The second decade of the third millennium is brought to an end, and with it comes a conservative bent in the political scenario. In Brazil, the power of the BOB (Bullet, Ox, and Bible) parliamentary bench and presidential Jair Bolsanaro’s popularity attests that. This scenario is in part the result of the growing influence of Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal churches in the political arena, with a general convergence between the ideological positions of evangelicals and their family values. In order to understand this phenomenon, a case study was made of the family myth of a Neo-Pentecostal denomination in particular: the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, the greatest religious phenomenon in Brazil in the last 30 years, taking as the object of study the literature about and by their leader, Edir Macedo, and members of his family. The theoretical frameworks of the study were: the ideas of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, analytical psychology’s founder and the sociology of Brazilian neopentecostalism. The IURDian mythology was mainly understood from the study on the IURDian family myth, divided into: the myth of the hero, the myth of the Eternal Feminine and the family myth properly said, a theoretical construct still unexplored in the Jungian community. Other interpreters of the myth were also included: Simone de Beauvoir, Joseph Campbell, MirceaEliade and James Hillman. A brief history was given of the three waves of Pentecostalism in the country and the trajectory of the IURD, from its foundation to the inauguration of Solomon’s Temple. The analysis focused on Edir Macedo’s idealized profiles of the man, woman and family of God. Some characteristics of IURDian theology: the submission of women, reason over emotion, the promotion of wealth and the constant clash against other religions, with evidence that the family myth of the Universal Church is a postmodern adaptation of the “traditional” Brazilian family. It’s a patriarchal family whose arrangement puts the personal myth of the father as the central myth of the family. This traditional family model helps IURD’s female churchgoers to recover family unity and to be valued in the face of economic and social exclusion. The contradictory positions of pastors, laborers and even the Bishop himself in the face of their family myth were also discussed.

Adaptações da fé : análise antropológica da transnacionalização da Igreja Universal entre Brasil e Argentina / Faith adaptations: anthropological analysis of the universal church transnationalization in Brazil and Argentina

Tadvald Batista, Marcelo January 2013 (has links)
In recent decades, arising from the new world order, flows of practices, symbols, capital, people, religions and all sorts of cultural goods which move constantly at a fast pace between different countries were intensified. In regard to religion, the transit of religions between their national and original cultural context to a foreign context entails different adaptation strategies, which reshape these religious fields. This study focuses on the ways religions originated in Brazil adapt to a foreign context, more specifically on the strategies put into practice, on the resemantizations produced and on the dialogues with the local culture established by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in its process of transnationalization to Argentina. Thus, the thesis examines the formation of transnational religious communities from the new configurations that can be seen today in transnational space formed between Brazil and Argentina and the dialogue between their national societies, historical, political and cultural issues related to the religious field which enable the flows discussed. With the purpose of analyzing the Universal Church in Argentina, this thesis evaluates its presence abroad in such perspectives as, its relationship with the surrounding societies and its performance at these sites through an ethnography of media and of routine in temples and rituals as well as its relationship with other religions, such as catholicism and religions of African origin. This research was conducted between 2007 and 2012 in Brazil (Brasilia and Porto Alegre) and Argentina (Buenos Aires and metropolitan area).

An examination of the missional ecclesiology of the 'Emerging Church Movement'

Skead, Trevor Henry 15 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the missional ecclesiology of the Emerging Church Movement and its relationship to Evangelicalism. The rise of post-Christendom, post-modernism and the increasing marginalisation of the church in Western Culture has created a situation where it needs to ask the basic missiological questions of its own identity and structures. In contrast to many within traditional Evangelicalism, the Emerging Church Movement views these changes as a positive development and, in a social context much more akin to that of the early church, an opportunity to rediscover the essential nature of its calling as Church. It is in a narrative reading of Scripture and understanding of Jesus' proclamation of the kingdom of God that the ECM believes the answers are to be found. As a result, the ECM finds itself working through a gradual process of dismantling and reconstructing the faith of their Evangelical heritage as they reflect on the meaning of the gospel as they see it expressed in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and His interpretation of the Old Testament narrative. For the ECM, the gospel is much bigger than merely personal salvation and is best understood as God's great and gracious mission in the world of making new all that has been corrupted by sin and evil. Missional churches realise that they have been invited to participate with God in his redemptive mission and formulate their identity, structures and values accordingly. The ECM engages in intentional , subversive ministry from its new place at the margins of society flowing from the realisation that mission is not an activity to be carried out by members of the church in certain contexts, but rather the essential character and calling of the church community wherever it may exist. / Dissertation (MA(Theol))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

