New Party Entrance : The case of BE and PAN in Portugal

Morando Costa, Lívia January 2019 (has links)
Back in 2012, Niklas Bolin offered an innovative perspective on the importance of agency for new party entrance. With his doctoral thesis he concluded that the ownership of at least one non-mainstream position and the possession of certain party resources were two necessary conditions for new parties to reach parliament membership. This investigation aimed to test his findings with the analysis of the only two cases of new party entrance in the Portuguese democracy since the end of the consolidation period: the Left Bloc (BE) in 1999 and PessoasAnimais-Natureza (PAN) in 2015. The thesis concludes that in one hand both parties emphasized “unique” issues in their electoral programs. On the other hand, some party resources proved to have greater importance than others for this case: both parties had low levels of membership, limited leadership and considerable financial funds when compared to similar size parties. Finally, regarding media exposure while BE managed to gain some space within the traditional channels, PAN relied solely on social media. As a result, this study corroborates both the current tendency for a decline in the number and importance of party affiliates and the equalization theory regarding the opportunities of the Internet for small parties as a more equal space for party competition.

Lessons about activism from a Swedish high school student : A rhetorical analysis of Greta Thunberg’s public speeches on climate change

Vavilov, Elena - Maria January 2019 (has links)
On the 15th of March 2019, more than 1.6 million students have protested in 125 countries against the climate change effects, as part of the Fridays for Future movement. The manifestations represented the biggest day of global climate action ever taken, according to media outlets. At the core of this movement stands Greta Thunberg, a Swedish 16-year old climate activist and a Nobel Prize nominee, whose actions and speeches serve as inspiration for both students and adults.  With a focus on environmental communication and climate activism, this research aims to find how the teenager addressed climate change topics and how she succeeded in conveying her ideas to audiences. It discusses how the rhetoric was constructed within her speeches, and which of the argumentative elements gave Greta Thunberg the ability to convince the public. The study combines frame and rhetoric analysis with a focus on the text of the speeches that Greta Thunberg delivered in three major international events. The purpose is to observe and understand the nature of Greta Thunberg’s activism by analyzing how the high school student used the linguistic tools and tactics in her public speeches, and to explore a few theories within the text: the issue framing of the climate crisis; the argumentative and discursive techniques that helped her to gain media and public attention.  The thesis concludes that the evolution of Greta Thunberg’s climate activism, from ‘no attention’ to global reputation, is based on grassroots activism, particular personality features, and efficient use of rhetoric devices combined with moral purpose argumentation. / <p><strong>Acknowledgements</strong></p><p>I take the opportunity to thank my Master thesis supervisor professor Paola Sartoretto, from Stockholm University, for the valuable professional support that she offered. The Measurement of Short- and Long- Term Returns of Chinese Initial Public Offerings and the Identification of Corporate Governance Variables That May Explain These Returns

Li, Qiang, n/a January 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationship between the aftermarket performance of Chinese initial public offerings (IPOs) and corporate governance for firms that listed during the years 1999 to 2001. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the significance of corporate governance variables as explanations of IPOs aftermarket performance. By doing so, a set of hypotheses dealing with the relationships between IPO aftermarket performance and three categories of independent variables: corporate governance variables; issue variables; and control variables, were examined. The descriptive analysis indicates that IPOs in China continue to provide significant short-term returns to investors, although the level of underpricing has declined from that found in earlier studies. This finding suggests a growing level of maturity and sophistication in the Chinese IPO market. The analysis of long-term performance indicates negative returns to investors which is consistent with international evidence but challenges the bulk of prior Chinese studies. It is found that there is no significant relationship between corporate governance variables and IPO returns in the short-term with the exception of board composition, while IPO underpricing is primarily explained by the imbalance between supply and demand and the inefficient capital market in China. The significance of board composition can be explained by the launch of the new corporate governance code on board structures in 2001. Overall the empirical evidence shows that the Information Asymmetry Hypothesis is an appropriate explanation of the underpricing of Chinese IPOs. In the long-term, it is found that corporate governance variables do have explanatory power for the market performance of Chinese IPOs, in particular state ownership and the separation of Chairman and CEO, supporting the notion that corporate governance appears to be important to IPO investors in the long-term. It also confirms the view that investors are willing to pay a premium for the shares of what they consider to be well-governed firms in the long-term. Besides corporate governance variables, both issue variables and control variables are also found to have explanatory power in IPO aftermarket performance. In particular firm size, IPO offer price, IPO lottery rate and industry are significantly related to IPO short-term performance in China, while growth in earning per share, firm size and industry are related to the long-term market performance.

