But most of this data are stored in non-standard ways, isolated and independent, making it very hard for its use by third party systems providers. This work proposes the creation of an approach for capturing this open government data in an automated way, allowing its use in various applications. For that a Web Crawler was built for the capture and storing of this open government data, as well as an API for making this data available in JSON format, that way developers can easily use this data on their application. We also performed an evaluation of the API for developers with different levels of experience. / Atualmente os dados abertos governamentais exercem um papel fundamental na transparência pública na gestão dos governos, além de ser uma obrigação legal. Porém grande parte desses dados são publicados em formatos diversos, isolados e independentes, dificultado seu reaproveitamento por sistemas de terceiros que poderiam reusar informações disponibilizadas em tais portais. Este trabalho propõe a criação de uma abordagem para captura de dados abertos governamentais de forma automatizada, permitindo sua reutilização em outras aplicações. Para isso foi construído um Web Crawler para captura e armazenamento de Dados Abertos Governamentais (DAG) e a API DAG Prefeituras para disponibilizar esses dados no formato JSON para que outros desenvolvedores possam utilizar esses dados em suas aplicações. On the other hand, the Open Goverment Data (OGD) are data relationated to the governamental activity, available on the Internet. The publications are fragmented in dierent and uncorrelated portals, also do not follow a standard pattern format. Thus, this work proposes a platform to collect and distribute OGD in a centralized way, in order to provide consolidated information to the context of SC. Also, two validations of this proposal are presented, the first one promoting the solidification of the platform and the second one being an experimental study applied at the academic environment, were eight graduation students where supervisionated, divided into two groups, during the development of two SC projects, consisting of comparative and graphic visualization OGD portals. The experimental group used the platform proposed here as a OGD source, and the control group used OGD collected directly through the governmental transparency portals. At the end of the study, with the intention to find benefits in the utilization of a centralized platform, statistical tests were applied to the collected metrics, and expressive advantages to the experimental group were found, related to the quantity of source-code lines and the development time, indicating that the platform oered benefits during the cycle of development of the project. / O conceito de Cidades Inteligentes (CI) visa prover às cidades sistemas dinâmicos e flexíveis, que interagem entre si e auxiliam a manter a estabilidade e escalabilidade de seus recursos e serviços, usualmente utilizando-se de sensores e coletores, com altos custos de implantação e manutenção. Por outro lado, os Dados Abertos Governamentais (DAG) são dados referentes às atividades governamentais, disponibilizados através da Internet. As publicações são fragmentadas em portais distintos e não correlacionados, além de não seguirem um padrão de formato definido. Assim, este trabalho propõe uma plataforma de coleta e disponibilização centralizada de DAG, com o intuito de prover informações consolidadas ao contexto de CI. Ainda, são apresentadas duas validações desta proposta, a primeira promovendo a solidificação da plataforma e a segunda um estudo experimental aplicado no ambiente acadêmico, no qual foram supervisionados oito estudantes de graduação, divididos em dois grupos, durante o desenvolvimento de dois projetos de CI, consistindo em portais de visualização gráfica e comparativa de DAG. O grupo experimental utilizou a plataforma aqui proposta como fonte de DAG, e o grupo controle utilizou-se de DAG coletados diretamente nos portais de transparência governamental. Ao fim do estudo, com o intuito de encontrar benefícios na utilização de uma plataforma centralizada, foram aplicados testes estatísticos às métricas coletadas, e expressivas vantagens em relação à quantidade de linhas de código-fonte e ao tempo de desenvolvimento foram encontradas para o grupo experimental, indicando que a plataforma ofereceu benefícios durante o ciclo de desenvolvimento do projeto.

