Developing a scenario-based coral reef ecosystem model to assist management following mass coral mortality events

Glen Holmes Unknown Date (has links)
Coral reefs are experiencing increasing levels of stress due to climate change, overfishing, coastal development and nutrient runoff from agriculture to name a few. They are however, economically vital ecosystems in terms of both their income generating capacity and as a source of food for millions of people around the world. This predicament emphasises the need for effective ecosystem management to be able to balance the benefits of coral reefs with the inherent stressors associated with people utilising their resources. It is particularly important given the potential large scale impacts associated with climate change such as mass coral bleaching events. Similarly, much of the need for direct management of coral reefs exists in developing countries where the resources, information, and technology are limited or unavailable for such a task. This places them, in particular, at the high end of management uncertainty and impact vulnerability. Accordingly, there is a pronounced need to improve this capacity to understand coral reef ecosystem function and to use this to better predict the overall systems level outcome of management options. This thesis has sought to improve our understanding of key ecological elements of coral reef ecosystems and to build on this new knowledge to produce a widely applicable ecosystem model that will allow managers to better understand and predict the outcomes of their actions. Coral reef ecosystem behaviour is far from understood in its entirety and there are many facets that require detailed further investigations to be able to more confidently predict ecosystem response to any given disturbance. To enhance the current understanding of coral reef ecosystems prior to the model development, investigations were undertaken into the dynamics of nitrogen on a coral reef following bleaching induced coral mortality. The results showed that the rates of nitrogen fixation on surfaces made available due to a coral mortality event increased dramatically in the three months following coral mortality, potentially acting as a driving force for the ecosystem to pass through a phase shift to algal dominance. Application of these nitrogen dynamics to entire coral reef ecosystems required a methodology for scaling these sub coral colony processes to entire reefs. This scaling issue is particularly pertinent given the improved understanding of the overwhelming significance of micro-scale processes to community dynamics. The surface index (SI) concept, relating the two-dimensional projected area to the three-dimensional area of corals was refined and developed for variations of gross coral morphologies. This allowed for the scaling of nitrogen flux estimates to be made over entire reef systems, enabling the incorporation of these fluxes into an ecosystem scale model. One of the key factors associated with the potential for a coral reef to recover from a mass coral mortality event is the potential for new corals to successfully recruit. The process of coral recovery could potentially be enhanced if recruitment is viable in the immediate aftermath of a mortality event. Although investigations in this area were inconclusive, extensive herbivore action on turf assemblages up to eight months old indicated that recruitment may be inhibited through the high palatability of turf assemblages in this age bracket. Integrating these processes with the many other published dynamics of coral reefs allowed for the development of the dynamic systems model. By constraining the model structure to known relationships between the modelling parameters, the model can be calibrated to replicate the dynamics of any coral reef ecosystem. This allows the model to be applied to systems where limited data and/or resources are available, making it widely implementable in developing countries such as the small island states scattered around the tropics. The model is ideally suited to the adaptive management framework whereby managers can continually assess the potential future outcomes of management interventions. In addition, due to the spatially inexplicit and generic nature of the model, it can be easily adapted and integrated into large scale regional modelling frameworks or combined with other modelling packages such as socio-economic or fisheries models to provide enhanced management packages. The culmination of the targeted research and integration of existing knowledge has allowed for the development of an ecosystem model for coral reefs that can be easily adopted by coral reef managers throughout the world. It is however, by no means a definitive coral reef ecosystem model and there are many facets that can and should continue to be refined to enhance the reliability of the model.

Hard Habits to Break: Investigating Coastal Resource Utilisations and Management Systems in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Idrus, Rijal January 2009 (has links)
This research investigates the paradox that many coastal communities in developing countries are resource rich but income poor. Another aspect of this paradox is the belief that local communities possess traditional knowledge that respects nature. This belief contrasts the fact that major tropical coastal ecosystems, namely coral reefs and mangroves, are being destroyed at rapid and increasing rates, in many cases by the people whose livelihoods depend on them. These paradoxical circumstances lead to a central question: if the sustainability of coastal resources is vital for the livelihood of local communities, why are these resources being degraded, often to the point of complete destruction? This study explores the motives and consequences of destructive methods of coastal resource utilisation and examines the potential for sustainable livelihoods based on coastal resources currently under threat from destructive use patterns. The analysis is based on a field study conducted in 2006 and 2008 in eleven sites around the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This area is characterised by great biodiversity, including one of the highest marine biodiversities in the Asia-Pacific region. Coral and mangrove ecosystem resource use was found to be driven by different processes and activities; hence the destructive practices impacting both ecosystems were also different. Blast and poison fishing were the most widespread destructive resource use methods found for coral reefs whereas large-scale habitat conversion was responsible for mangrove ecosystem reduction. In the field both resources were found to be under enormous anthropogenic pressures, with published data suggesting that only 5.8% of Indonesian coral reefs are currently in excellent condition and only 38% of mangrove cover remaining in Sulawesi relative to that of 25 years ago. The dynamics of these coastal resources, and of their destruction, are classic examples of the ’tragedy of the commons’. Research findings further indicate that formal institutions tasked with managing these resources have not been able to promote their effective conservation. An array of competing demands and conflicting interests, coupled with inefficient institutional arrangements and under-investment, have rendered inadequate many resource management efforts, including the externally-imposed concepts, allowing destructive patterns of resource utilization to persist. Local communities are disempowered when confronted with (1) the intricate network of destructive-fishing actors targeting coral reefs, or (2) large company-government bureaucracy collusions allowing mangrove conversion. The existence of this collusive network must be considered in any effort to address problems of effective management. Empirical insights suggest that conservation at local level has to face the challenges of market-driven resource extraction at a global scale. Only when a coastal community manages to overcome the dilemma in managing common-pool resource, conservation measures can be implemented and a degree of sustainability attained. Findings from this research have important implications for the discourses on coastal resource policy and research. This research advances the discussions to the area where the core of conflict of interests among stakeholders took place, and yet has rarely been addressed previously. The synthesis from this study provides a strong basis to understand the nature of asymmetric relations amongst the resource stakeholders, and therefore will help in generating effective policies for a fairer coastal resource management regime.

