Partnerships between professionals and amateurs in nature conservation : an examination of motivations and discourses in the management of invasive non-native species

Pagès, Marie January 2017 (has links)
Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS), or Invasive Alien Species, are organisms introduced by humans outside their natural range that have “negative impacts on biodiversity, socio-economy or human health”. Growing awareness of the ecological and socio-economic impacts of INNS has led to a mushrooming of control attempts across the UK. The costs of such environmental management has grown far in excess of the availability of funds to afford control by professionals and led to widespread involvement of volunteers in INNS management and monitoring. This thesis aimed to identify challenges in collaborations between lay people and experts in ecological restoration and to critically examine some of the claims made about the benefits of citizen participation on the sustainability and democratisation of environmental management and on citizen empowerment. Qualitative research methodology was employed to explore in depth motivations, experiences, intentions and views of volunteers and of the organisations that attempt to enrol them in practical conservation work and monitoring activities. We found that caring for nature, the experience of nature and the activities, and social interactions were the three main drivers of volunteering. Importantly, over time, motivations were shaped by the interplay between individual expectations and experiences with the social and ecological context and changed from identifiable personal goals and functions to more complex attachments to the place and the group. Our research also revealed that while some of these key motivations may be recognised by project managers, their description of costeffectiveness, local ownership and empowerment as complementary volunteering goals were often not aligned in practice. Moreover, decision-making may remain largely expert-based, with volunteers not perceiving their knowledge to be valid or a useful contribution to decision-making. Enhancing the sustainability and democratic nature of INNS management requires reflexive practice of citizen engagement that explicitly considers different interests and views but also invites citizens to reflect on their role in the co-production of conservation practice and knowledge.

Ecological networks in alpine regions : a comparative approach of the implementation of a spatial planning principle through nature protection

Kohler, Yann 04 February 2011 (has links)
The concept of “ecological networks” emphasises the importance of ecological connectivity between different natural areas. As a result of the historical evolutions of nature conservation practices and new scientific evidence this concept provides a new approach to nature protection. Numerous initiatives of “ecological networks” exist worldwide and also in the Alps. They are evidence of this new conception of nature protection going beyond the conservation of single species aiming the protection of functioning ecosystems. The implementation of this concept is analysed in three alpine regions in Germany, Switzerland and France. In these regions various different initiatives are overlapping one another generating interrogations concerning the coordination and cooperation between the different scales, actors, actions and related aims. In addition to the pure ecological impacts the creation of ecological networks seems to offer a particular potential going beyond the general objectives related to nature protection. These additional casual effects are in the centre of this research: the potential of the tool to mobilise various categories of different actors, the particular possibilities of regional governance, the prospective and existing links with spatial planning. The concept of ecological networks has completely changed nature protection practice inducing modifications of the perception of nature by society and therefore of the relation between society and nature.

A natureza como sujeito de direitos ? : As transformações do conceito de natureza e seu contexto de alienação no sudoeste do Pará, Brasil / Droits de la nature ? : Changes in the notion of Nature and its Alienation Process in the Southwest of Pará, Brazil

De Almeida Corrêa, Simy 28 April 2017 (has links)
The main effort of the rescue work was the transformation of the concept of nature in Western philosophy and relate the history of law, analytic categories such as power and domination of drawing a particular way the crisis process environmental as discussed today. The aim was to discuss the role of law as a science and as an instrument of power that historically only led party on a dominant status and a mastery of the crisis experienced and propagated today. In this sense, it is inevitable question of the Amazon, in particular the state of Pará with record of deforestation and conflict. The reflection of all the transformations are experienced daily in the region where the nature diametrically opposed visions of the life of a conflict and therefore within the force field agents to show their power and dictate the future of this location. A brief analysis of how lawyers are manifested in processes related to large projects in the western region of Para to illustrate the vision and the nature of the concepts learned by these important agents. But what could be really different in this whole journey that repeats throughout the world? At the end, we present the latest discussions on the social empowerment of officers who resist the secular domination. Nature as a subject of rights is not only a thought or a biocentric theoretical aspect, is a decolonization movement of thought and theoretical constructs Europeanized / Western and a building accountability agents that give identity to place, the Amazon.

Reflective embodiment of the four elements of nature as a metaphor for personal expression

