[pt] RUY CINATTI: O ENGENHEIRO DAS FLORES / [en] RUY CINATTI: THE FLOWER ENGINEER

LETICIA VILLELA LIMA DA COSTA 01 March 2005 (has links)
[en] This thesis concerns some aspects of the work of Ruy Cinnati, a poet whose singularity makes him an outstanding figure in the rich panorama of twentieth-century Portuguese poetry. His poems, as well as his scientific studies, testify to the author s interest and knowledge of environmental and anthropological issues, which are reflected in his political positions. His writings are expos s of the misuse of natural resources and the exploitation of human beings under Portuguese colonization, as well as of the countless interventions suffered by East Timor throughout its history. Thanks to his interdisciplinary scientific training (as a forest expert, an anthropologist and an agronomist) Ruy Cinatti was uniquely able to see man s relationship with the environment. These ideas are clearly present in the poems he dedicated to Timor. In his many surveying trips, Cinatti intensified his relations with the Timorese. This was made possible by his ability to transcend the role of the Portuguese colonizer and to get close to the Timorese to the point of being accepted by the natives as a brother witness the blood pact he celebrated with two Timorese chiefs. His interdisciplinary and sensitive worldview makes his poetic and scientific work rather special and unique, so that Ruy Cinatti has become a fundamental name in Portuguese literature.

Emotions, fear, and empathy: a design approach to human experiences

Polinedrio, Veronica January 2014 (has links)
Fear is an intrinsic human emotion, which produces with variable intensity a bodily reaction as a response to a stimuli. It is considered one of the basic human emotions, and it is universal of all animal species. Despite its subjective quality, fear has gained a rather negativistic stereotype that this research intends to debate and readdress, proposing that “negative fear” is part of an evolutionary transition cultivated by social and cultural constructs. This thesis will analyze the context in which fear operates, employing experience design methodologies and design research to reevaluate the role of fear in the contemporary settings of our societies to prove its connection to imagination, transhumanism and the production of empathy. After a brief historical perspective to situate this thesis in the contemporary framework of experience design, this research will investigate fear as prolific tool for the production of imagination, derived from its aesthetic connection to wonder and pleasure. This particular connection between fear to wonder was investigated among others by Charles Darwin, who also promoted the functionality of fear as the key to animal survival. The complex mechanism in which fear engages us will lead to the production of design prototypes that look at the animal kingdom and several other species’ talents in the detection and implementation of fear as a tool to survive. Here, the potential of our species to further evolve through the use of design will open a discussion on transhumanism and the future of humanity. The last section speculates a counterfactual conditional statement of how our humanity would operate, if emotional identities were reevaluated. In particular, the emotion of fear will be reevaluated for its unpleasant characteristics, from the bodily sensations to the mental postliminary conditions, to understand why certain human behaviors are still exercised, when the physiological effects are universally acknowledged as distasteful. By interpreting the physiological impact of fear, this research will continue its argument towards empathy, questioning what it truly means to ‘stand in someone’s else shoes’, specifically when fear is practiced. Empathy, as a pilaster in the mission statement of many contemporary disciplines, has surfaced in this research as viral phenomenon, which little has to do with truly ‘empathizing’. Here, it investigates how empathy can be experienced when fear is in play: if sharing fear as the bodily experience of someone else can lead to the production of authentic empathy, then humans have a chance to reevaluate its application in the contemporary global topics of war and diplomacy, domestic and public violence, or bullying to name a few. This research ultimately establishes a new perspective on the role of emotions in our societies, and creates a connection between design and the experience of intangibles, producing a view of the intrinsic systems of our being as ones deemed of value in the ambitious evolution of our species. /
The full thesis contains copyrighted material which has been removed in the published version.

From protected areas to ecological networks : science, technique and participation to think collectively the sustainability of the territory.