Apesar de populares e eficientes na descoberta de problemas, esses métodos tradicionais são considerados bastante caros, devido aos custos de envolver usuários, de preparar a infra-estrutura e especialmente da própria execução dos métodos e análise de seus resultados. A qualidade dos resultados da execução desses métodos depende da escolha dos usuários participantes da avaliação, que precisam ser representativos de todos os perfis de usuários da aplicação avaliada. Na Web, devido à diversidade e característica distribuída dos usuários, a obtenção de usuários representativos dos diversos perfis torna-se bastante difícil. Nos métodos tradicionais de avaliação, especialistas em usabilidade analisam a interação de cada usuário interagindo com a aplicação, para encontrar problemas de usabilidade. Esta análise depende do conhecimento e esforço desses especialistas para encontrar problemas na aplicação avaliada. Desse modo, os métodos tradicionais, se utilizados em grande escala de usuários, tornam-se demasiadamente caros devido a seus custos e tempo de execução. Outra característica importante das aplicações Web é sua constante evolução, o que necessita de avaliações de usabilidade periódicas e constantes, para verificar se alterações não prejudicam sua usabilidade. Da mesma forma, os métodos tradicionais de avaliação de usabilidade tornam-se demasiadamente caros, se utilizados em avaliações constantes da usabilidade de aplicações Web. Nesse contexto, esta tese buscou, na automatização do processo de avaliação de usabilidade, uma alternativa para diminuir as dificuldades mencionadas anteriormente em se avaliar a usabilidade de aplicações Web, especialmente em sua fase de manutenção. Assim, esta tese defende a hipótese de que, utilizando-se um método de avaliação de usabilidade fundamentado na captura e análise da interação de usuários de maneira remota e automatizada, é possível diminuir as dificuldades existentes nos métodos tradicionais na fase de manutenção de uma aplicação Web, possibilitando ainda: a análise da interação de usuários em campo e em grande escala de usuários; a identificação de padrões de interação dos usuários com a aplicação; uma avaliação com baixo custo de execução, favorecendo a realização de avaliações periódicas de usabilidade de uma aplicação Web. In spite of their popularity and efficiency in finding usability problems, these traditional methods are considered expensive, due to the costs of involving users in the evaluation, preparing the infrastructure and specially, due to the costs of executing the methods and analyzing the results. The quality of the results obtained with these methods depends on the users participating of the evaluation, who need to represent all the user's profiles of the evaluated application. In the Web, due to the diversity and distributed location of the users, it is difficult to obtain representative users. In traditional methods, usability experts analyze the behavior of each user interacting with the application in order to detect usability problems. This subjective analysis depends on the knowledge and work of the expert to find the problems. This way, the traditional methods became too expensive when it is necessary to involve high number of users in the evaluation. Another important aspect of Web applications is their frequent evolvement, which requires usability evaluations performed frequently to avoid usability problems caused by changes on the applications. The same way, the traditional methods are too expensive to be performed in a regular basis. In that context, this thesis proposes an automatic method for usability evaluation, as an alternative approach to deal with the difficulties mentioned above. This way, this thesis supports the hypothesis that is possible to decrease the difficulties regarding to the traditional methods through a usability evaluation method based on the automatic capture and analysis of user's interaction. Thus, this thesis, presents the development of the WebHint, a remote and automatic usability evaluation method for Web applications. Intelligent information processing in building monitoring systems and applications

