Psychological Mirroring in Tana French's In the Woods and The Likeness

Gott-Helton, Sarah Meghan 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Tana French’s work has been the subject of a number of recent scholars. Scholarship on French ranges from theories of liminality, to meditations on how French’s work explores the “Celtic Tiger” phenomenon in Ireland, to looking at her stories as new takes on old fairy tales. French’s work straddles the line between popular detective fiction and literary fiction, upending popular tropes and creating something wholly new. One issue that has not been explored is how French’s work fits into a Lacanian framework. The six novels in her Dublin Murder Squad detective stories are rife with issues of psychological mirroring, or doubling. As such, they take the typical mystery trope of pairing a detective with a case that alters and reflects back their own psychological traumas, and takes them to a new level. This work will address issues of French’s characters and how they fit into the theories of Lacan’s Mirror Stage, as well as the “Real,” “Symbolic,” and “Imaginary” realms that we human beings unconsciously construct for ourselves. This writing examines the first two novels of the series, In the Woods, and The Likeness, and analyzes them in light of these theories, showing how mirroring exists in nearly every aspect of each text.

A Lacanian Ideology Critique of Gender in Mathematics Education

Moore, Alexander Stone 14 September 2023 (has links)
In this study I employ Lacanian psychoanalysis and ideological criticism to analyze the development of "gender and mathematics" research over the past fifty years. This study is motivated by the original Marxist-Lacanian claim by Valerie Walkerdine in the 1980s that women's relationship with mathematics must always be considered as fundamentally problematic, and by the complex and often contradictory claims that are made in research artifacts that report on this topic. Many approaches to this topic that focus on "closing the gender gap" or aiming for "gender equity" warrant an ideological critique to situate these motivations within the political realm of mathematics education research. Artifacts analyzed in this study were gleaned from a comprehensive electronic library search of over 600 entries, where 178 were retained as yield. A complete ideological critique was performed on a subset of these. Findings include (1) historical alignment of the ideologies evidenced in the research with the ideological influences of the political situation at the time of publication, including scientism, neoliberalism, evolutionism, and solutionism, (2) the ideology of interpellationism which indicates the role of scientific ways of knowing in capitalist political economy, and (3) theoretical foundations of what I call the feminine-quilted-speech indicate how at the present moment in the field, we have the opportunity to shift the ideological underpinnings of research on gender and mathematics. The study avows the role of gender as an agent of capitalist accumulation in school mathematics, through a notion I develop called the masculine-quilted-speech. / Doctor of Philosophy / "Gender and mathematics" is a concern for mathematics education researchers that is old as the field itself, yet it is one that continues to be an active focus for a large swath of researchers. Conundrums abound. Such research includes, for example, neurotic obsessions and phantasies about closing achievement gaps between males and females, whilst other approaches consider the social factors impacting women's and men's relationship to mathematics. I wager that one reason for this plurality of approaches (and the incommensurability of their constituent findings and results) is the inability of existing theoretical perspectives for getting to the root of the problem (the point-de-capiton of the discourse). This dissertation offers a political psychoanalytic counter-perspective to prevailing theoretical approaches on the issue of "gender and mathematics" that critiques the ideologies advanced by researchers in the field through their actions of performing and publishing research on this topic. Findings indicate the extent to which ideology structures the actions of researchers, and the role of gender in the capitalist mode of school mathematics.

Lacanian Psychoanalytic Theory and the Historical Progression of Discourse: The Shifting of Social and Institutional Identity in Post-World War II America

Simpson, David 27 October 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to present an alternative way of analyzing the behavior of our leading social and governmental institutions through the employment of Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, specifically Lacan's theory of discourse. Lacan used the term discourse to show that a society's primary social link is founded on language, reflected back through society in the form of discursive practices. According to Lacanian discourse theory, a subject's movement into language and the social bond that is created between people as a result of this movement are at the center of our current cultural condition. More mainstream approaches to organizational behavior have traditionally focused on observed human action to explain human behavior and the correlation of this behavior with possible remedial actions. Lacanian discourse theory, with its foundation in psychoanalytic theory, enables the formulation of a model of institutional behavior that goes beyond more mainstream approaches by focusing on behavior at the unconscious level. The central premise of this dissertation is that there has been a cultural shift in the United States from the dominant form of discourse of the modern era to a new form of discourse. This new discourse has led to serious disconnections between our current social bond and true human desire. By employing Lacanian discourse theory, changes in the deeper, structural level of how a society relates to and communicates with each other will be revealed, thus providing greater insight into the current social condition of the United States and how this condition affects the behavior of its leading public institutions. / Ph.