Vimal, Ruppert 17 December 2010 (has links)
Nature conservation strategies evolve from the strict protection of isolated and devoid of human activity spaces, to the integration of biodiversity issues in territory development. This change in perspective requires the development of a collective management of complexity and a collective conception of nature and highlights the developing relationship between science, policy and society.Based on a multidisciplinary approach, the objective of this thesis was the elaboration of recommendations for integrated conservation. In the context of the advent of ecological network strategies in France, our research concerns both the spatial methods and the socio-technical process which are in charge of the conservation planning. The analysis of these two issues has produced results pertinent to each theme and more general reflection concerning the role of technical expertise in the development of such new issues. We show how an overly technical approach, which notably aims to spatially identify the network, tends to limit the collective sharing of major issues and thus the adherence of the stakeholders to conservation goals, and also provide a reductive and partial vision of conservation issues. In contrast, a position of expertise which accompanies the dialogue on territory favors social learning and leads to a framework for public action which more fully integrates both the uncertainty and complexity of the natural world. The participative process could thus allow tfor a transition from technical to collective expertise as the foundation of public action, which ensures the inclusion of general knowledge and know-how. In this way, the issue is not of a compromise between science, technique and social debate, but of the way that they can complement each other through interaction and how this interaction may be conducted.

Lafleur, Dominique 09 1900 (has links)
At the collegial level, literature professors face the challenge of competence and culture’s complementarily. This project is designed to foster cultural development through the teaching of comparative literature and music based on a problem-solving approach. However, there is no theory of instruction that lends itself to the establishment of such interdisciplinary course material. This research-development intends to develop a didactics theory appropriate to such an approach through a theoretical component and a practical one. To address the purpose of the research, the second chapter presents the theoretical component, which establishes a theory for teaching comparative literature and music through a conceptual analysis (Van der Maren, 2004). In this section, a reference document composed of three parts is developed. The first is epistemological and emphasizes certain issues regarding interdisciplinarity. Didactic in nature, the second deals with the parameters of the processes of transformation and of transpositions applied to knowledge in the context of interdisciplinary education. The third and final part is based on the two that precede it, suggesting points where elements of interdisciplinary content intersect to link literature and music. The third chapter then describes the practical component in detail in order to develop the research product. Building on the developments of the reference document, this section presents the three product specification documents: the knowledge specifications, the pedagogical specifications and the media specifications, according to a research-development methodology proposed Loiselle et Harvey (2009). These documents lead to the concrete realization of the research product: a sample outline for a comparative literature and music course. This outline is divided into three phases: 1) a presentation of general content regarding literature and music to differentiate the two arts, 2) an exploration of interdisciplinary links from sounds, vowels and consonants to the space and temporality of the story, and 3) a written work that requires students to delve into a final comparative literature and music assignment based on concrete and complete literary works. Completing this methodological chapter is an examination of the conditions related to the evaluation of this research-development by a panel of third-party expert respondents for the purpose of discussing the results obtained. This panel of experts includes a university professor, a college-level researcher and an educational consultant at the college level. According to the experts’ assessment, this research-development exhibits a high degree of relevance and innovation from a theoretical perspective. It addresses the lack of an interdisciplinary theory of instruction in comparative literature and music. Moreover, from the practical perspective, the sample outline has proved to be functional, consultable, adaptable and transferable, and it may be used as an example for any institutional course outline template or for teaching sequences aimed at interdisciplinary cultural development.

Zahreddine, Jouhayna 03 1900 (has links)
Problem: In the context of an ageing population and of the complexification of health needs, working in interdisciplinarity became a necessity to give quality care to the vulnerable older people. Advantages of working in interdisciplinarity are known but its integration in the practice of healthcare professionals is sometimes difficult. The understanding of the perception of interdisciplinarity by nurses is an important element for successful interprofessional collaboration, however this subject was little studied in general, even less in a geriatric context. Methodology: The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to explore the perception of interdisciplinarity by nurses. Data were collected with seven semi-structured interviews and one group discussion. Tesch’s method (1990) was used to analyze the data and a representation of nurses’s perception was elaborated. Results: Interdisciplinarity is perceived as a fragile balance process between participants’desire to assert their professional identity and their wish to collaborate and to work in synergy with the other professionnals in the interest of older person’s wellbeing. Participants consider nurses’ contribution to the interdisciplinary team indispensable and that their availability and nearness to patients give them a privileged status making them the pivot of the team. They also underline that the vulnerability of older people and the absence of family caregivers during interdisciplinary meetings urge nurses to act as the older person’s spokesman. They unanimously identify communication as the major element of a successful collaboration. They add that the leadership, the competence and the experience of nurses are important determinants of a successful interdisciplinarity, while the desire to collaborate and mutual respect have to be shown by all the team members to work harmoniously. Moreover, among all potential structural and organizational factors, only shortage of professional resources was identified as having an incidence on interdisciplinarity.

