Examining the Impact of Art-Based Anchor Charts on Academic Achievement in Language Arts

Fontanez, Kimberly Ivette 01 January 2017 (has links)
The students at 2 middle schools in County SD, NHMS and WMS are not scoring on or above grade level on the information text portion of the English Language Arts (ELA) standardized SC Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (SCPASS) test given annually in South Carolina. The teachers developed and implemented art-based anchor charts to help close the achievement gap among the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. There has been no formal exploration of the teachers' experiences regarding the use of anchor charts. Using the elements of problem-based learning as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this project study was to explore the teachers' experiences of art-based anchor charts on increasing students' comprehension on informational text. The research questions guiding this study examined the teachers' experiences and perceptions with using art-based anchor charts and the teachers' perceptions of which strategies are helpful in increasing comprehension on informational text. Using a single case study research design and purposeful sampling, 5 middle school teachers who used art-based anchor charts were interviewed. Open and axial coding were employed through transcribe interviews with iterative categorization to collapse the codes into themes then findings. The findings revealed that the anchor charts allowed for use of visuals, prior knowledge, art-based activities, and cooperative learning to create understanding and relevance to informational text comprehension were effective for engaging and encouraging high-level performance for students. The findings from this study may be used to assist the teachers when developing and implementing art-based anchor charts and with helping students increase their reading comprehension on informational text.

Du Perron, Simon 01 1900 (has links)
Big data is one of those topics we keep hearing about without knowing exactly what it means. Often associated with the field of artificial intelligence, these large datasets are the backbone of a growing number of business models that focus on leveraging the digital data we generate on a daily basis. This Master’s thesis seeks to demonstrate that this exploitation of big data by businesses is not happening in a legal vacuum. Big data cannot be considered as an object of rights in the absence of a formal definition. A review of the multidisciplinary literature on the subject invites us to conceive them as an information asset with five main characteristics: volume, velocity, variety, value and veracity. The study of these characteristics allows the jurist to reach a sufficient understanding of the phenomenon in order to approach it through the lens of positive law. Following a legal qualification exercise, big data emerges both as intangible movable property and as a set of technological documents carrying various types of information, some of which can be qualified as personal information. The legal framework governing the exploitation of big data is therefore built around the legislative protection of informational privacy, which is embodied in privacy laws. This framework is complemented by certain rules relating to document management and the right to equality. An effective way to present this legal framework is according to the life cycle of personal information within big data. Thus, it appears that the principles stemming from the personalist and minimalist approach of Quebec's data protection law apply, albeit not without struggle, to the collection of digital data as well as their processing by businesses.

The Role of Temporal Fine Structure in Everyday Hearing

Agudemu Borjigin (12468234) 28 April 2022 (has links)
<p>This thesis aims to investigate how one fundamental component of the inner-ear (cochlear) response to all sounds, the temporal fine structure (TFS), is used by the auditory system in everyday hearing. Although it is well known that neurons in the cochlea encode the TFS through exquisite phase locking, how this initial/peripheral temporal code contributes to everyday hearing and how its degradation contributes to perceptual deficits are foundational questions in auditory neuroscience and clinical audiology that remain unresolved despite extensive prior research. This is largely because the conventional approach to studying the role of TFS involves performing perceptual experiments with acoustic manipulations of stimuli (such as sub-band vocoding), rather than direct physiological or behavioral measurements of TFS coding, and hence is intrinsically limited. The present thesis addresses these gaps in three parts: 1) developing assays that can quantify TFS coding at the individual level 2) comparing individual differences in TFS coding to differences in speech-in-noise perception across a range of real-world listening conditions, and 3) developing deep neural network (DNN) models of speech separation/enhancement to complement the individual-difference approach. By comparing behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG)-based measures, Part 1 of this work identified a robust test battery that measures TFS processing in individual humans. Using this battery, Part 2 subdivided a large sample of listeners (N=200) into groups with “good” and “poor” TFS sensitivity. A comparison of speech-in-noise scores under a range of listening conditions between the groups revealed that good TFS coding reduces the negative impact of reverberation on speech intelligibility, and leads to reduced reaction times suggesting lessened listening effort. These results raise the possibility that cochlear implant (CI) sound coding strategies could be improved by attempting to provide usable TFS information, and that these individualized TFS assays can also help predict listening outcomes in reverberant, real-world listening environments. Finally, the DNN models (Part 3) introduced significant improvements in speech quality and intelligibility, as evidenced by all acoustic evaluation metrics and test results from CI listeners (N=8). These models can be incorporated as “front-end” noise-reduction algorithms in hearing assistive devices, as well as complement other approaches by serving as a research tool to help generate and rapidly sub-select the most viable hypotheses about the role of TFS coding in complex listening scenarios.</p>

Informational attributes behind consumer payment habits and settlement preference / Informativa attribut bakom konsumenternas betalningsvanor och transaktionspreferens

Tchibaline, Alexander, Mårtensson, David January 2018 (has links)
Sweden is known for being at the forefront of becoming a cashless society. However, cash continues to be an important part of the payment ecosystem butthere are limited studies and data regarding the preference for holding cash. Previousstudies have shown that the use of cash is declining with regards to comers and thatthere are behavior differences between cultures and sociodemographic groups inregards to characteristics and preferences for payment methods. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the informational attributes that drives the preference forholding cash by studying two extreme cases, Sweden which is a pioneer of cashlesssociety, and Germany which is one of the most conservative cash-intensivecountries in the Western world. Primary quantitative data was derived fromstandardized questionnaires issued in both countries by Loomis AB; the data wasdescribed and analyzed with applicable statistical procedures. A multivariate analysiswas performed on a specific segment of the collected data were the respondents hadbeen asked to rate cash associated statements based on their agreeableness towardsthem. These segments were then examined through a Principal component analysisto determine the underlying dimensions regarding preferences for cash. Our resultssuggest that Germans withdrew cash more frequently, from a wider spectrum ofdenominations and carried it to a larger extend than Swedes. Swedes made limitedwithdrawals, of small denominations and preferred to carry smaller amounts of cash. The results also show that there were differences in the perception and preferencesfor cash between sociodemographic groups, with e.g. older age groups being used to itand the youngest using it due to ‘status quo bias’. The main conclusions include thatthe informational attributes such as security, anonymity, ease of use and paymentinfrastructure was the main drives for the preferences of holding cash.

Counterproductive Work Behaviors, Justice, and Affect: A Meta-Analysis

Cochran, Megan 01 January 2014 (has links)
Counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) are an expensive phenomenon for organizations, costing billions of dollars collectively each year. Recent research has focused on justice perceptions as predictors of CWBs, but little research has been conducted on the specific types of counterproductive work behaviors (i.e., sabotage, withdrawal, production deviance, abuse, and theft) that result from specific organizational justice perceptions (i.e., distributive, procedural, interpersonal, and informational) and the mediating effect of state affect. The current paper meta-analyzed the relationships between justice, CWB, and state affect and found that justice was negatively related to dimensions of CWB and state positive/negative affect were negatively/positively related to CWB dimensions, respectively. However, mediation of the relationship between justice and CWB by state affect was inconsistent across justice types and CWB dimensions. These findings suggests that, while managers should maintain an awareness of justice and state affect as individual predictors of CWBs, the current study does not necessarily support the claim that state affect explains the relationship between justice and counterproductive work behavior dimensions.
