Biotic resistance in freshwater fish communities

Henriksson, Anna January 2015 (has links)
Invasions of non-native species cause problems in ecosystems worldwide, and despite the extensive effort that has been put into research about invasions, we still lack a good understanding for why some, but not other, communities resist these invasions. In this doctoral thesis I test hypotheses on biotic resistance using a large dataset of more than 1000 both failed and successful introductions of freshwater fish into Swedish lakes. We have found that the classic species richness hypothesis is a poor descriptor of introduction success because it fails to acknowledge that resident species contribute to the resistance in different ways. We developed a new measure of biotic resistance, the weighted species richness, which takes into account that the resident species contributes to the resistance with different strength and sign. Further, we correlated performance traits of species in their role as an invader and as a resident species to predict how the biotic resistance of these communities would develop over time. We found a positive correlation between performance traits: Some species have high introduction success, they make a large contribution to the resistance, and they cause extinctions when introduced but do not go extinct themselves when other species establishes, whereas other species are weak performers in these respects. Thus, the biotic resistance of these communities should grow stronger as non-native species accumulates. These results give us clues about what type of communities that should be most sensitive to further invasions, i.e., communities harboring species weak performers.  My results show that the biotic resistance of communities is an important factor in determining invasibility of a community. They also show that methods for quantifying resistance must take into account how interactions are structured in nature. What determine the biotic resistance of a community is the type of interactions that the resident species have with the invader and not the species richness of the community.

Trois Essais en Private Equity / Three Essays in Private Equity

Ain Tommar, Sara 11 December 2018 (has links)
Recent years have witnessed a lack of momentum in equity markets that has driven a growing number of investors to turn to private markets, including private equity. This manuscript addresses research questions that characterize the changes that private equity is experiencing today: a search for relative liquidity, a quest for superior returns in new markets, and a stability in human capital, which remains an important vector of communication during fundraising. The first dissertation of this thesis examines the impact of the public listing of private equity vehicles on their performance and shows that exposure to liquidity induces significantly lower realized performances. The second dissertation examines the performance of private equity in emerging markets and shows that the success of these investments is related to the geographic distance and the cultural proximity between private equity firms and the investee companies. Finally, the last dissertation of this thesis examines the importance of human capital for private equity firms and shows that manager mobility deteriorates performance.

: En fallstudie med fokus på kunskapsöverföring och gemenskap vid introduktion / Introduction for temporary employees at work - how can it be successful? : A case study focusing on knowledge transfer and fellowship during the introduction

Gothin, Edwin, Östensson, Mathilda January 2019 (has links)
Background and problem: An introduction to a workplace gives the first impression of the situation. The introduction includes activities and processes required to be able to fulfill the work (Arbetsmiljöverket, 2018), but also the acquisition of the social knowledge and skills required in the work (Benzinger, 2016). A former study made by Arbetsmiljöverket (2018) shows that organizations have inadequate introductions for temporary workers. Previous studies have been focused on the shortcomings of temporary workers work situation at organizations. The studies have shown that there are inadequate safety briefings, work security, development opportunities and social support for temporary workers. Aim and method: The purpose of this study was to examine how the transfer of knowledge and fellowship can influence the introduction for temporary workers. The study is based on Knowledge Management, Knowledge Sharing, “medarbetarskapshjulet” and introduction curves. These theories have served as perspectives for answering the study’s problem formulation. A case study were conducted with one company in the building material industry. A total of eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with temporary workers, introduction managers and production managers. The respondents have practical experience of how the introduction is carried out at the case company. In addition to the interviews, observations have been carried out and the company's introduction plan has been reviewed, which provided a broader empirical basis for this study. Results and conclusions: The empirical material resulted in that a developed introduction plan to a workplace facilitated the process of learning the work and getting into the group. The introduction plan clarified who does what and what knowledge that is required, which created both clarity and security for all parties. An introductory manager created a sense ofsocial support and makes it easier to get into the working group.