Diebold, Lionel 14 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis is orientated by the suffering felt by the subjects with a psychosomatic phenomenon (PSP). My clinical practice at the surgery unit of the public hospital is basis toward PSP on a somatic disease. This enigmatic character of the phenomena evokes well the abutting of medical and psychological discourses. Usually, these discourses bump into PSP, and these patients are rapidly qualified, like psychosomatic. This diagnosis avoids the caring, and patients are disqualified (deficit of mentation or maladapted emotion), without care’ solution. More this reality is a problem for Public Health. Some theories considered psychosis unable to have some somatic troubles. But how explain they died ?To discuss theses theoretical and descriptive positions, this thesis has decided to turn back to the practice, with some patients suffering from PSP. Usually about PSP, the interpretations are focusing on the signifier and the object “a”, which is an object of Pulsion. Something is writing unconsciously, in the repetition in number.Problematic leads us to posit an hypothesis: “With a subject of psychopathologic structure, psychosis or neurosis, the clinical practice of PSP at the hospital, is a clinical practice of “trait unaire” which can moved in clinical practice of letter”.Methodology adopted is praxeology, an articulation between practice and theory. Studies of cases illustrate this way. The paradigm is psychoanalysis.Hypothesis is corroborated by the clinical practice. An other interpretation is efficiente with PSP, “trait unaire”. The repetition in number stop and PSP disappears. This psychotherapeuty preserv the subjective answer of PSP, limit to the Jouissance and authorize an other subjective position, with the different psychopathologic structures.

Assistência social e as contribuições da psicanálise: um processo de supervisão institucional / Social Assistance and the contributions of Psychoanalysis: a process of institutional supervision

Merli, Laura Fernandes 14 March 2017 (has links)
The present thesis aims to investigate the possible contributions of Psychoanalysis to Social Assistance, based on a supervision process offered to the technical staff of a Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance - CREAS. We took advantage of this work experience and of the questions that were raised during its realization, towards the debate of the public policies of Social Assistance and the practices that it undertook. Given the breadth of this problem, we seek, through a historical recovery of socio-assistance practices from the primitive societies to the present day focusing on the Brazilian reality, to interrogate the signifiers that have been incorporated into the constitutional texts and the practices of Social Assistance, with a view to Question and question what values and ideals this policy is in service and how and what operates in the execution of their actions. In addition, starting from an effort to formalize our work experience as supervisor of a social assistive network equipment, we try to delimit the contributions of Psychoanalysis to the area from this space that is inserted in the articulation between practice and theory. The point is that psychoanalysis, based on its subversive character and the Freudian discovery of the supremacy of the unconscious, may waver conclusive knowledge in the field of Social Assistance, sensitizing technicians to the encounter with unconscious knowledge and, in this way, by broadening the possibilities of reflection on the socio-assistance practices, can propitiate the construction of alternatives to the impasses that present themselves in the social assistance services, subverting complaints in work demand

Os autismos na atualidade: contribuições a partir da psicanálise e da genética / The autisms nowadays: contributions from psychoanalysis and genetics

