Investigation of fuel and water injection in gas turbine combustion : Evaluate the methodologies available in Star CCM+ for modeling of water injection in simplified combustor using liquid and gas fuelsShinwari, Sanger January 2023 (has links)
The negative impact of gas turbine emissions on the environment and human health is a growing concern. Recent studies suggest injecting water into the combustion process effectively reduces emissions and increases power output. However, this approach presents new challenges that need to be thoroughly investigated. Siemens Energy (SE) has recently conducted a study on water injection and its effects on gaseous combustion mixtures but encountere challenges the simulation results when adding water. Therefore, the primary objective of this thesis is to evaluate the methodologies available in Star CCM+ for modeling water injection in a simplified combustor model (SCM) using both liquid (diesel) and gas (methane) fuels. In addition, the behavior of the flame, temperature field inside the combustor, and burner outlet temperature, are investigated. The study has compared physical phenomena such as, the flame shape, velocity, and vorticity field of SCMs with the complete combustor model of the SGT-800 gas turbine for gas fuel. Additionally, the thesis has examined the capability of STAR CCM+ for predicting flame temperature at the outlet against in-house calculation data and Cantera software for parametric cases. The methodology involves a parametric study using the Realizable k-ε TwoLayer turbulence model for steady-state RANS simulations. Combustion is modeled using the FGM method, while Lagrangian multiphase approach is used for liquid injection. The employed FGM combustion model, Lagrangian multiphase model, and RANS simulations yielded realistic results. In addition, the convergence of gas fuel cases was smoother compared to liquid fuel cases, which involved multiphase modelling and evaporation, makes it more complex. The physical phenomena were captured by CFD simulations for the SCM. Flame shape, velocity and vorticity field have good agreement with the theory in the field of gas turbine combustion and other literature sources. Disagreements between CFD and in-house calculations were observed, with the greatest differences being 24 ℃ for premixed methane (at WFR (Water Fuel Ratio) of 0) and 28 ℃ for non-premixed diesel (at WFR of 1). On the other hand, Cantera results for Vapor and for methane cases with water addition were in limit of 10 ℃ with CFD results for WFR between 0-0.5. Nevertheless, achieving a simulation accuracy within a 10 ℃ limit proved challenging due to limitations and potential sources of error in the in-house calculation sheet, combustion modelling, RANS simulations, and reaction mechanism.

Influence of Oxygen Partial Pressure on the Droplet Shape of Stainless Steel Using Levitated Droplet MethodHessling, Oscar January 2016 (has links)
An induction setup for levitation studies of molten metals was built. The setup was used to levitate and heat stainless steel samples of 2.00 g to 1600 °C and subject them to different atmospheres. Changes in shape and temperature were recorded by video and infrared thermocouple. Oxide films forming on the droplets during levitation were observed. It was possible to notice an immediate surface reaction when the reaction gas was introduced. This reaction is concluded to influence the surface and bulk composition, and therefore have an effect on the shape evolution of the droplet. A more oxidizing atmosphere resulted in a more conical droplet shape; this is thought to be an effect of lowered surface tension and the conically shaped volumetric force caused by the magnetic field. Changes in temperature after the sample is molten are thought to be an effect of changes in emissivity, caused by surface oxidization. Post mortem analysis show a difference in surface morphology for samples subjected to different gases, as well as a difference in amount of oxidization.

Fibre-reinforced ceramic matrix composite materials are characterized by excellent thermal, mechanical and chemical properties. Their high tolerance regarding damaging is a result of the intrinsic fibre structure and porosity. Due to this fact, they offer outstanding dampening characteristics, as is the case for polymeric materials. The production of complex structures is very time consuming and expensive. The integration of simple geometric ceramic composite materials in complex polymeric structures is regarded as a new approach for the production of these materials. These easy-to-produce hybrid ceramic/polymer compound materials combine the advantages of ceramics and polymers in one material system. However, one main disadvantage of these materials is the mutual adhesion of the two components. This article deals with the challenge of the manipulation of the mechanical properties of the C/C composites depending on the intrinsic porosity. This is realized by altering the physical and chemical wetting/coating conditions of the matrix precursor. In addition, the inherent porosity is supposed to increase the effective outer surface and specifically improve the adhesion. For this purpose, a novel carbon precursor with an adjustable open porosity is developed and investigated further. During this different versions of the CFRP and various C/C materials of different production steps are produced and examined. The variation of the precursors is supposed to take place in the polymeric state. The different C/C composites are subsequently thermally bonded with selected polymers and defined consolidation parameters. The mutual joining and connection behaviour is investigated further.