Le statut des femmes kabyles autochtones de l'Algérie

Bouzaza, Karima January 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Power- and Performance - Aware Architectures

Canal Corretger, Ramon 14 June 2004 (has links)
The scaling of silicon technology has been ongoing for over forty years. We are on the way to commercializing devices having a minimum feature size of one-tenth of a micron. The push for miniaturization comes from the demand for higher functionality and higher performance at a lower cost. As a result, successively higher levels of integration have been driving up the power consumption of chips. Today, heat removal and power distribution are at the forefront of the problems faced by chip designers. In recent years portability has become important. Historically, portable applications were characterized by low throughput requirements such as for a wristwatch. This is no longer true.Among the new portable applications are hand-held multimedia terminals with video display and capture, audio reproduction and capture, voice recognition, and handwriting recognition capabilities. These capabilities call for a tremendous amount of computational capacity. This computational capacity has to be realized with very low power requirements in order for the battery to have a satisfactory life span. This thesis is an attempt to provide microarchitecture and compiler techniques for low-power chips with high-computational capacity. The first part of this work presents some schemes for reducing the complexity of the issue logic. The issue logic has become one of the main sources of energy consumption in recent years. The inherent associative look-up and the size of the structures (crucial for exploiting ILP), have led the issue logic to a significant energy budget. The techniques presented in this work eliminate or reduce the associative logic by determining producer-consumer relationships between the instructions or by scheduling the instructions according to the latency of the operations. An important effort has been deployed to reduce the energy requirements and the power dissipation through novel mechanisms based on value compression. As a result, the second part of this thesis introduces several ultra-low power and high-end processor designs. First, the design space for ultra-low power processors is explored. Several designs are developed (at the architectural level) from scratch that exploit value compression at all levels of the data-path. Second, value compression for high-performance processors is proposed and evaluated. At the end of this thesis, two compile-time techniques are presented that show how the compiler can help in reducing the energy consumption. By means of a static analysis of the program code or through profiling, the compiler is able to know the size of the operands involved in the computation. Through these analyses, the compiler is able to use narrower operations (i.e. a 64-bit addition can be converted to an 8-bit addition due to the information of the size of the operands).Overall, this thesis compromises the detailed study of one of the most power hungry units in a processor (the issue logic) and the use of value compression (through hardware and software) as a mean to reduce the energy consumption in all the stages of the pipeline.

Political Relations Between Turkey And Albania In The Post Cold War Period

Sulku, Mehmed 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the political relations between Turkey and Albania in the post Cold War period. Political and diplomatic relations between Turkey and Albania based on mutual respect for territorial integrity and independence. This study analyzes the continuities and changes in the Turkish foreign policy towards Albania in the post Cold War era. Also changes and continuities in the Albanian foreign policy in the post Cold War period are scrutinized. This work examines the main Turkish foreign policy approaches towards Albania. Patterns of Turkish Balkan policy are examined to find out how Turkey constructed its foreign policy towards Albania after the end of Cold War. Turkey continued its traditional foreign policy according to realist and national interest-based foreign policy formulation. After 1990, Albania was in a period of a transition from its sui generis communist dictatorship regime under Enver Hoxha to an emerging democracy. Albania considered Turkey as a reliable ally in the Balkans. Turkey attached strong importance to stability and security in the Balkan region. Albania has significant role to play in Balkan region. Thus Turkey welcomed the Albanian decision on membership application to NATO and EU. Turkey tried to strength its bilateral relations with Albania and supported lbania&rsquo / s participation in regional and international organizations. This study focuses on the relations of Turkey and Albania within the framework of international and regional organizations.