In Brazilian contemporary formulation of these dimensions we have combined the entry of new actors and social institutions. In the case of this specific work, the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) has as its most representative founder Bishop Macedo, who since the 1970s has been building and expanding the spaces in the Brazilian religious life. Gift of various media, ta king its greatest Record brand, one sees a speech that is embodied by the significant increase in believers. However, what we show in this paper is not the perspective of the expanding Church, we analyze the church speech and its implications for ethical and legal nature of the damage caused to the faithful who have not had their promises fulfilled in the marketing logic graces due rites and practices dictated by the UCKG. Besides the legal issues contextualize the social context that is inserted speeches, damage, but mainly its logical action. This implies not only deal with the marketing aspect of the faith, but to include this practice in a society model based on consumerist values which the most fundamental values are lost due to the most basic needs and, above all, respect for moral ethical principles that guide human dignity.

This World or Another? : Mapping Modern Theologies

Janson, Jens January 2021 (has links)
In view of the complexity characterizing the contemporary discipline of academic theology, there is a need for functional models. Against the background of significant developments in twentieth-century theology, this thesis attempts to develop an analytical model which can make sense of some of the complexity characterizing this field. More specifically, the aim is to produce a model which can be used to distinguish between and relate different theological positions to each other at a meta-level. This is achieved through the elaboration of a two-dimensional typology composed of four quadrants representing distinct theological orientations. The proposed model and its analytical categories form the basis for a discussion of some key figures and themes in modern theology, with a particular emphasis on eschatologically oriented theologies. Finally, on the basis of preceding discussions, a case is made for theology’s ability to fulfill a vital cultural-critical role in a secular context.

The calling of the Reformed Churches in South Africa in the moral renewal of the urban community in South Africa

Sekhaulelo, Motshine Amos January 2013 (has links)
The main aim of this study was to investigate the prophetic calling of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (RCSA) in the moral regeneration of the South African urban community. The method of research followed in this study was to study primary and secondary sources, as well as appropriate biblical teachings and theological principles relevant to this study and to systematise the information. An analysis was provided of the main problems regarding moral decay besetting the South African urban community and the main challenges this moral decay poses for the RSCA were identified. A strategy the RCSA should implement in tackling these challenges was devised and a number of practical projects the RCSA could undertake at congregational level to concretise the strategy were discussed. The study confirmed that the Church has an important role to play as the driving agent for moral regeneration of the South African urban community. It was pointed out that the moral regeneration of the urban community in South Africa cannot be left to the government. The main reason is that morality cannot be legislated. However, when the love of God transforms the lives of people, it changes the heart, heals moral decay, provides strength to overcome temptation and gives the desire to reach out to people (friends, relatives’ neighbours, strangers and even enemies) in true love. The congregation’s main task with regard to moral regeneration is therefore to be clear about God’s mission, to discern what God is doing in the community and to serve his mission in practical ways. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / unrestricted

Etická hlediska Lukášova evangelia / Ethical Aspects of the Gospel of Luke

Heinrichová, Marie January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis is concerning the ethical aspect of Saint Luke's Gospel. The focus is on Jesus, who is shown as an example of ethical life and the basis of his moral teaching. These teachings are penance, correct property usage, loving fellowman, disciples, prayer and reversing the fate in connection to the welfare of poor people. This thesis also looks at God's kingdom and the ethical ramification which it yields. The moral teaching of Jesus is the subject matter of Evangelism and therefore Luke shows Jesus as a preacher on a Great Journey. The second part of this work is dedicated to the analysis of The Sermon on the Plain and parables about the Good Samaritan which graphically illustrate moral command and its practical application in life. The selected texts have been analyzed in the framework of individual versus in relationship to the whole teaching in which they are placed (in context to the whole work). This diploma thesis is based upon descriptive methods and analysis of text.

