Analysis of the effects of bone marrow mononuclear cells transplantation in mice submitted to electrolytic lesion of the dorsal hippocampus.

Several studies suggest that stem cells from bone marrow may be useful in treating lesions of the nervous tissue. This study investigated if bone marrow cell therapy would be able to modify the behavioral effects of lesions in the hippocampus. Bone marrow mononuclear cells labeled with the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) were transplanted into C57BL/6 mice which had the dorsal hippocampus damaged by bilateral electrolytic lesion. The results of the behavioral assessment in the elevated plus-maze showed that the hippocampal lesion produced anxiolysis, an effect that was attenuated in transplanted animals. Immunohistochemical analysis of brain tissue revealed, however, a limited presence of EGFP+ cells into the brains of injured animals. Given the non-recovery of the tissue cytoarchitecture, it is believed that the observed benefits on the behavior resulted from a paracrine effect of the mononuclear cells, which possibly helped in the action of endogenous mechanisms for partial reimbursement of the hippocampal functions.

Starting from the life and work of Jo?o da Cruz e Sousa, we try to discuss how some issues raised by him in the late nineteenth century, still can help us reflect on the ethnic-racial relations in Brazilian society. This research aimed to compare my story, the narrative of my students, considered here as a collective subject, and the story of the poet Jo?o da Cruz e Sousa. The interweaving of narratives mentioned, despite the spatio-temporal difference that separates them, sought the possible dialogues that can help us to think how racism still holds and updates daily at school? How prejudice, racism and discrimination are materialized in the production of inequalities within the school environment? How prejudice, racism and discrimination are materialized in the production of inequalities within the school environment? Thus, this study dialogue with authors such as Muniz Sodre (2000; 2010), Kabengele Munanga (2006), Nilma Lino Gomes (2003; 2012), Frantz Fanon (2008) and other scholars in the field of ethnic-racial relations, articulating them with studies of Modernity/Coloniality Group (2007; 2008), Hanna Arendt (2007) also helped us develop some issues with the concepts of "public space" and "appearance". To connect the narratives we rely on the research of Joseph Valter Pereira (2000, 2006 and 2010), Jorge Larrosa (1994; 2014), Walter Benjamin (1985), Leonor Arfuch (2010) and also Luciano Bedin da Costa (2010). About the life and work of the poet, we consulted bibliographical studies, documents such as newspapers, magazines literary critic of the late nineteenth century etc, that somehow relate to the researched problem. As narratives of the students we consider the set of texts and conversations that took place within the school environment from activities or situations involving ethnic-racial relations. Furthermore, we assume here the political challenge of exercising an essay written in order to problematize the hegemonic aesthetic as the only way in knowledge production.

Agriculture and society in arid lands: a Hohokam case study

Fish, Suzanne K. January 1993 (has links)
The interplay between social and productive spheres in arid land agrarian societies with non-mechanized technologies is exemplified in a case study of the prehistoric Hohokam Indians of southern Arizona. In addition to chapters unique to the dissertation, ten papers are included that were published during the period of doctoral enrollment. Results from a variety of investigative techniques are combined to characterize Hohokam agriculture and its relationship to societal forms and dynamics. Among these are archaeological survey and settlement pattern analysis, technical studies of prehistoric fields, palynological analysis for reconstruction of agricultural environments, and comparison with methods and concepts employed by historic and modern traditional farmers in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Hohokam farming is examined at sequential scales, beginning with the setting, layout, and yield of individual fields and ending with comparison between Hohokam agricultural configurations and those of other arid land cultures. Topics receiving emphasis within the broader dissertation theme are the nature of Hohokam agrarian landscapes, the recently recognized role of cultivated agave in subsistence systems, and the social and economic framework for agricultural decision-making and strategies.

Recharge characteristics of an effluent dominated stream near Tucson, Arizona

Lacher, Laurel Jane,1964- January 1996 (has links)
Almost 90% of the treated sewage effluent processed by the two treatment plants serving the greater Tucson area is available for passive recharge through the Santa Cruz River streambed north of Tucson. In the absence of any major disturbance of the effluent channel, the recharge capacity of the streambed materials decreases over time as microbial activity, and possibly suspended sediments settling out of solution, act to clog the surficial sediments under the effluent stream. Effluent stream transmission-loss measurements made over the period from November 1994 to August 1995 provided data used to determine the average vertical hydraulic conductivity of the low-flow channel in the study reach through simulations using the computer model known as KINEROS2. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (KSAT) served as the calibration parameter in the model. The appropriate KSAT value was chosen for each set of field data by matching the observed and simulated downstream hydrographs for the study reach. KSAT values were corrected for viscosity changes resulting from changing average daily surface water temperatures over the study period. Saturated hydraulic conductivity values for the effluent stream channel ranged from a maximum of 37 mm/hr in January, 1995, following several major winter storms, to a minimum of 11 mm/hr in August, 1995, after a nearly six-month interstorm period. The saturated hydraulic conductivity values decay exponentially with time after the last major winter storm. The mathematical model describing this decay may be used to estimate effluent recharge rates under similar future meteorological and climatological conditions.

Shewey, Janice Ann 08 April 2010 (has links)
This M.A. thesis consists of a close-textual reading of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s four sets of villancicos dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (1676, 1679, 1685 and 1690), with a special focus on Sor Juana’s marianism and a contrast with Juan Correa’s painting, La Asunción de la Virgen (1689). This thesis will cover Sor Juana’s innovation in her representation of Mary as a model of femininity, Mary’s creative abilities, the crowning of Mary, Mary as a dwelling for God, Sor Juana’s feminization of the divine, Mary’s Assumption itself, masculine aspects and professions attributed to Mary, and Sor Juana’s identification with the Virgen.

Hermida Martín, Yanira 31 January 2012 (has links)
Thesis title: WOMEN AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE PROVINCE OF SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE.1931-1975. HOUSEWIVES, COMRADES AND MARGINALIZED. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the presence of women in the dynamics of social change that occurred in the western islands of the Canary Archipelago during the Second Republic, the Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship. We studied the presence of women in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife between 1931 and 1975. There are two main stages: in the first place the Second Republic, and its impact among women in the islands (performing an analysis comparing four ideal types representing four understandings of femininity, modem women, working c1ass, Catholics and Falangists) and in the second place the Francoist dictatorship since the military coup of 36, at which time the new regime is set in the archipelago (studying women's participation in various associations, standing out one called Sección Femenina). To complete the feminine reality of the studied historical period, we investigated women who were marginalized (government opponents, prostitutes, etc.) on their way through the provincial prison of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Special attention is paid to the socioeconomic asymmetries existing in the Canary Islands population of the first half of the twentieth century, to understand the reality of multiple and variable inequalities faced by the island women in this historical period, characterized by profound social conflicts and major changes within the sphere of politics, economics and socio-culture. It also discusses the presence of women at different social classes, the development of patriarchy within a chieftainship system and increasingly repressive (especially after the military uprising of 1936) and, therefore, the inequality and violence of a kind on another, exercising their power of repression and domination over all the women. For the preparation of this research have been consulted various sources in the Provincial Historic Archive of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (collection of the "Sección Femenina", records of inmates in the provincial prison, series of civil government, court records for the Repression of Freemasonry and Communism, etc..) municipal and parish archives, insular press, and so on.
