And a research that had the body of work personal stories of some readers to perform the following activities: three high school students, an academic Pedagogy and another pharmacy, a math teacher, a waitress and a housewife. Despite the different activities, all have an interest in common: a fondness for reading and bestsellers books "self-help''. It is common to hear speeches about the growing disaffection of the people around reading. However, the sales figures of books, especially those intended for young people has increased dramatically. It is clear, from the works listed as top sellers lists published in some weekly magazines, the current reading practices turn to works that are considered part of "literature'' mass. In contrast, in schools, the resistance readings of the works forming part of the canonical tradition has also increased. The main objective was to investigate the reading practices of the respondents, with the larger purpose of understanding the reasons that lead to preference for such books, getting to know the identity of people through their stories about their own lives. For this purpose, as a working method qualitative research with semi-structured interviews, recorded and transcribed and analysis of this corpus. Importantly, this research did not seek to make value judgments or discuss about the aesthetic quality of the works cited, however, the focus here was aimed at those who practice these readings, or the player itself and not the work itself. Marcia Abreu, Leyla Perrone-Moisés, Stuart Hall, Luiz Costa Lima and Hugo Achugar are among theorists that supported this discussion. The analysis showed that a major reason for these readers prefer the works of "literature mass , is language, which presents itself as more current, more simple, making the story more dynamic and better enjoyment. / É comum ouvir falas a respeito do desinteresse cada vez maior das pessoas em torno da leitura. Entretanto, os números de vendas de livros, principalmente aqueles destinados ao público jovem, têm aumentado vertiginosamente. Percebe-se, a partir das obras constantes como as mais vendidas em listas semanais publicadas em algumas revistas, que as práticas de leitura atuais se voltam para obras que fazem parte da considerada literatura de massa . Em contrapartida, nas escolas, a resistência às leituras das obras canônicas também tem aumentado. Diante disso, foi realizada a atual pesquisa, intitulada Leitoras de best-sellers: o que determina suas escolhas? , que tem como corpus de trabalho histórias pessoais de algumas leitoras que exercem as seguintes atividades: duas estudantes do ensino médio, uma acadêmica de Pedagogia e outra de Farmácia, uma professora de Matemática, uma Copeira e uma dona de casa. Apesar das atividades diferentes, todas apresentam um interesse em comum: a predileção pela leitura de best-sellers e livros de autoajuda . O objetivo principal foi investigar as práticas de leitura das entrevistadas, com o propósito maior de compreender os motivos que levam à preferência por tais livros, buscando conhecer a identidade dessas pessoas por meio dos relatos de suas vidas. Para tanto, utilizou-se como metodologia de trabalho, a pesquisa qualitativa com entrevistas semi-estruturadas, filmadas, transcritas e a análise desse corpus. Importante ressaltar que essa pesquisa não procurou realizar juízos de valor ou discutir em torno da qualidade estética das obras citadas, pelo contrário, o foco aqui foi voltado para quem pratica essas leituras, ou seja, o próprio leitor e não a obra em si. Márcia Abreu, Leyla Perrone-Moisés, Stuart Hall e Hugo Achugar estão entre os teóricos que embasaram essa discussão. A análise demonstrou que um dos principais motivos para esses leitores preferirem as obras da literatura de massa é a linguagem, que se apresenta como mais atual, mais simples, tornando a narrativa mais dinâmica e com melhor fruição. Os resultados desta dissertação contribuem para dar luz às práticas de leitura atuais, que já não podem mais ser desprezadas. Apesar das diversas críticas lançadas aos livros da literatura de massa , estes têm se destacado entre os preferidos dos leitores atuais. Essa pesquisa favorece a uma revisão de posturas e de olhares diante desses livros e dos atuais leitores.

