A Guide for the Performance of Trumpet Mariachi Music in Schools

Bennett, James G., fl. 1979- 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide a guide for the instruction of a trumpet mariachi performance ensemble in a music curriculum. The fulfillment of this purpose is dependent upon the data supplied in answer to the sub problems: (1) What socio-cultural information provides authentic trumpet mariachi music; (2) What trumpet mariachi literature illustrates the repertoire and style; (3) What instructional source materials may be developed such that Mexican American and non-Mexican American instructors build a competency in repertoire and style; (4) How could this guide be evaluated in its functional design for a music curriculum? The data collected for use in this study has been presented in three major categories: (1) the history and milieu in which the trumpet, mariachi crystalized; (2) the repertoire--its history and function in Mexican society and the transcriptions of types demonstrating the musical structure; and (3) the technical information relative to the instruction of the particular mariachi instruments. An evaluative instrument has been supplied in an attempt to establish the validity of the information and examples provided in this practicum. The validity of the research seems to rest on its authenticity and its serviceability. The findings of this study are stated as assertions based on the literature in general and the repertorial types specifically included. These assertions are aligned with the organization of the data as it has been reported in the body of the dissertation. The conclusions are stated in a similar manner as assertions pertinent to cross referenced statements which may be implied as concepts drawn from the reported data and the literature observed in this study.

Figueiredo, Edson Antônio de Freitas January 2015 (has links)
The instrumental musical education is an educational practice that maintains bonds with the tradition of knowledge transmission between master and apprentice. However, the changes occurred in society in recent decades have brought new demands to music education, implying the need for an education with a context more flexible. In this scenery, the concept of motivational style enables an updated discussion about the teacher's role in the student’s motivation abstracted through featureless for two antagonistic styles, called controlling and autonomy support. Through this theoretical reference, the general objective of this study was set up in investigating the motivational style of instrumental music teachers who work in music schools. In the methodology, first was accomplished an adaptation of a scale that evaluates the teacher’s motivational style and later was conducted a survey with 358 instrumental music teachers. As the psychometric properties results of the scale was found that there was no adjustment to the theoretical model, but we can suggest a new interpretation of the constructs, considering controlling and autonomy support as orthogonal factors. This interpretation was useful for the data analysis. As the result, gender issues emerged with an emphasized contrast when it was noticed that men have a greater tendency to the control. At the same way, the labor issues are related to the motivational style, considering that teachers from a public school tend to be more controlling than teachers from a private school. Variables such as age, work experience and background profile don’t seem to influence the instrumental music teachers’ motivational style. In the end, it is considered that instrumental music teachers’ motivational style is influenced by gender issues and labor issues related to music school. Thus, we also conclude that the theoretical interpretation proposed in this work stimulates the accomplishment for further studies that approach the dynamics of one-to-one music teaching.

From the transcription and analysis of the compositions and musical improvisations of Heraldo do Monte and being based on the concepts so far stablished for compositions and improvisations, it is investigated how the musician articulates with musical elements of the Brazilian urban popular music (choro, samba and frevo), the regional musical manifestations and the jazz, creating a peculiar and inovating style of composing and improvising in the eletric guitar. Through readings of the Imaginário Nacional Popular and how it has manifested in the popular music in the sixties, it is verified in articles and interviews with Heraldo do Monte to what extent these ideas may have influenced the musician in certain aesthetical choices which guided the fusion of the mentioned musical influences for the construction, in his point of view, of a Brazilian eletric guitar / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

The nation and cultural nationality, specially in the state of Mozambique, are complex themes, because they take together a series of political, historical and cultural aspects of the country and its population. For this research, the analitical object chosen was the category of chant and dance made by researchers of the natives of Mozambique, present in anthropological monographs made at the colonial period. Chant and dance are taken together in an ocidental category of research, non-native. So, first of all, we may question: how the authors extract some social life aspects to write about chant and dance? Which thematics are created and delimited? How, in a wide social life, are set certain categories of chant and dance? Taking this point, we hope to know more about which representations are constituted by these anthropology authors in the context of imperial life, and what constitutes their own alterity relationships / Mestrado / Mestre em Antropologia Social

Approche plurielle des liens musique-parole pour la didactique de la prononciation du français comme langue étrangère/seconde / Pluralistic approach of the links between music and speech in the learning and teaching of the pronunciation of French as a foreign/second language

Miras, Gregory 02 December 2014 (has links)
This work deals with the use of instrumental music in the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language. It is part of a pluralistic theoretical framework and an integrated approach of emergentism and social cultural theories. The topic is discussed through three studies: (1) a psychosocial study, (2) a psychoacoustic study and (3) an applied linguistics study – questioning at different levels the potentially developmental intake of instrumental music for French pronunciation as a foreign language. The aim is a contribution to applied linguistics in order to bring empirical data to long-lasting pedagogical practices but also to question recent neurocognitive results in an applied perspective. The first study, which is psychosocial and was led by questionnaires, shows that music learning and teaching can help us to have students focus on sound rather than meaning. The second study, which is psychoacoustic, reveals that, among learners of French, musicians have better reaction times than non-musicians to an AXB discrimination test of close French vowels. The third study, which is quasi- experimental and in intervention, suggests that associating piano notes and vowel aperture doesn’t lead to bigger developmental intake compared to more conventional approaches. However, it seemsto point out to the fact that some learners experience cognitive input even if such impact evokes bimodal tendencies. These three studies prove that instrumental music can be a tool to assist teachers.

This research is based on the thesis, that the piano playing style, of Johnny Alf and João Donato, in the piano instrumental trio performance (with double-bass and drums and/or percussion), can be defined as a link, that could be perceived as a guide of how to play the Brazilian Popular Music from the second half of the last century to our days. This kind of music finds its roots in samba, however is strongly affected by the jazz influences. Our goal is to define the link among Alf and Donato, and demonstrate how it can provide valuable references to the guitarist, within the guitar trio situation, as a source for a reevaluation of his directions on playing the Brazilian Popular Music / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

The Chevalier de Saint-Georges: An Exponent of the Parisian Symphonie Concertant

Braun, Melanie 08 1900 (has links)
The symphonie concertante, a product of the late eighteenth-century Parisian concert societies, provided a vehicle for display of the virtuoso style sought by contemporary audiences. The works of the Chevalier Joseph Boulogne de Saint-Georges, one of its chief exponents, served as strong influences on the development of the form and its diffusion throughout Europe. The symphonies concertantes of Opus VI, No. 1 and Opus X, No. 2 (according to thematic numbering of Barry S. Brook) date from ca. 1775 and 1779 respectively. A complete set of parts for each is to be found in the private collection of M. Andre Meyer in Paris (Opus VI) and in the Universitetsbiblioteket at Lund (Opus X). The thesis contains background material on contemporary Parisian musical society and the life of Saint- Georges, and a modern scoring of the above symphonies concertantes with analysis and conclusions.
