A comparative study of detrital zircon ages from river sediment and rocks of the Karoo Supergroup (Late Carboniferous to Jurassic), Eastern Cape Province, South Africa : implications for the tectono-sedimentary evolution of Gondwanaland’s southern continental margin

(Geology) / The Mzimvubu River, situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, drains essentially strata of the Late Carboniferous to Jurassic Karoo Supergroup with minor intersection of the underlying Devonian Msikaba Formation near the mouth of the river at Port St. Johns. Rock- and river sediment samples were collected at specific points from within the Mzimvubu River drainage basin, based on changes in the geology through which the rivers flow. Detrital zircon age population data was obtained by LA-ICP-MS for each sample in order to meet the two-fold objective of the study; firstly to investigate the reliability of using detrital zircon grains as indicators of sedimentary provenance and secondly to determine possible source areas for the Karoo strata and underlying Msikaba Formation. Through the comparison of detrital zircon age population data for the rock units of the Karoo Supergroup and Msikaba Formation to that of the river sediment, it is concluded that detrital zircon grains hold value in deciphering the geological history of a sedimentary basin. This interpretation is based on similar distributions and trends that are present in both the zircon age populations of the rock- and sediment samples. However, complexities associated with detrital zircon analysis pertaining to rock type and depositional settings are noted and therefore certain procedures that can be implemented during field sampling have been suggested in this study so as to ensure accurate results are obtained. This will further ensure that reliable interpretations of the geological history of a sedimentary basin are achieved. Additionally, by utilising the detrital zircon population data obtained in the first part of the study in conjunction with published scientific data, the provenance of the Karoo Supergroup in the southeastern part of the Main Karoo Basin has been determined. From this data it was determined that, especially the upper part of the Karoo Supergroup in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, was deposited much later than previously thought and that many of the stratigraphic layers in the Karoo Basin were deposited coevally in different parts of the basin with lithostratigraphic boundaries being time-transgressive. Ultimately the data allowed for the construction of a tectono-sedimentary model to explain the deposition of the upper Cape- and Karoo Supergroups that started with the deposition of the Msikaba Formation in a passive continental margin setting, to deposition of the lower part of the Karoo Supergroup in an Andean type of foreland basin, with rifting starting during the times of deposition of the Molteno Formation. The deposition of the Molteno-, Elliot- and Clarens Formations took place as Gondwanaland was breaking apart coeval with the formation of the Karoo Igneous Province.

The relevance of fog and dew precipitation to succulent plant hydrology in an arid South African ecosystem

Magister Scientiae (Biodiversity and Conservation Biology) / Fog and dew interception and utilization by plant canopies remains one of the least considered aspects of vegetation studies at any scale yet the few studies that have been conducted point to their considerable influence on ecological processes and a critical role in modulating climate in southern African arid ecosystems. Their relevance to succulent plant hydrology was investigated in this study.The first study measured stable 18O and 2H isotope ratios in samples of rain, fog and dew water and compared these with those assayed monthly in stem xylem water of six succulent shrub species over a one year period. Negative 18O and 2H ratios were observed in the stem xylem water of all six species signifying a predominance of water derived from fog and dew precipitation which was most conspicuous during the wet winter. This implied that fog and dew are even more important sources of water than rain and corroborated by significant correspondence found between fog and dew frequencies, succulent foliar water contents and quantum yields of photochemistry.The second study monitored variations in stem diameter at 2-hourly intervals in 8 succulent shrub species of diverse growth form over a 9-month period. Two groups of species were distinguished based on whether their daily amplitudes in stem diameter were consistently positively correlated with daily fluxes in vapour pressure deficit, which were indicative of a persistent CAM photosynthetic mode, or intermittently correlated with daily fluxes in vapour pressure deficit, which were indicative of mixed CAM and C3 photosynthetic modes. Among species displaying a persistent CAM photosynthetic mode, high nocturnal fog and dew precipitation amounts corresponded with low daily amplitudes in stem diameter, and vice versa, which pointed to reduced nocturnal stomatal water loss. These patterns, which were indistinct among species displaying mixed CAM and C3 photosynthetic modes, were corroborated by small daily amplitudes in stem diameter also consistently observed in one species displaying a CAM photosynthetic mode in ambient than artificially fog and dew excluded environments.The third study monitored changes in water mass at hourly intervals of quartz gravel substrates with different dwarf succulent species assemblages over an 8-month period.Consistently greater net amounts of water were intercepted daily by quartz gravel substrates containing Agyroderma pearsonii than Cephalophylum spissum plants as well as those without plants. These attributed to a high water repellence of A. pearsonii leaves and less radiation absorbed by the paler silvery to grey-green leaves of A. pearsonii leaves than the dark green leaves of C. spissum resulting in lower leaf temperatures and less water loss by transpiration. Quartz gravel soils devoid of plants intercepted nearly 5-times greater amounts of precipitation contributed by fog and dew than that contributed by rain. These precipitation amounts exceeding the high percentages of total hydrological input contributed by fog and dew reported in other ecosystems.The study concludes that fog and dew are a vital source of water for succulent shrubs in arid South African ecosystems and imply that diminished fog and dew frequencies associated with elevated night time temperatures accompanying global warming could exacerbate plant drought stress.

