Redesigning the ‘shape’ of the local church : leaders building with applied timeless ecclesiology in the midst of prevailing culture

Humphreys, Jason 17 August 2012 (has links)
The church is facing a season of challenge in Western Europe and America, areas where once the church was strong and influential. We find, however, that the affluent suburbs in Cape Town are themselves not exempt from the challenge western culture is bringing to the church. Though there are signs of growth in some Christian sectors to inspire hope, there remains a great responsibility on the leaders of the local church today to engage this challenge. A responsibility rests on church leaders to hold firmly to the timeless message of the scriptures, and lightly to the forms of church that no longer engage a culture increasingly unimpressed with the face of modern Christianity. Within this thesis, we will attempt to outline a tenet of the western church’s ecclesiology that has been diluted in many places; this weakness has impacted the church’s ability to engage its community, as well the form and shape of the activities of the local church. Through investigating Jesus’ intention for the local church, we will shown that the church is not defined by the form of its activities, but by people’s response to the demands of the kingdom. We will show that focusing on the church’s response to the demands of the kingdom is able to be a uniting and strengthening force in the church in this season of cultural challenge. The demands of the kingdom are, therefore, to set the agenda for local church leaders, and free those leaders to redesign the form of the church’s activities to engage the local community in culturally appropriate ways. Die verhouding tussen gesag en sendingmotivering binne die Gereformeerde Kerke / The relation between authority and motivation for missionary involvement from within the reformed churches

Weyers, Mario 01 January 2002 (has links)
In this dissertation an attempt has been made to investigate the means by which God is at work in our world. The researcher has acted on the assumption that God rules in our world, but investigates the content of such a belief. The question whether God acts in our world from a basis of control, or from a motivation of shared interest is currently brought to the surface. Istrumental is the use of Critical Theory to investigate the above mentioned problem. With this instument oppressive perspectives (paternalistic views) are identified and unmasked as well as new perspectives (stewardship) implemented. Biblical stewardship seems to be a perspective on how God wants to use the local church to assist in his plan of salvation for those in need. Authority with others rather over others seems to be the stewardship strategy God wants us to participate in. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. A biblical spirituality for evangelical and charismatic churches in 21st century South Africa

Botha, Craig Frederick 12 1900 (has links)
The Scriptures, as found in the Old and New Testaments, are foundational to a genuine Christian spirituality. Among the different existing approaches to spirituality, the evangelical and charismatic churches in South Africa today need to rediscover a distinctive biblical approach to spirituality for themselves in order to facilitate the discipleship of their own members. A holistic biblical spirituality can also serve society in practical ways and challenge the perceptions and practices of a South African society which is seeking to advance without religious foundations. / Philosophy and Systematic Theology / M.Th. This calculative thinking, which is not restricted to calculations only, expresses the cybernetic mode that is always looking for the next opportunity, carried by the values of effectiveness, efficiency and performance results, that conquers the absolutism in the current season of planetary technique. Now, if the power, control and calculation, coming from Metaphysics, dominate the whole world how does it interfere with religion? Trying to understand the implications of the scarcity of meditation in religion, this research seeks to approach Heideggerian concepts as a key to the reading of the Iurdian context - Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. First presenting the Heideggerian perspective as a basis for the approximation of meditative thinking; then explaining the development of technique in theology, in order to understand the metaphysical tradition bequeathed to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God; and finally, to raise three phenomena that reveal the meditative lacking in the Iurdian context / O pensamento meditativo, que pensa o sentido do ser e justamente por isso trata de um espaço de maior intimidade, é proposto por Martin Heidegger como um contraponto ao pensamento racional, ou como ele denomina, pensamento calculador.

Begins, with a contextualization of the political, socio-cultural and economic history of Palestine (first century AD), place and context in which Mark wrote his Gospel, in which there is an account of the situation of the recipients of the message of the Kingdom. The Evangelist heads towards all people, especially those living in Palestine and its, surroundings and facing difficult moments of persecution by the Roman Empire and the current religious power. Then approaches the specific theme of the Kingdom of God engendered by Mark from the axis expression that is used in this paper: After John was arrested, came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God, saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:14-15). Emphasizes the dynamic character of the proposal from Kingdom in defense of life in all its dimensions expands to a current a reflection, life threatened by climate change / Esta tese contém um estudo sobre o Reino de Deus à luz do Evangelho de Marcos. Convertei-vos e crede no Evangelho (Mc 1,14-15).

The objective is to demonstrate that, from the discourse of Jesus on his kingdom, recorded in John 18:36, the Johannine community is a heterotopic construction both in relation to incipient rabbinic Judaism as to the Roman Empire in first century. For thus, the study was divided into three chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the Fourth Gospel, with emphasis on the Johannine community history and its Christology. The second chapter is an exploratory journey to the cosmos and the basileia from John 18:36. In the third chapter, the heterotopic aspects of the Johannine community are analyzed in relation to the world, based on the theoretical framework of Foucault. In this way, it can be shown that the Kingdom of God promotes heterotopias over time and societies, making it clear, the achievement of a critical space in relation to its world in the Johannine community, that is, a space of decisions and resignifications, capable of breaking socio-religious paradigms and change existing power relations.

The present research investigated Rede Record de Televisão’s (Record Television Network) strategic positioning in the public-access TV Brazilian market. The basic theoretical-methodological contribution to this work was the Political Economy of Communication (PEC), which was connected to other communication theories throughout the expository text. This analysis revealed that the group studied competes with SBT, standing for Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão ( Brazilian Television System), for the second place in the television scenario. However, Record TV Network maintained the second position in primetime viewership during the research. This projection is supported by the network head’s resumption of production in the television fiction and journalistic spheres. Another circumstance which influenced on Record Network strategic process was the investment derived from outside the media. This investment came from funds not common to the advertising market, transferred by Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God). According to information assessed herein, the mentioned investment would be equivalent to about R$ 400 million per year, and it is related to the purchase of predawn airtime. It has also been observed that the production pattern of the object of study considers telejournalism as the main product to shape its rising nationally. The TV network broadcasts six news programmes altogether, and the affiliates produce 4 to 5 journalistic products a day. Due to the importance of telejournalism to the network, the present investigation proposes to characterize Record TV Network’s aesthetic and technical pattern through its main journalistic product, O Jornal da Record (Record News), and through the current network’s journalism editorial concept, a factual journalism rather than a more reflective or analytical one. Thus, it could be apprehended that the ‘journalistic truths/facts’ in the news programme are based on, for instance, frequent live broadcasting parts in conventional events; and, also, on the predominance of reports on the Police and Public Safety events.
