Influence of landscape context on patterns of occupancy, abundance, and gene flow among collared lizards in the Flint Hills of Kansas

With / Organisms exist within complex landscapes, and landscape features may influence multiple aspects of a species’ distribution within the landscape, including patch occupancy, abundance within patches, and population genetic diversity at a local or regional scale. We took two approaches to identify the relative importance of landscape context for populations of the Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus collaris collaris) in the northern Flint Hills of Kansas. First, we conducted surveys at limestone outcrops in experimental watersheds managed under different burning and grazing practices. Habitat occupancy and lizard abundance were estimated by constructing models that incorporated aspects of the environment at multiple scales. Both abundance and occupancy were higher on rock ledges that had more crevices, greater complexity in vegetation, covered a larger area, and were more prominent than available habitat. Abundance and occupancy were also higher in watersheds that were burned frequently (1–2 year intervals), but grazing only had a significant effect in less frequently burned (four–year burn interval) watersheds. Our second approach was to measure genetic diversity and population genetic differentiation and relate these measures to differences in landscape context. We sampled collared lizard DNA at four locations (sample sites < 45 km apart) and analyzed trends in 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci. We found evidence for low genetic variability and moderate population differentiation among our sample sites relative to estimates reported in the literature at the core of the species’ range. Differences in migration rates and ancestry among sampling locations also appear to correspond to differences in landscape resistance based on land cover and rock availability. Thus, it appears that habitat management may influence the suitability of habitat patches at the local scale, and that differences in land cover and rock availability may influence the connectivity of populations at the landscape scale.

O papel de sistemas agroflorestais para a conectividade em paisagem fragmentada do nordeste do Rio Grande do Sul

Esse estudo teve como objetivo comparar duas formas de manejo de cultivos de banana em relação ao seu potencial de abrigar espécies florestais. Nós assumimos que o registro de espécies florestais utilizando um elemento da matriz mostra que a espécie não evita a matriz totalmente e pode ser capaz de cruzá-la, indicando a importância dessas estruturas para a manutenção de conectividade funcional entre as áreas de hábitat. Foram amostrados 30 cultivos incluindo áreas sob manejo convencional e agroflorestal. Em cada unidade amostral foram realizadas transecções para acessar a proporção de aves florestais, generalistas e de áreas abertas. Variáveis descritoras da estrutura interna e da estrutura da paisagem do entorno dos cultivos foram consideradas para verificar se a avifauna responde à características intrínsecas dos cultivos ou ao contexto de paisagem em que os cultivos estão inseridos. A proporção de espécies florestais foi maior em cultivos agroflorestais (F28;0,001=19,29; p<0,0004), enquanto a proporção de generalistas não apresentou diferença significativa (F28;0,001=0,22; p<0,22) e a de espécies de áreas abertas foi maior em cultivos convencionais (F28;0,001=8,92; p<0,006). Os dois conjuntos de variáveis considerados, isto é, a estrutura interna do cultivo e do entorno deste foram importantes para predizer a proporção de espécies florestais. Embora tenhamos observado o efeito da paisagem na proporção de espécies florestais, salientamos aqui que sistemas convencionais, mesmo em contextos de paisagem similares à sistemas agroflorestais, não apresentaram a mesma proporção de espécies florestais. Esse resultado indica um diferencial de cultivos agroflorestais de banana para a ocorrência de espécies florestais. Em nível de paisagem, a proporção de florestas e consequentemente a diminuição do isolamento entre manchas é o responsável pela presença potencial de espécies em fragmentos. Only one of the hillforts of southern Gwynedd has been submitted to a small excavation, and the forts in this study are quite forgotten in the larger British hillfort research. This thesis explores the forts’ possible uses through an analysis of their landscape setting, accessibility and view, architecture, internal features and archaeological setting. The result of the analysis show a variety of uses , for example related to occupation, trade, exchange or communication, agriculture and pastoralism, defence, religion and ritual. In addition, some larger patterns, connections and pairings of forts also come to light. Hopefully this study will lead to a heightened interest in, and future studies and excavations of the forts of southern Gwynedd.

