Homing-Architekturen für Multi-Layer Netze: Netzkosten-Optimierung und Leistungsbewertung / Homing Architectures in Multi-Layer Networks: Cost Optimization and Performance Analysis

Die schichtenübergreifende Steuerung von Multi-Layer Netzen ermöglicht die Realisierung fortgeschrittener Netzarchitekturen sowie neuartiger Konzepte zur Steigerung der Ausfallsicherheit. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist ein neues ressourcensparendes Konzept zur Kompensation von Core-Router-Ausfallen in IP-Netzen. Core-Router-Ausfälle führen zur Abkopplung der an Ihnen angeschlossenen Zugangsrouter vom Netz. Daher werden die Zugangsrouter üblicherweise mit jeweils zwei oder mehreren verschiedenen Core-Routern verbunden (engl.: dual homing) was jedoch eine Verdoppelung der Anschlusskapazität im IP Netz bedingt. Bei dem neuen Verfahren - Dual Homing mit gemeinsam genutzten Router-Ersatzressourcen (engl.: dual homing with shared backup router resources, DH-SBRR) - erfolgt die Zugangsrouter-Anbindung zum einen zu einem Core-Router des IP-Netzes und zum anderen zu einem Netzelement der darunterliegenden Transportschicht. Damit lassen sich Router-Ersatzressourcen, die im IP-Netz an beliebigen Stellen vorgehalten werden können, uber das Transportnetz an die Stelle eines ausgefallenen Core-Routers schalten. Die Steuerung dieser Ersatzschaltung geschieht über eine schichten übergreifende, d.h. das Transportnetz- und IP-Netz umfassende Control-Plane - beispielsweise auf Basis von GMPLS. Da beim Umschalten der Routerressourcen auch aktuelle Zustände (bspw. Routing-Tabellen) auf die Router-Ersatzressourcen mit übertragen werden müssen, beinhaltet das neue Verfahren auch Konzepte zur Router-Virtualisierung. Zum Vergleich und zur Bewertung der Leistungsfähigkeit des neuen DH-SBRR Verfahrens werden in der Arbeit verschiedene Zugangsrouter-Homing-Varianten hinsichtlich Netz-Kosten, Netz-Verfügbarkeit, Recovery-Zeit und Netz-Energieverbrauch gegenübergestellt. Als Multi-Layer Netzszenarien werden zum einen IP über WDM und zum anderen IP über OTN (ODU) betrachtet. Zur Bestimmung der minimalen Netz-Kosten ist ein generisches Multi-Layer Netzoptimierungsmodell entwickelt worden, welches bei unterschiedlichen Homing-Architekturen angewendet werden kann. Neben dem Optimierungsmodell zur Netzkostenminimierung wird auch eine Modellvariante zur Minimierung des Energieverbrauchs vorgestellt. Um die Rechenzeit für die Lösung der Optimierungsprobleme zu verringern und damit auch größere Netzszenarien untersuchen zu können bedarf es heuristischer Lösungsverfahren. Im Rahmen der Arbeit ist daher eine neue speziell auf die Multilayer-Optimierungsprobleme zugeschnittene Lösungsheuristik entwickelt worden. Aus der Netzkosten-Optimierung ergibt sich, dass durch den Einsatz von DH-SBBR signifikante Kosteneinsparungen im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Homing-Architekturen realisiert werden können. Änderungen der Verkehrslast, der Kosten der IP-Netzelemente oder der Netztopologie haben keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf dieses Ergebnis. Neben dem Kosten- und Energieeinsparungspotential sind auch die Auswirkungen auf die Netz-Verfügbarkeit und die Recovery-Zeit untersucht worden. Für die Ende-zu-Ende Verfügbarkeit bei Anwendung der verschiedenen Homing-Architekturen Können untere Grenzwerte angegeben werden. Zur Bestimmung der Recovery-Zeit bei Einsatz von DH-SBRR ist ein eigenes analytisches Berechnungsmodell entwickelt und evaluiert worden. Damit kann das DH-SBRR Verfahren zur Einhaltung vorgegebener Recovery-Zeiten (wie sie für bspw. Für bestimmte Dienste gefordert werden) entsprechend parametriert werden. / The emergence of multi-layer networking capabilities opens the path for the development of advanced network architectures and resilience concepts. In this dissertation we propose a novel resource-efficient homing scheme: dual homing with shared backup router resources. The proposed scheme realizes shared router-level redundancy, enabled by the emergence of control plane architectures such as generalized multi-protocol label switching. Additionally, virtualization schemes complement the proposed architecture. Different homing architectures are examined and compared under the prism of cost, availability, recovery time and energy efficiency. Multiple network layers are considered in Internet protocol over wavelength division multiplexing as well as Internet protocol over optical data unit settings - leading to the development of multi-layer optimization techniques. A generic multi-layer network design mathematical model, which can be applied to different homing architecture considerations, is developed. The optimization objective can be adapted to either minimizing the cost for network equipment or the power consumption of the network. In order to address potential issues with regard to computational complexity, we develop a novel heuristic approach specifically targeting the proposed architecture. It is shown that significant cost savings can be achieved - even under extreme changes in the traffic demand volume, in the cost for different types of network equipment, as well as in the network topology characteristics. In order to evaluate occurring tradeoffs in terms of performance, we study the effects on availability and recovery time. We proceed to derive lower bounds on end-to-end availability for the different homing architectures. Additionally, an analytical recovery time model is developed and evaluated. We investigate how service-imposed maximum outage requirements have a direct effect on the setting of the proposed architecture.

