(in English): Since its foundation, the kingdom of Chosŏn has been culturally and politically connected with the Ming China from which Chosŏn adopted written codes, penal system and administrative structure. At the same time, the legal system of the two states was not identical for various reasons. This differentiation has been increasing over the course of several centuries. The 18th century saw the greatest rise in terms of criminal legislation, and some of today's scholars view this period as the advent of humanism and enlightenment in Korea. This diploma thesis deals with the historical development of criminal law and written codes during the Chosŏn period (14th - 18th century), and with the issue of the Korean state penal system as it was at the end of the 18th century.

The Korean Tattoo Culture : An Historical Overview on the Development and Shift of Perception on Tattoos in Korean Society / Den koreanska tatueringskulturen : En historisk översikt över utveckling och förändring av uppfattningen om tatueringar i det koreanska samhälletGlietsch, Friederike January 2020 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the development and shifts in perception of the tattoo practice. For centuries, the negative image of tattoos has been manifested in Korean society and has only shown visible changes in the past two decades. In recent years, the topic of tattoos in South Korea has become notably more popular and broadly discussed. To give a structured and detailed historical review of the tattoo custom in Korea, two articles in Korean by Kim Hyŏng-jung (2013) and Yi Tong-ch’ŏl (2007) served as main sources. By conducting a semisystematic review with a qualitative approach, the accessed data was examined, compared, and synthesized. The results show that the tattoo practice, although still not fully accepted by all, has gradually developed into its own culture in contemporary South Korean society. / Syftet med denna studie är att analysera utvecklingen och det varierande synsätt på tatueringar. I århundraden har den negativa bilden av tatueringar festats i det koreanska samhället och bara under de senaste två decennierna har en märkbar förändring skett. De senaste åren har tatueringar blivit mer populära och diskuterade. För att ge en strukturerad och detaljerad bild av tatueringar i Sydkorea har två artiklar på koreanska använts som huvudkälla, Kim Hyŏng-jung (2013) och Yi Tong-ch’ŏl (2007). Genom en semi-systematisk översikt med en kvalitativ metod har insamlad data blivit granskad, jämförd och sammankopplad. Resultatet visar att tatueringar fortfarande inte är helt accepterade av alla men att de gradvist har utvecklats till en egen kultur i Sydkoreas samtida samhälle.

Family pictures : representations of the family in contemporary Korean cinemaAn, Ji-yoon January 2017 (has links)
The family has always been a central narrative theme in cinema. Korean cinema has been no exception, where the family has proved to be a popular subject since its earliest days. Yet Western scholarship on Korean cinema has given little attention to this dominant theme, preferring to concentrate on the film industry's recent revival and its blockbusters. Scholarship in Korea and in the Korean language, on the hand, has continuously discussed some of the major cinematic works on the family. However, such literature has tended to be in the form of articles discussing one or two particular works. A comprehensive study of the family in contemporary Korean cinema therefore remains absent both in Korean and in English. This thesis is an attempt to provide such a work, bringing together films on the family and writings on them in both Western and Korean scholarships, as well as filling the gaps where certain trends and patterns have gone undetected. How are the changes in the understanding of the family or in the roles of individual family members reworked, imagined, or desired in films? Taking this question as the starting point of the research, each chapter explores a separate theme: transformations in the structure of the family; faltering patriarchy and fatherhood; motherhood and the extremity of maternal love; and certain children's experiences of the family. The first chapter detects a general move away from the traditional patriarchal nuclear family and an interest in depicting alternative families, exploring shifting family forms in contemporary society and the public discourses surrounding them. The second chapter highlights the contradictory ways that the father has been illustrated in films during and after the IMF crisis. The third chapter explores a branch of recent thrillers that depicts mothers as dark and dangerous characters, offering an interesting cultural framing to the multiple perceptions of the mother figure in contemporary society. Finally, the last chapter aims to extend representations of the 'Korean family' to include films by/about those currently living outside of Korea, namely Korean emigrants and adoptees.

Korean Bodybuilding : Cultural Hybrid or Instance of Cultural Homogenization?Mosesson, Marcus January 2018 (has links)
This study deals with the trend of male bodybuilding in Korea and investigates the motivations and aesthetic ideals of Korean male bodybuilders. The author of the study uses the few hitherto academic research works on the subject and tries to give an overview of the history of Korean bodybuilding. Besides, the author has conducted a digital survey in order to collect answers from Korean male bodybuilders about their motivations, aesthetic ideals, etc. The aesthetic ideals of the bodybuilders are then compared to the male aesthetic ideals of modern Korean society and also discussed in relation to the somatic beliefs of NeoConfucianism. The findings are thereafter analyzed in context of two theses of the cultural consequences of globalization, namely homogenization and hybridization. The study concludes that Korean bodybuilders are more concerned with the arduous process of sculpting their physiques rather than the look of them themselves. Although the research material on Korean bodybuilding is scarce and the responses to the conducted survey are small in terms of both numbers and scale, it may be suggested that Korean bodybuilding appears to be an instance of the hybridization thesis. Lastly, the study emphasizes the need for more extensive research on the subject in question. / Denna studie behandlar ämnet koreansk bodybuilding för män och undersöker dels vad som motiverar koreanska kroppsbyggare att utöva sin sport, dels vad deras estetiska ideal är. Studiens författare använder sig av den begränsade befintliga forskningen inom ämnet och försöker även ge en överblick över koreansk bodybuildings historia. Författaren har dessutom utfört en digital undersökning för att samla in svar från koreanska kroppsbyggare om deras drivkrafter, estetiska ideal, etc. Dessa ideal jämförs sedan med det moderna koreanska samhällets motsvarigheter och diskuteras även utifrån de somatiska föreställningarna inom neokonfucianismen. Studiens forskningsresultat analyseras sedan utifrån två teorier om globaliseringens kulturella konsekvenser, närmare bestämt homogenisering respektive hybridisering. Trots det knappa forskningsmaterialet kring koreansk bodybuilding är studiens slutsats att koreanska kroppsbyggare är mer måna om den mödosamma processen i att bygga sina kroppar, snarare än hur dessa ser ut i sig själva. Studien suggererar också att koreansk bodybuilding verkar vara ett exempel på hybridiseringsteorin. Slutligen betonar studien behovet av mer utförlig forskning kring ämnet i fråga.