Nitrogen and carbon costs of growth and antioxidant production during acclimation to environmental stress in two species of Gethyllis

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Gethyllis multifolia L. Bolus and G. villosa Thunb. are winter-growing, summer blooming, deciduous and bulbous geophytes that grow naturally in the semi-arid succulent Karoo biome of South Africa. Both species grow under full sun conditions and have four distinctive growth phases: a winter (cold and wet) growing phase, leaf senescence phase towards spring, flowering phase during the hot and dry summer months, and fruit and leaf formation phase in autumn. The medicinal uses of this genus (including G. multifolia "Kukumakranka" and G. villosa "hairy kukumakranka") range from cures for colic, digestive disturbances, teething problems, fatigue, boils, bruises and insect bites, to being used as an aphrodisiac. Gethyllis multifolia is threatened in its natural habitat and is listed in the 'Vulnerable' category of the 'Red Data List of Southern African Plants' and the 'IUCN-World Conservation Union List of Plants'. The literature indicate that the habitats of both species are being exposed to drier conditions and is further threatened by the encroachment of invasive indigenous plant species. It is not known to which extent these factors may pose a threat to the existence of both species. The first objective of this investigation was to determine the costs of vegetative and reproductive growth during the seasonal life cycle of the plant, using carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) as a physiological currency. The second objective was to elucidate a functional basis to explain the difference in the conservation status of both species in their natural habitat. Both species were subjected to drought and shading as environmental stresses and the plant physiological performance was investigated via photosynthetic gas exchange. The third objective of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant content (total polyphenol, flavonol/flavone and flavanone content) and antioxidant capacity [ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and 2,2'-azino-di-3- ethylbenzthiazoline sulphonate (ABTS) radical cation scavenging ability] of natural populations and plant samples that were exposed to photo- and -drought environmental stresses. This study was done to elucidate the antioxidant profile of plant parts of natural populations as well as providing farmers, traditional healers and pharmaceutical companies with cultivation environmental conditions to enhance the antioxidant properties of the species. This investigation also attempted to isolate and characterize, by means of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography (CC), natural compounds from both species to lend support to the purported antioxidant benefit of both species and to further lend support to claims made by traditional healers of the medicinal potential of the genus. This study, however, did not engage in any in viva studies or human trials to support published literature of the medicinal benefits of the genus. The photosynthetic adaptation studies indicated that G. villosa had a better photosynthetic performance than G. multifolia during both drought and low light conditions because of the inability of G. multifolia to adapt to a wider range of environmental extremes. The C and N cost of growth and reproduction studies revealed that G. villosa had a more efficient resource utilisation strategy for both growth and reproduction. These physiological responses suggest that G. villosa, in general, has a more efficient survival strategy and that G. multifolia will struggle to adapt to drier environmental conditions, as well as growing in the shade of encroaching invasive plant species. To conclude, this could be a contributing factor as to why G. multifolia is threatened in its natural habitat and G. villosa not. The antioxidant content-and -capacity study on natural populations of both species revealed the highest total polyphenol content, FRAP and ORAC values for the flowers and fruits of G. multifolia and G. villosa compared to other plant parts. These values were found to be in line with and in some cases higher than most commercial fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant activity during drought and photo-stress of the leaves, bulbs and roots was found to be highest in the roots of both species during drought stress. Gethyllis multifolia, in general, exhibited higher total polyphenol content than G. villosa, with the highest content measured during drought stress in the roots of G. multifolia. Phytochemical investigation of the leaves, bulbs and roots of G. multifolia and G. villosa revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, glycosides as well as essential oils, while alkaloids were absent. The chromatographic profiles of the leaves, bulbs and roots of both species further indicated that the roots of G. multifolia contained the highest concentration of natural products, compared to G. villosa and other plant parts. Further in-depth studies on the roots of G. multifolia led to the isolation and characterization of three known flavonoids, of which one was also isolated as its endogenously acetylated derivative. In contrast to the fact that both species had a high polyphenol content and exhibited high antioxidant activity, the isolated compounds in this study revealed very low antioxidant activity. However, the literature revealed that some of these isolated compounds exhibit antifungal, antibacterial, anti angiogenic and anti carcinogenic properties in vitro, which could be ascribed to the medicinal applications of plant parts of certain species belonging to this genus. Furthermore, this study suggests that further chemistry and pharmaceutical research on the genus, Gethyllis, in specific the flowers and fruit of these two species, be pursued.