Būtent ji pastaruoju metu kelia daugybę diskusijų tarptautiniuose bei nacionalinėse forumuose, kurių vienas pagrindinių aspektų – tinkamo Internetinės telefonijos reguliavimo sukūrimas. Pagrindinis baigiamojo magistrinio darbo tikslas – išnagrinėti Internetinės telefonijos reguliavimą tarptautiniu ir Lietuvos mastu, bei apžvelgti su juo susijusias problemas. Darbe nagrinėjama užsienio šalių praktika, remiantis kuria iškeliamos pagrindinės Lietuvos IP telefonijos teisinio reguliavimo gairės. Būtent: telefono numerių skyrimas, numerio perkeliamumas, skambučiai į pagalbos tarnybas, skambučiai kitais telefono numeriais, IP telefonijos skambučių saugumas, bei aprašomos su jų įgyvendinimu susijusios problemos. / The topic of the paper is Legal Reglamentation of VoIP Telephony in Lithuania. VoIP telephony’s nowadays spread and popularity scores an interest and debates not only between it’s consumers but also between legal regulators. VoIP is the main and rather often discussed topic of international and national forums, which aim to develop its proper regulation. The main aim of this paper is to internationally analyse VoIP’s legal regulation and to survey its associated problems. Foreign countries’ experience helps to formulate basic guidelines of Lithuanian VoIP legal regulation. Namely: numbering, numbers portability, calls to emergency services, calls to other telephone numbers, safety of VoIP calls and its associated problems.

Multihoming with ILNP in FreeBSD

Multihoming allows nodes to be multiply connected to the network. It forms the basis of features which can improve network responsiveness and robustness; e.g. load balancing and fail-over, which can be considered as a choice between network locations. However, IP today assumes that IP addresses specify both network location and node identity. Therefore, these features must be implemented at routers. This dissertation considers an alternative based on the multihoming approach of the Identifier Locator Network Protocol (ILNP). ILNP is one of many proposals for a split between network location and node identity. However, unlike other proposals, ILNP removes the use of IP addresses as they are used today. To date, ILNP has not been implemented within an operating system stack. I produce the first implementation of ILNP in FreeBSD, based on a superset of IPv6 – ILNPv6 – and demonstrate a key feature of ILNP: multihoming as a first class function of the operating system, rather than being implemented as a routing function as it is today. To evaluate the multihoming capability, I demonstrate one important application of multihoming – load distribution – at three levels of network hierarchy including individual hosts, a singleton Site Border Router (SBR), and a novel, dynamically instantiated, distributed SBR (dSBR). For each level, I present empirical results from a hardware testbed; metrics include latency, throughput, loss and reordering. I compare performance with unmodified IPv6 and NPTv6. Finally, I evaluate the feasibility of dSBR-ILNPv6 as an alternative to existing multihoming approaches, based on measurements of the dSBR's responsiveness to changes in site connectivity. We find that multihoming can be implemented by individual hosts and/or SBRs, without requiring additional routing state as is the case today, and without any significant additional load or overhead compared to unicast IPv6.

