‘Two Schools under One Roof’: How do students of different ethnicities experience partaking in this education system : A Case Study of Gymnasium MostarMarić, Robert January 2023 (has links)
Education is widely acknowledged as a catalyst for social change and progress within society. Contact theory supports this notion and suggests that fostering interactions between individuals from different groups can effectively reduce prejudice and promote peace. Building upon a unique set of data, gathered from 18 semi-structured interviews with students, parents, and relevant organizations, this study aims to investigate the experiences of students within the 'two schools under one roof' system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Specifically, it seeks to understand whether this system has any potential implications on the intergroup relations between Bosniak and Croat students and how their attitudes might differ. Recognizing the limited attention given to student perspectives and integrated educational efforts from organizations in BiH, this research aims to address this research gap and contribute to this field of knowledge. The main findings show that there is a strong desire amongst students for further integration of education and a need for a unified curriculum. Findings also suggest that the school and external actors, except relevant organizations, show no support for such integrative actions. The paper furthermore argues for an urgent need to modernize the current schooling system in Bosnia and Herzegovina by incorporating integrative practices and fostering community-building projects and also calls for urgent actions from policymakers.

No / Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore how the proportion of skilled jobs in subsidiaries is influenced by resource gaps created by subsidiary development.
Design/methodology/approach: This paper develops a range of propositions that connect the constructs of effective autonomy and organisational relationships with subsidiary employment.
Propositions are built on an extensive literature review based on such approaches as the resource-based view, transaction cost economics, network approach, and institutional theory.
Findings: The framework developed in the paper suggests that a higher proportion of employment in skilled jobs in subsidiaries is most likely in cases where subsidiary entrepreneurship, role
specialization, and absorptive capacity are higher. Conversely, the proportion is likely to be lower in cases of increased institutional distance from the parent company.
Practical implications: The conceptual model can help parent company managers assess the likely effects of developments in effective autonomy and organisational relationships in their subsidiaries. Subsidiary managers can assess the possible impact of such factors as development of entrepreneurial activities, specialization within the multinational corporation supply chain and
enhancement of absorptive capacity on the proportion of skilled jobs.
Originality/value: This paper is the first to describe subsidiary development from a skilled job perspective. It further develops the concept of autonomy and introduces the term "effective autonomy".

dimensions of ethnicity; the description of ethnicity and the distinction between
ethnicity and other forms of group identification. Ethnicity was furthermore
analyzed at the socio-psychological level, while the influence of economic, political
and constitutional factors was also considered. Contextual factors during the
investigation which could have influenced the results were also analyzed.
The empirical component comprised a questionnaire survey in the PretoriaWitwatersrand-
Vereeniging area (Gauteng). Interviews were conducted during
January and February 1994, on the eve of a new political dispensation. Randomly
selected samples were drawn of 466 blacks and 460 whites (347 Afrikaansspeaking
and 113 English-speaking). Patterns of ethnic, national and race
identification; the meaning of ethnicity for the individual; perceptions of the
situation of groups and factors that could influence ethnic identification were
covered. The construct validity and dimensions of scales were investigated by means of
main component and main factor analyses. Variance analyses identified differences
between groups, whereas multiple regression analyses were used to determine
predictors of ethnic identification. Important findings were the following:
* Ethnicity was an important source of group identification for blacks as well
as whites. A psychological dimension - ethnic identity - that related to pride in
and loyalty to the ingro11p was highlighted.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among all groups with identity
formation; involvement with and exploration regarding the ingroup; less
ambivalent feelings about ingroup membership and an urge to protect
ingroup interests.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among the Afrikaans-speaking
whites with a positive self-image and among the blacks with a negative selfimage.
Lower educational qualifications correlated among Afrikaans-speaking whites
with stronger ethnic identification. The opposite applied to Afrikaansspeaking
whites with higher educational qualifications.
Perceived threats were associated with stronger ethnic identification among
Afrikaans-speaking whites.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among all groups either with
negative intergroup behaviour or with negative intergroup attitudes.
It is concluded that ethnic heterogeneity should be taken into account in all spheres