Campion-Vallée, Guillaume 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis explains the creative process behind the “acousmatic documentary” Littorale, a musical work with informative perspectives, which primarily makes use of on-site sound recordings, sound archives and the testimonies of seven informers. Aiming to establish links between the two media practices consisting of documentary and acousmatic music, the work investigates the story behind an impressive repertory of folksongs collected by ethnologist Marius Barbeau in 1918, within a small population of fishermen in Sainte-Anne- des-Monts and Tourelle, two remote villages on the north shore of the Gaspésie peninsula. The composing process is thus divided into three distinct yet interrelated steps: shedding light onto existing but underused links between documentary practices and acousmatic music, investigating the repertory of folksongs and its contemporary rediscovery by the local people, which reveals underlying identity concerns, as well as the composing itself of the three musical movements of Littorale. Through investigating the aforementioned identity concerns and shedding new light on some historical misconceptions, this alloy of two media practices aims to approach acousmatic composition in a way that is both informative and socially relevant.

R. K. Min'jar-Beloručev: autorův systém tlumočnické notace v kontextu / R. K. Minyar-Beloruchev: His Note-taking System for Consecutive

Hamanovich, Maryna January 2016 (has links)
The present thesis is a descriptive theoretical study which aims at mapping Min'jar- Beloruchev's work in the context of contemporary and modern theories and presenting a comprehensive view of author's note-taking system for consecutive interpreting. The analysis of the system forms the crux of this thesis, which focuses on sources that represent the basis of the system, individual features of the system as well as factors that influenced his decisions while working on the system. Other parts of the thesis focuse on a consecutive interpreting training system, that was developed by the author, and to some extent deal with his views on translatology as a science and the interpreting process itself.

Exploring connections in social-ecological systems : The links between biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being in South Africa

Hamann, Maike January 2016 (has links)
A key challenge of the Anthropocene is to advance human development without undermining critical ecosystem services. Central to this challenge is a better understanding of the interactions and feedbacks between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being, which interact in dynamic and complex social-ecological systems. These relationships have been the focus of much work in the past decades, however more remains to be done to comprehensively identify and quantify them, especially at larger scales. In this thesis, a social-ecological systems approach is adopted to investigate connections between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being in South Africa. The country’s high levels of biological and socio-economic diversity, as well as its emerging economy make South Africa an interesting case for exploring these connections. Using data from a variety of public sources, and at different sub-national scales, the thesis first identifies and analyses a variety of bundles of ecosystem service use. Based on these bundles, three social-ecological system archetypes were identified and mapped in South Africa, namely the green-loop (high overall use of local ecosystem services), transition, and red-loop (low overall use of local ecosystem services) systems. Further analysis explored the social and ecological drivers of these patterns, and found the distribution of systems mainly influenced by social factors including household income, gender of the household head, and land tenure. Second, this thesis uses human well-being indicators to construct, analyse and map multi-dimensional human well-being bundles. These bundles were found to spatially cluster across the landscape, and were analysed for congruence with the ecosystem service use bundles. Discrepancies in the expected overlap of ecosystem service use and human well-being were highlighted and concur with findings elsewhere and the ongoing debate in the literature on the impacts of time-lags, indicator choice and scale of these interactions. Third, biodiversity in South Africa was analysed by employing an indicator of biodiversity intactness (BII) at the population level. The BII was found to have declined by 18.3% since pre-industrial times. Biodiversity loss was linked to the potential supply of ecosystem services, as well as human well-being patterns. A potential threshold at 40% biodiversity loss was detected, beyond which population abundances decline sharply. Finally, the thesis examines multiple perspectives on ecosystem services in sustainability research, including the social-ecological systems perspective, and discusses the complementarity of the different perspectives in furthering a deeper understanding of the connections between people and ecosystems. The social-ecological systems perspective employed throughout the empirical work presented in this thesis contributed towards cross-cutting insights, the testing of new kinds of data and the development of new approaches, all of which represent important steps towards unravelling the connections between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being, and contributing to the key Anthropocene challenge of sustainable development. /
At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted.