The vocal characteristics found in elderly individuals are characterized by roughness, hoarseness, tremor, reduction in maximum phonation time, which leads to short sentences and the need for air replenishing, reduction in intensity, decreased vocal range, reduction in speech speed, articulatory inaccuracy and resonance alteration. 3 Literature refers to the benefits of vocal training for singers, which is responsible for keeping flexibility, regularity and symmetry of the movements of vocal folds, contributing for the longevity of trained singing voices and a better respiratory efficacy, minimizing the aging effects on voice. 2 Objective: to evaluate the changes to the phonatory and respiratory functions in the elderly over a 2-year period of singing in a choir to ascertain if the alterations observed in the elderly stemming from the vocal aging process can be improved by singing and be maintained over the 2-year follow-up. Patients and methods: The study was of a longitudinal and experimental type. This study population comprised individuals over 60 years old. The sample consisted of 44 elderly individuals of both genders willing to participate in the performances of a choir. Initially, a questionnaire was applied in order to identify potential symptoms and voice problems in the participants, and periodical tests for perceptive-auditory and acoustic analysis of the voice to observe vocal quality in the elderly as well as the measurement of the vital capacity to gauge the respiratory function via spirometry were performed. Results: Means and standard deviations were calculated for the results from the perceptive-auditory and acoustic analysis of the voice, as well as for the values of vital capacity in each one of the evaluation stages. The differences observed in the means in the 4 evaluations of the choir were tested by analysis of variance (ANOVA) adopting a significance level lower than 5% (p<0. 05), paired Student’s t tests were calculated to observe the significance of differences in the evaluation stages. Chi square was calculated to test the distribution of the participants that mentioned a certain symptom (prevalences) or not in the 4 evaluations. Discussion: Based on the changes observed in the voices of aged individuals during the evaluations, it was concluded that the choir program was effective and provided the achievement of improved vocal patterns in relation with the parameters of vocal quality, pulmonary-phonatory-respiratory coordination, respiratory type, articulation, vocal range, pitch and vocal attack. As for the quantitative measures of voice, the mean values obtained in the four evaluations for jitter, shimmer, (HNR), signal to noise ratio (SNR), glottal noise energy (GNE), habitual fundamental frequency (mode f0), fundamental frequency of tremor (f0 tremor), vital capacity (VC) and maximum phonation time (MPT) showed statistically significant differences only for the parameters vital capacity, signal to noise ratio, harmonic to noise ratio and shimmer. Conclusion: We tested the hypothesis that the elderly participating in a choir would improve their vital capacity and vocal performance, which was verified through the results from the perceptive-auditory and acoustic evaluations of voice. There was a decrease in initially detected symptoms and voice problems in the course of the stint with the choir. The vocal and respiratory changes observed at first were maintained over the 2-year follow-up.

Mendes, Josefa Eliane Ribeiro 24 April 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-05-14T12:52:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 865399 bytes, checksum: d9b4ef029377446fec115378d387fb21 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-04-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The search for a quality public education in Brazil has mobilized the spheres of government at the federal, state and municipal levels and fueled many discussions about comprehensive education, leading them to invest in programs to expand the school day. The Programa Mais Educação (More Education Program) emerged from this perspective, with the objective of expanding time, space and educational opportunities. This program serves children and adolescents who study in public schools that have a low index of Basic Education Development (IDEB). The More Education Program offers numerous educational activities, including music, that is present in various workshops. This research investigates the process of teaching music through the More Education Program in two state schools from the state of Paraíba, with the goal of identifying and analyzing the educational practices and musical experiences developed in choral workshops. Using a qualitative approach, we chose a multi-case study conducted in two schools, one in the capital, João Pessoa, and the other in the town of Conde. Data were collected through systematic and consecutive observation of music teaching practices and semi-structured interviews with the agents involved and also the state program coordinator. Along with the field research, we conducted a bibliographic study on materials related to comprehensive education, full-time education, and choir practices, among other relevant themes, as well as official documents from the More Education Program, from the Web site of the Department of Education the State of Paraíba and also the Pedagogical Political Projects of the two schools involved in the research. Based on our observations of music teaching practices developed and also of the interviews conducted, we found that in school A the practice of this workshop had satisfactorily met the minimum requirements of the proposal of the More Education Program, and more than likely, this result may be related to the community involvement of the teacher who coordinated the activities of the program in this school. On the other hand, we found that the teaching of music in the choral singing workshop from school B had been conducted in a shallow manner, leaving the musical language in the background, emphasizing social aspects, but without establishing a relationship with the experience and background of the students. We concluded that, although the study of these two cases does not allow generalizations, the results found in these two distinct schools reflect the decentralization of the implementation of the program and the diversity of practices that enables distinct educational outcomes. We hope that this research can bring new ideas and new studies on the subject, aiming at the possibility of finding new and positive experiences that meet the purposes for music education in this context.

