An analysis of the effects of federal, state and local social expenditure on poverty in Brazil - 1987-2009Hiromoto, Martha Hanae 15 April 2013 (has links)
The total public social spending in Brazil reached about R$800 billion in 2009, almost 25% of Brazilian GDP. Giving this increasing and expressive volume, this dissertation analyzes the effect of the three levels of government social spending on poverty in Brazil - federal, state and municipal. Three models were estimated with a 20 year\'s state panel data (1987 to 2009) analyzing the federal and state spending effect. We also estimated the municipal expenditure effect on poverty using data from 1991, 2000 and 2010 in 5.058 municipalities. The simultaneity bias between government spending and poverty was treated by applying the two stages least squares method, using the political ideology as instrumental variables. The results showed that the spending of the three levels of government reduce poverty in Brazil. Particularly, the spending budget functions with higher effectiveness on reduce poverty are: federal and municipal spending on health and sanitation, state and local aggregated spending. In addition, we also analyzed the effect of the state spending data interacting with its initial conditions in 1980 - per capita income, inequality, poverty, level of education and infant mortality. We concluded that the states initial conditions as well as its specific characteristics influence the extent to which their spending affects poverty.

A música em Hegel e Hanslick: transição de uma estética musical do conteúdo para uma estética musical da forma / Music in Hegel and Hanslick: transition from a Musical Aesthetic of Content to a Musical Aesthetic of FormMorais, Pablo de 19 October 2018 (has links)
This dissertation deals with the question of the meaning of music according to the philosophy of art of G. W. F. Hegel and the musicological problematizations of E. Hanslick. The main objective is to present the way in which each author deals with this theme, but pointing out some aspects referring to the way Hanslick dialogued with the Hegelian aesthetics and that would be directly linked to a transformation of the way of conceiving autonomous instrumental music, especially with regard to the meaning of the musical form, in function of the way each author conceived its relation with the content, in view of the fact that Hegel was a philosopher of art and Hanslick a musicologist. The core of this work is based on the analysis of the chapter on music of Hegel\'s Lectures on Aesthetics and Hanslick\'s essay On the Musically Beautiful, as well as on the musical repertoire that both authors were exposed to.

Improvisation i tidig instrumentalundervisningBergström, Sebastian January 2013 (has links)
This study aims to elucidate the presence of improvisation in early instrumental teaching in culture- and music schools. Two issues will be explored within this context. Firstly I intended to examine how instrumental teachers describe their teaching and the extent to which they use improvisation in class, by inviting a selection of teachers to answer a questionnaire. The second aspect of the work consisted of the study of 25 piano books for young beginners. In these teaching materials the presence and frequency of improvisational moments were examined. The results suggested that the use of improvisation during lessons varies between respondents. Furthermore, the findings from the study of piano books for young beginners demonstrate that improvising material is relatively rare and occurs only sporadically. Suggestions are made for how improvisation can be integrated into instrumental teaching to encourage students to develop creativity and personality in their music. It is hoped that this study can encourage teachers to support their students to improvise on their instruments. This would likely increase students’ creativity and achieve positive effects associated with improvisation.

L'entreprise de séductionGilbert, Nicolas, 1979- January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation consists of two parts. The first and main part is the score of L 'entreprise de seduction, a 22-minute work for solo cello and instrumental ensemble [1011, 1010, percussion (1 player), piano, 2111], along with a recording on compact disc. The second part is an accompanying analytical text about the work. In the text, after a short description of the project, of its objectives and original contribution, we discuss the theoretical basis of my compositional approach. This approach stands on the fundamental structural independence of poiesis and esthesis, and leads to a musical aesthetics favouring formal transparency and seeking an active listening attitude. Two sets of compositional techniques are then introduced: techniques using the 12-tone row and techniques based on chance operations. We observe that those techniques all endeavour to balance systematicism and intuition to the greater profit of musical expression. We then proceed to a detailed analysis of L 'entreprise de seduction revealing its main musical material and processes. The text concludes with a few overall comments and by a discussion of the possible impact of this composition on my future projects.

Essays on Civil War, HIV/AIDS, and Human capital in Sub-Saharan African CountriesDjimeu Wouabe, Eric 12 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is based on three essays. The first chapter analyses the impact of 27 years of civil war in Angola on human capital, expenditures per adult equivalent and fertility. The prediction of the effects of civil war is done through a neoclassical unitary household model in the tradition of Rosenzweig. Using instrumental variable method, this thesis shows that civil war has a negative and disastrous impact in short-term on health of children, this effect is persistent. Civil war has no impact on expenditures per adult equivalent. It increases enrollment and decreases fertility in the short term. The second chapter ofthis thesis analyzes the effectiveness of a social program in a conflict country such as Angola and explores whether this effectiveness depends on the intensity of the conflict. Our identification strategy is based on the political geography of the deployment of the program based on a model of spatial competition of Hotelling. This thesis shows that the Angola Social Fund had a positive impact on expenditures per adult equivalent and on one of the main anthropometric measurements namely the height for age z-score. The program's effectiveness in function to the intensity of the conflict is analyzed using the local instrumental variable estimator. The thesis shows that the program's effectiveness increases with the intensity of the conflict. The last chapter of this thesis analyzes in the case of Cameroon, the impact of teacher training on HIV/AIDS. The two criteria for selecting participating schools, leads us to choose as identification strategy the regression discontinuity design. This thesis shows that 15 to 17 year old girls in teacher training schools are between 7 and 10 percentage points less likely to have started childbearing. For 12 to 13 year old girls, the likelihood of self-reported abstinence and condom use is also significantly higher in treated schools.
