Belysning i kulturhistoriskt värdefulla miljöer är en komplicerad fråga, där generella riktlinjer och råd saknas. Kulturvården och belysningsbranschen sitter på stor kompetens inom sina respektive områden och här finns stor potential till värdefulla samarbeten över branschgränsen. När sådana samarbeten uteblir får det konse- kvenser för både de belysningsmässiga och antikvariska aspekterna. Ljus och belysning har stor inverkan på upplevelsen av rum och byggnader. När detta översätts till kulturhi- storiska värden, har ljuset inte minst en påverkan på upplevelsevärden och symbolvärden. Därför kan gestalt- ningen av belysning ha en inverkan på kulturhistoriska värden, som överskrider inverkan av den fysiska belys- ningsinstallationen. Det här beaktas sällan när beslut om ny belysning fattas. Ljus kan även betraktas som ett eget immateriellt kulturarv, vilket ytterligare komplicerar frågan om belys- ning i kulturhistoriska miljöer. I egenskap av kulturarv kan ljus, ljusupplevelser och ljusfenomen tillskrivas kul- turhistoriska värden som endast berör det immateriella. Om dessa också tas hänsyn till blir det inte bara en fråga om att vårda med ljus, utan även att vårda ljuset. / Lighting in historical environments is complicated question, lacking general guidelines and advice. The conser- vation sector and the lighting industry have good expertise in their respective areas and there is great potential for valuable collaborations. When such collaboration fails, it has consequences for aspects regarding both lighting and conservation. Lighting has a major impact on the experience of rooms and buildings. When it comes to conservation and questions of cultural significance this can be translated into experience values and symbolic values. Therefore, the lighting design can have an impact on the cultural significance, that exceeds the impact of the physical lighting installation. This is rarely taken into account when deciding on new lighting installations. Light can also be considered its own intangible cultural heritage, which further complicates the question of lighting in historical environments. It becomes not only a matter of lighting as a tool for preservation but also of preserving light.

Examensarbetet är en undersökning avseende implementering av Human Centric Lighting (HCL)- system i hemmamiljö. En litteraturstudie har genomförts om HCL, dess effekter på människan och LED-belysningens påverkan både på människan och miljön. För att få en bra praktisk grund gjordes även ett undersökande besök på Lindeborgsskolan i Malmö som i ett pilotprojekt har installerat HCL-system i ett klassrum. HCL handlar bland annat om att anpassa ljuset till människans varierande behov genom att variera intensitet (Lux) och färgtemperatur (Kelvin). Belysning har stor betydelse för människans välmående där en belysning med onaturlig spektralfördelning och flimmer kan leda till stress, sömnproblem samt att ögonen kan försämras. Ett bra varierande ljus kan däremot öka människans välmående, produktivitet och även ge en positivare inställning. En del forskning visar även på att HCL kan minska risken för årstidsbunden depression. Ett blått, mer intensivt ljus har en uppiggande effekt medan ett rött nerdämpat ljus verkar lugnande. Genom att utsätta kroppen för mycket blått ljus på förmiddagen men inte på eftermiddagen/kvällen gynnas kroppens cirkadiska cykel. Även rött ljus har visat sig ha en uppiggande effekt men påverkar inte den cirkadiska cykeln och kan med fördel användas även på kvällstid om en högre ljusintensitet behövs. Tre separata reglerbara belysningssystem har undersökts: Clas Ohlson WiFi Smart Bulb, IKEA trådfri belysning och Philips Hue White Ambiance. Kravet som ställdes för att belysningen skulle tas med i testet var att den skulle finnas tillgänglig i en relativt vanlig butik. Belysningen har testats både med avseende på ljusegenskaper samt energianvändning. En del av mätningarna utfördes med ett Ulbrichtklot på Clas Ohlsons ljuslaboratorium där färgspektrum, lumenvärde samt mycket annan information om ljuskällan kunde tas fram, samt med en handhållen spektrometer för att se flimmeravgivningen ifrån lampan vid olika inställningar. Energianvändningen undersöktes beträffande förändringar vid variation av färgtemperatur, intensitet och även i de fall som separat reglerutrustning krävdes. De tre belysningssystemen visade sig ha olika fördelar och nackdelar där en till slut valdes ut för att installeras i ett sovrum i utbildningsprojektet Dalarnas Villa. Baserat på ett tidigare gjort ljusschema, i en masteruppsats gjord av en ljusdesigner vid KTH, togs ett nytt ljusschema fram