Data management plan: Good housekeeping or a bureaucratic exercise? : Data management in digital humanities projects at Uppsala University

Margeti, Anneta January 2023 (has links)
Introduction. Research data management is a topic of ongoing discussion, particularly in academic institutions, where researchers strive to effectively handle diverse types of data. This study examines the practices of research data management in selected digital humanities projects at Uppsala University. The objective is to as- sess the impact that data management plans (DMPs) on these interdisciplinary projects and evaluate the applica- tion of the FAIR guiding principles. It is crucial to consider the researchers’ perspective on this matter. Universi- ties could invest in robust data management practices by taking into account the needs and skills of researchers. Method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using purposive sampling targeting researchers from various departments within the Faculty of Arts who were involved in interdisciplinary digital humanities pro- jects. Eight interviews were carried out with principal investigators (PIs) and researchers. Analysis. The interviews, along with the provided DMPs, were thematically analysed to address the re- search questions regarding the effect of DMPs in the selected projects. Results. The study findings indicate that the PIs and researchers do not perceive the DMP as an integral part of their research work in digital humanities projects. Nonetheless, most participants recognise its signifi- cance and its role could be enhanced in research projects. Challenges typically arise during stages of the research data life cycle, such as data analysis, rather than in the development of the DMP itself. Moreover, the practical implementation of the FAIR principles often poses difficulties due to variations in data types and project goals. Conclusion. The results of this study highlight the need for more actionable DMPs in digital humanities projects and further training for researchers on data management issues. The interdisciplinary nature of these projects facilitates collaboration among researchers in the development of DMPs.

Interdisciplinary and interspatial discrepancies in urban planning : a multi-actor-multi-criteria analysis of the effects of densification on accessibility and sustainability

van der Ham, Jelmer January 2022 (has links)
Density has increasingly been used as a strategy by urban planners to increase accessibility and urban sustainability. Particularly, it has been opted as a tool to achieve sustainable development goal 11 ‘inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements’. Though densification is considerably impactful in realising resource efficiency and transport benefits, its effects are too multi-lateral to be used as a linear tool to realise accessibility and sustainability. This is both caused by the assume d knowledge-practice gap between academics and urban planners, as well as the complexity of interspatial collaboration between local and global practitioners. Particularly, the universal application of sustainable development goal 11 and the top-down approaches to evaluate performance in achieving sustainability hinder strategic interspatial integration. Fostering interspatial and interdisciplinary collaboration would require establishing a holistic indicator framework that acts as a foundation for contextualised project appraisal. Relevant topics were identified and validated by expert opinion to establish such an operationalised indicator framework that could be used as a foundation for practitioners to evaluate the effects of densification projects on accessibility and sustainability. To identify what topics planning actors across spatial scales (i.e., local, regional, and national)and between disciplines (i.e., academia and practice) value differently, the priorities of topics presented in the indicator list were compared by various stakeholders from the Greater Gothenburg region. Comparing priorities and identifying disparities was done using the methodological framework of the Analytical Hierarchy Process. More specifically, a multi-actor-multi-criteria analysis was used to compare priorities. The differences between responses showed that the gap between knowledge and adaptation might be smaller than initially suspected. Differences in priorities between planning actors across spatial scales shows interspatial discrepancies in mainly the valuation of public transport, urban services, and biodiversity conservatio n. Furthermore, notable differences in prioritisation by singular actors illustrate the need to qualitatively inquire certain topics further, including the role of inter-urban employment on transport networks, the incorporation of social factors in quantitative appraisal, the capacity of small municipalities to incorporate contextualised biodiversity conservation, and the role of a varied accommodation supply on metropolitan housing shortage.