This master’s thesis deals abou the transmission of voice in communications networks. The theoretical part describes criteria for optimizing voice, such as quality of service, type of service, level of service, service type, and mean opinion score. Next I describe the Internet Protocol, comparing IPv4 and IPv6, VoIP, including security, protocols and parameters necessary for transmission. Other part is about neural networks. There are basically described the neural network, Hopfield neural network and Kohenen neural network. The research is based on a comparison of the network without ensuring the quality of service and with ensuring quality of service. Then, there are compared two types of switches. Classical switch-controlled sequentially, and switch controlled by neural networks. The overall simulation program is implemented in Opnet Modeler. The conclusion deals with the creation of laboratory tasks in this program to compare the different systems of ensuring quality of service.

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) makes use of traffic engineering (TE) techniques and a variety of protocols to establish pre-determined highly efficient routes in Wide Area Network (WAN). Unlike IP networks in which routing decision has to be made through header analysis on a hop-by-hop basis, MPLS makes use of a short bit sequence that indicates the forwarding equivalence class (FEC) of a packet and utilises a predefined routing table to handle packets of a specific FEC type. Thus header analysis of packets is not required, resulting in lower latency. In addition, packets of similar characteristics can be routed in a consistent manner. For example, packets carrying real-time information can be routed to low latency paths across the networks. Thus the key success to MPLS is to efficiently control and distribute the bandwidth available between applications across the networks. A lot of research effort on bandwidth management in MPLS networks has already been devoted in the past. However, with the imminent roll out of 5G, MPLS is seen as a key technology for mobile backhaul. To cope with the 5G demands of rich, context aware and multimedia-based user applications, more efficient bandwidth management solutions need to be derived. This thesis focuses on the design of bandwidth management algorithms, more specifically QoS scheduling, in MPLS network for 5G mobile backhaul. The aim is to ensure the reliability and the speed of packet transfer across the network. As 5G is expected to greatly improve the user experience with innovative and high quality services, users’ perceived quality of service (QoS) needs to be taken into account when deriving such bandwidth management solutions. QoS expectation from users are often subjective and vague. Thus this thesis proposes the use of fuzzy logic based solution to provide service aware and user-centric bandwidth management in order to satisfy requirements imposed by the network and users. Unfortunately, the disadvantage of fuzzy logic is scalability since dependable fuzzy rules and membership functions increase when the complexity of being modelled increases. To resolve this issue, this thesis proposes the use of neuro-fuzzy to solicit interpretable IF-THEN rules.The algorithms are implemented and tested through NS2 and Matlab simulations. The performance of the algorithms are evaluated and compared with other conventional algorithms in terms of average throughput, delay, reliability, cost, packet loss ratio, and utilization rate. Simulation results show that the neuro-fuzzy based algorithm perform better than fuzzy and other conventional packet scheduling algorithms using IP and IP over MPLS technologies. / Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND)

Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines Kommunikationsteilsystems fuer das Experimentiersystem CHEOPS zur Ermoeglichung einer Interobjektkommunika- tion zwischen Objekten auf dem gleichen bzw. verschiedenen Systemen. Ausgangspunkte stellen dabei eine verfuegbare Implementation eines Ethernet- Treibers der Kartenfamilie WD80x3 fuer MS-DOS, eine geforderte Kommunikations- moeglichkeit mit UNIX-Prozessen sowie die dort benutzbaren Protokoll-Familien dar. Die Arbeit beschaeftigt sich mit der Analyse und Konzipierung des Ethernet- Treibers sowie der Internet-Protokoll-Familie fuer CHEOPS als auch deren Implementation resultierend in einem minimalen Grundsystem. Weiterhin wird ein erster Entwurf fuer ein spaeter weiterzuentwickelndes bzw. zu vervoll- staendigendes Netz-Interface vorgeschlagen und durch eine Beispiel-Implemen- tierung belegt.

