This thesis presents a mechatronics master degree project held at Tritech TechnologyAB by two students from The Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden). It covers a study of the future agenda with IoT (Internet of Things) and the devel-opment of an evaluation framework for designing end devices in IoT systems. Thethesis also presents the leading technical solutions for IoT end devices and a toolfor choosing among available technologies. Lastly, the thesis reports from an in-depth study on power consumption and battery life-span of the two communicationtechniques BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Thread.Data has been collected from literature studies by published authors, company pa-pers and from interviews with experts in the area. This data contributed to thefuture agenda prognosis, the generated evaluation framework and the collected tech-nical information. The attributes constituting the design guidance tool were statedbased on the evaluation framework. The in-depth study was carried out by runningthe two technologies on development boards where data on power consumption wascollected. The future prognosis of the IoT development was found to include 20-50 billiondevices by the year of 2020. The largest design areas appear to be within vehicleindustry, safety systems and home and city automation. Obstacles for the develop-ment seem to be a question about safety and how companies are to create a clearbusiness case out of it. Seven different subgroups of metrics were found constitutingto an evaluation framework and seven communication technologies with compatiblehardware form the basis for the developed design guide tool. In the in-depth study, data on power consumption for BLE and Thread were collected during a simple caseof sensing and transferring temperature data. / "IT WOULD BE EASIER IF IT WASN'T A MINE" : A qualitative case study on the implementation of a connected filter indicator in the mining industry.

Hällestrand, Claes, Johansson, Adam January 2022 (has links)
The extraction of metal and other natural resources has historically been and is still today an important part of Swedish society and its development. To keep pace with demand and at the sametime increase security, more and more digital technology has been implemented into the miningindustry. However, transforming an industry with the help of digital technology is no easy task and the mining industry faces unique challenges to overcome because of the complexity of the mining environment. Against this background the purpose of this study is to describe and analyse the challenges and enabling factors a small enterprise must face to implement Internet of things inan electronic filter indicator in the mining industry. To answer our research questions, we have useda qualitative case study with semi-structured interviews. The results show that the main challengesthat can prohibit an implementation of a filter indicator that has IoT qualities are environmentalaspects of mines such as gas, dust, and water along with challenges of network, connectivity, and power. Further challenges also exist connected to the development and implementation processes where qualified competence and skills are crucial for the success of a functional IoT product. Whatthis study shows are several enabling factors for implementing an IoT product in a specific mining company such as management of servers and data of various kinds, and an extensive network withseveral different connected products.

Investigating Security Issues in Industrial IoT: A Systematic Literature Review

Milinic, Vasilije January 2021 (has links)
The use of Internet-of-Things (IoT) makes it possible to inter-connect Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) into a completely new system. This convergence is often known as Industrial IoT (IIoT). IIoT brings a lot of benefits to industrial assets, such as improved efficiency and productivity, reduced cost, and depletion of human error. However, the high inter-connectivity opens new possibilities for cyber incidents. These incidents can cause major damage like halting of production on the manufacturing line, or catastrophic havoc to companies, communities, and countries causing power outages, floods, and fuel shortages. Such incidents are important to be predicted, stopped, or alleviated at no cost. Moreover, these incidents are a great motive for researchers and practitioners to investigate known security problems and find potential moderation strategies.  In this thesis work, we try to identify what types of IIoT systems have been investigated in the literature. We seek out to find if software-related issues can yield security problems. Also, we make an effort to perceive what are the proposed methods to mitigate the security threats. We employ the systematic literature review (SLR) methodology to collect this information. The results are gathered from papers published in the last five years and they show an increased interest in research in this domain. We find out software vulnerabilities are a concern for IIoT systems, mainly firmware vulnerabilities and buffer overflows, and there are a lot of likely attacks that can cause damage, mostly injection and DDoS attacks. There are a lot of different solutions which offer the possibility to stop the identified problems and we summarize them. Furthermore, the research gap considering the update process in these systems and devices, as well as a problem with the unsupervised software supply chain is identified.

Virtual Commissioning of Robotic Cell Using Cloud-based Technologies and Advanced Visualization System

Ospina Eslava, David Mauricio, Santiago, Avendaño Flores January 2021 (has links)
The manufacturing industry is quickly adapting to new technologies. Some of these trending technologies are virtual commissioning, virtual reality, and cloud-based technologies. This project summarizes these three technologies and aims to create a commissioning tool adapted to the 4.0 Industry. The project’s methodology was to analyse a problem and consequently create a solution that solves it. The process of designing and developing was repeated iteratively, each time an evaluation was made. The final product developed has shown that it is worth spending time introducing the cloudbased technologies inside many applications since it saves time and allows to work remotely. Applying virtual reality to virtual commissioning has proven to add efficiency. At the same time, it gives an immersive experience with a real-time display of quantitative data and the process itself in a visual mode without interfering with the actual production. With these two technologies, virtual commissioning evolves and goes a step further. This project also proved that the user experience and interface in this type of immersive applications need much attention on creating a comfortableinterface that does not fatigue or cause rejection in the user.