Estratégias retóricas de distribuição de informação e a sinalização léxico-gramatical em introduções de dissertações de mestrado na área de alemão da USP/São Paulo e da LMU/Munique / Cutural translation: the image of Brazil in Do Outro Mndo, by Ana Maria Machado

Schweiger, Kathrin Stefanie 30 May 2011 (has links)
This study explores the description and analysis of rhetorical strategies utilized in the content-related distribution and organization of textual segments of master theses introductions. For this purpose, introduction texts were taken from masters dissertations of the Institut für Deutsch als Fremdsprache/Transnationale Germanistik of the LMU of Munich and of the German Department at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, each written in its respective national language: German and Portuguese. The corpus consists of 44 introductions. Due to the linguistic contrastive perspective, the findings of the contrastive rhetoric constitute the theoretical basis of this research, together with the genre analysis of socio-rhetoric orientation. In order to determine the distribution and disposal of the text segments, the CARS model by SWALES (1990, 2004) was employed. This model was initially developed to analyze the organizational structure of scientific introductions of research articles. The primary focus of this study is to identify and locate the strategies that each dissertation author uses to present its own work (Swales move 3). Due to a great variety of rhetoric sequences, it was not possible to determine a conclusive organizational structure of the texts in either language. However, a description of the data made it possible to determine primary and secondary strategies employed in the presentation of master theses. Primary strategies include: a) indication of goal setting, b) indications concerning the methodical procedure, as well as c) indications about the structure of the text. Furthermore, it is important for the authors to indicate what cannot be achieved, a strategy which is not considered by Swales in his model and which is essential for the analyzed introductions of masters dissertations. Different production contexts (as, for example, positions with different hierarchical degrees) lead to a different valuation of the communicative goals, having as a result that, for example, move three in master thesis introductions plays a more important role than in scientific articles, in which the indication of a research gap is of great importance. In addition to the identification and organization of rhetoric strategies, linguistic and grammatical use in German and Portuguese was also considered, as well as the use of personal pronouns that indicate references to the author depending on the agent. The intention was to verify in which academic rules the author appears in his texts. The theoretical fundamentals employed were based on HYLAND (2002), STEINHOFF (2007) and SCHMIDT (2010). As a result, it is possible to state that a) the authors of texts in Portuguese do not follow the same model concerning the use of personal pronouns, b) in the German text the authorial presence is frequently hidden behind passive forms c) in the Portuguese, as well as in the German texts, the author appears mainly in the rule of the agent, for example, when indications about the textual organization appear. The results of this work intend to serve as a basis for the production of didactic materials by providing instruments for future masters students to employ in the production of introduction texts in both languages.

An assessment of the development of a cognitive research programme and introductions in zoo-housed chimpanzees

Herrelko, Elizabeth S. January 2011 (has links)
Zoological institutions emphasise the importance of excelling in the areas of animal welfare, conservation, education, and research, not only to better the lives of the animals under their care, but to also influence the general population in the pursuit to conserve the natural world. As a result, zoo life is anything but simple. This research project monitored the lives of a captive group of chimpanzees over a two-and-a-half-year period, during which time we explored four research topics while assessing the development of a cognitive research programme and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) introductions in a zoo: welfare, cognition, public engagement with science, and animal management. The project’s use of touchscreen technology and on-exhibit research was the first of its kind for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo. As a result, the researchers placed a great deal of importance not only on assessing the welfare of the chimpanzees throughout training and testing phases, but also assessing the public’s perception of cognitive research being conducted through an internationally broadcast documentary about the project. In the short duration of the project, these research naïve chimpanzees did not fully grasp the concept of video selection in our free-choice activity, but overall, the introduction of a cognitive research programme did not compromise welfare, and the chimpanzees’ repeated interest suggests that chimpanzees found the research to be reinforcing. Partly funded by the BBC, the Chimpcam Project was shown in the UK (broadcast January 2010) and in a variety of other countries, including the United States and Canada (on Animal Planet in 2011). The broadcast allowed us to gather information over the internet on the wider public’s perception of conducting research with great apes in zoos, to complement data collected on visitors to the exhibit itself. Our assessment of the documentary’s impact on public perception showed that it had a positive influence on perceptions of zoo research, scientists, welfare, and the importance of choice for animals. During this research project, a new group of chimpanzees arrived in Edinburgh as part of the international breeding programme for western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). As the zoo’s focus switched to helping the two chimpanzee groups merge into one, we took the opportunity to apply psychological research to this context, namely the use of video as a research tool and the recognition of the importance of individual differences in response to challenge. The project maintained the cognition and welfare focus by using video introductions (allowing the chimpanzees to watch video footage of the individuals they were about to meet and track the formation of other sub-groups). In addition, personality ratings and chimpanzee behaviour during the visual access period (an animal management technique used prior to physical introductions where the groups could see each other without physical contact) were collected to examine the efficacy of these measures in guiding introductions in order to reduce risk. Personality ratings and behaviours observed during the video introductions could predict the chimpanzees’ behaviour during the physical introductions, however, the visual access period had no predictive power. The welfare implications of the introduction process were also assessed and suggested that: the choice of location (i.e. options of where to be) was more important than the total amount of available space; having individuals removed from your group was more stressful than having individuals added; self-directed behaviour (SDB) performance was context-specific where rubbing significantly increased during periods of uncertainty that were not necessarily negatively valenced; regurgitation and reingestion (R/R) decreased over time; and both in-group members and those of high ranks spent more time grooming others. Overall our data indicate that the chimpanzees coped well with both cognitive challenges and social upheaval during introductions. Despite being regularly studied in captivity and in the wild, chimpanzees have a great deal more to teach us about their world. In order to provide the best welfare for the chimpanzees in our care, we need to understand how research and management practices affect their lives and how the public interpret what we do as researchers. By understanding these aspects of their world, we can better serve those in captivity and influence public opinion on the importance of conserving those in the wild.

