Quelques aspects géométriques et analytiques des domaines bornés symétriques réels / Some geometric and analytic aspects of real bounded symmetric domains

Oliveira Da Costa, Fernando de 19 October 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we are interested in geometric problems related with \emph{real bounded symmetric domains}. These spaces are Riemannian symmetric spaces $\mathcal{D}=G/K$ of noncompact type, constructed from \emph{hermitian bounded symmetric domains}. When $\mathcal{D}=G/K$ is of type $C_r$ or $D_r$, we prove that $G$ acts transitively on each connected component of the set $\Sigma$ of \emph{maximal tripotents} in the \emph{compact Jordan triple system} $T_0\mathcal{D}$. In the hermitian case, this set is connected and is called \emph{the Shilov boundary}. In the real case, $\Sigma$ is not necessarily connected, thus we choose a connected component $\mathcal{S}$ of $\Sigma$. Then the action of $G$ in $\mathcal{S}\times\mathcal{S}$ as a finite number of orbits for wich we give representative elements. If $\mathcal{D}$ is of type $C_s$ or $D_{2s}$, then the set of couples of transversal elements of $\mathcal{S}$ is a $G$-orbit in $\mathcal{S}\times\mathcal{S}$. Under these assumptions, $G$ acts on the set of transversal triples in $\mathcal{S}\times\mathcal{S}\times\mathcal{S}$ and we determine the orbits for this action. Finally, we are interested in Hua differential systems. We prove that for any continuous function $\varphi$ on $\mathcal{S}$, the Poisson transform $f=\mathcal{P}_\sigma\varphi:=\int_\mathcal{S}\mathcal{P}(\cdot,u)^\sigma\varphi(u)du$ is a solution of the Hua system $\mathcal{H}f(x)=(\frac{2n^-}{r})^2\sigma(\sigma-1)f(x)\textnormal{Id}$, where $\mathcal{P}(\cdot,\cdot)$ is the Poisson kernel on $\mathcal{D}\times\mathcal{S}$ and $n^-$ is the dimension of $V^-$.

O design de Fred Jordan / The design of Fred Jordan

Bastos, Helena Rugai 08 May 2012 (has links)
No standard academic program or established approach for learning and practicing graphic design existed in Brazil during the first two decades of his career, and this analysis points out the distinct stages of Jordan\'s work between1940 and 1990. In the process, this research endeavors to describe the different phases of the designer\'s creative output against the historical background. lt demonstrates the significance of Jordan\'s work and how his projects allow us to understand the transformation of the graphic design discipline and industry, from his use of technology, techniques and themes, meeting the needs of the industrial revolution and the diversified consuming public. Focusing upon the Sao Paulo environment where he worked, the paper examines his influence on the field of visual arts, taking into account the profile of the professional design groups in Brazil at that time. Within this broader picture, it is possible to confirm the factors that influenced him, his circle of friends, his dialogue with intellectuals, artists and professionals in the visual arts and design community, as well as his areas of interest and study. To achieve this goal, the approach taken here was a recreation of the artist\'s life journey through extensive bibliographic research and a survey and organization of the Jordan family\'s collection of his work. Some of the sources, primarily the texts that discuss his work, bring to light Jordan\'s participation and influence on the Brazilian and international cultural scene. The study helps the reader understand several aspects of Jordan\'s work: his view of the meaning of art and the artist; the connection he made between contemporary design and themes employed by German authors and artists in the first half of the 19th Century;and his experiments based upon Goethe\'s Theory of Colours and the naturalistic thought of that German writer. Finally, it also presents a catalogue of Fred Jordan\'s designs and ofthe documentation related to his work.

A extensão do modelo estocástico \'Raise and Peel\' com absorção controlada / The extension of the stochastic Raise and Peel model with controlled absorption

Diego Alejandro Carvajal Jara 19 May 2017 (has links)
O modelo estocástico Raise and Peel é estudado nesta tese. / The stochastic model Raise and Peel is studied in this thesis. we use the Monte Carlo simulation method together with the exact and numerical diagonalization methods of the Liouville operator. This stochastic model is a one-dimensional growth model with two free parameters. A local absorption parameter and a non-local desorption one. As a function of these two parameters, a rich phase diagram is observed, presenting massive regions, critically self-organized regions, quasi-stationary states and transitions to multiple absorbing states. The main result of this work is to emphasize the existence of Jordan cells in the Liouville operator. Jordan cells that grow with the size of the system and therefore in the thermodynamic limit the asymptotic dynamics can be masked. At the numerical level, these Jordan cells can lead to erroneous interpretations of massive phases as being massless critical ones or vice versa. Therefore depending on the initial condition, it is observed that the presence of Jordan cells can lead to the erroneous determination of critical exponents and produce excessively large lifetimes. Due to these effects, it is necessary to determine the critical exponents and the lifetimes by several distinct methods whenever possible, besides controlling the behavior of these quantities, by considering the evolution with different initial conditions. Among other results, we found the existence of quasi-stationary states with lifetimes that grow much faster than a power law of the systems size. We obtained a dynamic critical exponent z = 1 in the transition to multi-absorbent states in both cases without absorption or desorption. The model also shows a rough phase with a roughness exponent close to zero when the absorption rate is higher than the desorption rate. Finally, we observed that the model studied under periodic boundary conditions, can be seen as a KPZ model in 1 + 1 dimensions, under the effect of two perturbations. One of them being relevant and the other one irrelevant.

