedeutung von Profilinformationen von Wolkeneigenschaften für die Untersuchung von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen wurde gezeigt. Weiterhin wurde mit Hilfe eines Doppler-Windlidars der Einfluss der Vertikalwindgeschwindigkeit auf Wolkeneigenschaften und damit Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen verdeutlicht. Neunundzwanzig Wolkenmessungen wurden für eine statistische Auswertung bezüglich Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen genutzt. Dabei konnte erstmalig die Abhängigkeit von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen von der Wolkeneindringtiefe untersucht werden. Es wurde festgestellt, dass diese auf die untersten 70m von Wolken beschränkt sind. Weiterhin wurden deutlich stärkere Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen in Wolkengebieten festgestellt, die von Aufwinden dominiert werden. Für der Quantifizierung der Stärke von Aerosol-Wolken-Wechselwirkungen wurden ACIN-Werte genutzt, welche den Zusammenhang zwischen der Tröpfchenanzahlkonzentration und dem Aerosol-Extinktionskoeffizienten beschreiben. Dabei wurde zwischen der Untersuchung der entsprechenden mikrophysikalischen Prozesse und deren Bedeutung für die Wolkenalbedo und damit dem Strahlungsantrieb der Wolken unterschieden. Für die erstgenannte Zielstellung wurde ein ACIN-Wert von 0.80 +/- 0.40 ermittelt, für Letztere 0.13 +/- 0.07.
