Apropriações de teorias de Edward Lee Thorndike para o ensino dos saberes elementares matemáticos em revistas pedagógicas brasileiras (1920-1960)

Rezende, Alan Marcos Silva de 18 November 2016 (has links)
In this text are presented results of a research whose objective was to identify indications of appropriations of theories of Edward Lee Thorndike for the teaching of elementary mathematical knowledge in pedagogical journals that circulated in Brazil between 1920 and 1960. For this, pedagogical journal that circulated at the time were examined, for example, Revista do Ensino, Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos and Revista do Ensino. The theoretical contribution came from the use of Thorndike works, such as: The Principles of Teaching Based on Psychology (1905), The Thorndike Arithmetics (1917), The new methods in Arithmetic (1921) and The Psychology of Arithmetic (1922). As a result, it was possible to verify that Thorndike's theories began to be appropriated through Brazilian pedagogical journals from references to works such as The Thorndike Arithmetics (1917) and The Psychology of Arithmetic (1922), cited respectively in the Revista do Ensino, 1930, state of Minas Gerais, and by Murgel (1929), whose dates precede the publication of the work translated A Nova Metodologia da Aritmética, 1936. The authors of the articles made interpretations and uses of aspects for the teaching of elementary mathematical knowledge, in relation, mainly, to aspects of problem solving and tests, to criticize the problems with fanciful statements that would be difficult for students to see in a real situation, and ways to arouse student interest, by working the reasoning and the habit formation through by controlling time for to learning and monitoring of school development. Such identifications were associated to the orientations for teachers at the time of the chronological limit of this research. Thus, it was possible to affirm that there was appropriation of theories of Edward Lee Thorndike in the pedagogical journals that circulated between 1920 and 1960 in Brazil. Como referencial teórico foram utilizadas obras de Thorndike, como: The Principles of Teaching Based on Psychology (1905), The Thorndike Arithmetics (1917), The new methods in Arithmetic (1921) e The Psychology of Arithmetic (1922).

Unander-Scharin, Teresia January 2008 (has links)
The object of the essay was to investigate the argumentation in the bill, the comments from unions and the authorities, among others and the motions concerning the bill. To analysis this argumentation I have been using feminist theory, specifically Carole Lee Bacchis ”What’s the problem”-aproach. I also used Maud Eduards and Diane Sainsbury to complete my theory. They describe men as the norm of the society and women as deviant. The questions I have been investigating in the texts are - What’s the problem? - Who or what caused the problem? - Who or what is responsible for the problem? - Who has the responsibility to change the problem? - What problem is not mentioned? - Are men mentioned as a gender and a group? - Are women mentioned as a gender and a group? - How are men and women described? The investigation found that the problems that was presented in the theory was very mush present in the text that I investigated. Women are seen as passive and as willingness victims of their employers. Men on the other hand are active and are mentioned as the opposite of these women. The results however varied depending on which text was studied, but the main picture remained the same.

A chronology of her own : the treatment of time in selected works of second wave feminist speculative fiction

Donaldson, Eileen 13 October 2012 (has links)
Prior to the 1960s and 1970s most studies of time undertaken in the West treated it as an objective phenomenon, devoid of ideological inscriptions. Second Wave feminists challenged this view, arguing that time is not neutral but one of the mechanisms used by patriarchal cultures to subjugate women. The argument was that temporal modes, like everything else in patriarchal reality, had been gendered. Linear time was masculine because it was associated with the male-dominated public domain in which science, commerce and production took place. The natural world, mysticism, the private domain, domesticity and women were relegated to a cyclical temporality that was gendered feminine. In her paper “Women’s Time” Julia Kristeva suggests that three generations of feminism can be identified according to the attitude each takes to time. I use her hypothesis as a framework in order to examine the positions regarding time taken up by various feminist groups during the Second Wave. I identify liberal and socialist feminisms with Kristeva’s first generation because they criticised the fact that women had been left out of linear time and the public domain and demanded that women be reinserted into linear time. I argue that Kristeva’s second generation is represented by cultural feminists of the Second Wave who recognised an alternative women’s time and suggested that women celebrate their connection with it, defying the authority of patrilinear time to dismiss “women’s experiences”. I then propose that the perspective of Kristeva’s third generation may be identified in the work of six authors of feminist speculative fiction who were writing during the Second Wave; this perspective entails a synthesis of the two previous opposing viewpoints. This can be identified in these novels because the female protagonists are first empowered through their access to an alternative (“feminine”) temporal space that subverts the authority of patriarchal culture embedded in linear time and then they move back into patrilinear time, claiming active roles and challenging patriarchal ideology. In this thesis I thus focus on the feminist examination of time during the Second Wave and consider how it was reflected in selected works of feminist speculative fiction written at the time. The authors discussed are Octavia Butler, Marge Piercy, Joanna Russ, Ursula Le Guin, Tanith Lee and Sheri Tepper. / Thesis (DLitt)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / English / unrestricted