Abstract Global warming has set in motion a trend for cutting energy costs to reduce the carbon footprint. Reducing energy consumption, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating energy wastage are among the main goals of the European Union (EU). The buildings sector is the largest user of energy and CO2 emitter in the EU, estimated at approximately 40% of the total consumption. According to the International Panel on Climate Change, 30% of the energy used in buildings could be reduced with net economic benefits by 2030. At the same time, indoor air quality is recognized more and more as a distinct health hazard. Because of these two factors, energy efficiency and healthy housing have become active topics in international research. The main aims of this thesis were to study and develop a wireless building monitoring and control system that will produce valuable information and services for end-users using computational methods. In addition, the technology developed in this thesis relies heavily on building automation systems (BAS) and some parts of the concept termed the “Internet of Things” (IoT). The data refining process used is called knowledge discovery from data (KDD) and contains methods for data acquisition, pre-processing, modeling, visualization and interpreting the results and then sharing the new information with the end-users. In this thesis, four examples of data analysis and knowledge deployment are presented. The results of the case studies show that innovative use of computational methods provides a good basis for researching and developing new information services. In addition, the data mining methods used, such as regression and clustering completed with efficient data pre-processing methods, have a great potential to process a large amount of multivariate data effectively. The innovative and effective use of digital information is a key element in the creation of new information services. The service business in the building sector is significant, but plenty of new possibilities await capable and advanced companies or organizations. In addition, end-users, such as building maintenance personnel and residents, should be taken into account in the early stage of the data refining process. Furthermore, more advantages can be gained by courageous co-operation between companies and organizations, by utilizing computational methods for data processing to produce valuable information and by using the latest technologies in the research and development of new innovations. / Tiivistelmä Rakennus- ja kiinteistösektori on suurin fossiilisilla polttoaineilla tuotetun energian käyttäjä. Noin 40 prosenttia kaikesta energiankulutuksesta liittyy rakennuksiin, rakentamiseen, rakennusmateriaaleihin ja rakennuksien ylläpitoon. Ilmastonmuutoksen ehkäisyssä rakennusten energiankäytön vähentämisellä on suuri merkitys ja rakennuksissa energiansäästöpotentiaali on suurin. Tämän seurauksena yhä tiiviimpi ja energiatehokkaampi rakentaminen asettaa haasteita hyvän sisäilman laadun turvaamiselle. Näistä seikoista johtuen sisäilman laadun tutkiminen ja jatkuvatoiminen mittaaminen on tärkeää. Väitöskirjan päätavoitteena on kuvata kehitetty energiankulutuksen ja sisäilman laadun monitorointijärjestelmä. Järjestelmän tuottamaa mittaustietoa on jalostettu eri loppukäyttäjiä palvelevaan muotoon. Tiedonjalostusprosessi koostuu tiedon keräämisestä, esikäsittelystä, tiedonlouhinnasta, visualisoinnista, tulosten tulkitsemisesta ja oleellisen tiedon välittämisestä loppukäyttäjille. Aineiston analysointiin on käytetty tiedonlouhintamenetelmiä, kuten esimerkiksi klusterointia ja ennustavaa mallintamista. Väitöskirjan toisena tavoitteena on tuoda esille jatkuvatoimiseen mittaamiseen liittyviä haasteita sekä rohkaista yrityksiä ja organisaatioita käyttämään tietovarantoja monipuolisemmin ja tehokkaammin. Väitöskirja pohjautuu viiteen julkaisuun, joissa kuvataan kehitetty monitorointijärjestelmä, osoitetaan tiedonjalostusprosessin toimivuus erilaisissa tapauksissa ja esitetään esimerkkejä kuhunkin prosessivaiheeseen soveltuvista laskennallisista menetelmistä. Julkaisuissa on kuvattu energiankulutuksen ja sisäilman laadun informaatiopalvelu sekä sisäilman laatuun liittyviä data-analyysejä omakoti- ja kerrostaloissa sekä koulurakennuksissa. Innovatiivinen digitaalisen tiedon hyödyntäminen on avainasemassa kehitettäessä uusia informaatiopalveluita. Kiinteistöalalle on kehitetty lukuisia informaatioon pohjautuvia palveluita, mutta ala tarjoaa edelleen hyviä liiketoimintamahdollisuuksia kyvykkäille ja kehittyneille yrityksille sekä organisaatioille.