Ecology and diet of the caracal (Caracal caracal) on lethal and non-lethal control farms in the Karoo

Within South Africa, human-carnivore conflict (HCC) as a result of carnivore depredation on small-livestock causes large-scale losses, and promotes the use of predator management tools by farmers. Despite being one of the major offenders involved in HCC, caracals, and their ecology in particular, are understudied. This is mainly due to high levels of persecution, coupled with their elusive nature. Within the Karoo region of South Africa, pastoralists make use of large-scale lethal predator controls in an attempt to remove the offenders, or non-lethal predator controls to protect livestock and deter predators. However, the effects of these various predator control techniques on caracal ecology have not been widely tested. Therefore, the aims of this thesis were, firstly, to assess caracal diet on lethal and non-lethal treatment farms in the Karoo; secondly, to investigate the drivers of caracal habitat selection on a non-lethal farm in the Karoo; and finally, to evaluate caracal activity patterns on the non-lethal farm. To do this, I made use of two non-invasive techniques (i.e. scat analysis and camera trapping). Caracals appeared to favour natural prey across all sites, with livestock remains only found in scats collected at the lethal treatment farm. Caracals had the broadest dietary breadth on the non-lethal treatment site, and the narrowest on the lethal treatment site. The main components of caracal diet included small mammals, lagomorphs, rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis), wild ungulates and arthropods. Caracal habitat selection was explained by resource dispersion and environmental features Interestingly, the presence of livestock was not a major consideration in caracal habitat selection. Caracals were mainly nocturnal but became increasingly crepuscular during winter. In addition, caracal activity overlapped significantly with black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), lagomorphs and common duikers (Sylvicapra grimmia). Caracals showed plasticity in their activity patterns based on seasonal temperature fluctuations, and partially human avoidance. This study contributes to understanding how caracal ecology differs on differently managed livestock farms. Throughout this study, the importance of both a natural prey base, as well as natural lands to caracal survival have been revealed. These findings can contribute to caracal conservation in HCC areas.

Lightning protection and radio frequency interference mitigation for the Karoo Array Telescope

Thesis (PhD (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa and Australia are now the two remaining countries bidding for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the biggest and most sensitive project ever undertaken in radio astronomy. The South African SKA is demonstrating its technology capabilities through the Karoo Array Telescope (KAT or MeerKAT). The development of KAT is taking place in stages to optimise design and minimise risks at each stage. An array of seven 12 m antennas will be complete by the end of 2009, called KAT-7. The following phase will see the construction of MeerKAT, which will lead to eighty arrayed dishes. Lightning and RFI studies for KAT-7 are the focus of this dissertation. Due to the extent and complexity of the South African demonstrator project, these studies have largely been conducted on a single structure. Parameters for the dish antenna and pedestal design changed throughout their development. To be effective, the doctoral research had to track these changes appropriately. A Method of Moments frequency domain computational electromagnetic code, FEKO, is used throughout the study. The consequences of direct and indirect lightning strikes are examined for the KAT-7 structure. Important FEKO model verification is achieved through measurement of physical scale models in an anechoic chamber. The microwave simulation code, CST, gives direct comparison of FEKO results by using a finite volume time domain method of calculation. Using frequency domain analysis on these models, the lightning down conductor design over the dish antenna bearings is optimised with cost-effectiveness as one driving parameter. RFI coupling levels for different designs are compared to each other to identify areas requiring RFI mitigation. Analysis of resonances enables evaluation of the mitigation at frequencies sensitive to radio astronomy. A Sommerfeld integral ground plane is used together with the computational model to investigate the use of the concrete foundation steel reinforcing as part of the lightning earthing electrode system. Different interconnections of the steel reinforcing elements are critically evaluated. The KAT-7 design incorporated clear lightning protection and RFI mitigation policies derived from recommendations contained within this dissertation. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Suid-Afrika en Australie is nou die oorblywende twee lande wat bie vir die Vierkante Kilometer Reeks (SKA), die grootste en mees sensitiewe projek nog ooit in radio astronomie onderneem. Processes and controls on shelf margin accretion and degradation : Karoo Basin, South Africa