för sovrummet som förändrar ljusets intensitet och färgtemperatur för att främja den cirkadiska cykeln. Då författarna ser att detta är ett viktigt ämne så har varje möjlighet till att visa upp det installerade systemet tagits. Karlsson et al. 2016) / This thesis is a study concerning the implementation of Human Centric Lighting (HCL)-systems in the home environment. A literature study has been conducted on light, its effects on humans and the influence of LED lighting on both humans and the environment. To obtain a good practical foundation, an investigative study visit was also made to Lindeborgsskolan in Malmö, which as a pilot project has installed HCL systems in a classroom. HCL is, among other things, about adapting the light to man's varying needs by varying intensity (Lux) and color temperature (Kelvin). Lighting is of great importance to human well-being where lighting with unnatural spectral distribution and flicker can lead to stress, sleep problems and that the eyes can deteriorate. A good variety of light can, on the other hand, increase human well-being, productivity and give a positive attitude. Some research also shows that HCL can reduce the risk of seasonal depression. A blue, more intense light has a wakeup effect, while a red low intensity light feels soothing. By exposing the body to much blue light in the morning but not in the afternoon / evening, the body's circadian cycle benefits. Even red light has been shown to have a stimulating effect but does not affect the circadian cycle and can be used even in the evening if a higher light intensity is needed. Three separate controllable lighting systems have been investigated: “Clas Ohlson Wi-Fi Smart Bulb”, “IKEA trådfri” and “Philips Hue White Ambiance”. The lighting has been tested both in terms of light quality and energy use. The light quality was examined partly with an “Ulbrichtklot” at Clas Ohlson's light laboratory where color spectrum as well as various other information could be obtained, and with a hand-held spectrometer to see the flicker output from the lamp at different settings. The energy consumption was investigated regarding variation of color temperature, intensity and even in cases where separate control equipment was required. The three lighting systems were shown to have different advantages where eventually the Philips Hue Ambience White was selected to be installed in a bedroom in the project villa Dalarnas Villa. Based on a previous master thesis, a light schedule was developed that changes the intensity and color temperature of light to promote the circadian cycle. As the authors see this as an important topic, every opportunity to show the installed system has been taken. Let there be light... Characterizing the Effects of Adverse Lighting on Semantic Segmentation of Wound Images and Mitigation using a Deep Retinex ModelIyer, Akshay B. 14 May 2020 (has links)
Wound assessment using a smartphone image has recently emerged as a novel way to provide actionable feedback to patients and caregivers. Wound segmentation is an important step in image-based wound assessment, after which the wound area can be analyzed. Semantic segmentation algorithms for wounds assume favorable lighting conditions. However, smartphone wound imaging in natural environments can encounter adverse lighting that can cause several errors during semantic segmentation of wound images, which in turn affects the wound analysis. In this work, we study and characterize the effects of adverse lighting on the accuracy of semantic segmentation of wound images. Our findings inform a deep learning-based approach to mitigate the adverse effects. We make three main contributions in this work. First, we create the first large-scale Illumination Varying Dataset (IVDS) of 55440 images of a wound moulage captured under systematically varying illumination conditions and with different camera types and settings. Second, we characterize the effects of changing light intensity on U-Net’s wound semantic segmentation accuracy and show the luminance of images to be highly correlated with the wound segmentation performance. Especially, we show low-light conditions to deteriorate segmentation performance highly. Third, we improve the wound Dice scores of U-Net for low-light images to up to four times the baseline values using a deep learning mitigation method based on the Retinex theory. Our method works well in typical illumination levels observed in homes/clinics as well for a wide gamut of lighting like very dark conditions (20 Lux), medium-intensity lighting (750 - 1500 Lux), and even very bright lighting (6000 Lux).