Ekleziologie Tomáše Bavorovského (1562) / Ecclesiology Tomáš Bavorovský († 1562)

Havrlant, Jaroslav January 2013 (has links)
Charles University in Prague, Catholic Theological Faculty Thesis, Prague 2013 ABSTRACT Ecclesiology of Tomáš Bavorovský († 1562) Jaroslav Havrlant Catholic preacher Tomáš Bavorovský (Thomas of Bavorov) is still a quite unknown personality of Bohemian renaissance. He is the representative of the Church loyal to the Pope in Rome shortly before the end of the Trident council and the arrival of Jesuits to Prague. The result of my study aimed at his ecclesiological approach is my thesis, which contains five chapters. The first three chapters are concerned with common historical facts of his time as well as with life and work of the preacher. The others focus on his interpretation of the Church and the Kingdom of God. The first chapter describes specific situation of Bohemian reformation, which was different from the neighboring countries because of its Hussite tradition and Utraquistic Church. Tomáš Bavorovský worked mostly in Catholic south and west Bohemian towns (Bavorov, Český Krumlov, Jindřichův Hradec, Plzeň). Therefore I describe in short also their religious history in this chapter. The part concerning the personality of the preacher starts with describing him as a writer. In chronological sequences it presents the writers who have written about him. Even though Tomáš Bavorovský was quite famous author...

Dein Reich komme : eine missionstheologische Arbeit über den Zusammenhang zwischen Reich-Gottes-Verständnis und missionarischer Gemeindepraxis am Beispiel August Hermann Francke / Thy kingdom come : a missiological study on the relationship between the concept of the Kingdom of God and missionary church practice using the example of August Hermann Francke

Schultze, David Kurt Hilmar 11 1900 (has links)
This study shows how the concept of the Kingdom of God has influenced the theology and missionary church practice of August Hermann Francke. By means of a literature study, the concept of the Kingdom of God in Halle Pietism is researched from a perspective of mission theology. In addition to that the church practice of Francke will be presented from a perspective of mission history. Both points of view are linked to each other so that the relations between the Kingdom of God and church practice are worked out. It is obvious that the view of the Kingdom of God has decisively influenced the framework, the point of reference, human participation, the holistic approach, as well as the range of missionary activity in Halle. On the basis of the research results, conclusions and practical implications for today’s discussion about the concept of the Kingdom of God and missionary practice are given. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. The ongoing coherence and otherness of God's works of creation, reconciliation, renewal and consummation of human beings and the cosmic universe

Hearn, Louisa Jacoba 30 November 2005 (has links)
In this dissertation we explore the concept that the works of God continue in a creative and coherent continuum from the portrayal in Genesis 1 to the description of their consummation in Revelation through the dynamic broad movement of the Kingdom of God that moved through Israel and the other nations of the world and through the churches and other institutions as well as in the Bible, in the experiences of humanity and in the vast non-human creation. Therefore creation, redemption, renewal and consummation are seen to be linked in a process which is not confined to the usual theological pointers of the Church and the Bible. Churches and the Bible are signs and instruments of the Kingdom of God amongst and in the many universes and not the only signs and instruments of the Kingdom of God in and amongst the many universes. The importance of the coherence between each work of God, the otherness of each work and the ongoing character of God's works demonstrates itself in the impact of faith on human experience and on the very existence of human beings. The concept of developing a wholesome person with a fivesome awareness is developed, this being an awareness of a human beings creatureliness, an awareness of their sinful tendencies of doing damage to God, the self as being created by God and all other creatures of God, an awareness of the salvific and reconciliatory power of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ and an awareness of the renovating and renewal power of the Spirit of Pentecost which is carrying and guiding the process of the fivesome awareness in our minds, our experiences and our living into afterlife towards the consummation of all things in the new heaven and the new earth. The ongoing experience of anticipatory fragments and moments of meaning and significance breaking in from the future into our current life, bridges God's Kingdom works in the future through reflective understanding of faith experience with our everyday experience as human beings. The basic point and the thrust of this dissertation is that of a `both...and' and not an `either...or' relationship between human beings and their experience of God as Creator, their own falling into sin, God as Reconciliator in Christ, God the Holy Spirit as the Renewer and Renovator of all things unto afterlife and the creation of the new heaven and the new earth - the whole ongoing process of God's works is attested in the Biblical texts and attested in the foursome and inclusive experiential awareness of God's works in our daily experience by the Holy Spirit. / Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics / M.Th.
