A recepção alemã à revolução russa de 1905 / The German reception towards the Russian revolution of 1905

Luiz Enrique Vieira de Souza 27 November 2012 (has links)
The statements presented in the following pages will focus the reaction of some representative members of the German intelligentsia towards the Russian revolution of 1905. Due to its achievements in the cultural field, Russia already exercised a sort of magnectical attraction upon the German cultural stratum, even before it became the scenery of revolutionary events of central importance for the political destiny of the European continent. Neverthless, those conflicts that ensued the bloody Sunday also roused concerns about the possible reflexes of this revolutionary proccess in their own political context. This assertion will be corroborated by the critical analysis of the writings that some among the most prominent intellectual personalities in Wilhelminian Germany devoted to the disputes in the empire of the tsar. More specifically, I intend to consider Max Weber\'s articles which were based on a peculiar combination of German nacionalism and the liberal tradition in relation to the judgments of the different social democratic tendencies envolved in the debate over the course of the major party within the Second International. Thus, I will make an attempt to shed some light on how the controversies between Eduard Bernstein, Karl Kautsky and Rosa Luxemburg over the feasibility of the political mass strike methods in Germany were infused with particular interpretations concerning the distance between the class struggle conditions in the Kaiserreich and the peculiarities which characterized that social tissue where the proletariat emerged for the first time as protagonist and hegemonical force of revolutionary transformations. In short, it will be shown that these authors\' formulations about the Russian revolution were pervaded by underlying reflections that implicitly or explicitly referred to the social and political tensions that accompanied the modernization proccess in Germany. Metaphorically, I will support the proposition that Russia appeared to them as a convex mirror, where the image of Germany would have been reflected, even though in a distorted manner.

"Three and a Half Men": the Bülow-Hammann System of Public Relations before the First World War

Orgill, Nathan Neil January 2009 (has links)

This dissertation analyzes the history of the press bureau of the German Foreign Office before the First World War. Methodologically, the work tries to locate European international history in a larger political, intellectual, and cultural context by examining German statesmen and their attempts to cultivate a consensus for their policies in the Reichstag and the press from 1890 to 1914. Relying upon official documents, memoirs, personal letters, and published newspaper articles, it argues that the death of the "Old Diplomacy," usually associated with the years after the Versailles Peace Treaty, actually began as early as 1890. This development caused German statesmen after Bismarck's dismissal to invent new ways of building public support for their policies through the creation of what is labeled here the "Bülow-Hammann System" of public relations. Eschewing Bismarckian methods of compulsion, this new system cultivated personal connections with journalists from trusted newspapers who would toe a government line for inside information. The system initially worked well to meet the new openness of the international milieu after 1890. But eventually these methods failed to stem criticism on the nationalist right and socialist left after 1909, when Germany's position vis-à-vis France, Britain, and Russia greatly deteriorated. As a result, more modern methods of dealing with public opinion had to be developed in Germany after 1914--the dissemination of outright propaganda and the use of modern press conferences--to cultivate support for governmental policies.
/ Dissertation

A Vegetarian Re-Enchantment of the World : Subjective experiences, gender, and emotion in German Vegetarianism read through the member magazines of the Deutscher Vegetarier-Bund 1895-1931

Sjöberg, Wilma January 2017 (has links)

Roy, Anne-Marie 08 1900 (has links)
After it was declared capital city of the new Reich in 1871, Berlin was a very dense and very modern European metropolis in regards to different industries, technologies and public transports. However, the Emperor at the head of the country, Wilhelm II (1859-1941), tried to maintain a highly glorified image of his State and imposed his ideal conception of the arts. In so doing, he created an artistic policy, a Kunstpolitik, and strongly urged the Berliner artists of his era to work in a very conservative artistic genre. It is during a famous speech for the inauguration of the Victory Avenue, situated in the Tiergarten in Berlin, on the 18th December 1901, that the Emperor expressed his exact thoughts on what makes a good or a bad artist, and what kind of art is right or wrong. Any art diverging from his ideal would be qualified as “Rinnsteinkunst”. Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), a working-class draftsman and caricaturist, spent his whole career sketching the proletarians and the poor in a satirical, naturalist and blunt way, exposing their everyday lives and their environment, called the “Milljöh”. This thesis attempts to draw the direct relation between the concepts of the “Rinnsteinkunst” and the work of Heinrich Zille, to finally establish a concrete example of what this “gutter art” is about and to demonstrate how Zille used this artistic style. Belonging to the Berlin modernist movement, mainly as part of the Berlin Secession, Zille drew a lot of attention from the public by bringing forward taboo subjects that were banned from official art. His oeuvre, crafted using different formats, mediums, techniques, shows the hidden face of the official imperial Berlin. Innovations in printing techniques, as well as the development of intermediality and international artistic relations allowed for a wide circulation of his drawings, strongly fostering the establishment of modern art in Berlin.

Bank, Volker, Nicklas, Jannik 15 October 2020 (has links)