Assessing Outcomes of a Recycling Education and Service Program within an Elementary School

Cunningham-Scott, Carey Beth 08 1900 (has links)
During the spring 2004 a pilot school recycling program was implemented within Robert E. Lee Elementary. The primary goal of the program was to determine how recycling education in the school would affect curbside recycling rates within the surrounding community. The program was a cooperative effort between the University of North Texas, City of Denton Solid Waste Department and Keep Denton Beautiful. Throughout the first months of the study during the spring 2004, an increase in curbside recycling within the Robert E. Lee Elementary attendance zone was observed, with a dramatic decrease in participation over the summer and a rapid increase once again during the second full semester of the study. In a survey conducted with 3rd and 5th grade students at the pilot project school, most students expressed positive attitudes about recycling. Students whose survey responses indicated a high level of knowledge about what could be recycled were 37% more likely to claim to recycle regularly, than those students that scored low on the knowledge portion of the survey. Although the total amount of waste generation (recyclable and non-recyclable) at Robert E. Lee Elementary did not decrease during the study, the campus was able to divert recyclable material from their trash at a much higher rate than two other local elementary campuses with paper-only recycling and no associated recycling education program. Based upon the success of the recycling program at Robert E. Lee Elementary, the City of Denton Recycling Division has agreed to move forward with offering recycling to more schools within the Denton Independent School District during the 2005-2006 school year.

Forecasting Mortality Rates using the Weighted Hyndman-Ullah Method

Ramos, Anthony Kojo January 2021 (has links)
The performance of three methods of mortality modelling and forecasting are compared. These include the basic Lee–Carter and two functional demographic models; the basic Hyndman–Ullah and the weighted Hyndman–Ullah. Using age-specific data from the Human Mortality Database of two developed countries, France and the UK (England&Wales), these methods are compared; through within-sample forecasting for the years 1999-2018. The weighted Hyndman–Ullah method is adjudged superior among the three methods through a comparison of mean forecast errors and qualitative inspection per the dataset of the selected countries. The weighted HU method is then used to conduct a 32–year ahead forecast to the year 2050.

Visual Feedback In Voice Therapy for Individuals with Parkinson's Disease

Convey, Rachel Brooke 01 January 2019 (has links)
Parkinson ’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects one’s movement. As the disease develops, individuals begin to present with symptoms that include but are not limited to bradykinesia, rigidity, tremors, and hypokinetic dysarthria. These symptoms affect a person’s entire body, including his/her voice. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) program for treating individuals with PD is supported by over twenty-five years of research. It is considered a safe, non-invasive method to improve vocal loudness and speech clarity in individuals with PD. However, simply because LSVT is effective in its current state, it does not mean that the protocol is the most efficient or effective it can be. One potential shortcoming of LSVT is that it does not provide patients with much, if any, visual feedback. We hypothesized that visual feedback would enable the client to more easily produce a voice characterized by increased loudness and vocal quality. The results of the study do not fully support this hypothesis. There was less variability in the client’s performance within each session during the experimental weeks the patients performance over the course of the week improved, this pattern was not observed during the non-experimental weeks. Additionally, the participant expressed preference for treatment days when the visual feedback was used, finding it helpful in more effectively regulating the volume of his voice.

Geonyong Lee's Violin Works, Rhapsody for Violin and Piano and Heoten Garak: A Study of Compositional Style and Stylistic Influences

Cho, Eun 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to research the music of Geonyong Lee (이건용), one of the most recognized active Korean composers, while determining Lee's intent to compose with influences from both Western and traditional Korean music. This paper analyses Lee's violin works Rhapsody for Piano and Violin and Heoten Garak, and explains the cultural and historical significance surrounding both works in terms of traditional Korean music. Lee asserts that his primary influence Rhapsody for Piano and Violin was Nongac (농악), a traditional form of Korean farming music. Similarly, Heoten Garak displays a distinct influence of traditional Korean music genres, Heoten Garak and Pansori. By analyzing Geonyong Lee's compositional style and approach to the violin, one learns how his musical philosophies combine Western and traditional Korean music practices into a unique compositional approach. The study concludes by summarizing not only Western and traditional Korean style as evident in his music, but also the conceptual approach by which the composer attempts to bring a unique combination of these influences to his audience.

Mass for AILM by Geonyong Lee: The Composer and the Elements of Asian Music

Kim, Hong Soo 05 1900 (has links)
Geonyong Lee, the composer of Mass for AILM, is a well-known composer in Asia whose main interest lies in choral music. He has composed numerous choral works which are highly diverse in their nature. This study introduces the choral composer Geonyong Lee to the West. The significance of Geonyong Lee's Mass for AILM is the display of Asian inflection in a traditional setting of the mass ordinary. Lee's Mass for AILM employs melodic and rhythmic aspects of traditional Philippine folk songs, a Japanese mode, traditional Korean music, and various Asian percussion instruments. This study explicates these Asian influences and how Lee utilized them in his Mass for AILM.