Does Landscape Context Affect Habitat Value? The Importance of Seascape Ecology in Back-reef Systems

Seascape ecology provides a useful framework from which to understand the processes governing spatial variability in ecological patterns. Seascape context, or the composition and pattern of habitat surrounding a focal patch, has the potential to impact resource availability, predator-prey interactions, and connectivity with other habitats. For my dissertation research, I combined a variety of approaches to examine how habitat quality for fishes is influenced by a diverse range of seascape factors in sub-tropical, back-reef ecosystems. In the first part of my dissertation, I examined how seascape context can affect reef fish communities on an experimental array of artificial reefs created in various seascape contexts in Abaco, Bahamas. I found that the amount of seagrass at large spatial scales was an important predictor of community assembly on these reefs. Additionally, seascape context had differing effects on various aspects of habitat quality for the most common reef species, White grunt Haemulon plumierii. The amount of seagrass at large spatial scales had positive effects on fish abundance and secondary production, but not on metrics of condition and growth. The second part of my dissertation focused on how foraging conditions for fish varied across a linear seascape gradient in the Loxahatchee River estuary in Florida, USA. Gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus, traded food quality for quantity along this estuarine gradient, maintaining similar growth rates and condition among sites. Additional work focused on identifying major energy flow pathways to two consumers in oyster-reef food webs in the Loxahatchee. Algal and microphytobenthos resource pools supported most of the production to these consumers, and body size for one of the consumers mediated food web linkages with surrounding mangrove habitats. All of these studies examined a different facet of the importance of seascape context in governing ecological processes occurring in focal habitats and underscore the role of connectivity among habitats in back-reef systems. The results suggest that management approaches consider the surrounding seascape when prioritizing areas for conservation or attempting to understand the impacts of seascape change on focal habitat patches. For this reason, spatially-based management approaches are recommended to most effectively manage back-reef systems.

Climate change is advancing spring onset across the U.S. national park system

Many U.S. national parks are already at the extreme warm end of their historical temperature distributions. With rapidly warming conditions, park resource management will be enhanced by information on seasonality of climate that supports adjustments in the timing of activities such as treating invasive species, operating visitor facilities, and scheduling climate-related events (e.g., flower festivals and fall leaf-viewing). Seasonal changes in vegetation, such as pollen, seed, and fruit production, are important drivers of ecological processes in parks, and phenology has thus been identified as a key indicator for park monitoring. Phenology is also one of the most proximate biological responses to climate change. Here, we use estimates of start of spring based on climatically modeled dates of first leaf and first bloom derived from indicator plant species to evaluate the recent timing of spring onset (past 10-30 yr) in each U.S. natural resource park relative to its historical range of variability across the past 112 yr (1901-2012). Of the 276 high latitude to subtropical parks examined, spring is advancing in approximately three-quarters of parks (76%), and 53% of parks are experiencing "extreme" early springs that exceed 95% of historical conditions. Our results demonstrate how changes in climate seasonality are important for understanding ecological responses to climate change, and further how spatial variability in effects of climate change necessitates different approaches to management. We discuss how our results inform climate change adaptation challenges and opportunities facing parks, with implications for other protected areas, by exploring consequences for resource management and planning.

These relationships are seen as complex networks of interaction, which present recurrent structural patterns and are severely threatened by anthropogenic factors. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the isolation caused by urbanization on the interaction networks between plants and floral visitors. Twelve South Brazilian fragments were sampled in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Sampling was performed during spring and summer of 2016/17 in 1-hectare circular plots using the focal method (10 minutes observation / plant). We estimated the degree of isolation of the fragments by calculating the area covered by urban matrix in a buffer of 2000 meters around each plot. We performed a qualitative-quantitative sampling of vegetation as part of the explanatory data observed for the network patterns. To construct interaction matrices, we divide visitors into potential pollinators and non-pollinators. We construct quantitative interaction matrices for each fragment/plot by calculating the metrics available in the networklevel function of the bipartite package of the R program. We estimate the correlation between the logarithm of the urbanized area in a radius of 2000 meters and each network metric calculated with the generalized linear model. We sampled 1240 plants (182 species). The total abundance of floral visitors was 1840 specimens (94% potential pollinators). The richness of plant species was greater in areas more isolated by urbanization, which is due to the fact that these areas catch fire more frequently. The richness of visitors was also higher in these areas, which is due to a "bottom up" effect given by the increase in plant richness. The results suggest that networks increase connectance and nestedness (in more urbanized areas) as a way of protection against the disturbance, increasing system stability. In addition, areas further away from urbanization allow a greater level of network specialization, since they have a greater range of niches. We conclude that these findings highlight the importance of investing in the conservation and maintenance of natural areas within large cities, although they may seem isolated in the midst of a dense urban matrix.