Bermond, Gérald 16 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Nesting and migration in the introduced Canada goose in Sweden

Sjöberg, Göran January 1993 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to document patterns in breeding and migration in Swedish Canada geese Branta canadensis, to explain these against the genetic and historical background of the population, and to test predictions of hypotheses pertaining to parental investment. The Canada goose population in Sweden was founded by the introduction of a few individuals in the 1930's. DNA fingerprint similarity between geese breeding in Sweden was on average at the same level as between inbred close relatives in other wild bird species. The genetic variability of the population appeared to be considerably reduced in comparison to that of Canada geese breeding in North America. Dispersal and migration patterns were studied using plastic neck-bands that could be identified at long distance. Most Canada goose females nested at the lake where they grew up. Males were more prone to disperse than females, although most of them still returned to breed close to their area of origin. Geese from three breeding areas in Sweden had different winter distributions, although wintering areas overlapped considerably. Individual geese tended to return to the same wintering area as they had used in previous years. The females' investment in the egg clutch was related to the migration distance from spring foraging areas to the nesting area, suggesting an energetic cost of migration for egg production. Within breeding seasons, clutch size decreased with later initiation of nesting, but only in years with early breeding. A probable reason for this decrease was that body reserves available for egg production were larger in early layers. In years with late breeding, clutch size did not decrease, most likely because late-nesting females could supplement their body reserves by foraging on fresh vegetation. Nest defence intensity was studied by recording the behaviour of the female geese when a human approached the nest. The results largely confirmed predictions for nest defence intensity extracted from parental investment theory. / <p>Diss. Reação à ferrugem de linhagens obtidas de cruzamentos entre genitores adaptados e exóticos de soja / Reaction to rust of lines obtained from crosses between adapted and exotic soybean parents

Espolador, Fernando Garcia 17 January 2017 (has links)
The soybean rust is the main disease in soybean crop. One strategy to overcome this problem is the use of genetic tolerance. This research aimed to evaluate soybean rust reaction in advanced lines (F5:6 and F5:7 generations), obtained in partial diallel crosses between one group of rust resistant exotic parents and another group of adapted susceptible parents of soybean, through genetic parameters estimated for agronomic traits, with emphasis in seed yield. The experiments were conducted in two types of managements: the management 1, with the fungicides Opera & Nativo which control late season leaf diseases (DFC) including rust; and management 2, with Derosal fungicide that controls DFC except rust. In 2010/11, 488 F5:6 lines were evaluated for seed yield (PG) and one hundred seed weight (PCS), the last trait representing the seed size. The 260 most tolerant F5:7 lines were selected and evaluated in 2011/12 to PG, plant height at maturity (APM), number of days to maturity (NDM), lodging (AC) and agronomic value (VA). The clustering Scott-Knott test was performed for all traits in both agricultural years, and the significance of rust effect (EF = difference between adjusted means of managements 2 and 1, for each genotype) was verified through the paired t test. The average combining ability (CMC), selection gain and realized heritability were estimated for PG and EF_PG. The genotype x management interactions were significant for PG, PCS and NDM, showing that the genetic variability oscillated in the two managements. The correlation coefficients among EF mean values were low, although some of them were significant. CMC estimates for PG and EF_PG indicated that the parents who contributed most to the increase in PG and tolerance were BRS-232 as adapted and Shiranuí as exotic, while the best crosses were Orba x BRS-232 and Shiranuí x Conquista. The selection did not bring gain in seed yield, but increased the tolerance. Fourteen lines were promising, since they presented higher means of PG than the experimental checks and tolerance to rust. Thus, it was possible to select productive and tolerant lines from the diallel crosses between adapted and exotic parents.