Isto ocorre devido aos ajustes do protocolo Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). O High Speed TCP (HSTCP), uma variante do TCP para redes com PBA elevado, emprega ajustes mais agressivos permitindo, assim, que a utilização da banda seja escalável. As políticas de Gerenciamento Ativo de Filas ou Active Queue Management (AQM), monitoram o nível de ocupação das filas nos roteadores e notificam o congestionamento incipiente aos emissores TCP através do descarte/marcação de pacotes. O sistema de controle de congestionamento apresenta natureza de retroalimentação, na qual a taxa de transmissão dos nós fontes é ajustada em função do nível de ocupação da fila. Os controladores AQM determinam a probabilidade de descarte/marcação para maximizar a vazão e minimizar perdas, garantindo, assim, a estabilidade do tamanho da fila independentemente das variações das condições da rede. Neste trabalho, define-se a política de gerenciamento ativo de filas HSTCP-H2 para redes com PBA elevado que utilizam o protocolo HSTCP. Para a derivação de HSTCP­H2: são utilizadas técnicas de Teoria de Controle Ótimo. A principal característica desta política é considerar o atraso do sistema o que permite melhor utilização dos recursos disponíveis. A estabilidade e os objetivos de desempenho do sistema são expressos e solu­cionados através de Desigualdades Matriciais Lineares, permitindo que os parâmetros do controlador possam ser calculados através da solução de um problema convexo simples. Diferentes controladores foram derivados considerando-se diferentes objetivos de de­sempenho, os quais consideram as características de redes com produto banda-atraso elevado. Através de simulações, os desempenhos dos controladores derivados são avalia­dos e a eficácia do controlador que apresentou o melhor desempenho foi comparado com o desempenho da política de AQM RED. São considerados cenários com enlace gargalo único e com múltiplos gargalos. / Abstract: The efficient utilization of bandwidth in high speed and large delay networks, called high bandwidth-delay product networks (BDP), has become a major challenge. This is due to adjustments of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The High Speed TCP HSTCP): a TCP variant to high BDP networks, employs more aggressive adjustments, allowing scalable bandwidth utilization. The Active Queue Management (AQM) policies monitor the queue length in the routers and notify incipient congestion to TCP source by marking or dropping packets. The congestion control system presents intrinsic feedback nature, where the transmission rates of the sources are adjusted according to the level of congestion inferred by the queue occupancy. The AQM controllers determine the dropping marking probability values to maximize throughput and minimize losses, giving guarantees to stabilize the queue length independent of network conditions. In this work, it is defined HSTCP-H2, an active queue management policy to high BDP networks, which adopt the HSTCP as their transport protocol. Optimal control theory is used to conceive HSTCP-H2. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in consider the delay of the system which allows better use of available resources. Furthermore, in the proposed approach, stability and performance objectives are completely expressed as Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs), thus requiring the solution of a single convex problem for the computation of the controller parameters. Different controllers are derived considering different design goals, which take into ac­count the characteristics of the high bandwidth-delay product networks. The performance produced by different optimal controllers was investigated. The efficacy of the control­ler with the best performance was then compared to the performance of RED policy. The master’s thesis focuses on the virtual local computer network for laboratory usage. It aims to propose and realize proper network connection in order to monitor expected data flow. Thanks to the network analysers (software ClearSight and hardware NetTool Series II) it plans to pursue in detail the used transmission protocols of TCP/IP layers. The most decisive feature happens to be the right choice of appropriate network components and their precise configuration. Consequently, the thesis formulates a proposal of a laboratory task for the needs of students, which is also closely related to the actual problems. The assignment of the task will serve the teachers as a test pattern for measurement. The results elaborated in the form of the model protocol should enable later comparison of the recorded data. Another part of the diploma thesis is the working-out of well arranged manuals for the network analysers involved.

This mini-dissertation reviews present literature to define ICT and SMEs and determine the current situation in South Africa with regard to the use of ICT by SMEs, including possible benefits to SMEs as well as stumbling blocks to adopting ICT. The research consists of collecting data from ten SMEs in Gauteng in South Africa using questionnaires and interviews, to determine how SMEs can use ICT to become more competitive. The mini-dissertation will have a number of chapters: the first chapter will give an overview of the subject. The second chapter will explain the research motivation and methodology while the third chapter will be the literature review, which will explore the topic of ICT and SMEs in depth, with a focus on South Africa. Chapter four will deal with data collection and analysis; the main source of data will be interviews based on structured questions. The fifth chapter will be the discussion and recommendations based on the results of the analysis and the literature review.
