Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is primarily concerned with responsible and considerate interpretations of the Bible as sacred book in faith communities. The question of poverty and its related issues compelled me to ask the question: how can the gospels be good news for Christians in impoverished communities in South Africa? It is the opinion of this study that method of interpretation is the crux of the matter when it comes to extracting good news from the Bible. In chapter one I propose that a social scientific approach in combination with feminist hermeneutics is a good method of interpreting biblical texts in impoverished communities. The social sciences help to place the text in its proper context and give the reader a point of connection between his or her social location and that of the text. Feminist hermeneutics seeks the marginalised and silent voices in the text with the aim of transformation on the contemporary context. In the second chapter of this study I explore the vital social values of the first century AD Mediterranean world as premise of the selected texts for exegesis (Luke 1:39-56 and 4:16-30). The third and fourth chapters form the exegetical corps of the study. In both I look at how the social values identified in chapter two influenced and shaped the texts. The latter part of both these chapters looks at a very specific feminist hermeneutical model which ultimately seeks transformation. Chapter three deals with Luke 1: 39-56 as pericope whilst chapter four deals with Luke 4:16-30. Chapter five focuses on the correlation of the findings in the exegesis of chapter three and chapter four. This chapter also gives some implications with concrete examples of a way forward from the interpretation of the text to the application of the text. I propose a Christian development of communities as a possible consequence of reading and interpreting the Bible through the lenses of a social scientific approach in conjunction with feminist hermeneutics. The last chapter, chapter six, is an overview and conclusion to this study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is hoofsaaklik gemoeid met verantwoordelike en bedagsame interpretasies van die Bybel as die heilige boek in geloof-gemeenskappe. Die kwessie van armoede en verwante kwessies het my genoop om die vraag te vra: hoe kan die evangelies goeie nuus wees vir Christene in arm gemeenskappe in Suid-Afrika? Dit is die mening van hierdie studie dat die metode van interpretasie die kern van die saak is in die ontsluiting van goeie nuus uit die Bybel. In hoofstuk een stel ek voor dat 'n sosiaal-wetenskaplike benadering in kombinasie met feministiese hermeneutiek 'n goeie metode vir die interpretasie van Bybelse tekste is in verarmde gemeenskappe. Die sosiale wetenskappe help om die teks in sy behoorlike konteks te plaas en gee die leser 'n punt van verband tussen sy of haar sosiale ligging en dié van die teks. Feministiese hermeneutiek soek die gemarginaliseerde en stil stemme in die teks met die doel van transformasie in die hedendaagse konteks. In die tweede hoofstuk van hierdie studie ondersoek ek die belangrike sosiale waardes van die eerste eeu nC Mediterreense wêreld as uitgangspunt vir eksegese van die geselekteerde tekste (Lukas 1:39-56 en 4:16-30). Die derde en vierde hoofstukke vorm die eksegetiese korps van die studie. In albei het ek gekyk na hoe die sosiale waardes wat in hoofstuk twee geidentifiseer word, hierdie tekste beïnvloed en gevorm het. Die laaste deel van beide hierdie hoofstukke kyk na 'n baie spesifieke feministiese hermeneutiese model wat uiteindelik tot transformasie lei. Hoofstuk drie handel oor Lukas 1: 39-56 as perikoop, terwyl hoofstuk vier oor Lukas 4:16-30 handel. Hoofstuk vyf fokus op die korrelasie van die bevindinge in die eksegese van hoofstuk drie en hoofstuk vier. Hierdie hoofstuk gee ook 'n paar implikasies met konkrete voorbeelde van 'n pad vorentoe vanaf die interpretasie van die teks tot die toepassing van die teks. Ek stel 'n Christelike ontwikkeling van gemeenskappe voor as 'n moontlike uitkoms van die lees en interpretasie van die Bybel deur die lens van 'n sosiaal-wetenskaplike benadering in samehang met feministiese hermeneutiek. Illegitimate relationship of Přemysl Otakar II. and Anežka of Kuenring in the context of Přemysl's Austrian politics in the 1250s Hana Trachtová 2010 The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the private life of Přemysl Otakar II. was interconnected with his political activities in the 1250s. The assumption is that choosing Anežka of Kuenring as the king's mistress was not accidental, but that it was motivated, among other reasons, also politically. The work covers development of Bohemian-Austrian relations in the Middle Ages up to the early 1260s. It follows the progress of the struggle for the Babenberg heritage as well as other Přemysl's activities in the 1250s. It links Přemysl's political acts to his family issues and it also deals with his relation to the Kuengring family. Attention is also devoted to Přemysl's offspring born out of wedlock, his effort to legitimize three of them and to their further life stories.