Carvalho, Fernanda Cristina Gomes de 13 June 2019 (has links)
The early 21st century has brought important breakthrough when it comes to autism. Its conception expanded significantly and the idea of psychical causality was questioned, opening precedents to theories which favor the biological aspect. Genetics is at its peak and represents the greatest scientific interest. Psychoanalysis, as an alternative, has been rejected at the expense of propositions that use learning techniques. Along these lines, this research focused on investigating the contributions from Lacanian psychoanalysis and genetics regarding autism at this moment in time, in order to support the viewpoint that psychoanalysis has something to contribute in the treatment of these cases. The argumentation about the dispute between the dominance of knowledge in relation to autism and how the political bias can justify such actions becomes important. We start depicting the contemporary autisms, in an attempt to cover its range field: the market, classification manuals, current debates, autistic jouissance and its historical background. Subsequently, the Lacanian psychoanalysis contributions were elaborated, in order to differentiate between autism and psychosis, deriving out of the introduction of the subject in the language field. Lastly, we discuss about the recent genetic research, intending to propose a possible exchange between the aforementioned fields. The genesis of the investigation that guides this essay is the psychoanalysis research model, that endorses an in-depth understanding of the phenomena. In the matter of data collection, bibliographical and field research have been practiced. The field research followed the interview standards in psychoanalysis. Two interviews with a geneticist involved with the Human Genome Project in the area of autism were carried out, in order to complement the theoretical scope of this study, as well as to identify a possible concurrence between psychoanalysis and genetics. Its been deduced that there is, in fact, a possible encounter, which is, precisely, the return to the particular, the attention to the singularity. Lacans theoretical contribution on object a, bears important landmarks of how to conduct such cases within the practice. This examination acknowledges the psychoanalyst\'s commitment to take a stance in the face of contemporary debates, in an attempt to disparage some of the main criticisms towards psychoanalysis, that ultimately seek to deviate it from the options of possible treatments for autism

[en] SPEECH ACTS, PARAPRAXIS: AN APPROXIMATION BETWEEN THE LINGUISTIC THEORIES OF AUSTIN AND WITTGENSTEIN AND THE PSYCHOANALYSIS OF FREUD AND LACAN / [pt] ATOS DE FALA, ATOS FALHOS: UMA APROXIMAÇÃO ENTRE AS TEORIAS LINGUÍSTICAS DE AUSTIN E DE WITTGENSTEIN E A PSICANÁLISE DE FREUD E LACAN

CLAUDIO EDUARDO MOURA DE OLIVEIRA 31 October 2012 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this thesis is to search for ways in which Freud’s and Lacan’s psychoanalytical theory can contribute to Austin’s and Wittgenstein’s philosophies of language. We propose that the subject of Austin’s speech acts be framed within Freud’s theory of parapraxis as acts of the unconscious, so that the Freudian concept of drive can be related to speech as an act of a subject. The speech act is, then, thought as being subordinate to the vicissitudes of what Lacan called the Great Other, since the act occurs in what Lacan named the symbolic order. As to Wittgenstein’s theory, the focus of this work is on its relations to Lacan’s claim that the unconscious is structured like a language. The psychoanalytical concept of the unconscious is here used to consider the relations between language and subjectivity and the way how the subject accesses the world through language; in other words, the focus is on the relations between the subject of the unconscious and the subject of language.

Entre a indeterminação e a causalidade psíquica: a noção de responsabilidade em Jacques Lacan / Between indeterminism and psychic causality: the notion of responsibility in Jacques Lacan

Lopes, Suzana Soares 28 June 2019 (has links)
Por fim, delineamos a responsabilidade como noção possível e hipotetizamos que esta traz a marca da posição ética e insondável do sujeito, no que este não pode ser reduzido a um sonho do mundo tragado pela estrutura / Starting from the criticism of the imaginary and doctrinal use of responsibility that eventually affects the psychoanalytic field, this master\'s research aims to investigate the notion of responsibility of the subject in the consideration of the work of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, situating the possible incidences and clinical implications of this notion. As a result of the markings, definitions and distinct times in which Lacan addressed responsibility in his writings and seminars, as axis of work we insert the notion of responsibility in the debate between the indeterminism-determinism and the psychic causality, in order to unfold points of indeterminacy and negativity that raise conditions of possibility to the responsibility of the subject. Subsequently, we approach the modes of logical assumption of responsibility in retroactive recognition and in act , a perspective that gains form (sollen) and effectiveness in the Lacanian understanding of logical time. Finally, we delineate responsibility as a possible notion and hypothesize that it bears the mark of the ethical and unfathomable position of the subject, in that it can not be reduced to a \"dream of the world\" engulfed by structure