Partindo de considerações acerca da escrita memorialística, nosso intuito é apontar possíveis leituras da obra em questão. A principal delas refere-se à cena judiciária na autobiografia, na qual o autor realiza uma dupla empresa: a inquisição de si mesmo e do regime militar. Nesse tribunal metafórico, as motivações de Marcelo seriam a culpa pelo próprio infortúnio – a paralisia corporal, após o mergulho em uma lagoa, e a revolta diante do desaparecimento do pai, ocorrido durante o período ditatorial brasileiro, nos anos 1970. Também faz parte de nossa pesquisa, a investigação das estratégias empreendidas pelo autobiógrafo, em sua busca por um veredicto satisfatório de seus leitores⁄juízes. O questionamento do paradigma da verdade e o desvendamento de uma retórica da sinceridade servem de embasamento neste nosso segundo objetivo. / This study has as subjective Feliz Ano Velho (1982), by writer Marcelo Rubens Paiva. Leaving of reflections concerning the memory writing, our intention is to point possible readings of the workmanship in question. The main one of them mentions the judiciary scene to it in the autobiography, in which the author carries through a double company: the inquisition of itself exactly and the military regimen. In this metaphoric court, the motivations of Marcelo would be the guilt for the proper misfortune - the corporal paralysis, after the diving in a lagoon, and the revolt ahead of the disappearance of the father, occurred during the brazilian ditatorial period, in years 1970. Also it is part of our research, the inquiry of the strategies undertaken for the autobiographer, in its search for a satisfactory verdict of its readers⁄ judges. The questioning of the paradigm of the truth and the clarification of a rhetoric of the sincerity serve of basement in this our as objective one.

Além de coligir um detalhado perfil editorial e histórico da série junto aos arquivos da editora, que inclui tanto informações relativas a tiragens, formatos e reedições quanto investigações em torno do mistério envolvendo um dos livros do corpus, possivelmente silenciado pela própria editora durante os anos 70 (O Caso do Rei da Casa Preta), buscamos comparar também as narrativas com os parâmetros, regras e lógica próprios do gênero policial, no entendimento de teóricos como W. H. Auden, Todorov, Boileau-Narcejac, Otto Maria Carpeaux, Medeiros e Albuquerque e Sandra Reimão, entre outros. Ao redigirmos uma biografia do autor com base em entrevistas pouco divulgadas e correspondência ativa e passiva inédita descoberta durante a pesquisa no Arquivo Municipal de Casa Branca, procuramos ainda sugerir novas inflexões de leitura para o entendimento da carreira e obra de Ganymédes José, bem como chamar atenção para a relevância de seu trabalho no contexto da literatura infantojuvenil brasileira. Finalmente, tomando como base o primeiro volume da série, O Caso da Mula-sem-cabeça, oferecemos uma análise crítica e leitura do corpus destacando o que ele tem de mais curioso: 1) seu caráter tanto de literatura policial (onde se privilegia a razão e o intelecto como forma de desvendar crimes e mistérios) quanto de literatura de massa (os livros eram assinados de forma diferenciada pela autor e feitos por encomenda para a editora); 2) o curioso deslocamento do palco de suas narrativas de combate ao crime da cidade – que é o berço e quase mesmo a raison d' être do romance policial – para o campo; 3) um personagem principal (a Inspetora, a menina Eloísa) que alia a razão de um Sherlock Holmes à tradição clássica e um respeito às instituições (igreja, família, figuras de autoridade): diferentemente da prima Malu, vinda da capital São Paulo, Eloísa está sempre atenta às obrigatórias orações, ao respeito a pais e professores, à superioridade da cultura erudita e, finalmente, às vantagens da vida no campo contra todo o tumulto, violência e poluição das grandes cidades. Transparece, ao final de nosso trabalho, um autor que viveu para seus livros e que, na “Inspetora”, parecia resgatar o típico embate oitocentista entre a vida rural, a vida da tradição e dos valores cristãos e clássicos, e a vida urbana, a vida da velocidade e da tecnologia, dos valores modernos e menos humanistas. / The present dissertation examines the "A Inspetora" series, by Brazilian writer Ganymédes José Santos