Fabrication and Characterization of GaN-Based Superluminescent Diode for Solid-State Lighting and Visible Light CommunicationAlatawi, Abdullah 04 1900 (has links)
To date, group-III-nitride has undergone continuous improvements to provide a broader range of industrial applications, such as solid-state lighting (SSL), visible light communications (VLC), and light projection. Recently, VLC has attained substantial attention in the field of wireless communication because it offers ~ 370 THz of bandwidth of unregulated visible spectrum, which makes it a critical factor in the evolution of the 5G networks and beyond.
GaN-based light-emitting diode (LED) and laser diode (LD) have become increasingly appealing in energy-sufficient SSL replacing conventional light sources. However, III- nitride LEDs suffer from efficiency-droop in their external quantum efficiency associated with high current densities, and their modulation bandwidth is limited to 10 ~ 100 MHz. Although LDs have shown gigabit-modulation bandwidth, unfavorable artifacts, such as speckles are observed, which may raise a concern about eye safety.
This dissertation is devoted to the fabrication and electrical and optical characterization of a new class of III-nitride light-emitter known as superluminescent diode (SLD). SLD works in an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) regime, and it combines several advantages from both LD and LED, such as droop-free, speckle-free, low-spatial coherence, broader emission, high-optical power, and directional beam. Here, SLDs were fabricated by a focused ion beam by tilting the front facet of the waveguide to suppress the lasing mode. They showed a high-power of 474 mW on c-plane GaN-substrate with a large spectral bandwidth of 6.5 nm at an optical power of 105 mW. To generate SLD- based white light, a YAG-phosphor-plate was integrated, and a CRI of 85.1 and CCT of
3392 K were measured. For the VLC link, SLD showed record high-data rates of 1.45 Gbps and 3.4 Gbps by OOK and DMT modulation schemes, respectively. Additionally, a widely single- and dual-wavelength tunability were designed using SLD-based external cavity (SLD-EC) configuration for a tunable blue laser source.
These results underscore the practicality of c-plane SLDs in realizing high-power, high data rate, speckle-free, and droop-free SSL-VLC apparatus. Additionally, the SLD-EC configuration allows a wide range of applications, including biomedical applications, optical communication, and high-resolution spectroscopy.

Molecular Beam Epitaxy-Grown InGaN Nanowires and Nanomushrooms for Solid State LightingGasim, Anwar A. 05 1900 (has links)
InGaN is a promising semiconductor for solid state lighting thanks to its bandgap which spans the entire visible regime of the electromagnetic spectrum. InGaN is grown heteroepitaxially due to the absence of a native substrate; however, this results in a strained film and a high dislocation density—two effects that have been associated with efficiency droop, which is the disastrous drop in efficiency of a light-emitting diode (LED) as the input current increases. Heteroepitaxially grown nanowires have recently attracted great interest due to their property of eliminating the detrimental effects of the lattice mismatch and the corollary efficiency droop. In this study, InGaN nanowires were grown on a low-cost Si (111) substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. Unique nanostructures, taking the form of mushrooms, have been observed in localized regions on the samples. These nanomushrooms consist of a nanowire body with a wide cap on top. Photoluminescence characterization revealed that the nanowires emit violet-blue, whilst the nanomushrooms emit a broad yellow-orange-red luminescence. The simultaneous emission from the nanowires and nanomushrooms forms white light.
Structural characterization of a single nanomushroom via transmission electron microscopy revealed a simultaneous increase in indium and decrease in gallium at the interface between the body and the cap. Furthermore, the cap itself was found to be indium-rich, confirming it as the source of the longer wavelength yellow-orange-red luminescence. It is believed that the nanomushroom cap formed as a consequence of the saturation of growth on the c-plane of the nanowire. It is proposed that the formation of an indium droplet on the tip of the nanowire saturated growth on the c-plane, forcing the indium and gallium adatoms to incorporate on the sidewall m-planes instead, but only at the nanowire tip. This resulted in the formation of a mushroom-like cap on the tip. How and why the indium droplets formed is not entirely clear, but a localized temperature dip may have been the cause. Ultimately, the simultaneous growth of nanowires and nanomushrooms on the same substrate may pave the way to the development of a phosphor-free, efficient, inherent white LED.