Déterminants symboliques et matériels du jugement moral dans le conflit intergroupe<p><p>Les causes du conflit intergroupe sont habituellement envisagées selon deux axes. Selon le premier axe, matériel, le conflit serait causé par une incompatibilité entre les groupes dans leur poursuite d’intérêts liés à des ressources (Sherif & Sherif, 1969 ;Bobo, 1988). Selon une seconde approche, symbolique, le conflit naîtrait de préoccupations identitaires (Tajfel & Turner, 1986). Cette dissertation évalue l’hypothèse selon laquelle ces deux axes sont tous deux sous-tendus par une dimension morale. En effet, les préoccupations matérielles et identitaires influenceraient le jugement moral des membres de l’exogroupe et des membres de l’endogroupe. Ce jugement, à son tour, déterminerait les attitudes intergroupes (Leach, Ellemers, & Barreto, 2007 ;Ginger-Sorolla, 2012). <p>Nous mettons cette hypothèse générale à l’épreuve à travers six études. Les deux premières études investiguent l’influence des principes moraux et des émotions morales sur les attitudes intergroupes dans le cadre du conflit linguistique belge. Ce conflit actuel, opposant Flamands et Francophones, comprend des composantes tant matérielles que symboliques. Ensuite, nous proposons une analyse spécifique des jugements moraux intervenant dans le cadre de conflits essentiellement symboliques. À travers deux études, nous étudions le lien entre identité sociale et jugement moral. La première identifie les déterminants des prises de positions, par des personnes non impliquées dans le conflit israélo-palestinien, en faveur de l’une ou l’autre des deux parties. La seconde étudie la dimension morale des représentations, émotions et attitudes concernant la collaboration en Belgique durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Enfin, les deux dernières études investiguent les jugements moraux intergroupes liés à la dimension matérielle du conflit. Effects of real and imagined contact under conditions of socially acceptable prejudiceWest, Keon P. A. January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this thesis was to examine the effectiveness of contact and imagined contact (a derivative of direct contact) in reducing intergroup prejudice when the prejudice in question is deemed socially acceptable. Studies focused on two populations that are targets of socially acceptable, prejudice – people suffering from schizophrenia in the U.K., and homosexual men in Jamaica. These target groups were selected because they are similar in that they are both targets of socially acceptable prejudice, but also because of their differences in that the stereotypes associated with them are quite dissimilar. The first part of the thesis empirically tested the assumption that the aforementioned populations are targets of socially acceptable prejudice. Two cross-sectional studies, one of which was also cross-cultural, measured motivation to control prejudice against these target groups, and compared it to motivation to control prejudice against targets of socially unacceptable prejudice. I found that motivation to control prejudice against people with schizophrenia in the U.K. was lower than motivation to control prejudice against Black people in the U.K. Also, motivation to control prejudice against homosexual men was higher in the U.K. and the U.S.A. than in Jamaica, and differences in motivation to control unspecified prejudice were significantly smaller. The second part examined the association between actual contact and prejudice for both populations. Two cross-sectional studies, one of which was also cross-cultural, found that contact was associated with less prejudice. This effect was mediated by intergroup anxiety in all cases, and also by fear in the case of people with schizophrenia. Furthermore, I found that contact was more strongly negatively associated with anti-homosexual prejudice in Jamaica, where the prejudice is socially acceptable, than it was in Britain, where the prejudice is not socially acceptable. The third part tested the effect of imagined contact, a form of extended contact, on prejudice against people with schizophrenia. Four experimental studies demonstrated that imagined contact can be an effective means of reducing prejudice against this group. However imagined contact must be conducted in very specific ways, otherwise it has the potential to increase prejudice against people with schizophrenia.

"You Done Lost Yo' Mind Ain't No Such Thang as AAVE": Exploring African American Resistance to AAVEJones, Tiffany Marquise' 18 July 2008 (has links)
John Rickford (1990) states that “80%-90% of African Americans speak some form of Black English”, also known as “Ebonics” or “African American Vernacular English” (AAVE). In 1996, when the Oakland School Board proposed its resolution designating Ebonics as their students’ primary language, many African Americans outright rejected the School Board’s reference and description of their language (Smitherman, 2000, 150). Among them were Baby boomers (1940-1960s), who participated in the debates, and the Generation X’ers, (1960s-1980s), who were informed by the debates. A recent interview of members from both groups show that there is continued skepticism regarding the legitimacy of Ebonics as a language. Their resistance offers much to learn about intergroup relations and conflict. This research explores these components of group identity by examining the in-group language responses to the question of whether Ebonics, AAVE, or Black English is a language.
