Hit kommer en ung man, Jakob, för att under en sommar mellan lärarexamen och arbetslivet verka som reporter. Arbetet tvingar honom in i förståelsen av vad som en gång fanns och vad den kraften gjorde med människorna i staden, en insikt som blir mer och mer skrämmande för honom. Det som från början tycks vara Jakobs egen oförmåga att hantera omgivningen visar sig vara omgivningens natur.

Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets have become the interest of several generations of Russian translators. Overall, after their first appearance in the middle of the nineteenth century, at least thirty-five Russian translations of the complete sonnet collection have been produced so far, though mostly during the last three decades. The overall objective of the present thesis is to examine the evolution of Russian translations of Shakespeare’s sonnets over the years. The thesis is novel in that it offers an analysis of specific linguistic, literary and cultural challenges the numerous Russian translators have dealt with while translating the sonnets, as well as the strategies adopted in an effort to resolve them. In order to achieve the study objectives, several individual sonnets and a number of their Russian translations have been selected as a sample representing challenging areas that have been more closely investigated in four articles. The method of cross comparison has been applied throughout the study. Both the introductory part and the articles address certain problematic translation issues, such as the sonnets’ formal structure, the pronouns of address, grammatical gender, bawdy language, sexual puns, culture-specific items, and metaphors. The results provide evidence for seeing translation as a multi-layered and ever-changing process, which, apart from the pure linguistic tasks, combines historical, political and ideological aspects. The findings of the study suggest that translation competence, namely deep understanding of the context and its fundamental cultural and social features, motivates the translator’s interpretation of the contradictions and uncertainties of Shakespeare’s poems. Those include the sonnets genre, relation to Shakespeare’s biography, the order of the poems in the first 1609 Quarto. The analysis also identifies the ways in which the target language’s social and historical context have had an impact on the choices made by the translators. On the whole, the study’s results do not contradict Mikhail Gasparov’s model describing the pendulum-like movement from “free” to “literal” approaches through the history of Russian literary translation.

Abstract   This essay is analysing the presence of cleaning and grooming in the novels Shakespeare’s Landlord and Dead Until Dark, both by Charlaine Harris. Against the backdrop of teratology, the essay demonstrates how cleaning and grooming are means for the female protagonists Lily and Sookie to get rid of their inner and outer monstrosities. Their respective monstrosity is defined against the definition of monstrosity by David J. Skal in Monster Theory Seven Theses and the need to get rid of monstrosity is discussed against the theories of Julia Kristeva and Mary Douglas.

Sociala medier, och särskilt Facebook, skiljer sig mycket från de äldre medierna (tidningar, radio, TV etc.) då det är plattformar där “vanliga människor”, utan journalistisk skolning, har möjlighet att uttrycka sig inför stora publiker. Det sker en form av paradigmskifte i vad som anses retoriskt effektivt och därmed hur vi ska presentera oss själva. Jag ser att rollen en administratör tar på en Facebooksida skiljer sig mycket från rollen en journalist på en tidning får när de skriver. De presenterar sig på skilda sätt och Facebookadministratören håller sig i regel mer personlig och nära sina läsare. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur retoriska strategier för självpresentation, ethos och persona används idag inom Facebook som är ett relativt modernt medium. Det är en casestudy med den statliga myndigheten Livrustkammarens Facebooksida som exempel. Detta för att de skapat ett rykte kring sig om att vara roliga och effektiva i sin kommunikation.

Denna uppsats undersöker 10 regnbågsbilderböckers gestaltningar av alternativa reproduktionsprocesser och hur dessa representationer förhåller sig till normativa föreställningar om kön och sexualitet. Familjen är ett konstant närvarande element i barnlitteraturen och många människor drömmer om att en dag få bilda en familj. När det kommer till dess reproduktion finns det en uppsjö barnböcker som på ett pedagogiskt sätt förklarar för barn om hur barn blir till. Dessa böcker visar däremot nästan uteslutande det heterosexuella samlaget som det enda sättet att skapa en familj. Idag ses dock en ökning av de så kallade regnbågsböcker där man väljer att fokusera på andra former av familjebildande som alternativ till det heterosexuella samlagets reproduktion. Men hur mycket skiljer sig egentligen dessa regnbågsbildeböcker från de heteronormativa bilderböckerna? Med den heterosexuella matrisen som främsta verktyg undersöker uppsatsen regnbågsbilderböckerna utifrån tre olika kontexter. Med fokus på författarens tilltal, ikonotexten, verkets pedagogiska tendens, samt verkets paratexter når den ett resultat kring huruvida regnbågsbilderböckerna utmanar den heterosexuella normen eller om de kanske till och med i viss mån stärker den.

This essay examines the novel Totenleuchten (2014) written by a German author under the pseudonym Klara Nordin. The main question in the essay is which functions the nature has in addition to the in popular literature so common function as merely a back drop to the plot. It shows that the nature’s primary function is to distinguish and create a difference and a hierarchy between the identities of the three groups of people that occur: samis, northswedes and southswedes. The nature also has a part in the travelogue elements that occur, that close to reality describe places, restaurants and food from the region of Lappland.

With a focus on gender expectations, this qualitative study analyses how Bellatrix Lestrange and Dolores Umbridge in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series represent evil. Through close reading the first and the final three books of the series using the feminist criticism perspective performativity, the aim of this study is to highlight how the evil women in the series are portrayed in comparison to both good characters of both sexes as well as evil men. The results show that while the evil women represent evil in the ways that they break their gender expectations, the good men also represent goodness in the way that they break their gender expectations. Thus, they are not evil because they deviate from these expectations, but because the gendered traits these women embody are connected to evil and, in turn, help make the reader perceive them as such.