[pt] ENSINO DE HISTÓRIA E INTERDISCIPLINARIDADE NO 6° ANO CARIOCA DO MUNICÍPIO DO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] HISTORY EDUCATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY TEACHING IN THE RIO DE JANEIRO 6° ANO CARIOCA

TALITA DE OLIVEIRA COSTA 14 June 2021 (has links)
[en] This research is focused on History education in the class model known as 6° ano Carioca [Rio de Janeiro 6th Year], implemented by the Rio de Janeiro mayor s office in 2011, also known at the time as Projeto 6° ano Experimental [Experimental 6th Year Project]. This public policy directed towards 6th year classes defends an interdisciplinary approach to content and extends generalist teachers work from the Elementary School to the Secondary School. Unlike regular 6th year, where there s a specialist teacher per subject, in the 6° ano Carioca a single teacher becomes responsible for five subjects per class: Science, Geography, History, Math and Portuguese. Considering its duration and consistent expansion in participant schools, this dissertation intends to understand the organization of the 6° ano Carioca system, to analyze this public policy based on teacher perception, and to present generalist teachers strategies to lecture on History content. The qualitative research s methodology was based on semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Contradicting the claim of better educational quality during the Eduardo Paes administration (2009-2016), the study verifies, as consequences of the policy, precarious education, strongly marked by subject hierarchy at the expense of Human Sciences, low investment in continued education for teachers, constrained space for interdisciplinarity discussion and planning, teacher deprofessionalization recrudescence and low performance shown by students from this class model throughout their educational trajectory.

Collaborations between public and private actors in promoting sustainable transitions

von Beckerath, Maja January 2021 (has links)
There is a lack of academic knowledge concerning mechanisms through which sustainable transitions are promoted. Sustainable transitions in the infrastructure system are key to achieve multiple other SDGs, and the infrastructure development gap is particularly critical in developing countries. Agenda 2030 clearly states the importance of joint action. It is, therefore, relevant to investigate how sustainable transitions can be promoted through collaborations between public and private actors. Specifically, how sustainable transitions in the infrastructure system in low-income countries can be promoted. The notion of public-private partnerships (PPPs) was used to describe collaboration, and sociotechnical system (STS) transitions were used to describe transitions. To examine how PPPs can promote transitions in STS, an Ethiopian case study was conducted. The case used was a technical and vocational school called HDECOVA located in Addis Ababa. A collaborative project between public and private actors. The empirical data was obtained from key actors in the partnership surrounding HDECOVA, both in the form of interviews and documents. To analyze the empirical data, a theoretical and conceptual framework was synthesized borrowing from theories on STS, PPPs, the holistic transition framework Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) and Principal-Agent Theory. The result showed HDECOVA has affected sustainable transitions in the infrastructure system, mainly through effects on the labor market and the education system. The results showed that the mechanisms, through which HDECOVA has promoted shifts in systems, are mainly scaling up and decreasing skill gaps. The results suggest that HDECOVA has successfully promoted sustainable transitions by being aligned with identified development challenges in the infrastructure system. On this basis, it can be suggested that PPPs can promote sustainable transitions by affecting regime- and niche levels of the system.

UNDERSTANDING AND ASSESSING INTERDISCIPLINARITY IN HEALTH RESEARCH TEAMS

Nair, Kalpana M. 10 1900 (has links)

Increasingly over the last few decades, funders and academic institutions have promoted the idea of interdisciplinarity as a way of harnessing new knowledge and fostering innovation in science. This dissertation of 4 papers sought to articulate how interdisciplinarity is experienced by health researchers involved in interdisciplinary research and to develop and implement a literature-based, researcher-informed framework for assessing interdisciplinarity. Findings from Paper 1 suggested that interdisciplinary teams tend to be formed based on who can contribute tangible skills needed for answering the research question, however interpersonal factors (e.g. previous positive working relationship) also drive how teams are formed. Paper 2 involved the development of the Framework for Interdisciplinary Research Assessment (FIRA). The literature revealed limited empirical work related to interdisciplinary evaluation, however, a detailed list of issues and possible metrics for evaluation was compiled, and characteristics common to the structure-process-outcome framework of quality were used to conceptualize interdisciplinary health research evaluation. In Paper 3, interviews and a survey were used to populate the FIRA model. Overall, there was a sense that skills, personality, and knowledge were greater considerations than disciplinary affiliation. Paper 4 involved the application of social network analysis in order to understand knowledge sharing in an interdisciplinary team and results highlighted the important role of staff as conduits of information. Overall, findings indicated that though interdisciplinarity is valued conceptually, it can be challenging to operationalize in practice. The FIRA model offers a viable structured approach for teams to engage in formative and summative assessment of interdisciplinarity.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Becoming Undisciplined: Interdisciplinary Issues and Methods in Dance Studies Dissertations from 2007-2009

