Women’s agency in living apart together: constraint, strategy and vulnerability

Duncan, Simon January 2015 (has links)
Recent research suggests that women can use living apart together (LAT) for a reflexive and strategic undoing of the gendered norms of cohabitation. In this article we examine this assertion empirically, using a representative survey from Britain in 2011 and follow-up interviews. First, we find little gender differentiation in practices, expectations, or attitudes about LAT, or reasons for LAT. This does not fit in with ideas of undoing gender. Secondly, in examining how women talk about LAT in relation to gender, we distinguish three groups of ‘constrained’, ‘strategic’ and ‘vulnerable’ female interviewees. All valued the extra space and time that LAT could bring, many welcomed some release from traditional divisions of labour, and some were glad to escape unpleasant situations created by partnership with men. However, for the constrained and vulnerable groups LAT was second best, and any relaxation of gendered norms was seen as incidental and inconsequential to their major aim, or ideal, of the ‘proper family’ with cohabitation and marriage. Rather, their agency in achieving this was limited by more powerful agents, or was a reaction to perceived vulnerability. While the strategic group showed more purposeful behaviour in avoiding male authority, agency remained relational and bonded. Overall we find that women, at least in Britain, seldom use LAT to purposefully or reflexively undo gender. Equally, LAT sometimes involves a reaffirmation of gendered norms. LAT is a multi-faceted adaption to circumstances where new autonomies can at the same time incorporate old subordinations, and new arrangements can herald conventional family forms.

[en] COHABITATION EXPERIENCE DURING THE PANDEMIC: REPERCUSSIONS ON CONJUGALITY / [pt] EXPERIÊNCIA DE COABITAÇÃO DURANTE A PANDEMIA: REPERCUSSÕES NA CONJUGALIDADE

LETICIA BANDEIRA DE M DA F COSTA 09 May 2024 (has links)
[en] The present study aimed to understand the impact of cohabitation on the conjugal experience of individuals who chose to live together during the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, a qualitative research was carried out, in which seven participants aged between 25 and 32 were interviewed, all from the State of Rio de Janeiro. The data was analyzed according to the content analysis method, in its categorical aspect. The results were presented in two papers. The first paper aimed to comprehend how the experience of living together with a romantic partner during the pandemic has influenced the conception of marriage. Therefore, the categories discussed in the first paper were: pandemic as a motive for cohabitation, perception of commitment, and marriage conception, broken down into the subcategories creating family income and sharing everyday life; conflicts, broken down into the subcategories differences between partners, time spent together and overload of domestic tasks. The second paper aimed to study the conflicts and the resolution strategies that emerged during the process of cohabitation of individuals who moved together with their significant other during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus the categories discussed were: conflicts, broken down into the subcategories differences between partners, time spent together and overload of domestic tasks, and conflict resolutions strategies, broken down into the subcategories appreciation of personal differences, division of domestic space and new arrangements of household chores. The results showed that cohabitation during the pandemic had an impact on the conception of marriage, especially regarding the interviewees perception of their relationships. Furthermore, it was observed that the conflicts experienced by the participants were related to cohabitation and the pandemic.

Gagnon, Guillaume 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis focuses on intergenerational cohabitation in multi-lodging dwellings (duplexes, triplexes and such) in Montreal. Considering the extreme residential proximity involved, this form of habitation is defined as a strategy of family solidarity. More specifically, the motivations, the day-to-day operation and the challenges of this form of living are at the core of the thesis. The specificity of this form of residential strategy concerns its deep interconnection with Montreal’s built form, which contains a high number of “plexes” throughout its territory, which facilitates intergenerational cohabitation. The method consisted of interviewing ten families on their use of this residential strategy. The canvas of the interviews was chronological in order to emphasize the idea of a “project” that is sometimes inherent to intergenerational cohabitation. This way, the different steps leading to this form of habitation have been identified. The two principal objectives were to outline the process leading to intergenerational cohabitation and to highlight the possibilities of solidarity permitted by the day-to-day side of intergenerational cohabitation. Three questions guided the analysis of the participants’ speech. First, what are their motivations? Second, how is their daily routine affected by the extreme residential proximity? Third, what are the challenges of this form of living? The results show many advantages of this way of living, such as a faster access to ownership and a greater sense of security for elders. Although, some disadvantages have also been observed, especially around the independence of the tenants. Independence is the main way individuals express those disadvantages. On one hand, they wish to keep a maximum of their independence, and on the other hand, they are aware of the necessity to limit it to ensure the cohabitation.

Les doctrines institutionnelles des Responsables Politiques Français vis à vis de la notion de Cohabitation au cours de la 5ème République : 1958-2017 / The institutional doctrines of the French political officials with respect to the concept of cohabitation during the 5th Republic : 1958-2017

Dromard, Michaël 11 December 2018 (has links)
The thesis recalls the many positions of the French political officials with respect to the concept of cohabitation during years 1958-2017 and highlights their institutional contradictions which appear according to situations and political circumstances given. It thus emphasizes the many institutional divergences of the right-hand side on the subject : the cohabitationnist refusal of the Gaullist and Pompidolian regims, the Giscardian assent of 1978, the division within the right during Mitterrand years between 1981 and 1995, the union in the denunciation during the first mandate of Jacques Chirac between 1995 and 2002 and finally a succession of contradictions during years 2002-2017. The thesis also records certain institutional divergences on the side of the socialist left : a cohabitationnist will during years 1958-1981, a serious reserve during years 1981-1986 then 1988-1993, a cohabitationnist satisfaction during years 1997-2002 and also a succession of contradictions during years 2002-2017. The thesis shows so the way in which the political leaders have evolved their institutional doctrines according to situations and political circumstances given and also tries to explain their numerous personal strategies and their institutional reflections with respect to the cohabitation.