The Study of Sovereignty Between R.O.C. and P.R.C.

Shen, Parkes-C.Y. 26 December 2000 (has links)
In july 1999, the former President Lee of R.O.C. made a response to questions submitted by the reporter of Deutsche Welle radio station from German. Lee brought up an idea that the cross-strait relationship is "as a state-to-state relationship or at least a special state-to-state relationship." Thus, the statement caused different reflection from internal and international. The statement of "a special state-to-state relationship" that represents in sovereignty and the statehood between the cross-strait relationship abandons the "one China" principle that R.C.C.insisted in the past but differs from the view of P.R.C.. Certainly, P.R.C. criticized such kind of statement that violates "one China" principle and blocks the process of the national unification.Soon, P.R.C. unilaterally declared the fundation of the exchange and the discussion not existed any more. After a series of verbally disparaged and militarily intimidated from P.R.C. and not supported from U.S.A. government, R.O.C. has obviously shrunken back in the statement of "a special state-to-state relationship".Even after the D.D.P. which was definded independential party won the president campain of 2000, the president elect Cheng didn't show out his view of suportting "a special state-to-state relationship" and amending constitution and as soon as possible that brought up before the president campain. Therefor, in the process after bringing up "a special state-to-state relationship", it show out an epitome of the sovereignty conflict between the cross-strait. In fact, the statement of sovereignty that the R.O.C government declared from 1949 had been suppressed by P.R.C.. In the international politics, it bulges out the difficult position of R.O.C.'s sovereignty. The thesis, "the sovereignty between R.O.C. and P.R.C.", investigates the sovereignty issue between the cross-strait from 1949 to 2000. It founds on an approach of international politics and international law. Though sovereignty is the issue of international law. But the thesis supposes an idea that the sovereignty issue between the cross-strait is an political issue more than a legal. The thesis would prove this view by describing the international political events and bringing up a series of international contracts, official proclamation of the sovereignty issue between the cross-strait from 1949.So, the conclusion of the thesis would bring up a point, that is the difficult position of R.O.C.'s sovereignty.

Analysis of high performance interconnect in SoC with distributed switches and multiple issue bus protocols

Narayanasetty, Bhargavi 26 July 2011 (has links)
In a System on a Chip (SoC), interconnect is the factor limiting Performance, Power, Area and Schedule (PPAS). Distributed crossbar switches also called as Switching Central Resources (SCR) are often used to implement high performance interconnect in a SoC – Network on a Chip (NoC). Multiple issue bus protocols like AXI (from ARM), VBUSM (from TI) are used in paths critical to the performance of the whole chip. Experimental analysis of effects on PPAS by architectural modifications to the SCRs is carried out, using synthesis tools and Texas Instruments (TI) in house power estimation tools. The effects of scaling of SCR sizes are discussed in this report. These results provide a quick means of estimation for architectural changes in the early design phase. Apart from SCR design, the other major domain, which is a concern, is deadlocks. Deadlocks are situations where the network resources are suspended waiting for each other. In this report various kinds of deadlocks are classified and their respective mitigations in such networks are provided. These analyses are necessary to qualify distributed SCR interconnect, which uses multiple issue protocols, across all scenarios of transactions. The entire analysis in this report is carried out using a flagship product of Texas Instruments. This ASIC SoC is a complex wireless base station developed in 2010- 2011, having 20 major cores. Since the parameters of crossbar switches with multiple issue bus protocols are commonly used in SoCs across the semiconductor industry, this reports provides us a strong basis for architectural/design selection and validation of all such high performance device interconnects. This report can be used as a seed for the development of an interface tool for architects. For a given architecture, the tool suggests architectural modifications, and reports deadlock situations. This new tool will aid architects to close design problems and bring provide a competitive specification very early in the design cycle. A working algorithm for the tool development is included in this report. / text