Les diverses branches furent animées par quelques personnagesprestigieux, comme Jean de Vienne, amiral de France. Elle s'unit à Rodolphe de Hochberg, issu d'une puissantefamille de Forêt Noire, et devenu comte de Neuchâtel en succession de son cousin Jean,comte de Fribourg et maréchal de Bourgogne. The various branches were animated by some famous characterslike Jean de Vienne, admiral of France. Three facts: the death of Admiral (Nicopolis, 1396),the fabulous legacy of his brother Huguenin, and robust health, allowed William to assertitself as "leader" of the House of Vienna. He distinguished himself by service multiforme(military, diplomatic, counseling) from the Dukes of Burgundy, Philip the Bold, John theFearless and Philip the Good, from 1379 to his death, and by careful management of hisimmense estates with the Duchy (almost all Bresse louhannaise; Arc-en-Barrois, probably thefirst Income duchois lands), and the county, which must be added two hotels in Dijon andParis. Olivier de la Marche spread the fame of Guillaume de Vienne "Grand" and "wisdom."His two successive wives brought him into prestigious families: Thoire-Villars (allied to theCounts of Geneva) and Dolphins Auvergne. On the battlefield and as a diplomat, the "lord ofSaint George" achieved fame and stardom: from Scotland to Mahdia (in present-day Tunisia),from Normandy to Milan, he established himself as a high part of the Burgundian State ingestation. Loaded with honors by the Dukes (order of the Golden Tree in 1403, the firstknight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1430), receiving the highest pension (3000 francs/ year), intimate the sovereign, he was also an active member of the Grand Council of Royaland Governor of the two Burgundies, he distinguished himself in the Crusades (Mahdia,1390), in the service of the Church (familiar Clement VII head of the embassy Burgundy theCouncil of Constance (1415), benefactor of Colette of Corbie to the founding of severalmonasteries) and was the last Bourguignon which John the Fearless spoke on the bridge ofMontereau (1419). His second wife bore him a son, also named William, and lord of Saint-Georges and St. Croix in the death of his father - which was a problem in more than onehistorian. This character provided a solid background, but also military intellectual (sent in"Germany" to learn the language), had a startling rise in the lifetime of his father, in theservice of John the Fearless and Philip the Good. No less startling was from 1440, thesquandering of movable and immovable property of the "Comte de Saint-George" the newGuillaume de Vienne and his son John, who led, it seems, a dissolute life, and fell into thesnares of multiple riders, primarily the "forensic people and finances." Vienna Marguerite,sister of John, was very close to marrying the Count of Eu, brother of Philip the Good. Shejoins Rudolph Hochberg, from a powerful family in the Black Forest, and became Count ofNeuchâtel in succession to his cousin John, Count of Burgundy and Marshal of Fribourg.Marguerite and Rudolf joined forces and managed to rebuild much of the stately heritage"Guillaume Grand Vienna", they transmitted to their son Philippe, famous for his service toCharles the Bold and Louis XI. Philippe's daughter, Jeanne de Hochberg, by his marriagebrought the family legacy of Orleans-Longueville. Other branches "Vienna" went out, butsuch a study would emerge from the shadows of the characters in this House, as Guillaume deVienne, lord of Montby and Montbis (d. 1471), the Vienna lords Listenois (Bourbonnais),without forgetting Girard (d. 1545), lord of Commarin, founder of the Vienna Chapel of theSainte-Chapelle in Dijon

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis analyzes factors related to academic, military and personal backgrounds that affect graduation of students enrolled at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). The data in this thesis were taken from DLIFLC and only students from the four principal services with valid DLAB scores were considered for this study. Also, as DLI is concerned with students who do not make the grade academically, entries having administrative attritions were not considered. Four logistic regression models were analyzed for the purposes of this study: Graduation of students across all four categories of languages taught at DLIFLC, graduation of students in Category I languages, graduation of students in Category III languages and graduation of students in Category IV languages. The results of this study can assist DLIFLC in investing its resources in students with the best chances of success and assist the staff in identifying the weaker students from the onset of the course. / Major, Republic of Singapore Air Force

Background: Rates of accidental overdose mortality from substance use disorder (SUD) have risen dramatically in the United States since 1990. Between 1999 and 2004 alone rates increased 62% nationwide, with rural overdose mortality increasing at a rate 3 times that seen in urban populations. Cultural differences between rural and urban populations (e.g., educational attainment, unemployment rates, social characteristics, etc.) affect the nature of SUD, leading to disparate risk of overdose across these communities. Methods: Multiple-groups latent class analysis with covariates was applied to data from the 2011 and 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n=12.140) to examine potential differences in latent classifications of SUD between rural and urban adult (aged 18 years and older) populations. Nine drug categories were used to identify latent classes of SUD defined by probability of diagnosis within these categories. Once the class structures were established for rural and urban samples, posterior membership probabilities were entered into a multinomial regression analysis of socio-demographic predictors' association with the likelihood of SUD latent class membership. Results: Latent class structures differed across the sub-groups, with the rural sample fitting a 3-class structure (Bootstrap Likelihood Ratio Test P value=0.03) and the urban fitting a 6-class model (Bootstrap Likelihood Ratio Test P valueThis result supports the hypothesis that different underlying elements exist in the two populations that affect SUD patterns, and thus can inform the development of surveillance instruments, clinical services, and prevention programming tailored to specific communities.

The "Mark V" Holographic Video Monitor ("HoloMonitor") is a continuation of effort and accomplishments to produce a low-cost device capable of reproducing true full-color horizontal-parallax-only computer-generated holograms at typical video frame-rates. While other devices around the world may have greater capabilities, these devices are currently confined to laboratory settings due to their sheer complexity and expense. The aim of this project is to provide researchers and "tinkerers" with a device capable of recreating holographic effects in full color, respectable resolution, in real time, and at a comparatively low cost. The "Mark V" HoloMonitor is a closer representation of a consumer product than any other device of the MIT/BYU series of HoloMonitors. In this thesis, I discuss the complete design and construction of all of the optic (sans modulator) electronic subsystems that compose this device, along with explaining and providing working code needed to drive it in various modes of operation. The main objective of this thesis is to sufficiently instruct undergraduate and graduate colleagues so that they can replicate and build upon this work.
