Education, sustainability and intersubjectivity : exploring the possibility of the emergence of new ways of knowing, being and acting in the world

Chave, Sarah Sian January 2017 (has links)
In this conceptual thesis I explore a paradox inherent in sustainability, namely that to 'sustain' something it needs to be allowed to emerge into something different than it currently is. Moreover, it is not always knowable in advance what that ‘something’ will be. I also argue that education is fundamentally about sustainability, as its role is to allow/encourage a human being to emerge into someone different than he/she currently is. I assert, however, that whilst this is education’s role, it currently, and paradoxically, works against itself by defining the human subject in advance (as a particular ‘ideal’ kind of rational autonomous being), hence closing the matter of what a human can grow into before education even starts. I argue that complexity thinking and what Osberg (2015) calls complexity- compatible thinking, posthumanist/posthuman and feminist thinking provide logics to approach the issue of emergence, including the emergence of what it is to be a human subject. It is through engaging with these logics to keep the abundant possibilities of the future radically open that my thesis makes a contribution to the field of education and sustainability. To make such a contribution I first of all identify that Biesta (2006, 2013) and his ‘pedagogy of interruption’ are working within the logic of complexity thinking. In his theory Biesta identifies how fleeting moments can interrupt existing rational autonomous understandings of human subjectivity. Whilst acknowledging that one cannot programme such ‘fleeting moments’ into education, I draw on ideas from Arendt, Mouffe, Rancière and Masschelein and Simons to encourage the possibility of such moments - moments which open up spaces in which, through acting and speaking with others, who one is as an initium, a beginner can emerge. However, emergence of the new raises the important issue of ethics. I argue that in her two-fold concept of forgiveness and mutual promising Arendt provides a way to develop an immanent ethics arising from horizontal relationships between people speaking and acting together. Finally, I focus on the fleeting moment or event of interruption itself. Drawing on Arendt, Loidolt, Keller and Braidotti I argue that this can be understood as a first-person intersubjective encounter under conditions of plurality. I understand plurality as speaking and acting together with unique others open to the stance one expresses and vice versa. In intersubjective encounters one does not reveal an inner essence to others. Instead who one is emerges intersubjectively, in and through the encounter, creating a surplus, something new that was not in the world before. I also argue how such encounters have the potential to be ethical encounters. I then go beyond Arendt and draw on posthumanist and posthuman thinking to consider the possibility of intersubjective first-being ethical encounters with(in) the wider natural world. I argue that allowing some time for school understood as skholé – a safe space, protected from politicisation by the issues of the day, to reflect and explore who one is, and how one can act in the world – has an important role in encouraging, valuing and reflecting on such encounters. I conclude that education which understands sustainability as an emergent process builds a bridge between education as a sustainable and education as a democratic process. In such an education who one is as a subject appears through intersubjective encounters, bringing into the world the possibility of the emergence of new, unexpected ways of knowing, being and acting essential for sustainability.

Realizing a Conscious and Receptive Heart Community Occupational Therapists’ Experiences of the Therapeutic Relationship: A Phenomenological Study

Van Schyndel, Rebecca 12 January 2022 (has links)
Abstract: Aim: There is limited understanding of therapeutic relationships in community occupational therapy from a psychodynamic perspective. I explored community occupational therapists’ lived experiences of therapeutic relationships with special attention to countertransference. Methods: Interpretive and descriptive phenomenology was used. Eight occupational therapists with experience providing occupational therapy to people in their homes completed two qualitative interviews. Epoche and reduction analysis methods were applied during the thematic analysis and phenomenological writing phases of the study. Findings: Themes related to the therapeutic relationship illuminated tensions therapists experienced between 1) the need to obtain “buy-in” from clients and insecurity regarding their expertise and the potential effectiveness of occupational therapy; 2) self-disclosure and self-protection, and 3) “planting the seed” and feeling responsible for immediate therapeutic outcomes. Therapists voiced difficulty understanding the concept of countertransference but were able to provide powerful examples. They experienced objective, subjective, positive, and negative countertransference. Themes included: 1) fear: experiencing physical vulnerability; 2) sadness: experiencing emotional vulnerability; and 3) frustration: experiencing social vulnerability, all of which impacted therapists’ conscious and unconscious behaviours. Discussion: When reflected upon, countertransference appeared to be a powerful source of information during therapeutic clinical reasoning. It informed the therapists’ use of therapeutic skills including boundary setting, self-disclosure, compassion, empathy, and containment in a diverse array of therapeutic relationships. Significance: Occupational therapy may benefit from a more transparent discussion and acceptance of the emotional dimensions of practice. Integrating a greater awareness and understanding of the intersubjective dynamics of the therapeutic relationship in practice may be beneficial for community occupational therapists.