AFRIKAANS : Die navorsing is uitgevoer ten einde die aard en benutting van Personeelondersteuning- en Loopbaansentrum (POLS) se dienste aan die AID-personeel van die hoofkampus van UP, te verken en waar primêr gebruik gemaak was van ‘n kwantitatiewe navorsingsbenadering. Met die aanvang van die navorsingsprosedure was ‘n uitgebreide literatuurstudie oor verwante konsepte van WHPs en die universiteit as werkplek onderneem, gevolg deur empiriese navorsing deur die benutting van twee self-geadministreerde posvraelyste. Die eerste vraelys was aan geselekteerde AID-toesighouers en die tweede vraelys aan AID-werknemers ook geselekteer volgens die proporsioneel-gestratifiseerde steekproeftrekking, versprei. Daar was derhalwe deur middel van evaluerende navorsing ondersoek ingestel na werknemers en toesighouers se behoeftes en verwagtinge van die bestaande dienste, die mate van tevredenheid wat ervaar was en of hul deur die huidige dienste bereik word. Die behoefte aan ‘n volwaardige en gestruktureerde WHP vir UP was ook bepaal. Die studie het ‘n uitgebreide teoretiese deurskouing van die literatuur oor WHPs in die algemeen voorsien en aspekte soos die universiteit as werkplek, met spesifieke klem op die AID as werkplek, ondersoek en beskryf. Indien die literatuurstudie oor WHP in ag geneem word, blyk dit duidelik dat die dienste soos deur POLS gelewer, nie aan die standaarde en riglyne soos deur EAPA-SA gestel, voldoen nie. POLS voldoen op hierdie stadium ook nie aan ‘n tipiese WHP of Bedryfsmaatskaplike werk program nie, vanweë die lewering van beperkte dienste. Die literatuur het ook lig gewerp op die feit dat die WHP ten doel het om die organisasie se visie en missie te ondersteun. Die werksopset, organisasie dinamika en personeel diversiteit binne die Universiteit van Pretoria het dan ook aangedui dat die universiteit ‘n unieke werkgewer is en ook gebonde is tot die onderskrywing van verskeie wetgewing soos van toepassing op alle ander werkgewers. Die AID se missie, organisasiestruktuur, strategiese bestuur, fasiliteite en menslike hulpbronne dui daarop dat die AID nie van enige ander organisasie met betrekking tot werknemer en werkgewer verwagtinge verskil nie. Die literatuurstudie het aangedui dat die kern van WHPs gesetel is in ‘n doelgerigte en gestruktureerde program met die uitsluitlike doel om die werknemer se algehele maatskaplike funksionering te bevorder. Die empiriese navorsing het getoon dat POLS, as die Universiteit van Pretoria se hulpverleningsdiens, nie ten volle in die doel kon slaag nie. Die situasie kan grootliks toegeskryf word aan onkunde met betrekking tot POLS en gepaardgaande dienslewering asook die leemte aan doeltreffende bemarking deur POLS. Daar word derhalwe aanbeveel dat die Universiteit van Pretoria sterk oorweging skenk aan die ontwikkeling en implementering van ‘n volwaardige gestruktureerde werknemerhulpprogram, geskoei op die voorskrifte en beleid van EAPA-SA. ENGLISH : The research was performed to explore the nature and utilization of the Employee Assistance- and Career Centre's (EACC) services to the Academic Information Service (AIS) personnel on the main Campus of the University of Pretoria, and where a quantitative research approach was primarily used. With the commencement of the research procedure an extensive literature study about related concepts of EAP's and the University as a work place was undertaken, followed by empirical research through the usage of two self administered post questionnaires. The first questionnaire was sent to selected AIS-supervisors and the second questionnaire to the AIS-employees, also selected according to proportional stratified sampling procedure. An investigation was therefore done, through research evaluation, whether the employees and supervisors' needs and expectations of existing services, the extent of satisfaction experienced have been met and whether they are reached by the present services. The need for a full-fledged and structured EAP for UP was also determined. The study provided an extensive theoretical study of the literature on EAPs in general and surveyed and described aspects such as the university as work place, with specific emphasis on AIS as work place. Should the literature study on EAP be taken into account, it is evident that services provided by EACC, do not comply with standards and guidelines set by EAPA-SA. The EACC does not comply, at this stage, to a typical EAP or Occupational Social Work programme, because of the delivery of limited services. The literature also revealed the fact that EAPs purpose is to support the vision and mission of the organization. The work set-up, organization dynamics and personnel diversity with-in the University of Pretoria also indicated that the University is a unique employer who is also tied to the underwriting of several legislation applicable to all employers. The AIS's mission, organizational structure, strategical management, facilities and human resources, indicated that AIS do not differ from any other organization with regards to employee and employer expectations. The literature study indicated that the core of EAPs is settled in a purposeful and structured programme with the exclusive purpose to promote the employee's entire social well-being. The empirical study showed that the EACC, as employee assistance service of the University of Pretoria, could not reach the expected goals. This can be assigned to the lack of knowledge regarding EACC and their services, as well as the inefficient marketing by EACC. It is therefore recommended that the University of Pretoria should strongly consider a full-fledged Employee Assistance Programme based on the prescription and policies upheld by EAPA-SA. / Dissertation (MSD)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted
