Lopes, Francisco Valter 13 December 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T14:27:20Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Francisco Valter Lopes.pdf: 1319873 bytes, checksum: f0a158caba2557f3448964de0c7c9677 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-12-13 / The painful and violent death suffered by Jesus was consequence of his prophetic acts, his religious doctrines opposed to the Temple role and to Moses‟ Law and the announcement of the Kingdom. The significance of Jesus of Nazareth‟s death can not be apart from his existence and his mission as Son of God. Jesus of Nazareth surrenders to the Father on behalf of his brothers/sisters and for the reason that will provide them with abundant life. The expression died for us‟ demonstrates that the meaning of Jesus‟ death is understood as a solidary act provided to humanity. This continuous act of Jesus has dictated all his mission, realized in the name of God Father and his Spirit, revealed in his message. His death must be understood as an act of fraternal solidarity, while at the same time, of liberation, for such was a symmetric event with his own life. Jesus has taken to the cross the weight of our sins. In this way of revelation from God, we see his suffering and death not as a failure of a human project, on the contrary, as the Son of God‟s passion which brings salvation. The meaning of Jesus‟s death does not reveal us a cruel God, demanding from his Son an endless sacrifice in order to redeem humanity from its sins and bring it to a free, fulfilling life and in that sense saved. The reflection about the meaning of the death of Jesus of Nazareth implies the perception of the lack of goodness in reality and the desire to correct the human injustices which bring death and lead to the cross. Therefore, Jesus‟ death gives us the possibility to assume our human condition with a glimmer of hope. We have in his death, which wasn‟t for himself, but for us, the strength to preserve the meaning of our existence and to support our encouragement for the reality of the Kingdom, inaugurated by us and definitely sealed with the death on the cross for us and for our salvation / A morte dolorosa e violenta que Jesus sofreu foi consequência de sua atuação profética, sua concepção religiosa oposta ao papel do Templo e à Lei de Moisés e seu anúncio do Reino.

Jesus as 'radical social prophet' : an appraisal of Richard Horsley's Jesus and the spiral of violence (1987) / Banda, S.

Banda, Simon Vilex January 2012 (has links)
Traditionally, Jesus and the contents of the Bible have always been thought of as exclusively concerned with spiritual and religious matters. The topic of Jesus and the social and political dimensions of the Gospel is therefore still a controversial idea for many Christians. Responses to the notion of Jesus as a social and political figure range from ignorance to avoidance and even resistance. Nevertheless scholars continue, in various ways, to explore and integrate the relationship between the religious, social and political dimensions of Jesus' words and actions. The aim of this study is to critically evaluate the notion of Jesus as 'radical social prophet‘ as set out in Horsley‘s book Jesus and the Spiral of Violence (1987). The purpose is to establish the historical validity of this notion and to determine its significance and implications for contemporary Christian reflection, teaching and discipleship. The study describes the development and impact of the social sciences on the interpretation of the New Testament. It also explains Horsley‘s presuppositions and method. An analysis of Horsley's construction of the historical, social and political context of Jesus‘ first century world is made. Horsley‘s view of the Kingdom of God is also discussed. The grammatico–historical examination of Horsley‘s reading of selected key biblical and extra–biblical texts forms a crucial part of the investigation. An appraisal of Horsley‘s notion of Jesus as 'radical social prophet‘ is made and its implications noted. The study finds adequate grounds for seeing Jesus fulfilling the role of a 'radical social prophet‘ in the same manner as the Old Testament prophets. The conclusion reached is that Horsley‘s (1987) notion of Jesus as 'radical social prophet‘, while inadequate to account for the theological nature and mission of Jesus, is nevertheless useful to highlight the often overlooked social and political dimensions of Jesus and the Gospels. / Thesis (M.A. (New Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Also addresses the ritualistic processes that promote the construction of a typical Pentecostal identity and their way of being in the world, specifically their sense of work and vocation, in Weberian terms, which lead them to increase the faithful quota year after year. This said "way of being" brings the peculiarity of inserting the individual as part of the world and, even more, its transformer, contradicting thus the historical perspective of evangelical denominations that precede it.

Mormons and the World's Fair 1893: A Study of Religious and Cultural Agency and Transformation

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: My dissertation project, Mormons at the World's Fair: A Study of Religious and Cultural Agency and Transformation looks at a pivotal period of transition within the American religious and political national culture (1880-1907). Using Mormonism as an important focal point of national controversy and cultural change, this dissertation looks at the interconnections between Mormon transitions and the larger national transformations then under way in what historians call the "progressive" era. Prominent scholars have recognized the 1893 World's Fair as an important moment that helped initiate the "dawning" of religious pluralism in America. This national response to American religious diversity, however, is limited to a nineteenth-century historiographical framework, which made real religious pluralism in the next century more difficult. Bringing together into one narrative the story of the anti-polygamy crusades of the 1880s, the ambivalent presence (and non presence) of Mormonism at the World's Fair of 1893, and the drawn-out US Senate Hearings and ultimate victory of Mormon apostle and Senator Reed Smoot in 1907, this dissertation offers new insights into the meaning and limitations of American religious liberty, the dynamics of minority agency, as well as a deeper understanding of America's developing national identity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Religious Studies 2012

Melchisedec Borré 25 August 2014 (has links)
This research sought to identify the effective relationship between the theory and practice of the neo-Pentecostal discourse regarding the diaconal work, specifically by the IURD. The following presents the general context of religion, its characteristics, types and main elements, highlighting the religious phenomenon and the issue of sacred in modern society. It describes the neo-Pentecostalism from its origin, its history, growth factors, the main theological aspects in Brazilian scenario and the Prosperity Theology; it analyses how it is developed the relation between faith and capitalism from IURD, it describes in religiousness perspective the diaconal work, its goals, dimensions and purposes, and identifies from bibliographic research, how the diakonia is really established in IURD social practice, highlighting its relationship with social, politics and cultural issues from Brazilian society. The bibliographic research is descriptive, bounded to the work of religious actions from IURD, and it was developed with the application of quantitative method, because it enables to obtain information related to the theme. Based on the results, we can conclude that the diaconal practice, in IURD perspective, presents certain conceptual ambiguity that, even having a significant amount of actions developed by different social projects, it doesnt effectively highlight a diaconal work, considered real and objective and that applies to the impoverished sectors of the society where there is insertion of the institution.