La construction linguistique de la relation interpersonnelle dans les Lettres de Mme de Sévigné / The linguistic construction of the interpersonal relation in Mrs de Sévigné's letters

Imehrar, Kahina 14 October 2016 (has links)
La valeur de ces formes est à prendre en considération avec le co(n)texte / In this search, I am interested in the analysis of the interpersonal relation such as she is built in a specific speech: Madam de Sévigné's letters. Letters are sent to different addressees. A comparative analysis of the enunciative configurations allows me to clear the various manners to anchor linguistically the coénonciateur (- addressee) in letters. The analysts of Madam de Sévigné rarely emphasized the fact that the letter joins in an interaction, if only because the answer of the addressee was lost most of the time. My work will also consist in repositioning these letters in the vaster frame of the interaction. We know that Madam de Sévigné likes writing, what allows him, among others, to présentifier his addressees, and particularly her daughter, this analysis thus becomes attached to the present various FNA in the letter. The value of these forms is to consider with the co ( n ) text

Les énoncés nominaux en français au regard du japonais / Nominal Utterances in Written French compared to Japanese /

Kurihara, Yui 16 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the noun phrases in written French outside of the context of verbal utterances, but nevertheless referring to the world. In order to illuminate such nominal phrases from a new angle, which have traditionally only been considered with respect to the sentence, i.e. to the predication between a subject and a predicate, this study calls them nominal utterances and adopts the perspective of Japanese grammar, which has not been influenced by the logic of Occidental grammar. In the definitions of Jutsu-tai and Kan-tai put forth by YAMADA Yoshio (1936), — verbal utterance and nominal utterance, respectively — a foundational text on Japanese grammar to which this study engages with, YAMADA defines nominal enunciations in contrast to verbal enunciations as a specific mode of anchoring. Whereas the reference to the world of Jutsu-tai (verbal utterances) is defined at the semantic-syntactic level by the presence of a conjugated verb with its arguments, (Kan-tai), utterances consisting of a noun phrase, which are not intended to assume a specific syntactic role per se, acquire the possibility of functioning as an utterance by the mode of enunciation itself. This mode, called « Yobikake shij-suru yôtai (mode of designation by naming) » (YAMADA), which this study translates as “designation in situ,” is characterised by establishing the relationship between the utterer and the referent of the noun phrase. This relationship distinguishes the nominal enunciation from the verbal enunciation by establishing the relationship between two arguments at semantic-syntactic level.

Narrating Me and the Discourse of Being Dealt With : Student’s democratic inclusion and execution of personalagency through the self narrative in art and media education.

Schonfeld, Ida January 2016 (has links)
This paper is about how students, specifically those who have become marginalized becauseof neuro psychological divergences, depression and one case of narcolepsy, may, by usingself narration in art and media education, promote agency in order to develop the capability ofself advocating. Children must develop a perspective of themselves within society and itssocial structures in order to participate in the discourses concerning themselves as is theirdemocratic right according to the United Nations Conventions of the Rights of the Child.Educators of art and media are in a position to accommodate the intellectual developmentleading towards a meta perspective, by integrating the autobiographical into the ordinarycurriculum. Learning through storytelling is a method that can be applied in both visual artsand media to this end.The artistic manifestation of this work: seven students who attended Nikeungdom, an alternative high school program which does not lead to a degree, were asked toshare their life stories offering insight into how the autobiographical, narrating the self, can beaccessed and why it can be developmentally meaningful. These stories manifested in anedited audio file in which the students told about their journey through the educational systemand their experiences of performing in ways that do not fit inside “the box”. The audio filewas played as sound graffiti from speakers hidden in a tree outside of Konstfack, theeducational institution I attended. This symbolizes divergent students’ exclusion fromrepresenting themselves within formal institutions. The graffiti, subtle and subversive, is alsomade to be played outside of the Board of Education and the psychological institutions thatare supposed to care for these peoples’ development and wellbeing; their social inclusion. Theinstitutions that are in place to form children’s lives exclude these children’s own voices, theyare not enabled to represent themselves. The fact that there was no audience prepared to takethe time and make the effort to listen to the compilation of stories told by these outsiders wasmeaningful for the work. It was also important that the audio piece was not orchestrated as anextravaganza using showmanship to attract attention. It is the job of the authorities, theinstitutions, the politicians, the teachers and psychologists to listen and hear actively, encouraging social inclusion and self-representation within the governing institutions.

