Failing at College Football Reform: The Jan Kemp Trial at the University of GeorgiaFulford, Michael John 02 October 2009 (has links)
Throughout the history of college football, there have been efforts to reform the system and stop improprieties, yet conflict between gaining academic and athletic prowess at colleges remained a central theme. In the 1980s, the Jan Kemp trial involving the University of Georgia demonstrated this clash between revenue-generating athletics and academic integrity. This historical study is an in-depth analysis of archives, legal documents, interviews, and other textual evidence that demonstrated how the factors surrounding the Jan Kemp case evolved and how key administrators and faculty members reacted to pressure related to academic and athletic conflicts. An analysis of past reform efforts in college football identified presidential control, commercialization of athletics, and corruption of the student-athlete ideal through preferential treatment as the key issues universities must address in relation to their football programs. An analysis of the University of Georgia in relation to these issues showed that pressure to increase revenue from football led to a lack of presidential control over academic-athletic conflicts and allowed preferential treatment of athletes to persist at the expense of academic integrity.

VR som verktyg i kommunal fysisk planering av offentliga platser / VR as a tool for municipalities in spatial planning of public spaceNilsson, Max January 2018 (has links)
The process of digitalizing our society is in full swing and the Swedish government has set its sight on Sweden being the spearhead of development and innovation in the field. There is great demand for digital solutions among Swedish citizens and most branches of industry are making investments to answer it. What this means for spatial planning is, among other things, that new technical solutions should be explored to keep up with citizens demands regarding participatory planning today and in the future. The purpose of this thesis has been to explore virtual reality technology’s potential and application in municipalities spatial planning. With point of departure in Jan Gehl’s “12 quality criteria for public space” a case study was performed on Nättraby center in Karlskrona municipality. This was followed by a plan proposal constructed in 3D with a documented design process and work methodology for working with VR in spatial planning. Gehl’s method was then applied in the virtual environment where officials from Karlskrona municipality evaluated the plan proposal. The purpose of the method for analyzing public space was to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the technology to create a discussion with officials from Karlskrona municipality, through an interview, about where VR is best used and how spatial planning proposals should be visualized to fulfill the municipality’s intent with using the technology. The results showed that the analysis method “12 quality criteria for public space” proved to be applicable in a virtual environment, but some of the criteria were easier to evaluate than others. Criteria related to scale, space and relation between volumes deemed easiest to evaluate. Criteria related to actual movement and senses that were not simulated like sound and touch were deemed harder to evaluate, but their lack of representation did not hinder the planning officials to evaluate the criteria. In the design of planning proposals for VR the officials emphasized the need to communicate to its citizens that the proposal was changeable and discuss the importance of the relation between level of detail and the proposals communicative intent.

Costume albums in Charles V's Habsburg Empire (1528-1549)Bond, Katherine Louise January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the development of the costume book in the rapidly globalising world of the sixteenth century, concentrating on two costume albums produced in the second quarter of the sixteenth century and whose owners and creators shared close ties to the imperial court of Habsburg ruler and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (r. 1519-56). These richly illustrated albums were among the first known and surviving attempts to make sense of cultural difference by compiling visual information about regional clothing customs in and around Europe and further abroad. Their method of codifying sartorial customs through representative costume figures became a prevailing method through which to examine human difference on an increasingly vast and complex geo-political stage. Yet to have been satisfactorily investigated is the significant role that Habsburg networks and relationships played in shaping these costume albums and their ethnographic interests. The Trachtenbuch, or costume album, of Augsburg portrait medallist Christoph Weiditz (c. 1500-59) is a primary example, constituting a work of keen ethnographic observation which depicts customs and cultures largely witnessed first-hand when the artist travelled to Charles V’s Spanish court in 1529. Of equal interest is the second primary example of this dissertation, the costume album of Christoph von Sternsee (d. 1560) the captain of Charles V’s German Guard. Sternsee’s album, introduced to scholarship for the first time in this study, illustrates diverse cultures and costumes encountered across the imperial Habsburg lands and its neighbours. The emperor’s far-reaching sovereignty propelled Christoph Weiditz and Christoph von Sternsee across the Habsburg lands as they each attempted to benefit their careers and gain prestige from imperial patronage. Their costume albums testify to an empire that encouraged interactions between ambassadors, agents, merchants, military officers, and courtly elite of diverse cultural backgrounds, against a backdrop of shared political, religious, commercial, and military interests. This milieu facilitated the transfer of knowledge and developed methods of visual communication and human representation that were shared and reciprocally recognised.

V žáru královské lásky / The Flames of Royal LoveBokšteflová, Lucie January 2015 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is a project by film director Jan Němec (born 1936) whose intent was to create a film adaptation of the novel The Sufferings of Prince Sternenhoch written in the 1920s by writer and philosopher Ladislav Klíma (1878-1928). The thesis presents individual segments of this project - from the source material to the script and directorial concept created in the '60s, through individual phases of the film's development and production in the '90s to reactions after its release in 1991. Emphasis is placed on the thoughts and attitudes of Němec himself. The thesis' main sources were the archives of Barrandov Studio as well as interviews with Němec, both public and non-public. The goal of the thesis is to convey information about the project as a whole and thus provide a deeper insight into this particular piece of Němec's creative output.

Analýza dvou latinských překladů Husovy České nedělní postily v rkp. Brno, Moravská zemská knihovna, Mk 56 a Mk 91 a jejich částečná edice Analysis of Two Latin Translations of Hus' Czech Sunday Postil in Mss. Brno, Moravian Library, Mk 56 and Mk 91 and their Partial Edition Mgr. Jan Odstrčilík Annotation This study examines two unedited Latin versions of Jan Hus's Czech Sunday Postil, which are preserved in mss. Mk 91 and Mk 56 in the Moravian library in Brno, Czech Republic. The primary analysis is of ms. Mk 91, which provides a faithful, or even word-for-word, translation of the Czech original, edited by Jiří Daňhelka, but still contains a number of Czech words. This multilingual characteristic is studied in the context of macaronic sermon literature. Methodological problems and approaches in this field are discussed (authorship, types of bilingualism, performance of bilingual sermons), alongside three Latin-Czech macaronic sermon collections: the Quadragesimale admontskému, Hus's Sermons from the Bethlehem chapel, and the postills of Michal Polák also called the Sermones de sanctis latino-bohemici. Both the language and the contents of Mk 91 are studied in this work. In the part concerning the language, various problems are presented with which a translator had to deal (different system of cases in the...

Vytváření písňového kánonu v rukopisných kancionálech 17. a 18. století / The process of forming a song canon in 17th and 18th century hand-written hymn-booksSmyčková, Kateřina January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation thesis follows on the contemporary research focused on the early modern manuscript culture. The thesis deals with the Moravian manuscript hymnals from the 17th and 18th century and with their repertoire. The manuscript hymnography is one of the richest sources for an understanding of the popular piety, the Baroque literature and the church music. Some of the hymnals are accompanied by musical notation and a large number of them are beautiful illuminated. However, they have never been made accessible through modern edition, and there are hardly any analytical studies concerning these hymnbooks. The opening chapter summarizes the existing research on the given topic. It is followed by the description of approximately forty manuscript hymnals. The next chapter concentrates on some specific qualities of the manuscript publication and focuses on the song repertoire. The third chapter further develops the general theses. It is devoted to four manuscript hymnals from the sixties and the seventies of the 17th century. The analysis of their writing, ilumination and repertoire proves the same author - Jan Klabík from Želechovice. This chapter concentrates on the song repertoire, relations to older hymnals and the song canon. The fourth chapter focuses on two specific groups of songs: the...