de Oliveira, who produced for publishing house Ediouro between 1974 and 1988 almost 40 crime pocket books aimed at young readers about a group of detective kids living at the countryside (the "Cardboard Owl Gang"). Apart from compiling an extensive and detailed profile on the historical and editorial aspects of the series using data prospected at Ediouro´s archives, which include information regarding pressing runs, formats and reissues as much as forays into the mystery around one of the books of the corpus, kept unpublished by the editor during the 70’s (O Caso do Rei da Casa Preta), we also aim at comparing the “Inspetora” narratives with the crime fiction parameters, logic and rules, as seen by scholars such as W. H. Auden, Todorov, Boileau-Narcejac, Otto Maria Carpeaux, Medeiros e Albuquerque and Sandra Reimão, among others. By presenting a biography of the author based on rare interviews and recently found epistolar material unearthed during our research at the Casa Branca’s City Archive, we propose new angles for approaching Ganymédes José and his work, as well as raising a flag that should draw more attention to the relevance of his writing in the context of Brazilian child-young adult literature. Finally, taking as starting point the inaugural volume of the series, O Caso da Mula-sem-cabeça, we offer a critical and analytical reading of the corpus bringing forth what is most peculiar in it: 1) its double aspect as crime fiction (in which one favours reason and intellect as the way to solve crimes and enigmas) and mass literature (being the books signed with pseudonym and produced as work-by-hire); 2) the curious displacement of the “stage” where the law-upholding stories take place, from the city – the craddle and even the raison d' être of the detective novel – to the countryside; 3) a main character (the Inspetora, the girl Eloísa) who allies the reasoning of a Sherlock Holmes to classic traditions and a respect to hegemonic institutions (church, family, figures of authority): very different from her cousin Malu, from capital São Paulo, Eloísa is always very careful with the mandatory prayers, with the respect due to parents and teachers, with the superiority of the erudite culture and, finally, with the advantages of the life in the countryside compared to all the turmoil, violence and pollution of the big cities. By the end of our work, shines through an author who lived for his books and who, in the “Inspetora” series, brings to life the typical 19th Century clash between rural life, tradition and Christian values and a urban life too fast and modern and technological, too devoid of humanist principles.

[pt] Nesta dissertação propomos uma análise da construção da imagem do escritor Paulo Coelho como uma celebridade mundialmente conhecida e, conseqüentemente, da progressão de tal imagem para uma marca vendável. Assim, examinaremos, de maneira cronológica, os elementos necessários para que a construção seja realizada. Para tanto, é necessário realizar um estudo resumido sobre os temas abordados na obra literária de Paulo Coelho, bem como nos debruçarmos na questão do carisma necessário para a efetivação da transformação de um escritor em pop star. Este carisma permeará boa parte da dissertação e é considerado como algo que pode ser parcialmente construído. Antes, porém, para entendermos como a vida literária brasileira foi moldada, faremos uma breve viagem no tempo desde o Romantismo até os primeiros anos do século XX. / [en] This dissertation analyses the writer Paulo Coelho´s image buildup process to become a world wide know celebrity, and, as a consequence, the transformation of such image into a saleable mark. The elements which are required for this buildup process are examined in a chronological manner. A study summarizing the subjects treated by Paulo Coelho in his literary works is presented, followed by considerations on the charisma that is required to allow for the transformation of a writer into a pop-star. Such charisma will be present throughout many parts of the dissertation, and it will be considered as something that can be partialy constructed. In order to allow for the understanding of how Brazilian literary life was casted, a short literary time trip from the Romantics days to the beginning of the 20th Century is also presented.