Resistência mecânica e desajuste marginal do titânio comercialmente puro submetido a dois métodos de soldagem: TIG e Laser / Mechanic resistance and marginal misfit of pure Ti submitted to two welding methods TIG and LaserAtoui, Juliana Abdallah 05 December 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of TIG welding (tungsten inert gas) and compare it with Laser welding, of the cylindrical rods and implant-supported frameworks, obtained by in commercially pure titanium (cp) through the mechanical resistance (tensile and flexural strength) and misfit marginal, respectively. Ninety specimens have been fabricated titanium cp, and sixty, cylindrical rods, obtained by casting of the brass rods, and thirty implant-supported frameworks, obtained by plaster die with four similar - Microunit implants (Connection), with ten repetitions for each group (control, TIG welding, laser welding). The specimens were invested in Rematitan Plus, according to the manufacturer instructions. The rings were subjected to thermal cycling and positioned in the machine of casting (Rematitan) under voltaic arc, vacuum and atmosphere of argon, with injection of titanium vacuumpressure. After cooling, were manually and airbone-particle abraded with aluminum oxide. The specimes cylindrical rods were randomly distributed in three groups, for tests, tensile and flexural strength: the control group (without welding), TIG welding and soldering laser. The above thirty-structures were randomly divided into three groups: I- one-piece-cast (control)-, II-B-after-TIG welding and III-B-after-Laser welding, the Group II-A, III-A, consisted of specimens before the process of welding: II-A-before-TIG welding and III-A before-Laser welding. The results for the test Traction were submitted to variance analysis ANOVA (p < 0.05) being observed difference between groups. The supplementary Tukey test (p = 0.05) showed that there was a difference between the control group (605.84 ± 19.83) and the methods of welding TIG (514.90 ± 37.76) and laser (515.85 ± 62.07). To test the Flexion nonparametric test Kruskal-Wallis showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the processes of TIG welding (1559.66) and Laser (1621.64), but the difference was significant between these groups and control (1908.75). For analysis of the results of marginal misfit implant-supported frameworks, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between groups after-TIG welding (250) and after- Laser welding (241), however, the control group (770) showed the largest misfit. With these and the limitations of this study TIG welding in may be to Laser welding.

The lack of passive adaptation in prosthesis over implant can overload implants, prosthetics components and bone tissue, leading to marginal bone loss and even osseointegration. Weldering is used frequently to improve the settlement of metal structures of prosthetic in general and prosthesis over implants. In addition, the settlement precision of the workpiece may be related to the care in the technique of manufacturing the same. The objective of this study was to evaluate, through optical and confocal Laser microscopy, the marginal adaptation of metal bars Branemark protocol type alloy nickel-chromium (NiCr) monoblock and welded, made from conventional waxing .For this, a master model was made to simulate four implants were adapted over which transferents and analogs that served to transfer the position of the implants for the cast model. Waxing obtained by the conventional method were cast in one-piece and separate parts (sectioned), the latter being subsequently welded using the conventional techniques blowtorch and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas). The bar adjustment of readings in each implant were made in monoblock pieces (n = 5) and the severed pieces (n = 10) before and after different weldering techniques. By optical microscopy measurement method, measurements were performed in two predetermined regions (Vestibular and lingual), with three replications, totaling 6 readings per implant. However in the methodology of Confocal laser microscope, was done only on Vestibular. To compare the data obtained on the misfit between prosthetic/implant component, considering the pieces monoblock, the welded parts, the weldering techniques (torch and TIG), measurement methods and the position of the implants, tests were performed statistical where for each of the analyzes determined the application of Normality Test (Shapiro-Wilk test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (alpha = 5%)) to determine the distribution of the sample. For the sample of normal distribution was determined using the parametric test, analysis of variance, while the sample with non-normal distribution was determined using the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test. The results found were statistically significant for method and technique comparison, suggesting that the monoblock parts showed higher misfit than welded parts, and the parts welded by conventional technique showed no statistical difference in relation welded by TIG technique. Regarding the comparison of measurement methods, there was no statistically significant difference, where the Laser Confocal microscopy obtained the greatest misfit. The technical interaction and method there were no statistical differences. When comparing different sections and welded to the two measurement methods, in relation to Section factor, there was no significant difference where 3 sections have the lowest results and welded had equality with 1 section. The technical factor was no statistically significant difference, the conventional technique had the highest averages. The interaction and Technical Section had no significant effect. The marginal adaptation of the play in relation to the implant in the arch position, there was no statistical difference for both methods. There was a difference only in the technical factor, by optical microscopy, where Monoblock had the greatest results and Conventional Welding and TIG, had equality in results. The research of making the prosthesis structures systems and weldering techniques is important in the search for production of prosthetic tooth or on precisely implant the marginal adjustment that can be verified visually and numerically using technological resources to ensure clinical use of prosthetic pieces.

Kierkegaard och sociologins blinda fläck / Kierkegaard and the blind spot of sociologyRoumbanis, Lambros January 2010 (has links)
The overall aim of this dissertation is to discuss the scope as well as the limits of sociological theory. This project is undertaken with the help of Søren Kierkegaard and his unique interpretation of human existence. Taking as its point of departure the existential reality of the single individual (den Enkelte), this study also addresses the fundamental question posed by Georg Simmel, “How is society possible?” It is argued that an answer to this question needs to take into account the existential concepts of choice, authenticity, subjectivity, anxiety, faith, and responsibility. The strategy – and the implicit method – of this study is to start out from the single individual and gradually move towards society, culture and history. After addressing some theories of everyday life, such as social phenomenology and dramaturgical theory, the investigation moves on to the central sociological problem of how to construct a synthetic theory of the relation between man and society. The final theory to be discussed is the social theory of Jean-Paul Sartre, which can be seen as a reformulation and modification of the Kierkegaardian perspective, now set in dialectical relation to society and history. The main argument of the thesis is that the message that can be found in Kierkegaard’s writings represents both a reminder and a challenge to every sociological project which seeks to achieve a synthesis between individual existence and social reality. Sociological theories can neither account for the existence of the single individual in an exhaustive manner, nor fully integrate this existence into some social system. It is impossible to reduce the existence of individuals to some socially and culturally given lifeworld, because authentic faith and infinite passion constitute an inner experience that is largely hidden from the sociologist observer. A sociological incompleteness theorem is proposed, which states that sociological theories are simply incapable of dealing with certain aspects of human existence. These aspects are, from an ontological point of view, unsettled and not social in nature. This theorem can also be expressed so that there exists a blind spot in every sociological theory that tries to account systematically for the single individual. By focussing attention on the existential tension between choice and inner experience, the sociologist can however push the limits for what can be accomplished with the help of sociological theory.