The interaction of numerous sedimentary processes at key transition points along the depositional profile results in a complex heterogeneity in ancient basin margin successions. This complexity is generally well studied along depositional dip sections, but lateral (strike) variability and consequent implications for sediment distribution and stratigraphic architecture is commonly less well constrained. In the Karoo Basin, continuous NW-SE-oriented exposure over 80 km has been characterized by 53 logs with 9910 m of cumulative thickness, >2500 palaeocurrent measurements, and ground-, drone- and helicopter-based photo panels. Palaeoflow indicators suggest dominant sediment transport was to the N-NE, with E-W and NE-SW bidirectional components. These are consistent with a strike orientation of the outcrop belt relative to the NE-N margin progradation direction and a NE-SW reworking by waves orientation. In the south of the study area, upper slope and shelf edge parasequences (50-75 m-thick), show current ripples and inverse-to-normal grading in micaceous and organic-rich siltstones and sandstones. They are interpreted as river-dominated prodelta and mouth bar deposits, locally incised by distributary channels (100 m-thick, 1.5 km-wide). Overlying shelf parasequences are thinner (15-50 m) with symmetrical ripple tops, HCS and low angle cross bedding, interpreted as wave-influenced deltaic or shoreface deposits. They transition upward into erosive-based, fining-up sandstones and isolated sharp-based tabular climbing-rippled sandstones, interpreted as channels and crevasse splays within delta plain mudstones. Along strike to the north, upper slope parasequences show more wave reworking indicators and no evidence of gullying or incision. Overlying shelf parasequences are sandier, more amalgamated and strongly influenced by wave action. They are interpreted as offshore, shoreface, foreshore and strandplain deposits. Southern nearshore environments were therefore more river-dominated with bypass and sediment delivery to deeper parts of the basin across a steep, more erosive margin. Wave and storm current redistribution along strike to the northern, lower gradient margin resulted in higher net-to-gross and sand connectivity on a wider shelf, without major incision, bypass and sand supply to the upper slope. No evidence of major avulsions in the upstream tributary and distributary systems are interpreted because the bypass and fluvial-dominated characteristics are persistent in the southern areas through time, whereas the northern margin maintained a sand-starved upper slope and a wave dominated shelf succession. The overall thicker and delta- dominated succession in the south, and the thinner, more condensed and wave dominated stratigraphy in the north are interpreted to be controlled by a combination of basement and basin configuration and differential basin margin physiography. However, relative sea level fluctuations controlled the stacking patterns, with an overall shallowing-upward profile that can be subdivided into two prograding phases, separated by a transgressive phase. At parasequence scale, climate, autocyclicity and coastal processes influenced the equilibrium between sediment input, redistribution and compensational stacking. This study demonstrates that although basin margin successions may be consistently progradational, the interaction of mixed coastal processes and differential spatial configuration can result in a complex along-strike sedimentary architecture, with major implications for sediment distribution through time and space.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Cape Town and Karoo, 1870-1920 : policy and attitudes

This thesis focuses on the attitudes and policies which shaped the history of pulmonary tuberculosis in the Cape from 1870 to 1920 and culminated in the passing of the Public Health Act, Act 36 of 1919. It was this act which formed the basis of public health legislation in South Africa until the 1970s. The thesis is a contribution to the history of medicine and to the history of legislation. Topics explored include pulmonary tuberculosis and its early global history. When the practice of sufferers visiting places with particular climates became fashionable, towns in the Karoo became a popular destination. Their journey to the colony, together with their experience in Cradock is the subject of a chapter. Once the disease spread to the local population, the focus shifted to the attitudes and policies of the local authorities and their failure to address its spread. In contrast, in Cape Town the city council and its medical officer of health took up the challenge, but with limited success. The fight against tuberculosis was assisted by a number of dedicated individuals such as Dr Neil Macvicar who was the founder of the Native Health Society. The Society for the Prevention of Consumption, which was officially launched in Cape Town in June 1904, also contributed to educating the public about the disease. Once the Cape Colony entered into political Union in 1910 there was the added dimension of tuberculosis on the mines and the reluctance of mine officials to take care of workers suffering from the disease. This became an issue during the proceedings of the Tuberculosis Commission. The attitudes and prejudices towards the local population became formalised in the Public Health Act, Act 36 of 1919 because the act was drafted with the health of the white population in mind. By providing a skeleton budget for local authorities to deal with tuberculosis, the legislature ensured that the healthcare of the majority of the population, especially those who were most vulnerable to the disease, was not addressed. Controls on river and overbank processes in an aggradation-dominated system : Permo-Triassic Beaufort Group, South Africa

The Permo-Triassic lower Beaufort Group fluvial deposits extend over 100s of kilometres within the Karoo Basin, South Africa. A detailed study of the depositional architecture and stacking patterns of sand bodies within a 900 m thick succession has enabled interpretation of the controls on ancient river channel and overbank processes. Facies include very fine- to medium-grained sandstone, intra-formational conglomerate, mudstone and palaeosols. Channel-belts are dominated by upper flow regime structures, consistent with a flashy to ephemeral fluvial system. The overbank deposits comprise splays interbedded with purple, green and grey mudstone; these floodplain colour changes signify water table fluctuations. A hierarchy of channel-related elements has been established that recognises beds, bedsets, storeys, channel-belts, complexes and complex sets. Each channel-belt may be single- or multi-storey, whereby one storey represents the complete cut and fill cycle of a single migrating river, comprising bar accretion elements and channel-abandonment fill. The abandonment fill elements often consist of heterolithic plugs of climbing ripple-laminated very fine-grained sandstone, or interbedded claystone with siltstone. The Beaufort channel-belts preserve either lateral- or downstream-accretion patterns, or a combination. Each belt has either a lenticular or tabular geometry, recognisable by an erosional base overlain by intra-formational conglomerate lag and barform deposits. Genetically related channel-belts cluster to form complexes, of which two broad styles have been identified: Type A) laterally and vertically stacked channel-belts, and Type B) sub-vertically stacked channel-belts. There is evidence of localised clustering of sub-vertically stacked channel-belts adjacent to extensive overbank mudstone deposits. The apparent lack of a well-defined ‘container’ surface with mappable margins, suggests that this stacked channel-belt architecture represents an avulsion complex rather than a palaeovalley-fill. The lateral and stratigraphic variability in fluvial-overbank architecture is interpreted as the interplay of several controls. Allogenic forcing factors include, tectonic subsidence that influences accommodation, sediment supply, and high frequency climate cycles associated with the flashy discharge regime and expressed in the mudrock colour changes and distribution of palaeosols. The depositional river style, variability in channel-belt stacking patterns and compensational stacking of some channel-belt/splay complexes is interpreted to be the result of autogenic channel avulsion, supported by an absence of significant erosion. The relative merits of basin-axial trunk river and distributive fluvial system (DFS) models are assessed from detailed architectural and stratigraphic outcrop studies.

Crystalline basement rocks underlie over 60% of the South African surface, and the Limpopo Province of South Africa is no exception. Previous attempts to develop the lithologies of Limpopo for groundwater abstraction without the use of sound scientific methodologies resulted in low yielding boreholes and a higher rate of borehole failure. The complexity of the lithologies in the region necessitates the use of sound scientific methodologies for the delineation of promising groundwater potential zones. Therefore, the principal objective of the present study was to delineate groundwater potential zones through an integrated approach of remote sensing, geophysics, as well as the use of ancillary datasets. The area of focus is located in the northeastern section of Limpopo province, covering an area of about 16 800km2. Geologically, it is underlain by three Lithostratigraphic domains comprised of Archean-aged basement rocks, Soutpansberg volcano-sedimentary succession and subsidiary basins of the main Karoo young sedimentary cover. In general, the groundwater potential of a region is a function of factors such as lithology, lineaments, slope, climate and land use/ land cover. Thus, the present study used parameters such as lineaments, lithologies, slope, and land use/ land cover to produce a groundwater potential zone map. The thematic layers were prepared from raw datasets, which include; LANDSAT 8 OLI, ASTER-DEM, aeromagnetic data, geological maps, and land use/land cover data, which were overlaid in a GIS environment. The resultant groundwater map revealed the presence of five distinct classes of groundwater potential zones, which were categorised into excellent, good, moderate, low and very low. Interpretation of the results shows that the study area is dominated by areas that may be regarded as moderate water potential zones, covering about 52% of the total area. On the other hand, low and good groundwater potential zones occur in almost equal proportions of 19.52 % and 24 % respectively. The results obtained were validated using GRIP borehole dataset, and a number of follow-up geophysical surveys. iii Overlaying of the boreholes dataset on the map showed positive correlation between borehole yields groundwater potential zones. On the other hand, follow-up Vertical Electrical Sounding surveys revealed the presence of conductive layers in some selected target areas. The groundwater potential zone map and validation results provided a meaningful regional assessment of groundwater distribution in the study area. Thus, the results of this study can be used as a guideline for future groundwater exploration projects. / NRF

Impact of Prosopis (mesquite) invasion and clearing on ecosystem structure, function and agricultural productivity in semi-arid Nama Karoo rangeland, South Africa

My aims were to (1) determine the effects of invasion and clearing on rangeland vegetation composition, diversity (alien and indigenous species richness) and structure (alien and indigenous species cover), soil vegetation cover (plant canopy and basal cover) and agricultural productivity (grazing capacity), (2) describe the vegetation processes that underlay the invasion and clearing impacts and (3) evaluate the success of clearing in facilitating unaided restoration of ecological structure, function and agricultural productivity in formerly invaded rangeland. I hypothesised that invasion would significantly change rangeland vegetation composition and structure, leading to greater alien species richness and cover and lower indigenous species richness and cover while clearing would lead to lower alien species diversity and cover and greater indigenous species richness and cover. In addition I hypothesized that invasion would reduce rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity while clearing would substantially increase them. Finally I predicted that vegetation composition, alien and indigenous species cover and richness, plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity would revert to pre-invasion status and levels within four to six years of clearing. My results suggest that in heavily grazed Nama Karoo rangeland Prosopis invasion (~15 percent canopy cover) and clearing can significantly change rangeland vegetation composition, with invasion leading to greater alien species cover and lower indigenous species richness, while clearing leads to lower alien species richness and cover and greater indigenous species richness and cover. However invasion seems to have no effect on alien species richness and overall indigenous species cover. Clearing appears to facilitate the spontaneous restoration of alien species cover and indigenous species richness within four to six years but not species composition, alien species richness and indigenous species cover. In addition my results also indicate that Prosopis invasion can lower rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity while clearing, even under heavy grazing, can substantially raise them. Clearing however does not seem to facilitate the restoration of rangeland plant canopy and basal cover and grazing capacity to pre-invasion levels within four to six years after clearing. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ek het die impak van Prosopis indringing en verwydering van indringers op ekologiese struktuur, funksie en landbou produktiwiteit in ‘n swaar beweide Nama Karoo gebied op twee skaapplase naby Beaufort-Wes in die Wes-Kaap provinsie van Suid-Afrika geëvalueer. My doelwitte was om (1) te bepaal wat die gevolge van die indringing en verwydering van indringers op die natuurlike plantegroei samestelling, diversiteit (uitheemse en inheemse spesiesrykheid) en struktuur (uitheemse en inheemse spesies bedekking) sal wees, sowel as die effek op plantegroei bedekking (kroon en basalebedekking) en landbou produktiwiteit (weidingkapasiteit), (2) die plantegroei prosesse te beskryf wat onderliggend deur die impakte van indringing en verwydering van indringers veroorsaak word, en (3) die sukses van die verwydering van indringers te evalueer deur die fasilitering van blote restorasie van ekologiese struktuur en funksie en landbou produktiwiteit in voorheen ingedringde gebiede.