Therefore, this thesis has as its object of study the book Leopardos de Kafka, by Moacyr Scliar, which is part of the collection of detective novels Literature and Death, released by the publisher Companhia das Letras. This study aims to show the narrative resources and how they were used in the novel aforementioned, so that we can show that they break the existing boundaries between Classical Literature and Best Sellers and the standards of the traditional detective novel. For this objective to be achieved, the theoretical foundation of this thesis was based, mainly, on studies of the detective novel, done by Boileau and Narcejac (1991), Albuquerque (1979), Reimão (1983, 2005) and others; in researches on Best Sellers, done by Sodré (1978), Caldas (2000) among others and on studies of Historiographic Metafiction, postmodernism and narcissistic narrative, made by Hutcheon (1984, 2002). / O panorama da produção literária da década de noventa e dos primeiros anos do século XXI é marcado pelo lançamento de alguns gêneros literários, especificamente o que a Teoria Literária definiu como sendo romance, que não se ajustam nem às regras da Literatura Culta nem às peculiaridades do que se convencionou chamar de Literatura de Massa. Por isso, esta tese tem como objeto de estudo o livro Leopardos de Kafka, de Moacyr Scliar, pertencente à coleção de romances policiais Literatura ou Morte, lançada pela editora Companhia das Letras. O presente estudo objetiva mostrar os recursos narrativos e o modo como estes foram empregados, no romance citado, a fim de que se possa evidenciar que eles rompem com as fronteiras existentes entre a Literatura Culta e a Literatura de Massa e com as regras do romance policial tradicional. Para que esse objetivo fosse alcançado, a fundamentação teórica desta tese foi baseada, principalmente, nos estudos sobre o romance policial, feitos por Narcejac (1991), Albuquerque (1979), Reimão (1983, 2005) e outros; nas pesquisas sobre Literatura de Massa, realizadas por Sodré (1978), Caldas (2000) e outros e nos estudos sobre Metaficção Historiográfica, pós-modernismo e narrativa narcísica, realizados por Hutcheon (1984, 2002).

Because of the relationship between literature and commercial activities that regard the culture industry, mass literature has its value questioned. Questions related to selling, narrating and language are the most debated hot topics when it comes to this type of literature, which ends up being regarded as a "subliterature" or a literature which is less worth-reading. Therefore, having the relationship between art and the cultural industry in mind, the present study aims at realizing an approach that encompasses all social, historical and cultural aspects related to the literary production aimed to the mass, through a subject-reader approach. Also, we will differ the nomenclatures attributed to these literature books- best seller, mega seller, mega best seller, and mass literature- as well as identify the possibilities of approaching and legitimizing the aforementioned categories. Thus, our aim here is to reflect and to question the assumptions about what literature is and the influence of the cultural industry in the arts, through a theoretical background that interacts with the theories of literature, and the social, cultural and historical studies.This way, this study will offer a theoretical opening in terms of contemporary literature and its influences in the mass culture, leading to other research about this topic in the future. / Verifica-se na literatura contemporânea a ocorrência de um constante diálogo com a cultura de massa e os processos de industrialização advindos da última metade do século XX. Na tessitura proposta entre literatura e os processos mercantis que envolvem a indústria cultural, é questionado o próprio valor da obra literária voltada para e pela massa. Questões recorrentes como vendagem, narrativa e linguagem são os pressupostos mais debatidos acerca dessas obras, que acabam por adquirirum caráter de subliteraturaou literatura de menor valor. Logo, pensando na relação entre arte e indústria cultural, o presente estudo visa realizar uma abordagem que abranja aspectos sociais, históricos e culturais acerca da produção literária veiculada às massas, perfazendo, principalmente, o caminho do sujeito-leitor. Por essa perspectiva, diferenciaremos nomenclaturas atribuídas às essas obras best-seller, mega-seller, mega best-seller e literatura de massa como também identificaremospossibilidades de abordagem e legitimação das mesmas. Portanto, temos como objetivos centrais deste estudo, refletir e questionar as postulações sobre o que é literatura e a inserção da indústria cultural nas artes, através de um arcabouço que interage entre teorias da literatura e estudos sociais, culturais e históricos. Pretende-se, assim, viabilizar uma abertura teórica acerca da literatura contemporânea e suas intersecções com a cultura de massa, possibilitando a realização de outras pesquisas futuras sobre a temática.