Bergman, Christine January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to begin to articulate the theoretical identity of the field of dance studies as an academic discipline and to produce a feminist intervention into the phenomena of disembodied scholarship, while asking questions about disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity within dance studies historically and today. My primary research questions are: What are dance studies research methods? And, which research methods, if any, are inherent to dance as an academic discipline? In order to answer these seemingly direct and simple questions, I also question the assumption that we know what dance studies research methods are. In Chapter 1 I first introduce and qualify myself as a dance artist and scholar, connecting my own experiences to my research; I narrate my research questions in detail and describe the significance, limitations, and scope of this project. In Chapters 2 and 3 I provide a history of the disciplinary and interdisciplinary origins of dance studies in higher education and situate that history within contemporary conversations in dance studies on disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. In Chapter 4 I offer an analysis of the National Dance Education Organization's (NDEO) Research Priorities for Dance Education: A Report to the Nation and The Dance Education Literature and Research descriptive index (DELRdi), an online searchable database that aims to document all literature and research in dance education (not dance studies) from 1926 to the present, as it relates to issues and methods in my own research. In Chapter 5 I identify and describe current research methods found in all dance studies dissertations granted from the 4 doctoral programs in Dance in the United States over a three-year period. This chapter begins to articulate the current theoretical identity of the field. I examine and report on current trends in dance studies research methods and draw comparisons across dance studies doctoral programs, setting the foundation for future discussion of dance studies research methods. In Chapter 6 I summarize the project and make suggestions for the future. A feminist lens is used throughout as a way of providing a feminist intervention into the phenomena of disembodied scholarship by asking questions about research methods (particularly the use of critical theory as a method for research and writing about dance) and if or how particular research methods lead to the production of embodied or disembodied scholarship. / Dance

[en] CONCEPTUAL CONFIGURATIONS THE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY OF DESIGN / [pt] CONFIGURAÇÕES CONCEITUAIS DA ATIVIDADE PROFISSIONAL DO DESIGN

ISABELA DE MATTOS FERREIRA 10 December 2012 (has links)
[en] The designer, in his professional practice, finds it difficult to design the conceptual field of activity. This circumstance indicates a lack of identity, even when compared to other professions that have stronger conceptual pillars, for example, engineers, architects, doctors, physicists, chemists, lawyers and journalists. From the research of the especific nature of Design and from the ideological questions that shaped the profession over time, we could understand the difficulty of defining the boundaries. Considering this fact, this thesis delves into an epistemological debate, through the analysis of Brazilian design blogs, questionnaires and interviews with designers, that reflects on how the professional designer is perceived, described and classified by the society and the market, considering specially the theoretical framework involved on Design as a field of knowledge.

[en] EASTERN MIRAGES: MYTHICAL MOORS IN THE BRAZILIAN NARRATIVE-PERFORMATIVE IMAGINARY / [pt] MIRAGENS DO ORIENTE: OS MOUROS MÍTICOS NO IMAGINÁRIO NARRATIVO-PERFORMÁTICO BRASILEIRO

BARBARA DE BRITO ANTUNES LITO DE ALMEIDA 16 May 2017 (has links)
[en] The aim of this piece is to study the construction of the Moor character, presenting it in all its plurality, made up of varied faces and stories. These characters share – among themselves and also with other mythical characters -, both clear similarities and decisive differences. In their hybrid constitution, they stand out as important figures in some traditional Brazilian celebrations collected in field research in the state of Maranhão (the Encantaria of the Lençóis Island and Cururupu) and in the state of Sergipe (the Chegança de Laranjeiras). Its participation in such festivities, as well as their ritual structure, was confronted with equivalent events observed in several regions of Spain (festivals of Moros y Cristianos of the Levant and Andalusia regions). Besides theses patterns, studied in their cyclic performative manifestations, the research examined narratives stemming from different enunciative sources on the theme. A parallel development between field and bibliographical research was carried out, the latter extending into the areas of popular culture, Arab studies, religion, philosophy, anthropology and history. The critical reading here carried out of the performances and narratives incorporated by this semantic-political operator had as main goal to open room for the discussion of other discourses, collective manifestations and contexts, each highlighted by their own characteristics, when correspondences and direct or indirect relations with the Moor characters may be discovered. Such an opening of an analytical-critical space contributes to shed light over aspects still not well known of Brazilian cultural activities, that have crossed seas and centuries and in their continuous transformations, renew themselves defining the meanings, the force and the values of our social order.

