A Case Study Exploring the Preservice Technology Training Experiences of Novice Teachers

Sutton, Susan R. 01 December 2010 (has links)
This qualitative study was designed to identify and explore the preservice technology training experiences of novice teachers and examine their perceptions of how well their teacher preparation program prepared them with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T). Data were collected by following an instrumental case study design utilizing semi-structured interviews, documents, and field notes. Simultaneous collection and analysis of the data helped the researcher to create a deeper understanding of the technology training experiences of novice teachers. The findings of this study revealed that novice teachers believe there was a lack of emphasis on technology integration in their teacher preparation program outside of the one required technology course. They expressed a need for technology training to be integrated across the curriculum. They wanted to be provided with authentic learning experiences so they could connect the theory to the practice in relation to technology integration. They wanted more time to practice, reflect, and plan student-centered, technology-rich lessons and they wanted to see all teacher education faculty modeling technology so connections could be made between the technology tools and the appropriate uses of these tools within their content areas. Last, they believe future preservice teachers need more hands-on experiences in creating student-centered, technology-rich lessons, not just within the one required technology course, but throughout their teacher preparation program. Furthermore, 90 percent of the participants expressed a need for more exposure to the technology standards. They stated the only place they were exposed to these technology standards was in the one required technology course and felt that one semester was not enough exposure for them to learn how to implement each of the standards with confidence. All stated they would have liked to have seen all faculty members throughout the teacher preparation program incorporate these technology standards into their teaching, so they would have been provided with adequate exposure to the technology standards.

Cogito ergo doceo: A cross-case study of Latin teacher cognition in technology-rich communities of practice

Madrigal, Ramón Anthony 01 June 2007 (has links)
This empirical research study investigated the phenomenon of ancient language teacher cognition in the technology-rich contexts of two secondary teachers of Latin. Although one teacher was an inexperienced teacher working in a traditional, face-to-face classroom in an independent school, the other teacher was an experienced teacher working at a public virtual school. Features of teacher cognition, such as pre-active planning and inter-active decision-making were examined from a communities-of-practice theoretical perspective (Wenger, 1998). An exploratory, sequential mixed-methods research design was implemented in this cross-case study. Among the research findings that emerged from this investigation was the notion of the expedient integration of technology (EIT). According to the researcher, EIT includes elements of selective integration, efficient integration, recursive integration, and progressive integration. The researcher discusses important implications that emerged from the study, including theoretical and practical considerations, and also presents several suggestions for future research.

Faculty Integration of Technology in Undergraduate Courses at Private Colleges and Universities

Smith, Evelyn G 01 December 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the integration of technology in undergraduate courses by faculty at private colleges and universities. Integration of technology is using technology as an instructional tool to improve teaching and learning (Clayton-Pedersen & O’Neill, 2005; Wilson & Hayes, 2000; Woodbridge, 2004). Chickering and Gamson’s (1987) 7 principles for good practice in undergraduate education provided the theoretical framework for this research. The researcher conducted a survey of full-time faculty at 21 private colleges and universities in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The results of the study indicated that faculty use technology significantly to communicate high expectations to students and to support diverse talents and ways of learning. However, faculty reported that they do not use technology significantly for the other 5 principles: to support student-faculty contact, promote cooperation and reciprocity among students, promote active learning, provide prompt feedback, and promote time on task. Analysis of the data indicated that female faculty use technology significantly more than male faculty for all 7 principles. Findings regarding age indicated that faculty who are 40-59 use technology significantly more than faculty under 40 to support prompt feedback, time on task, and diverse talents and ways of learning. No significant differences existed between other age groups regarding these 3 principles. No significant differences existed between any age groups regarding use of technology to promote student-faculty contact, encourage reciprocity and cooperation, promote active learning, and communicate high expectations. The results of this study extend the current knowledge about faculty use of technology to advance good practice in undergraduate education. Additionally, the results provide information about differences in use of technology by faculty based on gender and age. These findings may inform institutional policies and practices with regard to implementing a systemic approach to teaching with technology.

Effects of Professional Development on Teachers' Integration of ICT in Teaching in Hong Kong

Leung, Kin Ping January 2004 (has links)
This study produced a theoretically grounded model of professional development suited for supporting teachers in Hong Kong to embed Information and Communication Technologies into the Primary School Curriculum. The model was developed and tested over two years through an intervention based on participatory action research involving school staff and the researcher as a critical friend. The model was tested through the analysis of extensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of teacher behaviours and curricular documents. Teachers' beliefs and practices were found to change significantly during the first year of the project and were further refined during the second year. Leadership, collegial support, physical infrastructure, teacher self-efficacy, and technical knowledge were identified as the most important factors underpinning the successful implementation of the program. The model addresses these factors and has considerable potential to impact on educational practice involving ICT in the Hong Kong context.

Successful Integration of Internet Technology in the K-12 Classroom: Trends Perceptions and Successful Practices.