André Daniel Lichtler 31 January 2001 (has links)
This dissertation studies choral singing within the Christian congregation. In terms of methodology, it analyzes the reality of a congregational choir, compares the results obtained from this study with specific bibliography and returns to the reality with suggestions for working with choirs. The first chapter presents the results of the social research carried out within a congregation, organizing the contents into roles and functions of the congregational choir and into relevant elements for choral work in general. The second chapter starts with this content and develops it into three clear perspectives: that of liturgy, another of the edification of the congregation and the other of music. To do this it makes use of other sciences that are considered related: sociology, anthropology, musical therapy and phonoaudiology. The third chapter, using the impulses gathered from the first chapter and studied in the second chapter, presents, albeit in a way at the present time considered utopic, practical conclusions for choral work in Christian congregations. Work with congregational choirs needs to take into account the musical dimension, being it is dealing with a choir, and the congregational dimension because of the tie with the Christian congregation. For this to happen, within the notion of the body that orients the congregation, it counts on the cooperation of all the people who are part of the congregation.

Bündchen, Denise Blanco Sant'Anna January 2005 (has links)

ABSTRACT - In Brazil the use of coral skeleton as paleo-oceanographic index is been underexplored. On this paper, the coral Siderastrea stellata potential as a high resolution paleo-oceanographic proxy of antropic occupation of Baía de Todos os Santos – BTS – (BA – Brazil) was investigated through the Pb isotopic ratios incorporated on coral skeletons collected on inner and outer bay reefs. Reef and estuarine sediment samples of several location in the bay had been analyzed for a better special distribution and Pb source understanding. The results showed that at the first inner bay reef coral records (1993 – 1997) there was an 206Pb depleted, indicating a major influence of the Boquira’s mine (BA) archean ore, which was processed at the Plumbum metallurgical, located in NW BTS, Santo Amaro city and closed in 1993. The sediment samples Pb isotopics ratios showed that, even extinguished, the metallurgical industry still is an important source of Pb to the bay. However, the 206Pb enrichment on the inner bay reef coral samples between 1997 and 2007, with the outer bay reef coral samples isotopic composition behavior synchronicity, and Bahia’s industry development showed that during the last decade, the chemical and petrochemical industries are the most important source of Pb to the BTS coral reef environment.

ABSTRACT - Coral reefs provide important ecosystem services such as the provision of food, habitat maintenance, shoreline protection and opportunities for tourism and recreation. The islands of Tinharé and Boipeba, Bahia, are mostly surrounded by fringing reefs, which have undergone several chronic human impacts. The objective of the present study was to apply an ecosystem approach by analyzing the ecosystem services provided by the coral reefs of the islands of Tinharé and Boipeba in order to support management actions and serve as a tool for coastal management. Data from a seven-year survey program using the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) protocol were used to diagnose the state of conservation of the island’s coral reefs. Ecosystem services were assessed by walking along the shoreline to observe indicators of their occurrence and the main stressful factors for the reefs. The shoreline protection service was analyzed separately by means of the coastal vulnerability model of the InVEST software. The habitat risk assessment model, also from the InVEST suite of models, was used to assess the reefs’ ability to supply services. The AGRRA diagnosis and the habitat risk assessment model indicated a concerning state of conservation, with a greater risk of losing the ability to provide services in Morro de São Paulo. The island of Boipeba presented the greatest occurrence of indicators associated to services supplied by coral reefs, followed by Garapuá beach and, lastly, Morro de São Paulo. The services of greatest occurrence were food provision, habitat maintenance, recreation, and scenic quality. While the main stressful factors were tourism activities, the use of septic tanks and fisheries. The coral reefs presented potential for shoreline protection along 50.51% of the islands. Moreover, 46.79% of the shoreline would present moderate to high vulnerability in case the coral reefs disappeared. The coincidence of areas with high risk and high vulnerability in the scenario of absence of reefs is concerning. Thus, the current model for tourism used in the area should be altered, as should new management strategies be implemented, which can bring benefits and avoid reef decline.
