Cuban Jam Sessions In Miniature: A Novel In Tracks

Rincon, Diego 01 January 2009 (has links)
This is the collection of a novel, Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature: A Novel in Tracks, and an embedded short story, "Shred Me Like the Cheese You Use to Make Buñuelos." The novel tells the story of Palomino Mondragón, a Colombian mercenary who has arrived in New York after losing his leg to a mortar in Korea. Reclusive, obsessive and passionate, Palomino has reinvented himself as a mambo musician and has fallen in love with Etiwanda, a dancer at the nightclub in which he plays—but he cannot bring himself to declare his love to her. His life changes when he is deported from the United States at the height of the Cuban Missile crisis without having declared his love. Through the thirty years chronicled in the novel, Palomino does all possible in his quest to return to the United States to find Etiwanda despite the fact that he knows she has grown to be a fantasy, an obsession of his imagination. Palomino’s quest takes him to the United States and back three times, as he becomes more and more desperate, as he becomes involved with drug traffickers and for-hire murderers like Polo Norte, as he loses track of what it means to feel alive. Palomino is trapped in a tug-of-war between his rational desire for a normal existence and his irrational but inescapable longing for Etiwanda. In the end, his desperation to get to Etiwanda brings the underworld of Polo Norte to her doorstep. "Shred Me Like the Cheese You Use to Make Buñuelos" tells the story of Polo Norte, Palomino’s antagonist, on his last day on earth, as he is followed by a writer who has agreed to watch him commit suicide. Together, the stories explore the history and nature of the Colombian Diaspora in the United States, and the violent circumstances surrounding the relationship between both countries and the migrants stuck in the middle of it.

Flores Arevalo, Yoami 05 February 2024 (has links)
The present study shares the results of a movement laboratory aimed at six students between the ages of 20 and 25 from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), where the main objective was to experiment with the tools of improvisation, error and playfulness as Methodological aspects for teaching salsa. It is important to point out that the improvisation was taken from the perspective of contemporary dance where part of the proposal was to generate a personal and collective space as a strategy to facilitate the understanding of the execution of salsa on the one hand, and on the other, to generate contributions such as developing movement experiences that contain history and individual subjectivities. For this, continue with the search and discovery of new possibilities of movement.

A Situational Assessment of Student Leadership: An Evaluation of Alternate Forms Reliability and Convergent Validity

Slack, Patricia 01 May 2010 (has links)
The Situational Assessment of Leadership: Student Assessment (SALSA©) was developed in the spring of 2009 to be used as a measure of student leadership. Study 1 assessed alternate forms reliability of the SALSA using scores from 178 students. The overall scores on SALSA Form A and SALSA Form B showed a significant correlation (rAB = .906, p < .01). Dimension scores on the two forms ranged from rAB = .475 to rAB = .804. Study 2 evaluated the convergent validity between the SALSA and the Western Kentucky University Center for Leadership Excellence assessment center. SALSA scores as well as assessment scores from 53 students were analyzed. The overall scores on the SALSA and CLE assessment center had a significant yet moderate correlation (r = .513). Dimension correlations were significant but low, ranging from r = .310 to r = .392. The strong correlations in Study 1 indicate the two forms of the SALSA may be used as alternate measures such as in a pre and post-test of leadership. The convergent validities in Study 2 demonstrate that both the SALSA and assessment center may be used to assess leadership. However, the low convergent validities across dimensions indicate overall scores likely should be used rather than dimension scores.

It depends, among others, on the starch botanic source, on the enzymatic system used and on the size of the granules. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of granule size on enzymatic susceptibility and on structural and physicochemical properties of Peruvian Carrot starch. Starches from two varieties (Amarela de Carandaí, AC and Amarela de Senador Amaral, ASA) were isoladed, fractionated by size and classified into whole granules (without separation); large granules (d 20æm); medium granules (> 10 e < 20æm) and small granules (£ 10æm). The whole and fractionated granular starches were hydrolysed with bacterial -amylase and fungal amyloglucosidase. Samples, before and after hydrolysis, were analyzed regarding their structural and physicochemical characteristics. The whole and fractionated native starches shown in optical microscope and scanning electron microscope circular shape for large granules and polygonal shape for small granules. The granular surface was smooth with some had openings, especially for the larges granules, with some depressions and holes. From chromatograms of gel permeation in Sepharose CL-2B was not possible to observe differences on the molecular size from both varieties of Peruvian Carrot. The amylose content, that was higher to AC variety, was concentraded mainly in large granules. Both varieties exhibited B-type X-ray diffraction pattern and relative degree of cristallinity (DC) (~20%) was not different for the different starches, despite the intensity of the peaks decrease for small granules. The intrinsic viscosity of starches from both varieties was smallest 24% and 14%, respectively, to small granules in relation of large granules. Gelatinization temperatures, from DSC, decreased as the granule sizes decreased, while the enthalpy remained the same. The smaller the granule

Guardeño Expósito, Luis Miguel 18 May 2012 (has links)

Flores Arevalo, Yoami 21 November 2023 (has links)
The present study seeks to address the practice of lady style in salsa and its influence on the empowerment of women. The question that will guide this research work is: how does the practice of lady style in salsa influence the empowerment of Latin American women of the new millennium? In response to this question, it is proposed that the practice of lady style in salsa influences the empowerment of Latin American women of the new millennium because it contributes to a process of self-knowledge, construction and strengthening of identity and with it the construction of a new hegemonic discourse. At the beginning, it will be explained what the female style salsa practice consists of and thus it will be related to the concept of empowerment inside and outside of dance. Then, it will be analyzed how the dancer within her practice can be carrying out a work of self-knowledge and from there arrive at a construction and strengthening of her identity as a result of working with her body during her learning. After this process, the dancer will establish a new female discourse that, by providing a perspective of power and freedom for women, will oppose the hegemonic discourse.

Adubação verde e mineral na produção de salsa e nas propriedades físicas e químicas do solo / Green manure and mineral fertilization on parsley yield and on chemical and physical soil properties.

Kassoma, Josina Nimi 04 December 2009 (has links)
Two experiments were conducted with the objective to evaluate green manure and mineral fertilization efficience on parsley yield and physical and chemistry of a Nitossol Vermelho eutrófico típico soil in Piracicaba, SP region.
