The continental shelf on the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula is a region of substantial climate and ecosystem change. The Long Term Ecological Research project at Palmer Station has been sampling and studying the shelf ecosystem and physical environment since 1990. This dissertation seeks to improve our understanding of the subtidal and intraseasonal (hereafter defined together as 3-100 days) circulation on the neighboring continental shelf and is particularly motivated by the aims of the project to understand (1) how lateral transports of scalar parameters such as heat affect the vertical stratification and (2) how coastal canyon heads are linked to the larger-scale shelf circulation and why they are such ecologically productive environments. In this dissertation we study: (1) the origin and mixing of mesoscale eddies as agents of heat transport and stirring; (2) the spatial coherence of shelf-scale barotropic velocity fluctuations, their origin through flow-topography interaction with Marguerite Trough Canyon, and their associated heat transports; and (3) the wind-driven dynamics of the long-shore flow manifested through coastal trapped waves and their ability to both induce upwelling at a coastal canyon head and to modulate isopycnal depth at the continental shelf-break. This work takes an observational approach, utilizing the rare and expansive data set afforded by the long-term sampling program including shipboard CTD and ADCP profiles, moored current meter time series, and CTD profiles from an autonomous underwater vehicle.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation is a tropical atmospheric phenomenon detected as anomalies in zonal winds, convection and cloudiness. This perturbation has a definitive timescale of about thirty to sixty days, allowing its signal to be extracted from background data. The Madden-Julian Oscillation originates over the western Indian Ocean and generates a convective region which moves east along the equatorial region. This perturbation is thought to contribute to the timing and intensity of the eastern hemisphere monsoons, the El Niño/ Southern Oscillation and tropical storms and cyclones. The current understanding of the Madden-Julian Oscillation is that it restricts the bulk of its' influence to the tropics, however some evidence suggested that the impact is more extensive. Analysis of about 30 years of data showed significant modulation of rainfall by the equatorial passage of the MJO. The real-time multivariate Madden-Julian Oscillation Index was used to estimate the location and amplitude of the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and forms the basis of the basic rainfall prediction tool developed. The method developed here clearly linked the low latitude passage of the Madden-Julian Oscillation with suppressed and enhanced rainfall events in the Australasian region and beyond. A rudimentary forecasting capability at the intraseasonal time scale has been developed suitable for assisting Australian agricultural sector. A subsequent and independent analysis of global mean sea level pressure anomalies provided evidence of teleconnections between the Madden-Julian Oscillation and higher latitude atmospheric entities. These anomalies confirm the existence of teleconnections capable of producing the rainfall pattern outputs. The MJO is strongly influenced by the season. However the seasonally dependant analysis of rainfall with respect to the Madden Julian Oscillation conducted was inconclusive, suggesting aspects of the MJO influence still require clarification. Considering the importance of rainfall variability to the Australian agricultural sector the forecasting tool developed, although basic, is significant.

Syftet med föreliggande studie är att utifrån nyhetsrapporteringen om Wikileaks och Julian Assange undersöka hur Assange framställts i två svenska tidningar 2010-2011. Undersökningen analyserar i synnerhet hur Assange konstrueras i relation till Wikileaks och åtalet om sexualbrott i Sverige. Totalt analyseras 31 artiklar från de två svenska tidningarna Dagens Nyheter och Aftonbladet, framtaget genom ett händelseorienterat urval. Uppsatsen utgår från teorier om nyhetsjournalistikens roll att konstruera en mediepersonlighet. Vidare vilar analysen på Dyer och Hall’s teorier om stereotyper samt utgår från Allern och Pollaks teori om medierad skandalisering. Ansatsen är kvalitativ och metoden är Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys. Undersökningen visar att det går att utläsa ett förenklat narrativ av Assanges liv, där det finns ett generellt fokus på problematik. Därtill har rapporteringen utvecklats från att 2010 ha beskrivit Assange som ett nomadiskt geni till att 2011 framställa honom som en narcissistisk rockstjärna.

<p>This dissertation explores the complex vocabularies of service and servitude in the Age of Chaucer. Working with three major Middle English texts--William Langland's <i>Piers Plowman</i> (chaps. 1 and 3), Julian of Norwich's <i>Revelation of Love</i> (chap. 2), and Geoffrey Chaucer's <i>Troilus and Criseyde</i> (chap. 4)--my thesis argues that the languages of service available to these writers provided them with a rich set of metaphorical tools for expressing the relation between metaphysics and social practice. For late medieval English culture, the word "service" was an all-encompassing marker used to describe relations between individuals and their loved ones, their neighbors, their church, their God, and their institutions of government. In the field of Middle English studies, these categories have too often been held apart from one another and the language of service has too often been understood as drawing its meanings solely from legal and economic discourses, the purview of social historians. <i>Love, Labor, Liturgy</i> sets out to correct this underanalysis by pointing to a diverse tradition of theological and philosophical thought concerning the possibilities and paradoxes of Christian service, a tradition ranging from Saint Augustine to Martin Luther and beyond.</p> / Dissertation

Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka ifall och om så även hur Wikileaks och Julian Assange porträtteras före och efter de våldtäktsanklagelser mot Assange som offentliggjordes i augusti 2010. I den diskursanalys som genomförs granskas sex nyhetsartiklar som valts ut efter bestämda tidsaspekter men i övrigt slumpmässigt. Artiklarna har publicerats i Dagens Nyheter och släppts från TT. Analysen bygger delvis på en ram lagd av teoretikerna Ernesto Laclau och Chantal Mouffe, och på teori och metodik beskriven av Norman Fairclough, och som handlar om att sätta diskursiva praktiker i samband med social och kulturell utveckling. Analysen är komparativ och fokuserar på det retoriskt diskursiva. Undersökningen visar att det finns en diskrepans mellan språkbruket i de artiklar som publicerats innan 2010 och de som publicerats efter tidpunkten. Det visar sig också vara så att Julian Assange och Wikileaks kopplas samman i större utsträckning före och efter 2010. Den största förändringen i språkvalet är ett större ifrågasättande av trovärdighet och motiv för materialsläpp vad gäller Wikileaks, som går parallellt med en beskrivning av Assange som blir allt mer opersonlig efter 2010. Organisationen fortsätter att vara en källa för DN och TT men i synnerhet deras motiv och trovärdighet ifrågasätts.

The amounts of theories that deal with naval warfare are many. Several of those are developed under the previous century when tactics and technology were in the eve of development. Many of modern thinkers within science of war often refer to older but recognized theories. The purpose of this essay is to examine if the old but recognized theories are of current interest in modern naval warfare. The questions that are used in this essay are, what is the characteristics of the war of Yom Kippur with Mahan’s offensive and Corbett’s defensive as a starting-point and are there any of the theories that are prominent. The examination is then carried out through analysing Mahan’s offensive and Corbett’s defensive. With their theories as a starting-point the characteristics of Mahan’s offensive and Corbett’s defensive are to be found within the war of Yom Kippur. The conclusions show that there are characteristics of Mahan’s offensive and Corbett’s defensive within the war of Yom Kippur. The defensive is striking on the political strategic level. The offensive is conspicuous on the military strategic and tactical level.

Jag vill i den här uppsatsen lyfta fram olika berättartekniska aspekter i romanen, och visa hur dessa samverkar med varandra samt ger extra dimensioner till idéinnehållet. För att uppnå det vill jag använda mig av flera ingångar – såväl narratologiska som retoriska – för att på det viset framhäva flera olika effekter.