Experiências emocionais da recusa ao reconhecimento intersubjetivo no trabalho / Emotional experiences underlying the denial of intersubjective recognition at work

Guimarães, Cesar Martins 10 June 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims exploring the theory of recognition through the paradigm of Castoriadian psychoanalysis and transposing the resulting conceptual framework to the micro-level of work organizations. That objective was drawn as a step to the development of the understanding of underlying emotional experiences which stem from the patterns of intersubjective recognition in contemporary work organizations and was achieved and supported by empirical data. The research was carried out with a sample of fifty labor courts lawsuits through which organizational recognition patterns were gathered and scrutinized in a negative way, i.e., from the refusal of recognition. The patterns of the refusal of recognition were unfolded by the practices and meanings produced by the various subjects comprised in organizational territories. Several outcomes emerged from that analysis. Four kinds of causes came up in the actions of those subjects: the reproduction of social forms of inequality, sexual obsessions in asymmetrical power relationships, personal revenge and three subcategories of instrumental managerial action: body management, subjectivity management and earnings management. Four trends were identified in the temporal unfolding of the refusal of recognition: quantitative intensification (actions directed to the same employee became more frequent), qualitative intensification (actions directed to the same employee became more intense), dissemination (more subjects promote actions directed to the same employee) and complexity (actions from different causal categories were directed to the same employee). Yet, the findings pointed out that distinct subjects interpret those actions differently. Those who are the targets of the actions interpret them as a personal victimization experiences, whereas those who promote those actions interpret them as something banal; inasmuch as the coworkers and costumers who witness or promote them oscillate between these two trends and often give them a humorous sense. The emotional experiences underlying these actions such as shame, sadness, fear and anger were identified and related to the patterns of organizational recognition. The relationships found between them suggested that: (1) the causal patterns predispose the prevalence of different emotions for each category, (2) the temporal patterns makes emotional experiences more intense and complex; and (3) the meaning patterns predispose employees to, consecutively, emotional disconnection, emotional dissonance and emotional isolation

Os filhos da causa / The sons of the cause

Marcelo Henrique da Costa 30 September 2009 (has links)
The political witch hunt consequent from the brazilian military dictatorship (between 1964-1979) has obligated lots of militants to leave Brazil and look for exile in foreign countries. Especially after the Ato Institucional #5 hundreds of Brazilians had to leave their homes because they were in dangerous of being arrested, or physically tortured, or even worse: being wildly killed. After setting up a trip in a hurry, they would take their children - such young children at the moment - with them to overseas, changing their lives for good. This study intends to investigate who those children were, the filhos da causa and which memories they have about that eventful period of the Brazilian history. Based on Social Psychology theories and some other knowledge areas as well we tried to understand how those memories were built and how much intersubjective partaking was produced by a random of different individuals. A partially structured script was developed to interview eighteen people about their memories, from leaving the country in such a difficult moment to arrive in a different place and the setting in process, as well as coming back to Brazil and their opinions about the experience and about their relatives choices. Being supported by the rethorical analysis theories, we also tried to join peoples accounts together to look for convergencies and partaking in their speech. From the Social Memory, where Maurice Halbwachs is the greatest reference, weve tried to link some snippets to find out common gists, built from childhood memories about the exile.
