The COVID-19 Pandemic and its Effects on Swedish Mortality

Voghera, Siri, Tepe, Özlem January 2021 (has links)
This thesis analyses the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on Swedish mortality during 2020 by investigating whether it has resulted in excess mortality. This is done using a stochastic mortality projection model from the Lee-Carter framework and by assuming the number of deaths follows a Poisson distribution. Due to the few confirmed COVID-19 deaths at younger ages, the decision is made to only include 50-to-100-year-olds in the analysis. Models in the Lee-Carter framework are fitted on historical data from 1993–2019 collected from Human Mortality Database and Statistiska Centralbyrån. After evaluating the models, inter alia using residual analysis and backtesting, we ascertain that the classical Lee-Carter model accomplishes a wanted level of fit and forecast accuracy. During the morality projection with the Lee-Carter model, three different sources of uncertainty are accounted for by constructing prediction intervals using bootstrap. The results show that the large age group 67–94-year-olds have suffered from statistically significant excess mortality during 2020. The level of excess mortality differs between ages, with the ages 70–90-year-olds having the highest number of excess deaths. Comparing the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths to our forecasted number of excess deaths indicates the COVID-19 virus likely caused the surge in deaths.

Främja boendeintegration i översiktlig planering : En socioekonomisk fallstudie i Linköpings kommun och Malmö stad / Encourage housing integration in general planning : A socioeconomic case study in Linköping municipality and Malmö city

Hassan, Naima, Snäll, Jacqueline January 2021 (has links)
Larger municipalities face bigger challenges with housing-segregation. Therefore, it’s necessary to implement housing-integration to counteract socio-economic polarization. This study therefore aims to analyze whether and how Linköping Municipality and Malmö City work to promote housing-integration in general planning together with a researcher's description on municipal’s work with housing-integration. This by answering: What problems do the municipalities describe with housing-segregation? Is it possible to highlight strengths and weaknesses in the municipalities' work with housing-integration? How do goals and workmethods differ between the municipalities? The theoretical frame of the study consists of Carol Lee Bacchi's critical policy analysis and theoretical concepts. This study’s empirical material and analysis methods include a qualitative content analysis of the municipalities' governing documents and an interview. The conclusions are that Malmö City has established a solid integrationwork that mimics housing-integration. Unlike Linköping municipality, which must change their approach to housing-segregation, to help the further work with housing-integration.

BLACK MAMAS ON THE SCREEN: AFRICAN MATRIARCHY AND AFRICAN AMERICAN MOTHERHOOD IN SPIKE LEE JOINTS

Taylor, Michelle Benée 05 1900 (has links)
Though the portrayal of African American mothers in cinema has been diverse, it has too often misrepresented the lived experiences of mothers and has contributed to negative stereotypes about African American motherhood. Existing analyses have not provided an Afrocentric examination of these specific depictions and their broader societal impact. This dissertation aims to address this gap by investigating the representation of African American mothers in film. Grounded in Afrocentric research, scholarship, and theories, the project seeks to develop a framework centered on African Matriarchy and the experiences of African American mothers. This paper introduces the Taylor Test, a comprehensive rubric informed by the Afrocentric paradigm, film theories, and feminist and womanist theories. Through the application of the Taylor Test, a content analysis was conducted on select films by renowned African American filmmaker Spike Lee, including Crooklyn (1994), She Hate Me (2004), and Chi-Raq (2015). The findings of this research contribute to the development of an Afrocentric film analysis framework, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Taylor Test. Additionally, it offers insights into fostering a "liberated maternal" identity by leveraging media, particularly film, to reshape narratives surrounding African American motherhood. / Africology and African American Studies

The hypothesis adopted here was that the author came up with a new approach for the teaching of Mathematics in the United States in that period. The publications by Thorndike that were analyzed here were the ones related to the contents that deal with Mathematics, Psychology, and Education, with the objective of identifying the new pedagogical pattern that was developed for the teaching of Mathematics, as well as the singularity of his scientific production, considering the changes and debates that were occurring in the United States in regards to the teaching of Mathematics in the first decades of the Twentieth Century. As for what concerns Psychology, the concepts he adopted in the production of students manuals designed for the elementary and high school levels were analyzed. Also investigated were the different means that were used by Thorndike to work with students, teachers, psychologists, and educators that taught Mathematics. It was found that the manuals The Thorndike Arithmetics and The Thorndike Algebra are the most systematic expression of the author s efforts in order to apply the laws and principles of the Psychology of Learning and the Experimental Education that were developed by him, which placed him in the movement of the modernization of the teaching of Mathematics within and without the United States.

Critical review of the quality of environmental authorizations in South Africa / Andrew Brian Caddick

Caddick, Andrew Brian January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation critically reviews the quality of South African environmental authorisations through the application of a methodology adopted from the Lee and Colley (1999) environmental impact assessment (EIA) report review package. The literature review shows that to date limited research has been conducted on the quality of environmental authorisations nationally. Anecdotal evidence suggests that environmental authorisations are of weak quality; hence the development of guidelines on the compilation of environmental authorisations by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). In this dissertation, the quality of the environmental authorisations is critically reviewed against the requirements of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998) and departmental guidelines. The research concludes that only 64% of reviewed authorisations are deemed satisfactory, while 36% were unsatisfactory. When the basic assessment report (BAR) and scoping and environmental impact assessment (S&EIA) process authorisations are compared it is concluded that the there is a minimal difference in quality. The BAR achieved a 69% satisfactory rating while the S&EIA process achieved a 61% satisfactory rating. The dissertation concludes by making recommendations to improve the quality of authorisations. / M (Environmental Management), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Development Policies as Social Contract : Political leadership in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia

Gustafsson, Karl-Martin January 2007 (has links)

This thesis will show how authoritarian governments rest legitimacy on their ability to create socio-economic development. It will point to some methods used to consolidate power by authoritarian leaders in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. An authoritarian regime that successfully creates development is strengthened and does not call for democratic change in the short run. It is suggested that the widely endorsed Lipset hypothesis, that development will eventually bring democratic transition, is true only when further socio-economic development requires that the economy transfers from being based on industrial manufacturing to knowledge and creativity – not on lower levels of development. Malaysia and Singapore have reached – or try to reach – this level of development today, but restrictions on their civil societies have still not been lifted.

This thesis describes modern political history in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia in a Machiavellian tradition. The historical perspective will give a more or less plausible idea of how authoritarian regimes consolidated au-thority and what role development policies played in the leaders’ claims for authority. The conclusion will give a suggestion on how the political future in these three countries might evolve. It will point to the importance of an active and free civil society as a means to develop the nations further, rather than oppression.

This thesis will try to point to the dos and don’ts for authoritarian regimes. The ideas of Plato, Machiavelli and Hobbes provide the structures and methods that authoritarian regimes apply. It will be shown that a regime will disintegrate when it fails to comply with Plato’s and Machiavelli’s ideas. Al-though ancient, Plato and Machiavelli provide methods and structures that seem to carry relevance to the modern history of Southeast Asia.

I will point to how authoritarian rule can be maintained in the long run. What is required from the political leadership, what are their strategies and methods? What makes people to tolerate or topple authoritarian regimes? Why do some authoritarian regimes successfully create development while others do not? These are some of the questions this thesis will try to an-swer.