Internet of things security in healthcare : A test-suite and standard review

Johansson, Michael January 2018 (has links)
Internet of things is getting more and more popular in healthcare as it comes with benefits that help with efficiency in saving lives and reduce its cost, but it also presents a new attack vector for an attacker to steal or manipulate information sent between them. This report will focus on three properties in the definition of security, confidentiality, integrity and access control. The report will look into what challenges there is in healthcare IoT today through a literature review and from those challenges look into what could minimise these challenges before a device gets into production. The report found that the lack of standardisation has lead to errors that could be easily prevented by following a guideline of tests as those from the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security, or by running a penetration test with the tools brought up in the report on the device to see what vulnerabilities are present.

A literature review on protocol security for the smart home

Lindorin, Axel January 2020 (has links)
This study has examined the problems that arise in connection with the rapid development of the Internet of Things, where the low-energy units lack the power to implement advanced security solutions. Due to the low security and growing area of use, the Internet of Things units have become an attractive target for any attacks. The systematic literature analysis has been carried out by reviewing previously more detailed analyzes of the protocols and their security as well as the developers' specifications. This is to create a wide summary of the security of the protocols and then to compare the protocols to select one or more as the safer protocol for home use. All protocols that are included have some form of security implemented to provide authentication in the form of MAC, key management, integrity in the form of MIC and communication security with encryption. All protocols support AES-128 encryption and the use of IEEE 802.15.4 security suit as additional protection in addition to the protocol's own solutions. The majority of protocols also use Elleptic Curve to safely transport keys. The analysis concludes that Thread and Z-Wave are considered the two most secure home use protocols. It is based on how the protocols handle the various aspects with their noticeable prioritization of security along with the few deficiencies that can damage the smart home. Bluetooth Low Energy and EnOcean are thetwo less secure regarding an IoT environment. The survey also includes a discussion of various areas that emerged during the course of the investigation. Finally, some points that emerged during the review that may be good to consider when developing these protocols with security as focus.

Internet of things and automated farming / Uppkopplad och automatiserad odling

Ahlqvist, Niklas, Jungåker, Jonas, Perrin, Agnes January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this project is to make it easier to grow plants domestically all year round. The objective is to construct a remotely controllable and environmentally independent automated hydroponic system. This would minimize the efforts required by the user to sustain plants in non-native climates. A hydroponic gardening system uses water as a growth medium instead of soil. The system is climate conscious and has benefits compared to conventional agriculture. Hydroponic systems are affected by several factors, this project only focuses on controlling the light intensity by isolating the system, and regulating the nutrient concentration through EC. The system uses a microcontroller for analysis and control. The results are promising, showing that the system works. However, the limitations in time led to a short test period, therefore the data gathered is limited. The discussion based on the results conclude that the system cannot be considered completely automatic but reduces the need of manual labour.

Measuring the responsiveness of WebAssembly in edge network applications / Mätning av responsiviteten hos WebAssembly i edge network-applikationer

Scolati, Remo January 2023 (has links)
Edge computing facilitates applications of cyber-physical systems that require low latencies by moving compute and storage resources closer to the end application. Whilst the edge network benefits such systems in terms of responsiveness, it increases the systems’ complexity due to edge devices’ often heterogeneous and resource-constrained nature. In this work, we evaluate whether WebAssembly can be used as a lightweight and portable abstraction layer for such applications. Through the implementation of an edge network robot control scenario, we benchmark and compare the performance of WebAssembly against its native equivalent. We measure WebAssembly’s overhead and assess the impact of different placement options in the network. We further compare the overall application responsiveness against the latency requirements of an industrial application to evaluate its performance. We find that WebAssembly satisfies the portability and performance requirements of the selected industrial use case. Our empirical results show that WebAssembly doubles the execution latency in a localized setting, but does not excessively impact the overall responsiveness of a cyber-physical system.

Ravichandran, Divya, Thirunavukkarasu, Maneesh Srinivas January 2023 (has links)
In the prevailing industrial revolution, most industries are on the path towards the digitalization journey. To incorporate several digital technologies in the organization data reliability and accuracy act as key enablers. To achieve the set goals, the connectivity of the machines is considered a prominent endeavour. Such connectivity can be achieved by implementing IIOT technology, the connected IIOT architecture enables interoperability, where the computerized machine can seamlessly communicate and transfer information among them. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential impacts of integrating IIOT into the organizational framework and further explore the advantages gained in terms of productivity and maintenance. This intended study concentrated on the welding department in VCE and prioritized specific robots for the research. In addition, to improve the connectivity and visualize the data a customizable dashboard was created to facilitate real-time tracking of the robots and an alert system was developed to notify the problems in real-time. To carry out the study this research was intended to use a particular IIOT software Thingworx from the PTC community. The research was carried out with extensive interviews and personal observation on the shop floor following a qualitative analysis methodology. Through the interviews, the prioritized entities were focused and based on the end user’s requirement the selected data tags were visualized. Furthermore, the findings from the research were analyzed and discussed on how IIOT technology could potentially benefit an organization is presented.
