É no contraponto entre realismo, modernismo e pós-modernismo que Alice Munro constrói suas narrativas, um momento de transição e concepções renovadas a respeito do trabalho literário que, expresso em sua obra, conjuga os contrastes por meio de técnicas sofisticadas. A obra Lives of girls and women (2001), em destaque neste trabalho, é classificada como romance por alguns críticos - e até pela própria autora -, assumindo, por vezes, características de um Bildungsroman. No entanto, é constituída por contos, fragmentação que favorece a independência de cada narrativa, mas que não rompe definitivamente com a noção de continuidade, característica do romance. É nessa forma de trabalhar com o conto na obra citada que o projeto em questão se detém, buscando verificar como essa questão se dá dentro da estrutura do livro estudado e seus efeitos de sentido. Também constitui o objetivo do estudo identificar, em meio a essa fragmentação, o labirinto de vozes que, em parte, é responsável pelo efeito de reminiscência. / Abstract: Alice Munro stands out as a great short-story writer with texts that, elaborated in a new form, defy the genre qualification and are characterized by the open endings. It is in the counterpoint between realism, modernism and post-modernism that Alice Munro builds her narratives, a moment of transition and renewed conceptions related to the literary work that, expressed in her pieces, conjugates the contrasts by sophisticated techniques. The piece Lives of girls and women (2001), in prominence in this work, is classified as a novel by some critics - and the writer herself -, having, sometimes, the characteristics of a Bildungsroman. However, it is made of shortstories, fragmentation that favours the independence of each narrative, but that does not break definitively the notion of continuity, characteristic of the novel. It is this way of working with the short-story in the cited piece that the project in question studies, trying to verify how this situation happens inside the book structure and its meaning effects. It is also an aim of the study to identify, in the middle of this fragmentation, the maze of voices that, in part, is responsible for the reminiscence effect. / Mestre

Orientador: Maria das Graças Gomes Villa da Silva / Banca: Alzira Leite Vieira Allegro / Banca: Maria Lucia Outeiro Fernandes / Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar que o ponto central unificador dos contos "Chaddeleys and Flemings" e "The Moons of Jupiter", do volume The Moons of Jupiter, de Alice Munro, é o uso das associações que ligam o retorno ao passado através da narrativa de uma protagonista adulta, que reconta alguns fatos ocorridos em sua infância e em sua vida familiar. Nesta trajetória, o que é revelado é o conflito feminino na busca por outros papeis além de esposa e mãe. As estratégias narrativas usadas pela autora canadense para obter este resultado estão fundamentadas no uso da memória por suas personagens. Para demonstrar como isso funciona no texto de Munro, os estudos freudianos são utilizados na análise, enfatizando o trabalho e a força do inconsciente manifesta no exercício de anamnese da protagonista-narradora. / Abstract: This thesis aims to demonstrate that the unifying central point of the short stories "Chaddeleys and Flemings" and "The Moons of Jupiter", from the volume The Moons of Jupiter, by Alice Munro, is the use of associations that link the return to the past through the narrative of the adult protagonist, who retells some facts occurred in childhood and those related to family life. In this trajectory, what is revealed is the women's conflict by seeking other roles than that of wife and mother. The narrative strategies used by the Canadian author to achieve this result are founded in the use of memory by her characters. To show how that works in Munro's text, Freudian studies are used in the analysis, emphasizing the work of the unconscious force manifested in the exercise of anamnesis of the protagonist-narrator. / Mestre

Com ele, pretendo demonstrar a relação existente entre o universo romanesco proposto por Urquhart e aquele da tradição gótica inglesa de autoria feminina, com a qual ela abertamente dialoga. Além disso, aproximo Changing Heaven da série anglo-canadense para o mesmo gênero, estabelecendo, entre eles, relações que visam a caracterizar a feição assumida por esta narrativa junto ao país de Urquhart. Por fim, discorro brevemente sobre de que forma Changing Heaven dialoga com ou revisa a linhagem/ancestralidade de romances góticos de autoria feminina. O conceito de gótico feminino utilizado aqui é aquele cunhado por Ellen Moers (1977). Para o estudo do gótico, embora muitas fontes tenham sido consultadas, vali-me principalmente das concepções de Eugenia DeLamotte e seu Perils of the night: a feminist study of the nineteenth century Gothic (1990). Neste estudo, defendo que a moldura gótica adotada por Urquhart em Changing Heaven permite-lhe sublinhar os temas da identidade, alteridade, memória e o processo de criação artística, bem como reafirmar sua escritura através do diálogo com o romance Wuthering Heights (1897), da inglesa Emily Brontë, a grande matriz narratológica por trás do seu romance. / The present work proposes a study of Jane Urquhart’s Changing Heaven, a novel first published in Toronto, Canada, by Emblem Editions Press in 1990. It aims at demonstrating the relation between the novelistic universe as conceived by Urquhart and that of the female Gothic English tradition, with which she overtly dialogs. Moreover, I bring Changing Heaven near the Anglo-Canadian series of the same genre so as to trace parallels that ultimately intend do explicit the features that shape this kind of narrative in Urquhart’s country. Last, I briefly go over on how Changing Heaven dialogs with or contributes to revise the lineage/tradition of female Gothic novels. The concept of female Gothic used here is the one coined by Ellen Moers (1977). For the study of the Gothic itself, even though many sources have been consulted, Eugenia Delamotte’s Perils of the night: a feminist study of the nineteenth century Gothic (1990) has proved to be especially relevant. In this work, the point made is that the Gothic frame used by Urquhart allows this writer to underline issues concerning identity, otherness, memory and the process of artistic creation, as well as to restate her own writing praxis through the dialog with the novel Wuthering Heights (1897), by Emily Brönte, the main intertext behind Urquhart’s novel.

