Characterizing Motor Learning of a Novel Reaching Task in a Virtual Environment Using Kinematic Evaluation

January 2010 (has links)
abstract: Virtual environments are used for many physical rehabilitation and therapy purposes with varying degrees of success. An important feature for a therapy environment is the real-time monitoring of a participants' movement performance. Such monitoring can be used to evaluate the environment in addition to the participant's learning. Methods for monitoring and evaluation include tracking kinematic performance as well as monitoring muscle and brain activities through EMG and EEG technology. This study aims to observe trends in individual participants' motor learning based on changes in kinematic parameters and use those parameters to characterize different types of learners. This information can then guide EEG/EMG data analysis in the future. The evaluation of motor learning using kinematic parameters of performance typically compares averages of pre- and post-data to identify patterns of changes of various parameters. A key issue with using pre- and post-data is that individual participants perform differently and have different time-courses of learning. Furthermore, different parameters can evolve at independent rates. Finally, there is great variability in the movements at early stages of learning a task. To address these issues, a combined approach is proposed using robust regression, piece-wise regression and correlation to categorize different participant's motor learning. Using the mixed reality rehabilitation system developed at Arizona State University, it was possible to engage participants in motor learning, as revealed by improvements in kinematic parameters. A combination of robust regression, piecewise regression and correlation were used to reveal trends and characterize participants based on motor learning of three kinematic parameters: trajectory error, supination error and the number of phases in the velocity profile. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. / Abstract: The teaching of Calculation has been object of diverse questioning in forums in function of the difficulties presented for the pupils in its learning. Inserted in this context, this research has as objective to use metaphors and multimedia resources in the elaboration of the Calculation's didactic material, aiming the improvement in the instruction process and learning in this discipline. The research was based on the perspectives of the embodied cognition, more specifically in the works of Lakoff e Núñez and in the David Ausubel's theoric/methodologic paradigm, entitled Significant Apprenticeship. In this way is better to stand out that this research did not intend to abandon the concepts developed by Newton and Leibiniz on the Calculation, but instead to search a mechanism to help the process of educations and learning on this discipline. The research culminated with the development of metaphors, being that these had been applied in the presentation of the Riemann Sum's contents and the Green, Stokes and Gauss's Theorems, And also to formalize the metaphor's composition, with the definition of a development of metaphor's process and the a tool development for metaphor's reation, storage and retrieval, notes from class and metaphor's elements. To the results validation of this research it was accomplished a study of case, with pupils of Engineering and Computer Science's Courses, where it could be perceived that the use of the metaphorsallows to a bigger understanding and a greater confidence in the learning by the pupils. / Doutorado / Telecomunicações e Telemática / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

The reduction of information overload in hypermedia environments

Sesemane, Moeketsi Jonas 04 August 2008 (has links)
Computers are increasingly used worldwide in teaching and learning. The education system in South Africa also calls for the use of technology in teaching and learning as one of the critical cross-field outcomes of outcomes based education (OBE). In order to achieve this goal, the hypermedia-based learning environment, including Web-based learning, needs to be explored, especially since not many studies locally have focused on this topic. Although many schools already provide education in Information Technology, not all learners are adept at navigating the Web. This study focused on information overload and disorientation on the Web. The purpose of the study was to explore Web-based learning and to develop strategies to enable learners to overcome impeding factors while constructing and representing knowledge in a hypermedia-based learning environment. This, being a new approach to and method of learning interaction that employs hypermediabased learning strategies, encapsulates the integration of technology in education at secondary school level. The literature study was based on the design experiment method, which embraced a qualitative research approach, both descriptive and explorative, and was found to be appropriate for the purposes of this study. The data gathering methods relevant to establishing how e-literacy can assist in reducing information overload in a hypermedia environment were individual interviews, focus group interviews, observation and open-ended questions. The participants were grade 10 learners from a secondary school in the North West Province and their Information Technology teacher. A conceptual framework of the learning programme was created in order to integrate the guiding principles for the design process. The framework outlines how the design process was carried out based on teaching and learning theories, and using a constructivist approach in an attempt to reduce information overload and disorientation while using ICT tools. xvi The content of the learning programme focused on the Cricket World Cup 2003, in the learning area of Life Orientation. Learners were to learn navigation strategies for effective and meaningful learning on the Web, with the help of guided interactive tasks in order to avoid information overload and learner disorientation in hyperspace. The effectiveness of the strategies was also evaluated. The learners’ experiences and feelings about, and perspectives on participating in the hypermedia-based learning programme were investigated. The results indicated that the learning programme – aimed at providing learners with adequate knowledge and skills for navigating in the Web – promoted motivation and enabled learners to successfully construct and represent knowledge in the hypermedia-learning environment. It enhanced not only experiential and independent learning, but also individual, collaborative and cognitive situated learning. The principles of constructivism and OBE facilitated teaching and learning as the guiding factor in both educator and learner instances. However, it became clear that a lack of skills and awareness in using ICT tools to construct meaningful knowledge, as well as being inexperienced in the constructivist approach, could easily give rise to information overload and disorientation. It was concluded that the onus is on educators, instructional designers and developers of learning programmes to equip themselves with the necessary eliteracy skills in order to guide and prepare learners increasingly in the field of Information Technology in education. This is essential, because there is a great need for e-literacy in open distance learning, and as a prerequisite for tertiary education and lifelong learning in South Africa. / Prof. D. van der Westhuizen Prof. M.H. A perspective that cannot be ignored is the question of how to use these technologies to improve the teaching and learning process. One of these methodologies is the multimedia. This study, conducted in the laboratories of the Federal Institute of Informatics Sul de Minas, Campus Machado, MG, and in the José Rosário Vellano University, Campus Alfenas, MG, aims at demonstrating that the use of multimedia techniques, in parallel with all the resources it aggregates, may be a usefull and efficient tool, planned and developed to be a practical source of information collected in a sigle application of study on biodiesel. The Menu strategy, was used for navigation, where one chooses the option of acessing the contents without having to obey any predetermined order. Thus the users will free to access the contents in a dynamic, interactive and pleasant way, according to their interest or need, using audiovisual resources of easy operation and assimilation. The software was available for some students and teachers to evaluate the usability, readability, learning, teaching, multimedia elements, layout and interactivity. In general the software was assessed and satisfactorily met the user s expectations. In a scale of 2-10 points, for all variables studied, the average was above than 8.5 points. The CD-ROM of the biodiesel multimedia is a didactic material developed for educators and high school and college students.