Edwards, Catherine Anne 04 May 2002 (has links) (PDF)
In 1994, the Federal Government made a commitment to link all classrooms, libraries, businesses, and industries to the information highway by the year 2000. President Clinton mandated that all classrooms in America be connected to the Internet by the year 2000. While many say this commitment and mandate have successfully occurred, there is still concern and questions about what successful integration of the Internet looks like and what specific practices can tap the bountiful resources available on the Internet. School systems have spent billions of dollars investing in hardware, software, and connection to the World Wide Web. Stakeholders demand accountability for time and money spent connecting our classrooms to the World Wide Web. Until educators fully understand what successful integration looks like in the K-12 schools, there will continue to be a digital divide for learners. In this qualitative study, which covers K-12 school systems in a three state area, the researcher interviewed system level supervisors of technology, building level administrators, and classroom teachers. The teachers selected for participation in this study were nominated by the administrators as teachers who demonstrate successful integration of Internet technology in the classroom. This study is an attempt to determine if there are trends, characteristics, or successful practices that other teachers could employ. Findings of the study include the importance of re-evaluating staff development related to the Internet and other technology issues. The results indicate that teachers are most receptive to learning from their peers and other teacher leaders when learning how to integrate the Internet into their classroom curricula. The importance of a planned vision, created by the stakeholders, concerning integration of Internet technology also emerged during the study. In addition, the study addresses the need for building level administrators to be better prepared in order to lead their schools in successful practices concerning integration of the Internet into school curricula.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jarina Rodrigues Fernandes.pdf: 3595121 bytes, checksum: fcb471ae4b155eeda63de733a9966586 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aims to identify ways to use the strategic potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to build an integrated curriculum within the National Program for Integration of Professional Education with Basic Education, in the form of youth and adults Education (PROEJA). Before this challenge, it was sought in a first stage of research to critically understand the meanings of integration, curriculum and the presence / role of technology in the curriculum, specifying how they are considered in the base document of PROEJA, directed to technical professional education at average level / high school and the technical quality course plan, in the PROEJA form, from the São Paulo's campus of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo. In a second stage, it was sought to create a critical collaboration context with the teacher of the investigated Computing course. This activity was expanded to other teachers in search of ways to share and build new meanings on the integration of technology into the curriculum of this course. The theoretic-methodological contributions of this research present characteristic of bricolage: to perform the documents analysis, it was employed thematic maps to support bakhtinian's technology and contributions, as well as principles and procedures of the Critical Research Collaboration to the development and analysis of the interaction along with the research subjects. The analysis of the base document points to the defense of an integrating education of basic education and professional education, with references of critical character, to the role of technology in society and in the curriculum. The analysis of the course plan introduces references to the integration and use of technologies with little emphasis on the operationalization of the integrated curriculum and the role of ICT.The analysis of the interaction to the subjects of research shows diverse meanings related to the integration of ICT into the curriculum of the investigated course. The critical-collaborative research conducted with the Computing teacher pointed to the relevance of: articulate the work with both theoretical and practical knowledge in dealing with ICT and create active role opportunities in the process of knowledge construction for the learners. In terms of challenges it has been identified the need for: reconsider the teacher-student relationship, cognize new methodologies aimed at teaching-researchteaching curriculum and other curriculum practices experienced in the other course disciplines. This last challenge conducted the expansion of the research activity to the other teachers of the course, which showed signs of integrating ICTs to the curriculum of several disciplines in which they were used: applications and software, audio, video, animations, teaching materials available on the web; virtual learning environment integrated to the classroom and research on the Internet. To improve such signals of integration it was raised the possibility of: partnerships between the work of the various disciplines and Computing discipline; involvement of technical staff in the process, the organization of a virtual learning environment for PROEJA; exchanges with students from other federal campuses, creation of a virtual space to publish routes and results of projects developed in the course. Before these possibilities, there were raise the difficulties related to the dynamic of class allocation and the lack of staff meetings per course. As a difficulty-possibility, there was raised the creation of spaces for dialogue between PROEJA teachers, a required activity to fulfill the integration of ICT and the curriculum in the mentioned course / Esta pesquisa tem o objetivo de identificar caminhos para a utilização do potencial estratégico das tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TIC), tendo em vista a construção do currículo integrado no âmbito do Programa Nacional de Integração da Educação Profissional com a Educação Básica, na modalidade de Educação de jovens e adultos (PROEJA).

The Brazil faces several education-related problems, according to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), our country has a deficit in the areas of Reading, Mathematics and Science. PISA is an international initiative that evaluates the students in the range of 15 years, which is equivalent to the approximate period in which students completing primary education in most countries. In 2009, Brazil won the position of 57 (fifty-seventh) place in 65 (sixty-five) evaluated nations. We know that many economic, social and cultural factors influence school failure observed in the PISA assessment, thereby realize the importance in conducting surveys, most directly in the education sector, with respect to training and teaching activities in support of student learning, search an understanding of the educational process, which is a disadvantage in regard to learning. Therefore, we made a qualitative research, descriptive, exploratory, with field research characteristics (GIL, 2008) in the course of night pedagogy, the Faculty of Education (FACED), the Federal University of Cearà (UFC), seeking to check teacher training that takes place in the stage of discipline in Secondary School, in respect of the theoretical foundation with practice in the classroom, in order to investigate the contributions of Fedathi sequence, in teaching activities in curricular training, the course student pedagogy, after attend Internship discipline in Secondary School. For reasons of the goals of this research, we deem necessary a theoretical contribution aimed at training and teaching practice, analyzing the contributions of Tardif (2002) and Perrenoud (2002), and the integration of digital technologies in the educational process, with a focus on pedagogical mediation to use them in the perspective of Valente and Bustamante (2009), in order to promote the teaching-learning methodology, articulating the Sequence Fedathi, Borges Neto (2013), and meaningful learning, adopting a constructivist perspective Ausubel et al. (1980) articulated the use of concept maps Novak (2010), The survey data indicated as phase ownership results Position making and proof of Fedathi sequence, with a deficit in the development of hypotheses for the stages of maturation and solution, we highlight the need for further studies through conceptual maps, incorporating the assumptions of Meaningful Learning, for allocation of this methodology.
