Internet use among university students in Kenya : a case study of the University of Nairobi

The researcher investigated internet usage among students at the University of Nairobi using a quantitative case study method. A questionnaire-based survey was done among 381 students and face-to-face interviews were conducted with the university‟s library staff. The research findings indicate that the students' level of awareness about the internet services offered at the university was high. The students had good basic computer and internet skills; however, they lacked more advanced skills and this negatively affected their use of internet resources. The students used the internet for various purposes, including to study, teach and do research; to communicate; and for social interaction. The major recommendations of the study include providing formal internet training and adequate facilities; implementing a better, inclusive policy on internet use; and better co-ordinated university efforts. LGBT+ and Public Libraries Hana Bouchalová English Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to define the relations of the Czech LGBT+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* with respect to other gender identities and sexual orientations) and Czech public libraries. Focusing on LGBT+ literature and library and information services, the thesis offers both library and LGBT+ community perspective, using following research methods: questionnaires and interviews (executed with the help of LGBT+ groups and organisations), interviews with librarians, mystery shopping and analysis of selected Czech public library collections. Theoretical chapters discussing the existence of Czech queer libraries and the situation of LGBT+ community in the Czech Republic and elsewhere are also included. Final chapter contains suggestions for libraries how to better design and improve their services and offers related topics for further discussion.

Die Forschung zum Informationsverhalten in Archiven hat wiederholt gezeigt, dass der Zugang zu Archivbeständen durch einen grundlegenden Wissensmangel über die Informationsbedürfnisse von Archivnutzern eingeschränkt wird. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die Vertiefung des empirischen Verständnisses der spezifischen Informationsbedürfnisse von Archivnutzern und damit die Leistung eines grundlegenden Beitrags zur Verbesserung von archivischen Informationssystemen. Dazu untersucht die primäre Forschungsfrage die Möglichkeit der Erarbeitung einer Ontologie, die in angemessener Weise das Erkenntnisinteresse von Nutzern an Archive repräsentiert, und auf formale Anfragen, adäquate Antworten erzeugt. Zu diesem Zweck analysiert die Studie schriftliche Nutzeranfragen an das Bundesarchiv und das Nationalarchiv von Norwegen (Arkivverket). Die primären Forschungsergebnisse umfassen einen methodischen Ansatz, der eine interpretative Analyse schriftlich formulierter Fragen an Archive vertritt und, als Ergebnis seiner erfolgreichen Anwendung, das Archival Knowledge Model (AKM) erarbeitet. Das AKM ist eine ontologische Repräsentation des Gegenstandbereichs, der typischerweise als das Erkenntnisinteresse von Fragen an Archiven erscheint. Die Studie zeigt, dass derartige Anfragen dominante, grundlegende ontologische Muster aufweisen, die auf einen relativ kleinen Satz ontologischer Entitäten formalisiert werden können. Das AKM repräsentiert damit formal und explizit die Informationsbedürfnisse von Archivnutzern in Form einer Ontologie. Diese stellt ein konstitutives Modell für die Evaluierung bestehender Archivinformationssysteme und Datenschemata zur Verfügung und kann die Entwicklung neuer Katalogisierungsregeln oder musterbasierter Abfrageanwendungen unterstützen. / Research on the information behaviour of archive users has repeatedly shown that access to archival knowledge bases such as via finding aids is hindered by a certain deficiency in knowledge about users and their information needs. The objective of this study is to increase our empirical understanding of the information needs of archive users in order to facilitate access to archival information systems. The primary research question explores the possibility of creating an ontology that can reasonably represent archival inquiries and their probable interpretations as formal queries to the model of the archival target world that would generate an adequate response. For this purpose, the study analyzes archival information needs as expressed in written natural language questions submitted to the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv) and the National Archives of Norway (Arkivverket). The primary results point to a methodological approach that advocates an interpretative analysis of written natural language inquiries and, as the result of its practical and successful application, the Archival Knowledge Model (AKM). This constitutes an ontological representation of the subject matter typically appearing as the interest of archival inquiries. The study thus shows that written natural language questions submitted to archives exhibit dominant fundamental ontological patterns, which can be formalized to a relatively small set of entities utilizing the CIDOC CRM and compatible extensions wherever its semantics are found to be inadequate. The AKM formally and explicitly represents the information needs of archive users in the form of an ontology, thus providing a constitutive model for the evaluation of existing archive information systems and data schemas and may inform the development of new cataloguing rules or pattern-based query applications.