This work is oriented to teachers and students in the high school. It aims to show the usage of Gauss-Jordan’s Elimination Method to solve systems of linear equations, calculation of inverse matrices and determinants. The motivation behind the selection of this topic is that, more and more, the study of matrices, determinants, and consequently, systems of linear equations has been ignored in the high school. Firstly, an abridgement is done on what equivalent matrices and elementary operations are. Secondly, it explains about the cofactor of an element of a matrix and about adjoint matrices, needed for the calculation of the inverse matrix using determinants. A little introduction of Gauss and Jordan’s histories is made, and then, the method itself. It is also shown what happens with the method when the matrices are not invertible, the systems are possible but undetermined, or, the systems are not possible. Concerning determinants, their properties are presented and the method’s efficacy for determinants of order n 3 is shown and furthermore, it is shown the application of the determinants in the calculation of inverse matrices and resolutions of systems using Cramer’s Rule. Finally, some suggestions for exercises are presented with brief resolutions.

Algèbres de Jordan euclidiennes et problèmes variationels avec contraintes coniques / Euclidean Jordan algebras and variational problems under conic constraints

Sossa, David 04 September 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with four different but interrelated topics: variational problems on Euclidean Jordan algebras, complementarity problems on the space of symmetric matrices, angular analysis between two closed convex cones and the central path for symmetric cone linear programming. In the first part of this work we study the concept of “operator commutation” in Euclidean Jordan algebras by providing a commutation principle for variational problems involving spectral data. Our main concern of the second part is the analysis and numerical resolution of a broad class of complementarity problems on spaces of symmetric matrices. The complementarity conditions are expressed in terms of the Loewner ordering or, more generally, with respect to a dual pair of Loewnerian cones. The third part of this work is an attempt to build a general theory of critical angles for a pair of closed convex cones. The angular analysis for a pair of specially structured cones is also covered. For instance, we work with linear subspaces, polyhedral cones, revolution cones, topheavy cones and cones of matrices. The last part of this work focuses on the convergence and the limiting behavior of the central path in symmetric cone linear programming. This is done by using Jordan-algebra techniques.

The description of dynamics of quantum many-body systems is a key ingredient to perform quantum computation and/or simulations of quantum behavior. In the present proposal, we study the time evolution of quantum spin chains with impurities at one of the boundaries, in order to understand the role of defects in relaxation properties. The quantum (transverse) Ising model with an impurity has been solved in exact form, using the Jordan-Wigner transformation, where spins are mapped onto spinless fermions, thus simulating analytically a spin system with particles. We completely characterize the spectrum, with the presence of bound states depending on values of the impurity parameters. We calculate the local magnetization and observe its relaxation for particular non-homogeneous initial states. Surprisingly, remanent Rabi oscillations are observed at asymptotically long times, when the spectrum displays two bound states / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física / 1247646/2013 / CAPES

Accounting disclosure, financial transparency, ownership structure and corporate governance : implications for internal and external WVB Jordanian credit risk assessments

Al-Khawaaldah Bani Hasan, Abdullah A. K. January 2011 (has links)
Creditworthiness is a quality that is important to all stakeholders of an organisation, especially bondholders. It is posited that good corporate governance practices assist the confidence that stakeholders have in an organization’s ability to generate the strong cash flows that are needed to meet financial obligations, which in turn should enhance credit risk assessments. Much research has been conducted into rating assessments, but these have largely been directed at developed markets and they have not generally been focused on the impact of good corporate governance practices and procedures. The primary focus of this research is to address this issue through an investigation into the impact of key factors upon the credit risk assessments of listed companies on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) in Jordan, as assessed by World'vest Base Inc. (WVB) credit risk assessment scores for Jordanian companies between 2005 and 2007 inclusively. Drawing upon insights from agency (including management disciplining and wealth redistribution hypotheses), stewardship, stakeholder, signalling, legitimacy and the diffusion of innovation theories, this thesis investigates the determinants of WVB credit risk assessments of Jordanian firms under five headings: accounting and financial aspects, market and regulatory perspectives, influence of ownership structure, financial transparency/disclosure and corporate governance factors. To achieve this, an array of modelling techniques is used in order to provide a more comprehensive picture. They include bivariate analysis, one-way analysis of variance, ordinary least square regressions for numerical scores, binary logistic regressions, and ordinal logistic regression. The results demonstrate that accounting and financial factors have a significant impact on credit risk assessments but not capital intensity. Profitability is positively associated with credit risk assessments, while leverage and loss propensity have a negative association. With respect to market and regulatory factors, size and Tobin’s Q are positively associated with credit risk assessments. By contrast type of sector and audit are not related to credit risk assessments. Foreign ownership enhances ratings, whilst institutional ownership has a negative impact. Also, insider ownership and family ownership have some importance. It was surprising to find that whilst financial transparency and disclosure variables are significantly associated positively with credit risk assessments in some models, they were generally not significant across other models. Nevertheless, the study finds empirical evidence to support a degree of association between credit risk assessments and corporate governance factors. There is also a positive association between board size and credit risk assessments, but the most important aspect of corporate governance for Jordanian firms is board expertise. The originality of this thesis also embraces the inclusion not only of externally published WVB risk assessments in the Jordanian context, but also internal numerical ratings that were made available with kind permission from the WVB agency for the purposes of this research. The question is whether there are insights that can be gained from such internal ratings that have not hitherto been made available to other researchers. The answer is in the affirmative, for role duality on the board of directors is evidently more important to WVB’s own internal numerical rating assessments than is evidenced by the WVB externally published credit risk assessments. Specifically, the significance of corporate governance (role duality) is missed by multivariate models that are based solely on externally published data. Furthermore, financial transparency and disclosure variables reveal more (albeit moderate) support for the more refined internal scores of WVB than for the external assessment ratings. Finally, family ownership is also important to WVB’s internal scores. Thus, this research has enabled deeper insights to be gained into credit risk assessment determinants within the Jordanian context.