van Zyl, Kirsti January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (BTech (Surface Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010 / A personal. phenomenological expression and discovery has been conducted. through being immersed in the four elements of nature. namely water, air, earth and fire. Each series represents one of the four elements. The established, Westem interpretations of the four elements have been contrasted with my personal embodied interpretation. The result of this was a concept based on the discovery of my context within the environment, manifested into an artistic reflection of my appreciation of creation. Embodiment. therefore. provides the theoretical framework as it is the merging of the body and mind in our interactions with the outer world, as a way of gaining knowledge and experience (Hocking. Haskell & Unds (eds.). 2001: xviii). Phenomenology of perception, according to Langer (1989: 158). is the study of structures of perception. and as a supporting theory, it ties in with embodiment and how our thoughts and feelings are a result of our physical body's conversation and interaction with the outer world. Embodiment is a tool used to rediscover that dialogue. and is one I have applied in order to design and create subjective and conceptual fabric sculptures. I have embodied my sculptures. shaping and installing a meaning, dictated by my experiential body perception. These two theories were important for my research in order to engage with and interpret my body's experiences within the elements of nature Inspiration for my product was derived from Deepa Panchamia. for her structured yet organic. pleated structures and Annalisa Vobis for her use of organic inspiration and the resulting conceptual interpretations. Andy Goldsworthy was also inspiration to me for the emphasis he puts on the raw and natural aspects of experience and process. This is evident in the nonpermanent characteristic of his land art. An important factor of this range is the display and exhibition of the Sculptures. by recording each series within the context of each element it represents, it grounds and highlights the strong inspiration of nature and process. evident within each sculpture. The entire range is created from polyester organza that has been permanently pleated and then hand manipulated to create 3-Dimensional. abstract sculptures. The use of this fabric creates a transparent, ethereal atmosphere. where the inner and outer layers of the sculptures seem to merge and interact. reflecting and indicating a fleeting moment of ghostlike embodied expression. Apart from the sculptures being the result of a self-expressive. introspective process, they are also aesthetically based conceptual art pieces with great potential to being translated into a variety of applications.

Conceito de natureza em Marx: intercÃmbio entre homem e natureza: produÃÃo e reproduÃÃo da vida material e social / Concept of nature in Marx: the exchange between man and nature: the production and reproduction of material life and social

Albertino Servulo Barbosa de Sousa 24 April 2013 (has links)

Abstract: This dissertation seeks to understand the dynamics of production of urban space in the districts of Sousas and Joaquim Egidio - Campinas / SP, through the use of ideology in environmental planning and reorganization of the territory. Those districts are located in an Area of Environmental Protection (APA), our area of study has very important environmental, housing many green areas. Moreover, they can be found near the town of Campinas, but characterized it as a different portion of the municipality, since they have bucolic landscapes. Accordingly, in the last 20 years, the districts have become the target of a property speculation that only tends to grow. Owing to their "natural", new ventures aimed at middle and upper classes appear at any moment. The incorporation of environmentalist ideology that the market makes it influences the society through the so-called green marketing, which sells enterprise emphasizing the benefits of getting closer to nature in order to obtain higher quality of life. Such enterprises are characterized as new ways of living and more leisure by means of horizontal condominiums and lots closed and tourism: food, rural and ecotourism. Thus, the areas' natural 'are due to the urbanized reenchantment that some people are by nature mythicize, which motivate to leave the town and day to day stress and seek tranquility close to green areas. So we have the ownership of the green areas as a commodity and therefore accessible only to those who can pay. Since the home districts for new forms of living with restricted access, segregation socio consolidates it. In tourism, the segregation is also present, as the establishments (bars, restaurants) have to target more affluent classes. Accordingly, new territorialities are formed on site, with restricted use, exclusive. Such forms of ownership strengthens the social apartheid, being responsible for the segregation of those who are excluded from this process. Therefore, this research aims to discuss how it gives ownership of the area in Sousas and Joaquim Egidio, still investigating the contradictions that these processes exert on the dynamics of urban space in question. / Mestrado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Mestre em Geografia

Literatura naturalista, moralidade e natureza / Naturalist literature, morality and nature

The moral criterion for evaluating the literature, unchallenged while the mid-nineteenth century in Brazil, was also present in the literature naturalist. This finding, nothing obvious if one considers the criticism on naturalism produced throughout the twentieth century, is supported by both the critical reception of contemporary naturalistic novels, as the theoretical elaboration of the writer Émile Zola. By dwelling on the theme of morality as a criterion of evaluation literature from the late nineteenth, this thesis also seeks to explain the relationship that literature and naturalism kept with the idea of nature, very present in discussions involving the task of representing reality that would be proper to naturalism. He also proposes a reading of the novels Bom-Crioulo, A carne e Livro de uma sogra, taking into account the theoretical discussions addressed in the thesis / Doutorado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

The view from the paradoxical world

Uribe, R. B. January 1983 (has links)
The consequences of using such complex tools as Logic and Mathematics, which are so ingrained in our own nature as thinking living organisms, to explain precisely that Nature in which we ourselves are imbedded, are disucssed from a new perspective. The interplay between the individual (subjective) world and the social (objective) world emerges with clarity under this light. Paradoxes, a nightmare for Logicians and Mathematicians, are returned to their cradle, the observer, where no hunt is set up to “solve" them. Though I am not alone in this endeavour to consider paradoxes from a different perspective, new insights into the nature of the living organization and the working of the nervous system allow today the opportunity to strengthen this revolutionary viewpoint. Several experiments performed on a multicomputer realization of organizationally closed (paradoxical) unities, suggest a nervous system where processes and descriptions are more fundamental concepts than time and space. While the consequences of this new approach remain still to be explored, a sensitive reader will already enjoy them.