Task-based Embedded Assessment of Functional Abilities for Aging in Place

Many older adults desire to maintain their quality of life by living and aging independently in their own homes. However, it is difficult for older adults to notice and track the subtle changes in their own abilities because these abilities can change gradually over a long period of time. Technology in the form of ubiquitous sensors embedded in objects in the home can play a role in keeping track of the functional abilities of individuals unobtrusively, objectively, and continuously over a long period of time. This work introduces a sensing technique called “task-based embedded assessment” that monitors how well specific tasks important for independence are carried out using everyday objects found in the home with which individuals regularly interact. Following formative studies on the information needs of older adults and their caregivers, a sensing system called “dwellSense” that can monitor, assess, and provide feedback about how well individuals complete tasks, such as taking medications, using the phone, and making coffee, was designed, built, and evaluated. Multiple longterm (over 10 months) field deployments of dwellSense were used to investigate how the data collected from the system could support greater self-awareness of abilities and intentions to improve in task performance. Presenting and reflecting on data from ubiquitous sensing systems such as dwellSense is challenging because it is both highly dimensional as well as large in volume, particularly if it is collected over a long period of time. Thus, this work also investigates the time dimension of reflection and has identified that real-time feedback is particularly useful for supporting behavior change, and longer-term trended feedback is useful for greater awareness of abilities. Traditional forms of assessing the functional abilities of individuals tend to be either biased, lacking ecological validity, infrequent, or expensive to conduct. An automated sensor-based approach for assessment is compared to traditional performance testing by a trained clinician and found to match well with clinician-generated ratings that are objective, frequent, and ecologically valid. The contributions from this thesis not only advance the state of the art for maintaining quality of life and care for older adults, but also provide the foundations for designing personal sensing systems that aim to assess an individual’s abilities and support behaviors through the feedback of objective, timely sensed information.

Information-seeking behaviour of the Open Window School of Visual Communication undergraduate students : a case study

The focus of this study is to investigate the information-seeking behaviour of the undergraduate art and design students of The Open Window School of Visual Communication. A qualitative approach with case study strategy is followed. For sampling purposes The Open Window School of Visual Communication was selected. Various qualitative research methods and literature on information-seeking behaviour are explored. The data were collected through one-on-one interviews. The findings show that various factors influence the information-seeking behaviour of undergraduate art and design students. Aspects in the users’ personal environment, such as meaning, experience, skills, preferences, and actions, have a significant influence on their information-seeking behaviour. Further factors deriving from the students’ context that influence their information-seeking behaviour are curricula, tasks, people (lecturers, artists, designers), sources, and technology applied to accomplish tasks. All these contributing factors have their own sets of requirements with which the art students have to comply. In addition, the findings show that the students’ digital literacy skills influence their information literacy skills. The findings also show that the factors that influence The Open Window students’ information-seeking behaviour influence the library as information service, in terms of the library sources and services the students use. Recommendations are made in order to appropriately address the information- seeking needs of this specific user group and to guide the students to best ways in information-seeking. / Information Science / M. The information seeking behaviour of black investors in the MTN Asonge scheme, Capricorn District, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Seeking information to support investment decision-making is a key component of every successful investment business. The literature review revealed that informed investors make greater use of accounting disclosures and non-earnings information in order to form more precise earnings expectations. By contrast, a lack of accurate investment information makes it difficult for investors to decide when to buy, hold or sell their investment. This study investigated information needs and seeking behaviour of black investors in the MTN Asonge scheme in Capricorn District of Limpopo Province. The study endeavoured to acquire understanding of investors’ information needs and how they seek information to support their investment decisions. To this end, a qualitative phenomenological research approach was followed. Purposive snowball sampling was applied to sample the study respondents who were later interviewed. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with six investors to collect data which were subsequently analysed thematically. The three types of information sources identified as core to investment decision-making include personal, online and printed information. The findings showed that although the majority of MTN Asonge investors were aware of different formats in which investment information is available, they did not use modern electronic information storing and retrieval strategies, such as conducting online internet searches to access information published on corporate websites. The respondents experienced various challenges when seeking investment information, opting to rely on personal sources such as friends, close relatives and colleagues. Furthermore, the investors appeared not to be aware of personal information sources such as investment advisors, information brokers, roundtables and one-on-one discussions. With the aid of a "case study" research design, this thesis analyses the typology of informational services, whose prudent application can influence relations of institutions existing within the drama industry with the broader public. The theoretical part sheds light on the problematic definition of "information services", which is placed in the context of online marketing, and introduces ways, in which this term possesses an added value in the form of affecting the applied processes of public relations within particular institutions. Secondly, it includes basic methodological perspectives on quantitative research, the rules of performing case study research as the selected research design, and last but not least, it describes utilised methods of data collection. The last and most key part of the thesis is based on resulting application of the typology of information services, discussed in the previous parts, and concerns itself with the aforementioned question of their influence on public relation processes of individual institutions. These include the information portal divadlo.cz, which serves caters for the domestic sphere of theatre, and an official web presentation of the Divadlo na Zabradli theatre. A methodology for modeling healthcare teams and an evaluation of Business Process Modeling Notation as a Modeling Language

Whether it is offering services, delivering solutions or driving innovations, team work has been a hallmark of efficiency and effectiveness in various industries. The healthcare industry is not left out as its service delivery process involves numerous interfaces, information flows and patient hand-offs among professionals with different educational training, differing knowledge levels and possibly working from different locations as well. As healthcare delivery evolves to being more patient-centered, so does the team settings as well, becoming more collaborative. Such changes also translate into a need for support systems to evolve to be able to provide support for the extent of collaboration that would be needed. A framework is needed to guide in the development of such systems. However, due to the varying needs of patients, team types and make-up would generally differ, so we explored the different types of team settings studying what they entail based on their various degrees of collaboration. We therefore present in this thesis a model of team based concepts, an ontology formalizing the model, team based scenarios designed using the ontology and then application of the scenarios to test the ability of BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) to model healthcare teams.