O romance, que revela seu aspecto intertextual em seu próprio título, pretende elucidar como o espaço - um internato para meninas nos arredores de Toronto – simbolicamente representado pelo sótão e pelo porão, é essencial para a construção do processo de formação feminino, através da subversão do gênero literário tradicional Bildungsroman. No primeiro capítulo, a vida e a obra de Susan Swan é estudada, assim como o romance em pauta e sua recepção crítica. No segundo capítulo, são apresentadas as teorias sobre espaço de Gaston Bachelard e de Michel Foucault, além de considerações sobre o romance de formação de autoria feminina. O terceiro capítulo é dedicado à análise, de acordo com as teorias previamente colocadas, e destaca-se, aqui, a relação entre o espaço da escola e o processo de formação de Mary Beatrice Bradford, a protagonista. Por último, mas não menos importante, esse estudo mostra o poder da literatura como forma de evidenciar a quebra do emudecimento das mulheres na formação de suas identidades femininas / This dissertation is grounded on recent theories about Female Bildungsroman or novels of education in a feminist perspective. It aims at establishing the relationship between space and the novel of education in the novel The Wives of Bath, published in 1993 by the Canadian author Susan Swan. The novel, revealing its intertextual aspect by its title, focuses on shedding a light on how the space – a girls’ boarding school on the outskirts of Toronto – symbolically represented by the attic and the basement is essential to build a female formation process subverting the traditional genre itself. In the first chapter, life and work of Susan Swan are studied, as well as the novel and its critical reception. In the second chapter, the theories concerning spaces by Gaston Bachelard and Michel Foucault and also the theories on the female Bildungsromane are covered. The third chapter is focused on the analysis according to the relation observed between the spaces and the formative process of Mary Beatrice Bradford – the protagonist. At last but not least, the intention of this dissertation is to spread the power of literature as a way of evidencing the muting breaking of women in the formation of their feminine identities

Esta dissertação investiga de que maneiras a representação do sujeito canadense pode ser encontrada em dois romances representativos da literatura canadense contemporânea: Obasan, de Joy Kogawa, e Alias Grace, de Margaret Atwood. Esta investigação também demonstra que a busca pela definição da identidade canadense tem sido tema constante e relevante da cultura deste país. A indefinição quanto ao que significa ser canadense também tem permeado a literatura canadense ao longo dos séculos, notadamente desde o século XIX. A fim de observar a representação literária da busca pela definição da identidade canadense, esta investigação aborda os conceitos relativos à representação de grupos subalternos tradicionalmente silenciados. A análise comparativa dos romances citados contempla a relação entre memória e trauma autobiográficos, assim como as semelhanças narrativas entre ficção e história. Esta investigação também verifica de que maneiras a literatura pós-moderna emprega documentação oficial, relatos históricos e dados (auto) biográficos a serviço da reescrita da história através da metaficção historiográfica / This dissertation investigates the ways through which the representation of the Canadian subject might be observed in two representative novels of contemporary Canadian literature: Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, and Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood. This investigation also demonstrates that the search for the definition of a specific Canadian identity has been a constant and relevant theme to the countrys culture. The lack of definition concerning the meaning of being Canadian has also permeated Canadian Literature throughout the centuries, most notably since the XIX century. In order to observe the literary representation of the Canadian search for identity, this investigation makes use of the concepts related to the representation of traditionally silenced subaltern groups. The comparative analysis of the abovementioned novels contemplates the relationship between autobiographical memory and trauma, as well as the narrative similarities between fiction and history. This investigation also verifies the ways postmodern literature employs official documentation, historical accounts and (auto) biographical information in the rewriting of history through historiographic metafiction

Esta união, do familiar e do estranho, cria um senso de ironia e duplicidade de observação em relação a lugares e às pessoas, permitindo que se explore a luta canadense com a identidade evidenciada na escritora. A ambivalência que Munro sente como escritora é uma de suas preocupações pessoais que contribuem para essa profundidade emocional e vivacidade em sua ficção. Algumas de suas melhores histórias expressam sentimentos que provocam questionamentos em qualquer leitor mais sensível e que são, ao mesmo tempo, explorações e descobertas da própria emoção da autora. Para o desenvolvimento deste estudo, apoiamo-nos nas reflexões de Osman Lins, Bachelard, Ozíris Borges Silva no que diz respeito à espacialização da narrativa, como também em estudos de Bakhtin que explora a ideia de cronotopo. Também constitui objetivo identificar os momentos de epifania e os elementos góticos que atuam na configuração das personagens de Munro. / The main goal of this paper is to analyse, from the point of view of narratology, three short stories: “The Peace of Utrecht”, “Meneseteung” and “Fiction”, present, respectively, in the collections Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), Friend of my Youth (1991) and Too Much Happiness (2009), from the contemporary Canadian writer Alice Munro, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, whose short stories, elaborated in a renewed way, are characterized by open ends, have realistic descriptions of southwest Ontario, depict familiar scenes that facilitate the introduction of the strange, the mysterious, the unknown and even the fantastic. This connection of the familiar and the strange, creates a sense of irony and duplicity in observation concerning places and people, allowing that the Canadian fight for identity is evidenced. The ambivalence Munro feels as a writer is one of her personal concerns that contribute to emotional and vivacious depth in her fiction. Some of her best stories show feelings that raise a lot of questions in any sensitive reader and that are, at the same time, the writer´s explorations and discoveries. To the development of this study, we will base our reflections in Osman Lins, Bachelard and Ozíris Borges Silva concerning narrative space as well as Bakhtin that explores the idea of cronotopos. It is also the aim of the paper to identify the epiphanic moments and the gothic elements that act in the description of Munro´s characters.