[pt] INTERDISCIPLINARIDADE, PARTICIPAÇÃO, COLABORAÇÃO E IMERSÃO: DESIGN E NARRATIVAS MUSEAIS NA CONTEMPORANEIDADE / [en] INTERDISCIPLINARITY, PARTICIPATION, COLLABORATION AND IMMERSION: DESIGN AND CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM NARRATIVES

ANDREA DE LENNHOFF PEREIRA REIS 21 February 2022 (has links)
[en] The objective of this thesis is to reflect on the narrative possibilities and challenges that digital culture brings to the dialogue between museums and their audiences and on the role of Design in this process. We assume that the digital culture that permeates contemporary society has intrinsic characteristics that facilitate the understanding of the museum as an important institution for the cultural development of the population. New possibilities, through the various technologies available, intensify and democratize its interaction with their public. In the study, concepts by Lévy (1999, 2001), Bauman (2001, 2013), Manovich (2001, 2008) and Eli Pariser (2012) about contemporaneity are articulated with the thoughts of authors in the areas of Museum and Design. Design is understood as an activity that, in addition to materializing tangible objects, also focus on the possibilities of interaction between people and products. Likewise, museums should not be understood as spaces concerned only with the organization, preservation and exhibition of artifacts, but perceived as centers that disseminate information and encourage the construction of critical thinking, which maintain relationships with the social context in which they are inserted. A mapping of trends and challenges concerning the adoption of digital technologies in museums is produced. In order to relate the theoretical foundation with practical experience, a field research is carried out, using different methodological resources. The perspectives of professionals working in museums were collected through interviews; and the elaboration and evaluation by the public of an experiment in virtual reality, through a questionnaire. The experiment focused on the digital reconstruction and 3D visualization of a mummy from the Egyptian collection of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, destroyed in the fire that occurred at the institution s headquarters in 2018. The results of the evaluation carried out with 153 users, through a questionnaire, indicate that new narrative forms contribute to expand the dialogue between museums and their audiences; to enhance the enjoyment of their collections; and also to help in the democratization of knowledge. The experiment showed that meaningful experiences mediated by technologies represent complex challenges that require collaborative work among institutions and interdisciplinary teams. The results also pointed out that for digital technologies to be fully adopted, it is necessary to combine innovative creation and communication strategies with continuous investments in the technological training of teams, equipment and management. In this process, the role of Design becomes fundamental in creating favorable conditions for the relationship between the public and the collection to be strengthened. The interviews also showed that Design s potential is underused in museums internal teams, indicating that the Design-Museum interaction still has a lot to be explored. The Covid-19 pandemic intensified the digital communication of most museums with the public, accelerating the process of adopting digital technologies in these institutions.

[pt] RUY CINATTI: O ENGENHEIRO DAS FLORES / [en] RUY CINATTI: THE FLOWER ENGINEER

LETICIA VILLELA LIMA DA COSTA 01 March 2005 (has links)
[en] This thesis concerns some aspects of the work of Ruy Cinnati, a poet whose singularity makes him an outstanding figure in the rich panorama of twentieth-century Portuguese poetry. His poems, as well as his scientific studies, testify to the author s interest and knowledge of environmental and anthropological issues, which are reflected in his political positions. His writings are expos s of the misuse of natural resources and the exploitation of human beings under Portuguese colonization, as well as of the countless interventions suffered by East Timor throughout its history. Thanks to his interdisciplinary scientific training (as a forest expert, an anthropologist and an agronomist) Ruy Cinatti was uniquely able to see man s relationship with the environment. These ideas are clearly present in the poems he dedicated to Timor. In his many surveying trips, Cinatti intensified his relations with the Timorese. This was made possible by his ability to transcend the role of the Portuguese colonizer and to get close to the Timorese to the point of being accepted by the natives as a brother witness the blood pact he celebrated with two Timorese chiefs. His interdisciplinary and sensitive worldview makes his poetic and scientific work rather special and unique, so that Ruy Cinatti has become a fundamental name in Portuguese literature.
